A New Coat for Anna is a good book because it shows the cycle of making a coat. The book shows how hard it was to get a coat long ago in World War II. I think it is very educational. I bet there are lots of other people who really want to read this book. I liked this book because it was interesting how Anna's mother had to use her special things to help Anna get a coat. She had to trade the things because there wasn't much money because of the war. At the end, Anna celebrated with everybody that helped her make her coat because she was so happy that she had a new coat. I am eight and I love the book.

As the post-war child of a family that suffered through World War II in the Netherlands, I can say that "A New Coat for Anna" has the ring of authenticity. In many ways, it reminds me of first-hand stories I heard from my parents and older siblings about the hardships--and the creativity--of ordinary people during those very difficult years.

This well-written story takes the reader through a year in Anna's life, as her mother arranges to have a new coat made by bartering with her neighbors. She trades jewelry for wool, and then a lamp to have it spun. Anna and her mother pick lingonberries together, which they use to dye the yarn red. The bartering continues as the yarn is woven and then tailored into a coat.

The story concludes with a Christmas celebration, "the best they had in a long time," where Anna invites the farmer, the spinner, the weaver, and the tailor to enjoy a Christmas cake together. Anna also takes time to thank the sheep on Christmas Day.

Even the candles on the tree in Anita Lobel's cozy illustration remind me of the Christmas trees of my childhood. Whenever I share this inspiring tale with children, I wax nostalgic and tell about the candles on our trees.

"A New Coat for Anna" drives home the harsh realities of war and its impact on the daily lives of children... and their neighbors. But it's done in a heartwarming way. Highly recommended.

I read this book in my third grade reading class. The best part was when Anna fed the sheep apples and gave them paper necklaces. It was sad because they didn't have enough money to buy her a new coat.

This was the book I learned to read with. It is still my favorite, even though I am now 18. I buy it for ALL baby gifts. No words can describe how fun this book is. MUST BUY!!! :)

Just as a previous reviewer stated, I am ordering a second copy of this book. I bought it on a whim when my son was 6 mos old. He's a little over two now and still wants this book read EVERY night as part of his routine.

The big pictures and easy words are a great learning tool. It's just enough to stimulate interest but not overstimulate. The length is pretty good too.

Definately worth the money!

Sleepy Dog has eased our child into bedtime every night for over a year.The book contains recognizable subject matter for even the youngest of children. It even brings up a nightmare in a very lighthearted way, so as not to frighten children. This book has prevented our child from ever having a traumatic bedtime experience. Thumbs up!

My 16 month old loves this book. He would have us read it over and over again and never seems to tire of the story. The rhtyhm of the words and the simple and bold illustrations make this book an attention getter. As soon as I come home in the evening my son starts "choo-choo" and "clikkity-clak". He loves it.

Every child I have given this book to loves it-especially the wonderful illustrations by Donald Saaf-all of his books are illustrated beautifully,but this one is really superb.

A terrific blend of art and word capture delightfully the magic of trains, the beauty of Vermont and the joy of reading. Donald and Harriet: GREAT WORK!

We received this book as a gift when my son was born, and I started to read it to him when he was just a few weeks old. Even then this book captivated him because the colors and pictures are so engaging. My son is still little (only 10 months), but it's clear that this is his favorite book -- he pulls it off the shelf to look at the pictures and brings it to us to read. Even after reading and re-reading this book for almost a year, the book is still in great condition (only one broken flap), we haven't tired of the story yet, and I'm sure we'll be reading it for a long time to come!

The rooster is interrupted during his morning crow by someone who says, "moo". Whoever can it be? This delightful book investigates farm animals and their noises in a "lift the flap" format. The edition we have is a board book and is very durable... good thing, too, as my two-year-old son loves this book! Bright, colourful illustrations will attract your child's attention... fun and funky.

This book was the favorite of my now 5-year-old son and is now the favorite of my 14-month-old daughter. With its outrageously colorful pictures, repetitive (predictable for baby) text, and lift-the-flap for the punchline design, it's a brilliant baby and toddler book. While it's not a board book, the pages are tough enough to stand up to endless readings.

My 3 year old daughter received this book at the baby shower for our 2nd child. It is so precious to read with her! It is a great book to remind us Mommies to cherish how our "Children are for Loving"!

This little book is a delight, leaving your little one feeling safe and secure having the loving care of a Mommy. Creating a sense of trust is also implied.

When I originally bought this book I read it to my little grandson and he loved it, especially opening the flaps was a big treat. Now he can repeat what is under each of the flaps, unprompted, and even though he is now 21 months it is still one of his favorite books.

Subsequently, I gave it to my daughter last year for Mother's Day and my son-in-law was given, "Daddies are for Catching Fireflies" on Father's Day. He was just thrilled ~ a book written especially about him.

These books are simple, easy to follow, with large, clear, uncluttered and lovely illustrations with perfect text!

My 2 year old and I read this book several times a day and love it. It's cute and she enjoys lifting the flaps as I read to her-makes her feel more involved. The illustrations are adorable!

This book is great for introducing new siblings, but it is particularly wonderful because of the great pictures.Donald Saaf is a very talented illustrator-I wanted to go out and buy his paintings!

