The Life and Times of the Apostle Paul

Dr. Ball is like a good gossip: telling the Good News!
This little book is clearly an interpretation of events taken from the perspective of the author, a man of faith. It is a read of great value for anyone who yearns to know why Paul is such a significant witness of Christ and of the Gospel. I was delighted to enter into the context and dialogue of those who heard Paul through Dr. Ball's images.

A father's timeless gift
This slender volume is Charles Dickens' written interpertation on the four Gospels. He made the provision that it was not to be published until much later. It is a father's testimony of the truth of the things he held dear. A real treasure.

Wonderful tool to study God's Word!
I have worn out my first copy of "The Living Insights" Bible by Charles Swindoll (Editor). It is printed in the NIV version and which makes the text easy to read. It has Book introductions, articles, that dig deep into the Christian faith and tear down any misconceptions one may have about doctrine. The Living Insights Bible contains character profiles of both well known and not so well known men and women of the Bible and makes them real! It has charts and time lines to help you understand and see more clearly when and where things happened. A few of my favorite things about this Bible is that it contains section summaries and introduces not only the Book but chapters as well. Also, under many of scriptures Mr. Swindoll relates the passage in way it's easily understood in what he calls "Living Insights." The Living Insights Bible is an awesome tool to use to study God's Word to make it more real and personal and really develop and deepen your relationship with the Lord!

Living Toward A Vision
If you, as a Christian, have wondered if the Old Testament held any other value than historicity, this book is for you. Professor Brueggeman expertly leads one back and forth from Old to New Testaments showing a continuing theme that continues to resonate with clarity; that being, "Who is in control." He gives ample scriptural reference to illustrate and authenticate his premise that neither God nor mankind have essentially changed, which leaves one with a sense of promise and hope. He presents, due to his depth of understanding of the subject, many different aspects of "Shalom" that non-jewish people would possibly overlook or be ignorant of. Each time I re-read this material, I am aware of new understandings which deepen my appreciation for the Bible in it's entirety, not just the New Testament or some of the prophets. I feel truly enlightened and indebted to the Professor, especially at this time in our current history which some would have us believe is teetering on the verge of extinction. This is most heartening, prophetic, and helpful. His interjection of personal droll remarks make this easy to read - and enjoy as well.

Gets better with age
John Charles Ryle was a rare man - an evangelical Bishop of the Church of England in England in the last half of the 19th Century. Disrali made him Bishop of Liverpool as a last act of defiance as British Prime Minister.

Ryle was an amazing man whose many books are continually being republished for the next generation. His Expository Thoughts on the Gospels are all the work of a first rate mind - a man who communicates that which he loves so well - Jesus Christ. Of all his writings his passion for Jesus burns most brightly through these Expository Thoughts on the Gospels. Mark's Gospel is no exception. Originally bundled together with Matthew's in Ryle's writings, this recent publication takes the relevent parts for this short Gospel.

Buy his one, then buy the rest.

Solid food for the soul.
J. C. Ryle's Expository Thoughts on the Gospels is solidly Evangelical and Biblical. The expositions are short, and easy to read in a devotional setting. In Ryle's own words,

"In each Exposition I have generally begun by stating as briefly as possible the main scope and purpose of the passage under consideration. I have then selected two, three, or four prominent points in the passage, singled them out from the rest, dwelt exclusively on them, and endeavoured to enforce them plainly and vigorously on the reader's attention." (From the Preface to the Expository Thoughts on Matthew.)

The Expository Thoughts will give you a good grounding in the Gospels. The Banner of Truth edition is a facsimile reprint and the edition I prefer. It has footnotes that are often left out of some of the more "modernized" abridged reprints. Those footnotes can be a gold mine in themselves.

Midrash Criticism
Published in Paperback by University Press of America (28 November, 1997)
Author: Charles L. Quarles
Amazon base price: $30.00
Average review score:

A very good book
Dr. Quarles, a man I respect, has done an excellent job in defending the inerrancy and historicity of the Bible, especially regarding the Gospels and synoptic birth narratives. It may seem too technical at first, but I'm sure you would be pleased once you have read it. As a former student of his, I would recommend this book to anyone, novice and New Testament scholar alike.
