Young Reader's Picturebook of Tar Heel Authors

useful for those curious...
This Young Reader's PictureBook of Tar Heel Authors has a somewhat misleading title. There is a small (about 2 inches by 2 inches) photo on each page. Each author profile takes up one page, and those photos are the only "pictures" in this book! Parents expecting a picturebook a la Dr. Seuss are going to be disappointed.

The text of each profile is doubtless accurate, having been compiled by the expert Richard Walser. The book is dated though, having been published in 1966. No authors with North Carolina roots who have made their mark primarily since then are included (Gloria Houston, Patricia Cornwell, Rick Boyer, Elizabeth Daniels Squire, Charles Frazier to name a few).

This book looks like it would excite very few young readers, but, to paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, folks who go in for this sort of thing will go in for this.

A decorating book with no photos!?????
I was a complete idiot for not reading the book's description more carefully before I bought it. Talking about decorating is OK, but you have to SHOW me something beautiful too. This is only HALF a decorating book, becauase it has no photos.

Title is misleading, this book does not make decorating fun!
There is a lot of information in this book, but it does not go into depth about a lot of subjects. (Too many to mention here) I am not a novice, and a lot of information was either left out or not given. It is OK for just the basics, but the book to me is boring, especially with few photos (in the middle of the book) If I were going for the basics, I'd want a book that told me how many square feet a gallon of paint covered, or a roll of wallcovering covered. How about measuring for blinds, or draperies? If you would like a true how-to book try "Fabrique Technique" on fabric corrdination or "Use What You Have Decorating" on furniture placement. They're both informative and useful information that you can really use.

Lifesaver
I have zero talent in the decorting department. This book was great it showed me many different ways I could get the look I was looking for. If you are all thumbs when it comes to decorating and don't know where to start, yet you know you want a fresh new look this is the book for you.

A very interesting suspense book.
I enjoyed reading the book My Gal Sunday By Mary Higgins Clark. Since I have been reading her books I have come to figure that this is one of the most changable books that she has wrote. The middle of the book was probably my favorit. Because he struggled so hard to figure out where Sunday was. He went to great lengths to get here back. I think in this book you can say that Henry loves Sunday because he is always by her side and he is always finding a way to help her. No matter what drastic measures he has to go through.

I Liked This Book!
My Gal Sunday is not this author's best book but I think it's still pretty good, the short stories were enjoyable and I liked the characters Henry Parker Britland IV who is a former US President and his wife, Sandra O'Brien Britland, better known as Sunday. I like Sunday, I know a name like Sunday makes her sound like a ditz but she is far from it and is actually very smart and she is also strong and brave and I like that Mary Higgins Clark wrote her like that and didn't make her a wimpy little airhead. I liked this book and recommend it to fans of Mary Higgins Clark!

Great book. Keeps me looking for much, much more.
I loved the book. To have a retired president and a congresswoman marry was pure brilliance. I loved it when Sunday (Sandra) was always getting her nose into trouble and the Secret Service come to the rescue with her husband leading the way. If al writers could write as well as Mary Higgins Clark, the world would be a much better place.

Desperate? Need a scene? Get something else...
"Relevant" is the wrong word to describe this book. I would describe it more as "stereotypical" if I were creating the title. The scenes are all about the self-centered, hormone-driven, culture-obsessed teen that exists only in extreme conditions. If you really need a scene and want to show your audience what "today's shallow teen" would be like, use this book. I suggest you find something with more depth and meaning. This might as well be titled "Deranged Perspectives: Stereotypical Scenes for the Stereotypical Teen" by Mary "I should have majored in something else" Krell-Oishi. Sorry, Mary. I wish I kept the receipt.

Not A realy Good BOOK
This book is not very good, because it doenst have alot of things in it. If you are looking for a book to do plays and such, this will not be a good one. This book does not disscuss day to day issues, and i would not recommend it.

Cool
The book Summer Switch was just about the worst book I've ever read.

The Sequel to Freaky Friday
Although it is not as good as Freaky Friday, I enjoyed Summer Switch. The plot is basically the same - parent and child switch bodies, but the narration is different. Instead of just one person telling the story, Summer Switch swaps back and forth between the two. Please do not think this a carbon copy of Freaky Friday. It is realy a funny book in its own right.

Well, if high school is nonsensical rambles
I had the unfortunate privilege of reading many of the skits in here, finding them very senseless. Not only do these scenes never happen, but by the end of each short we feel just as we did when it began. Nothing has been accomplished and there never has been that much of a conflict to begin with. The language is too mild, high schoolers do not talk like that. Words and phrases like "Oh my God" are overused, trust me, high schoolers do have a wider vocabulary than that. I have not read the sequel to this book and do not wish to unless for a good laugh, which is all the first book is good for.

Most of these scenes DON'T happen
Krell-Oishi's book attempts to fill a much needed void in the world of high-school scene study: the need for brief, interesting scenes which teenagers can relate to and are interested in. Unfortunately, almost all of these scenes completely lack active dramatic conflict. Characters generally talk about problems they are having with offstage unseen characters; those on stage are almost all in agreement. As the subtitle states, these are mere "snapshots" of adolescent life. Accurate, but like the average snapshot, not very interesting. Yes, the writer has a good ear for teen dialogue, but she seems to lack a true affection for young people. The characters tend to be drawn as nothing more than charicatures with simplistic motives. High school kids are complex, and I've yet to meet one who was only shallow, or bitchy, or self-absorbed, as most of Krell-Oishi's characters are. As a drama teacher, I'd recommend others to look elsewhere for good scenes for teens.

Parent/Child and Preschool Aquatic Program Manual (Ymca Swim Lessons)

Not a how-to manual
This manual is a textbook for aquatic instructors. It assumes they have participated in the YMCA aquatic training and certification program and will use this manual to tailor classes to meet their student's needs. Part I is an overview of the Parent/Child and Preschool Aquatic Program. Part II is devoted to the Parent/Child Program and discusses parent involvement, how to work with the children, skill development and lesson planning. Part III is devoted to the Preschool Program and discusses lesson planing, how to teach character development and specific skill development for the Pike and Eel levels and Ray and Starfish levels. The Appendix lists aquatic program guidelines for children under the age of three and gives activities, games and songs that will make the learning fun.

I bought the Parent/Child and Preschool Manual because I knew that the YMCA had a successful Aquatic Program and I wanted to use their method to teach my son to swim at home. I was expecting a how-to manual or at least an outline of exercises that would teach swimming fundamentals but I found neither. For this reason I rate this book 1 star. Its target audience would more than likely rate it more favorably.
