Escape from Castro

A Fast Paced Thriller with Exceptional Historical Accuracy
Mario Lamar is not only a gifted story-teller, he shines a spotlight upon the Cuban peoples suffering under Castro for the world to see. Escape from Castro is a gripping, fast paced novel told by an Officer and gentleman who lived through it all. A poignant work of passion, this book is a must read.

Great Book! Too realistic to be just fiction!
The book is purportedly fiction, however, judging from the insight and history of the author you realize as you read that this account must be based on facts.

It is an extremely engaging novel that captures what life must have been like in the first years of Castro's dictatorship.

It is important that those of us outside the exiled Cuban community learn of the atrocities that have been and still are committed by Castro and his lackeys just miles from our shores.

The characters are well defined and the book's organization is flawless. The day it came I couldn't put it down and finished it in one sitting.

Escape from Castro is a novel that will stay with me long after Castro is gone!

George Herbert the Temple: A Diplomatic Edition of the Bodleian Manuscript (Medieval & Renaissance Texts & Studies, Vol 54)
Published in Hardcover by Medieval & Renaissance Texts & Studies (1995)
Authors: George Herbert and Mario Di Cesare
Amazon base price: $18.00
Average review score:

Perhaps authoritative
Di Cesare makes a relatively persuasive argument that this Bodleian manuscript is more authoritative than a widely accepted first printed edition of 1635. The manuscript is not Herbert's, so it is a live argument as to which represents his most specific intentions. I don't know which is closer to what Herbert had in mind, but the extraordinarily painstaking reproduction of such elements as the relative size of letters is appreciated.

This is the editor's description; ignore 5-star rating.
Mario A. Di Cesare writes: The Bodleian manuscript of George Herbert's wonderful set of poems called The Temple is a beautiful work made with loving care at Little Gidding in the months after Herbert's death in 1633. It is also the most important manuscript of Herbert's poetry.

This volume presents an exact transcription of the manuscript, page by page, rendering precisely or recording not just the spelling and punctuation (including the placement of punctuation), but also the visual layout, the special characters (size, position, emphasis), the corrections and insertions, and the graphic characteristics of the page: Computer typography allowed me to imitate the original pages closely. (Lots of facsimile pages are also included.) My three-part introduction shows why contact with original manuscripts is important, argue the primacy of this manuscript for Herbert's text, and give critical readings of the poems themselves.

I am happy to report that my book has been widely praised by reviewers and called indispensable for anyone seriously interested in Herbert's poetry.

THIS BOOK EXEMPLIFIES TRUE TRIUMPH, COURGAGE & SURVIVAL
The Glass Window, is a book of courage and triumph. The author, Mario Morales since childhood began to experience something dreadful and it began the process of stripping his soul. The pain that stayed within him and the denial caused him to go against the punches that Life tends to throw at us. I admire and respect the author because although those experiences he went through, after a Spiritual Awakening experience, he decided to re-evaluate his life and become aware of the worthiness each individual has if you just search within yourself and take the initiative to change your life around. The experiences clouded his life for several years, but than the Sunshine entered when GOD touched his soul and enlightened his precious life. I feel fortunate to have met Mr. Morales because he exemplifies the true meaning of survival, and it begins when you become aware of the significance of yourself worth and your purpose in life and when you begin to feel Blessed to be ALIVE. Changing a negative experience one to a positive one. Keep up the good work of spreading your words of wisdom, if you change one person's life than you have created a legacy and all the pain your suffered was not in vain. I know you have and will continue to make a difference Mario. GOD BLESS YOU!

Must read for teens and their parents
The Glass Window by Mario Morales

Thought provoking material. This book is a gift to all parents with teens. This book will allow teens and parents to discuss issues in their lives by drawing from the experiences described by the author. The "Glass Window" is eloquently written at a level that either a teen or a scholar could comprehend, appreciate, and gain insight. My life did not have the downfalls that the author experienced but I was still intrigued and motivated by this book. This book allows me to believe that people can change and get their life back together. Being Mexican-American I found some connection in some of the racial issues discussed in the book. Racial tensions that I felt as I was completing my bachelor's degree. Trying to find the fine line between family and society. The fine line between who I was and what I wanted to become. Trying to figure out who you are and why you became who you became. I feel this book is a must read for all parents and all young teens from all walks of life. This book is about how fears and traumas in our lives become life-changing events if they are not dealt with early. This book describes the importance of self-expression in a positive manner. Most importantly, this book deals with all the issues that people deal with in society; drugs, racial tension, survival, importance of religion, process of institutionalization, sexual predators, and the importance of expression. I highly recommend this book and give applause to the author.

