Giotto (Monograph Series)

Authors: Mario Bucci and Giotto

A Feast for the Eyes in Bite-Size Chunks
The work of Giotto is fascinating, bridging as it does the medieval and early Italian Renaissance styles. This splendid collection offers clear, vivid, rich photographs of Giotto's work in a chronological parallel of the artist's life. Background on both Giotto and the world in which he lived is provided in concise, easily-swallowed paragraphs that never detract from the splendid visuals.

Much of Giotto's work is in dire need of restoration, yet these photos manage to capture the essence of his art without dwelling too heavily on the damage the centuries have done. Some of the larger images are accompanied by instructive enlargements, and one is helpfully outlined to illustrate the fresco techniques he used. In addition to the artwork itself, the book contains photos of Tuscany landmarks, documents, coins, and other paraphernalia of the age.

Some may be put off by the book's small dimensions, but this only makes it more portable, and highly suitable to take to the doctor's office or anywhere else you may have time to kill. I particularly enjoyed the chronological presentation, which allowed me to browse through and get a sense of Giotto's evolution as an artist, and see how his worked changed from the somewhat rigid style of symbolic Byzantine icons to the more human, realistic style of the Italian Renaissance.

Whether or not you are familiar with Giotto, if you love art you'll enjoy this book. And it's definitely worth the price!

Excellent.
This brings to a new light the last 2000 years of history and how the masses have been manipulated by religion, with alternative motives. This provides a great case that Jesus's message has been miscommunicated since his death. During my life I have always questioned much of what I had learnt and read about Jesus and Religion. This pulls together some of my thoughts as well as, offers some good explaination for other ideas and inconsistancy. It just makes a lot of sense.

Gonzalez De Leon: Architecture As Art

poetry in concrete
Teodoro Gonzalez de Leon is one of Mexico's great architects, and his distinctive buildings grace many cities throughout the world. His designs have a stark simplicity, with natural surfaces. His favorite material is concrete, and its weight contrasts with the brightness of his interior spaces. A disciple of Le Corbusier, like his teacher, he believes that "Interiors exist only when they are flooded with light".

Born in 1926, his paintings and architectural pieces have had numerous exhibits, and he has won many prestigious awards.
Published in 1998, this large soft cover book has a preface by Gonzalez de Leon, a long introduction by Mario A. Arnaboldi, and a detailed explanation that accompanies the many color photos, floor plans, and cross sections of the works.

There are 16 buildings shown, with photos from many angles. Four of these have not been constructed, and are shown in model form. Two of my favorites are in Mexico City; the Fondo de Cultura Economica, with a bridge that spans and floats between the structures and extends beyond them, and the vast Arcos Bosques Corporativo, which is featured on the cover, and has the eerie suspension in the upper floors.

The Great Shadow - A Fiction Lived, a Life Ficcioned
The Great Shadow is one of the novels of the only Sa-Carneiro's book dedication to Fiction. But is is central in the identification of the key-structure that allows that his works talk about his life, and vice-versa. No one, has constructed as Sá-Carneiro did, a romantical project that would make his life the total fulfillment of his poetical project. And The Great Shadow brings us the fantasmagorical story of a man pursuited by his shadow, appealing, stressing and killing his own reflection of himself; his shadow is himself, because the Other is the only condition he has to live and see himself. This obsession with the Other will lead him to death by suicide. As in the book: in a profound despair, the protagonist kills himself and his shadow, as a way to finish his life of agony and self-division. A book that situates us in the drama of the Portuguese First Modernism, by the hand of our most desgraceful and auto-biographical poet.

Phenomenal creativity
Wow! From the initial picture depicted on the cover, you know that you are seeing something unique. The author transports you to a landscape of figures, actions and emotions which recreate different aspects of the game of soccer--all using his hands! As you slowly turn the pages you are drawn into the magic that his hands perform. A trully outstanding creation, and a real treat for those who love the game of soccer.

This is the seminal book on the history of Havana.
This book is a rich resource on a wide range of issues associated with the nearly 500 years of growth and transformation of Havana. It is a seminal work that belongs on any Cubanologist's bookshelf, and an essential text for anyone reading to prepare for a trip to the island. It is also an important work for those with only a passing interest in the specifics of Havana's built environment, but who are interested in urban history, architectural forms, state socialism, or Cuba's post-Soviet transition.

History of the Pentecostal Revival in Chile

God's Unchanging Hand
The entire time I was reading this book I could sense the presence of the Holy Spirit. It was like a journey in time to a place nearly one hundred years old, but very much alive today. In "part 2" of the book, the author, Mario Hoover, shares wonderful childhood memories and stories of life while living with his loving grandpa, Dr. Willis Collins Hoover. This glimpse into Dr. Hoover's family life, along with his personal writings are carefully woven into the first part of the book. This personal touch provides the reader with an insiders perspective of this great man of God, as well as the Pentecostal revival that was sovereignly bestowed upon him, his church, and the nation he so dearly loved.

I was reminded that our endeavors are always tested by time, and time has been gracious to Dr. Willis Collins Hoover, his family, and the Spirit led movement of 1909. His legacy is one of genuine leadership, humility, steadfastness, and an unwavering respect for The Lord and his work. It is amazing how the 1909 revival in Chile reflects the Azusa Street, and Welsh revivals of the early 20th century. Interestingly, they are the mirror image of today's Pentecostal outpourings that are taking place in cities like Brownsville Florida, and Toronto Canada. The names, dates, and locations are all different, but the Holy Spirit continues to function in the same manner as he has since the days of Pentecost some 2000 years ago, truly amazing, profoundly insightful.

"The History of the Pentecostal Revival in Chile" has encouraged and deepened my personal commitment to the Lord. It has renewed the realization in me that the Holy Spirit of yesterday is still on the move today. His desire to soak mankind in His Spirit continues throughout history, and his methods and mode of operation remains the same: foolish and bizarre to some, while exciting and sweet to others.

History continues to prove that revivals are messy, and the 1909 Chilean revival was no different. Outwardly, it would appear there's a price to be paid for involving ones self in such matters. But to those involved in the Chilean revival it was no sacrifice at all. Instead, the revival became a movement to facilitate the empowering of the Holy Spirit to hungary individuals whose ardent desire was to simply reach the lost. Their obedience in this matter was far more important than the discomforts associated with persecution, and the seeds sown in those days continue to grow and flourish today.

This book is a book of history, fashioned in the form of an amazing story. It's style and content is interesting for the casual reader as well as the scholar. A must read for those interested in the history of 20th century Pentecostal revivals. It serves as a reminder that God is interested in all people, of all nationalities, and his precious Holy Spirit moves among them in the same form and fashion, both yesterday and today.

Throughout time, civilizations rise and fall, while cultures ebb and flood, but the Holy Spirit remains constant and true, which is the very nature of God and his unchanging hand. The physical hardships Pastor Hoover and his family faced in order to fulfill the call to the people of Chile, along with the dedication to never insult, or capitalize on the move of the Holy Spirit was truly inspiring.
