Puss and Boots is a collectors item, beautiful!
Lincoln Kirstein's imaginative retelling of the traditional tale, Puss and Boots, is a magnificent book for both adults and children. Illustrator Alain Vaes, is a set designer for the Bolshoi Ballet, the New York City Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, the Boston Ballet and other companies throughout the world. In Puss and Boots, Vaes used members of the Boston Ballet as his models for many of the delicious characters. Even Puss himself was modeled from a real kitty, who could be considered a balletomine, for 'she' was the beloved pet of a ballerina. The lush elegance of the illustrations and flowing brightness of the words exhibit the grace, fantasy and wonder of the ballet. Lincoln Kirstein's magical additions to the tale, heighten the intrique and present a richer conclusion. This is a book to be read, to be displayed proudly, and above all, treasured, and passed on to your children and grandchildren for their delight and enrichment.

Chock Full 'o Info
This is THE authoritative scientific work on this topic.

An interesting book that goes into extreme detail, perhaps more than could interest the casually acquainted, in this 16-member genus of flowering plants commonly known as 'Goldfish Plants' or 'Guppy Flowers.' Lists many of the named interspecific hybrids and gives an account of the successes of all possible crosses. It has no color photos, but contains photos tables and line drawings; softbound.

Scanning electron micrographs of the seeds of each of the 16 species, in case you're interested

Gives interesting and relevant background in the Brazilian coastal rainforest ecolosystem as well.

This book is written in French.

rimbaud's last years
Having read Fowlie, Miller, Starkie, as well as the more recent British biographies, I still come back to this timeless, intricate, beautifully written (and translated) meditation on Rimbaud. Borer succeeds in linking the adult tradesman and adventurer with the child poet and voyeur. He also does a brilliant job defending Rimbaud from Enid Starkie's mid-20th century libel, proving that the "poet turned slave trader" is not only a myth, but a horrible lie. Most of all, Borer, more than any other biographer, asks the most important questions, the kind of questions meant to remain open, mysterious, unanswered. A must-read for anyone who treasures Arthur Rimbaud (and the mystery that was his last 17 years).

Destructive Market Culture and Suggestions
After reading Roots of Violence in the U.S. Culture, I am moved by Alain's lament for my own people, robbed of their cultural inheritance and set adrift with no home ground for nurturance. As a sociologist and as someone who has lived several years outside my own U.S. culture, who has traveled and worked in other American countries as well as in Europe, Asia and Africa, I can concur with his diagnosis of the serious illness we are suffering here today. As a Frsnciscan Sister, I take heart in his assessment of the effectiveness of the healing power of nonviolence. Within the tangled roots of violence in the U.S. culture, Alain Richard locates and describes the particularly destructive Market Culture. This diseased root has emerged during the last half of the twentieth century, and is fed, to some extent, by other roots described in Richard's valuable diagnosis. While those other roots such as racism, individualism, manifest destiny have been increasingly the subjects of studies that point to illness in U.S. society and the possibility of healing, Market Culture is newer, and more subtle growth. I believe that Alain Richard's critique of this Culture will provoke further discussion, study, and efforts toward overcoming the debilitating effects of this malignancy. Some will argue with the idea that Market Culture has its origins in the U.S. It would be difficult, however, to deny that whatever its origins, it is now somthering authentic homegrown U.S. culture the way Kudzu is smothering U.S. woodlands. More, it is in the process of engulfing cultures across the globe with its rapacious growth. Richard shows how a market culture has actually replaced the traditional values and moral principles of the U.S. culture (it might be more helpful to speak of traditional U.S. cultures). He insists that the resulting loss of a sense of sacredness, together with a loss of mutual and reverent relationship as a basis for social life, is a key factor in the violence we are experiencing today. He speaks passionately of a people deprived of the nurturing environment that their culture once gave to them, submitter to an environment with no room for the mysterious, the Sacred, destroyed by a materialist culture that considers life from the perspective of potential profit or loss. Without the inclusion of "Some Principles of a Nonviolent Culture" at the end of this book, we might be too overwhelmed and dispirited. Instead, we are given some guideposts that resonate with deeply held longings. His "tentative" suggestions will grow more certain for us as we find our way along a healing path to our future. - Mary Litell

The most thorough and accurate guide to Bay area dining.
I am very interested in reading restaurant reviews. We dine out very often, and found Gayot's guide to be very right on target. It was great to find a guidebook that also included wine country dining, as Sonoma County is an important and exciting area for food and wine. The reviewers were not biased towards famous or trendy restaurants. They mention several not yet well known "jewels" for the reader to discover. Much better than Fodor's or Zaggat's.

The Seminar of Jacques Lacan : Book I: Freud's Papers on Technique 1953-1954

Lacan before Lacan
There are still traces of Kojeve in the Lacan's first seminar, and Kojeve mixed with sociobiology (pigeons and the imaginary) and the ego and the id. The imaginary will at this point play a larger role than it will later, as will the ego (formed out of the imaginary and the mirror stage), but at the same time the origin of negativity and aggression, located in an alienating picture of ourselves. But is not negativity ultimately located in language (and even more specifically, in the word "not"), the word "elephant" that is more deadly to the the elephants than any machete? The word as the murder of the thing? It is curious that Lacan and Kojeve once planned to write a book on Freud, and Kojeve and Strauss planned a book on Hobbes and Hegel. The intersection is the state of nature, the humble theoretical origin of Kojeve's desire of another's desire.

A great songbook for children learning French
A wonderfully charming workbook and cassette! I teach French in an elementary school and my kids love these songs (as do I). The book follows no particular curriculum, but presents songs and written activities on many whimsical and pertinent subjects (animals, body parts, counting, etc..). This is the best songbook I have found so far for children learning French.

Important guidenace for all SW engineering professionals
This book is a compendium of the ten knowledge areas (KAs) that cover all of the important elements of software engineering as a discipline. Note that this is a work in progress, and this version was reviewed by hundreds of reviewers from 42 countries before making it into the content set forth in the book.

The knowledge areas are: (1) Software Requirements, (2)Software Design, (3)Software Construction, (4)Software Testing, (5) Maintenance, (6) Software Configuration Management, (7) Software Engineering Management, (8) Software Engineering Process, (9) Software Engineering Tools and Metrics, and (10) Software Quality.

If the KAs in the SWEBOK look similar to the CMM process areas this reflects consensus in the software engineering community regarding key processes and knowledge areas for the profession. There are differences between the SWEBOK and the CMM. Unlike the CMM, which is an assessment-based model that determines an organization's capabilities based on a maturity scale, the SWEBOK is an "informed and reasonable characterization of the software engineering Body of Knowledge and as a baseline document". As such it is a framework for a software engineering organization that maps closely to what is set forth in not only the CMM, but SPICE and Bootstrap, and is an ideal career guide for software engineering professionals. In addition to that function, this guide aligns nearly perfectly to the P-CMM (see People Capability Maturity Model by Bill Curtis , William E. Hefley and Sally A. Miller ISBN: 0201604450). Specific P-CMM process areas that this book supports include: Level 2 Training and Development; Level 3 Competency Development; Career Development and Competency-Based Practices; Level 4 Competency-Based Assets, Organizational Capability Management and Mentoring; and Level 5 Organizational Performance Alignment.

This book should be one of the primary references for any motivated software engineering professional or mature organization.
