Making Humans playable in In-Nomine
The CPG has the daunting task of making mortals viable characters in a system and setting in which things are stacked against them. It does an excellent job at this, elaborating on uniquely human abilities such as sorcery as well introducing options that level the playing field realistically and well. The discusion of human organisations and the role that humanity as a whole plays in the war is also very well done.

The book definetely has more bredth than depth, which leaves some parts of it feeling incomplete. All in all however the book is an effective tool kit and essential for any In-Nomine campaign that wants to have humans as more than just extras.

This is what dreams are made of
Dreams of a Young Girls is a typical work of David Hamilton's. Those who are familar with his particular brand of artistry will feel at home with his adoration of the young female form. Those a bit more on the prudish side will see the man as nothing more than an aging voyeur. Whatever your personal opinion, "Dreams of A Young Girl" is standard Hamilton fair.

A Biography in Duras' Voice
Recommended! Alain Vircondelet's biography of the enigmatic Marguerite Duras will satisfy fans of her literature while leaving them with another mystery to solve: her life. Those seeking a fact-filled chronology of her life will be disappointed. Vircondolet does not write a traditional biography. In a way, this is refreshing; we do not need to yawn over endless dates or read lengthy, dry histories of her family members. Yet, at the same time, we miss this. Anyone who has read Duras wants to know MORE of her. Beginning Vircondelet's biography is exciting at first as the keys to Duras' life and personality seem about to be revealed. Upon reading on, it is discovered that there is little to be revealed here other than what we already know from reading her literature into which, of course, she has wound her life. Duras once told a French magazine that she wanted someone to write about her in the style of her own writing. The astonishing part of this biography is that Vircondolet has succeeded in doing this, sounding very much like Marguerite Duras. His sentences roll like waves as hers do, and the reader is lost in a blend of visions, sensuality, and philosophy. DURAS would be a five-star book if the author had managed to ferret out some unknown facts about this amazing writer. But he played his writing on the safe side, and it is not possible to rank this book higher than a four on the rating scale. But Duras' fans should definitely read the biography as it is a bit like having Duras alive again.

A 2nd A.D.'s two-cents.
I recieved this book as a gift, and got a lot from it. It is dated, and based mostly on West-coast studio work, (2 things I am not), but there was still a great deal of information for me to continue my education in the Assistant Director department. I also found the UPM info a learn expearence, since that is not my speciality. I wish there were more AD books like it out there.

French Philosophy of the Sixties: An Essay on Antihumanism
Published in Paperback by Univ. of Massachusetts Press (May, 1990)
Authors: Luc Ferry, Alain Renaut, and Mary H.S. Cattani
Amazon base price: $18.95
Average review score:

May 68': It doesn't have a beat but you can dance to it...
Ferry and Renaut split this text into three major subjects: an overview of May 1968, four French thinkers who are household names, and an overview of the "subject" of man. The first part is mainly informative, laying the groundwork for a humanistic critique of the postmodern/Marxist left in the second part. People unfamiliar with the politics of the period will find it particularly useful in putting modern French thought in perspective. The second section, a metaphorical crucifixion of Foucault, Derrida, Bourdieu, and Lacan, respectively, is a little more uneven. The best of the group is their critique of Derrida, whose philosophy they refer to playfully as "Heidegger+Derrida's style". The Bourdieu section seems the weakest, as his links to French Marxism seem tangential compared to those of Louis Althusser. The final section of the text is highly illuminating in pointing out the thought of these two gentlemen. While trenchently aware of the critiques of Nietzsche and Heidegger, they by no means see this as a sign to throw up one's hands and give up any chance of pursuing a humanist agenda. They posit a post-Cartesian, nonmetaphysical humanism that will be familiar to anyone who has read of Ferry's other books.

Lacan can be easy...If you read the man yourself!
If you want to read Lacan, forget all the confusing introductions by people like Zizek, Gallup et al. And absolutely don't bother with "Ecrits"--they're dense rewritings of earlier speeches. Instead, begin where it all began...the seminars, Paris, the 1950s. A who's-who of Paris intelligentia are here to listen to the new kid on the block with an intriguing new back-to-basic reading of Freud. Lacan here, in transcriptions from his class, asks only one thing from his students: do your homework. If he's going to talk about a particular essay by Freud, he expects you to read it. You get group presentations by the students, plus Lacan's sardonic asides. Great fun.

Green Hopes: The Future of Political Ecology
Published in Hardcover by Polity Pr (July, 1995)
Authors: Alain Lipietz and Malcolm Slater
Amazon base price: $52.95
Used price: $7.95
Average review score:

why "green" is the end of the "red" revolution
Lipietz makes a cogent and compelling case for the sharedglobal and revolutionary nature of both the "red" (worker's,Marxist, socialist) movements and "green" (ecologist, environmental) movements. He draws clever analogues to demonstrate that "green" thought has reconciled the final "alienation", of man from his natural environment. In fact it is quite clear on examination that all utopian visions, from the Marxist anarchic end-state to the Paradise of Islam to the Garden of Eden that many Christians interpret as the Kingdom of God, share this vision of natural surroundings and a healthy ecology. Green positions range from very rational to very emotional, but all have in common (with the "red" revolutionary predecessors) this commitment to re-integration with nature itself, and most importantly, a commitment to represent those beings that cannot represent themselves.

So, in the green ethic, the representatives are not representing the Green Party, but are rather representing the voiceless and helpless beings - the ecosystems themselves, the higher animals we share our emotional nature with, current children growing up in danger of pathogens and crowding and future generations which may not be able to grow at all. There is a new and natural "proletariat"!

The book's only flaw is failing to demonstrate that these principles are scientific in nature, and that they are not an ideology but a set of naturally-derivable causalities. We have bodies: this is what red and green know that blue does not!