This book was written for us!!My husband & I started reading to our daughter Hannah shortly after her birth. Of course our first children (our dogs) were very jealous of all the attention and we felt bad for them. When we found this touching story, it quickly became our favorite. Thank you, Harriet Ziefert, for reminding us that someday, not to far away, our dogs will love our baby too.

This compact and engaging story is told from the dog's point of view. Full title is "Pushkin Meets the Bundle". Pushkin is the pup; baby is the bundle. A total delight for all dog lovers whether or not their dog is learning to cope with lack of attention due to a 'bundle'.

This book would make a wonderful present from a 2 year old for Father's Day. Children from 2-6 should be very pleased with the book. The images and activities are fairly divided between daughters and sons, so it should be equally enjoyable for all young children. The large, pleasant water colors will be accessible for very young children. One year-olds will enjoy looking at the pictures. The book can also be used as a beginning reader around age 5. Lifting the flaps will seem like peek-a-boo for 2-3 year olds and will bring torrents of giggles.

The book basically recounts lots of things that Daddies can help children with. My favorite was an illustration of a dozing Mom in a chair accompanied by the caption: "Sometimes at the end of the day, Daddy puts you to bed."

The book begins by having a girl try on Daddy's shoes and a boy put on Daddy's belt. Dealing with the relative size issue is a good place to start, and by making it humorous can take some of the potential discomfort out of the size differentials between children and the Daddies.

When the flap is lifted, the child is included more directly with Daddy. For example, one illustration shows a Daddy shaving while a boy looks on. The caption is "A daddy shaves." Under the flap, the boy has put some shaving cream on his own face, as well. The caption under the flap says "And is good to smell."

Daddies tickle your feet, mess your hair, try to fix things (not always successfully), help you deal with deep water (and teach you how to swim), protect you from big dogs, answer questions, go to work, and put you on their shoulders so you can see better.

The book creates the expectation that Daddies will do things with their children, but not that Daddies are perfect. As you can see from the example, care is taken to turn Daddy's size into an advantage for the youngster.

A benefit of having a book like this is to encourage Daddies and children to do more things together. Children are often very attached to their Mommies, and some are more than a little afraid of their Daddies. This book sets up an expectation of doing things with Daddies alone sometimes. That's good. Almost all children's books features Mommies doing things with children, so this book helps balance that mental image out.

After you have been reading this book for awhile, I suggest that you ask your child what things Daddies could do that she or he would like that are not listed in the book. That can help you expand your relationship in mutually rewarding ways.

Keep your eyes open for fireflies!

This is a wonderful book for a father to read to his son or daughter. So many of my daughter's books talked about a mother/child relationship, and I hadn't really found any books about a father/child relationship that I liked until I found this book. It talks about the very special things that a father might do for his child, such as teaching him to swim or fixing a broken toy. For example, one page shows a daddy taking his child to a parade. Then the reader lifts the flap to show that the daddy has given his child "the best seat at the parade" by placing him on his shoulders. My daughter likes this book, and so does my husband.

As a former student of Dr. Harry Landreth, I had the honor of learning economic theory under his expert tutelage. This book helps you appreciate and understand the theories and thinking that helped shape our world. A must for any serious student of economics; this book is hailed by academics as THE book on this subject, and I do not disagree.

An excellent overview of the history of economic thought. I used this text in my course on the history of economic thought. I highly recommend it! The authors cover, in great detail, such critical items as the preclassical areas of thought, mercantillism, Malthus, Marx, Ricardo, and the transition to Neoclassical economics. The discussion of the modern Microeconomic Theory is also a must for any fan of economics.

Hurry Up, Jessie was one of my oldest daughter's favorite books when she was younger. Now it's my 3-year-old's favorite. The book is falling apart because the girls have read it so much. Some of the pages are taped together because my youngest thought it was a lift-the-flap book when she first saw it (it isn't!). This is one book that I never get tired of reading to my girls. The illustrations are very cute. This is a great book that needs to be back in print.

We found the Jessie peep-hole books at the library and our 2-year-old loves them! Jessie's mom is trying to get Jessie to hurry up in each of the books but Jessie always has just one more thing to do. They're headed for the beach this time but Jessie has to find her sneaker. Wonderful softcover book with thicker pages that have these neat peepholes.

I have to admit that the main reason I purchased this book is because my own daughter is named Sara. She is just about ready to start taking the advice in the book and loves to read it. Not technical which is a good thing, just cute and to the point.

We checked out Sarah's Potty from our public library but quickly decided we needed to get one to keep. My two-year-old daughter (not yet potty trained) loves this humorous look at the animals using the potty. She knows it by heart and will laughingly shout, "Nooooo!" when asked, "Does a Zebra sit on the potty?". I have ordered the little boy version, "Max's Potty" for my nephew.

I like this book because it communicates all the important concepts related to potty training without taking itself too seriously. It is also a lift-the-flap book, and these books seem to hold toddlers' attentions a bit more than others. I also like the way that at one point it depicts Sarah playing with the potty which is differentiated from Sarah finally using the potty. It's nice for a book to make that distinction because often the first stage is for a child to play with a potty not fully understanding the concept. I also like the way that it teaches that we should wash our hands after using the potty (one of the few books to do so). Overall, a great way to introduce the idea of a potty--bright simple illustrations, just enough information, and a little humor thrown in too!
