Excellent Author-Top Notch Book
Zeifert proves once again that she is the premiere author for the first grade set. The words and sentences have a later first grade readability. The story is the original one that we have been accustomed to, even to the point of the wolf eating Little Red herself. She comes out OK in the end. I read it to my daughter and she loved it. As a licensed literacy specialist, I review books for this age group and highly recommend it.

A Good Bed Time Book
This lift the flap book is a good one for falling asleep for kids from about age 1 to 3. We started reading this book to my little brother about six months ago and it helps him get to sleep. It's a book about a kitten named Nicky and there are too many sounds around her. She asks her mother to make them keep quiet. And you lift the flaps to find out what is making the sounds. Finally it all quiets down and Nicky gets to sleep.

Let's Count with Nicky!
What a great way to introduce your toddler to counting! Nicky is a most curious kitten and in this book makes his way around the barnyard talking with the animals about their babies. It's odd however that Ziefert takes us on a counting adventure from one to six (and not one to five or ten). The illustrations are fun and brightly colored. Nicky is a must for my son before bedtime.

Macabre....but my kids love it
My twin boys have adored this book since we picked it up by accident at the local library when they were two years old. Now they've just turned three and we have rented it from the library so many times that we've finally decided to buy our own copy! There's just something about the story and text (and illustrations) that they adore. It's somewhat macabre ("Humpty's insides will soon be out" and a few pictures of Humpty lying on the stretcher) but I think this is what makes it all the more fascinating to them. They can recite the rhymes almost word for word and every time we read it together they find something new in the illustrations. I would highly recommend this book but would disagree with the recommended age group - I think kids as young as two would also like it, especially if they are familiar with the traditional Humpty Dumpty rhyme (or have slightly twisted senses of humour as my boys obviously do).

Read to Your Child to Improve Bonding and Intellect!
Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.

To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. Play With Little Bunny was one of her picks.

This book has five scenes with Little Bunny in them. In the first, she is going to build a tower with blocks. In the second, Little Bunny is painting a picture. In the third, she plays dress-up. She also makes music in another scene. She reads a book before she goes to bed in the final one.

Your child is encouraged to help Little Bunny by helping her find her blocks and building with them. Your child also helps Little Bunny get some colors for her painting. When Little Bunny plays dress-up, your child can add her hat and shoes. Your child also helps her get her drum and bells. And your child sings to Little Bunny. Your child also helps Little Bunny find a story and relates one to her.

The stickers are wonderful because they are of see-through plastic, and they stick really well. It is pretty easy for your child to peel them from one spot and move them to another one.

As you can see, this book basically puts your young child in the position of playing the role of older sibling or parent for Little Bunny. Because the stickers can be put anywhere, your child will have endless possibilities of how to use them. My daughter would decide that she wanted to put them all on one page. After she did, she would laugh and laugh.

Through playing a nurturing role, your child can begin to unravel the mysteries of how adults and older siblings think about younger people and animals.

Overcome your stalled thinking about what your child is capable of in terms of coordination, thoughtfulness, and imagination. You'll be glad you did, and your child will love you all the more for it. You'll have a ball helping your child with this book. Learning to read can be a ball with than this book!

Poor Pushkin!
Pushkin's idyllic dog life is shattered with the arrival of "the bundle" in "Pushkin Minds the Bundle". In this second book about Pushkin and family by Ziefert, Pierre, the baby, once again is the center of attention. Pushkin is relagated to the role of a neglected older sibling and worse, forced to mind "the bundle". A good book for sibling rivalry, ending with Pushkin strumming on a banjo, singing by the camfire and pointing out "Pierre's too small to sing, so I'm the star of the show." The pictures are my favorites with cardigan wearing Pusking and dotted blueberry landscapes.

SO SICK
So sick is a wonderful book.It lets children know the consecuences of eating too much of something (cookies in this case). It focuses on the actual mechanism of what children should do in order to get better, which will basically be resting and taking their medicine. This book includes very simple and easy to read words, as well as great illustrations. My five year old loved it so much, he didn't want to put it away until he went to bed. If you have a cookie monster at home, this is the perfect book to buy.