Great for kids and adults
I read this book while in it's manuscript form (I'm the author's daughter). I found the brilliance of this story is how many times I met people in my life who were mirror images of the characters in this marvelous book. It's a delightful story for adults and children (I'd say 6 years or older). Of course I'm a little biased -- the beautiful dedication in this book is to my son. END

A Marvelous Allegory on Difficulties in Leadership
This is the best allegory on leadership I've ever encountered. Cappelli captures the soaring, noble aspects of leadership, and the seemingly humiliating, crash-landings leaders often make in realistic, but eloquent terms. He illuminates the challenges that leaders face from within and without, and the help they need to overcome them.

If you are hurting because of the trials and tribulations of leadership and/or are doubting your abilities as a leader (or you know someone who is), you truly must read this book. A former U. S. Air Force officer, Cappelli displays incredible sensitivity to the human needs, strengths and frailties of leaders, and, relying upon his flying experience, crafts a truly marvelous little volume. I promise you will never forget it. I've acquired several copies and share them with colleagues who invariably offer sincere thanks for the opportunity to read "the Great Drake," and many go seeking copies of their own.

Translates well too
Prior to reading this I had thought of Vargas Llosa as a writer more clever than profound. However this book reveals a author at the peak of his powers. It digs deep into challenging and provocative ideas, using a narrative technique that adds depth to and complements the plot. Right up to the last few pages it keeps forcing you to question and reevaluate what you believe within and about the story. One of my favorite books and, in my opinion, easily his best.

Good plot
The book is a challenging one and at the beggining one might get lost in its complexity. It is at the end that one realizes the message that Vargas LLosa is conveying. I read the original version in spanish.

Would like to see a personal approach to the writer
This book is amazing at analysing Leopoldo Zea's work. But when the author speaks about the man, he conceals several facts that are interesting enough to make a movie!, like he had six children with his first wife, then married again with an evil Argentinian who had been accused of poisoning to death her first husband, and word went by she later tried to do the same with Leopoldo's sons and grandsons, because she never had any children with the thinker. This kind of gossip would make a warmer reading!.

This book resumes the work of Dr. Leopoldo Zea
This book is a guideline to Leopoldo Zea's massive work, through his ideas. This Zea thinker is the best latin american ideologist of the XX century, and one of the most renowned Non-fiction writers of the Latin continent. His most important work, to my taste, is Positivism in Mexico. I believe most of his work is a must for students on Latin American courses or careers.

The simpliest and sublimest book of the century!!!
For those of us who love poetry - and for those who don't, this is a simple poetry, and as usual, all the simple is beutifull!!!. Poetry about love, social reality, about our century, about us. Adriana Velásque

intenso

Such a good book
I think I read this book some five years ago and I still keep on buying it for my friends. A truly masterpiece that will stay with the readers for the remaining of their lives.

Apocaliptic saga of a fallen mesiah and his followers.
Though I admit to being partial to Mario Vargas Llosa, this particular book stands out as one of the best contemporary novels. The story is compelling and extremely well told. The plot is complex and entraitaining. The narrative is rich and flows easily. You will not find much or the author's characteristic humor in this tragic story. The ironic cruel nature of human behaviour and human institutions is present in each page. I hate it when author's of the stature of Vargas Llosa are said to be mainly interesting because they describe cultures that are foreign to us (mainly their own). This is not a book about Peru nor critisism of South American dictatiorships. This is a book about God and religion, about love and betrayal and about intollerance and human stupidity. If anyone thinks that the events and characters portrayed in the novel are "foreign" to us, maybe he should think twice and remember Wacco or Ruby Ride. This monumental work is not for the faint of heart. It is brutal in its depiction of pain and misery. It is a tragedy, and a sad one at that! I highly recommend this book, it is one of my all time favorites.
