A Beautiful Book!
I just returned from the first day of the NCTE conference in NYC where I attended a session on using picture books in the secondary classroom in conjunction with American classics. Judith Byron Schachner was in attendance and read her wonderful book in a mellifluous Irish brogue. This book is not just for young children. It is a terrific way to introduce high school students to Emerson and Transcendentalism.

Erotica for the senses
This treasure trove of classic erotic verse is for those who like their erotica subtle and engrossing. you will not find crude pornoographic passeges here, rather timeless literature which fire the imagination and make the soul desire. The works presented here are rather daring and provocative especially when one takes into account the time they were written. Poetic words come together to give the listener quite the stimulating image and you soon find yourself catching your breath wondering how one got away with writing such a graphic piece. One has to ponder if people of years past were more liberated then we give them credit for.
There is a wide variety of works presented here. Some are mere romantic notions with a touch of passion, others quite graphic and revealing. there are passages on love, sex, infidelity same sex attraction and even on masturbation. I would caution though that one truly has to be a lover of the English word to fully appreciate such a collection of erotic verse. No doubt listneing to such pros and poetry is the best way to enjoy works such as these. It was something else to listen too and very enticing. I found myself even wondering what the readers might look like in the nude for some of them had the sexiest voice. After listening to a few pieces you will find yourself drifting, and undressing strangers around you. It has this effect. it manages to withhold the mystery of sexual pleasure yet allows you to go wild with your imagination. Once you are done listening to this audiobook you will approach a new erotic encounter with a different notion.
This audiobook contains two CD's. A variety of readers both male and female narrate the passages. There are musical interludes throughout the readings adding that much more to the audio production. A must for lovers of poetry, erotica and for those who enjoy audiobooks with a flair. Naxos has done it again.

A superb collection of Native American wisdom sayings.
Native American Truths is a collection of wisdom sayings and observations to help lay a general background of the Old Religion. There are parallels and similarities between the Native American religious outlook and other documented religions, with experiences of teaching a special deeper philosophy to a gifted or promising inner circle. That is in part the Good Medicine Philosophy, introduced and partially explained in Native American Truths. Many teachings are outlines relating to the religion of nature, and the spiritual relationship between Man and the Great Spirit, as well as the Circle, Tree of Life, the Wheel of Life, the Medicine Wheel, and Man and His Brothers. Famous native Americans quoted include Hyemeyohsts (Storm), Sioux, Chief Luther Standing Bear, Lakota Siouxl, Rolling Thunder, Cherokee, Sun Bear, Ojibway Medicine Man, Chief Seattle, Black Elk, Oglala Sioux, and Popol Vuh. Simple drawings and diagrams illustrate and help explain concepts that may seem confusing or esoteric. Native American Truths is a good guide book to convey truths and ideas discovered long ago to improve awareness and seek enriched spirituality as well as conquer weaknesses and acquire discipline. It is an excellent sampler of a variety of Native American religious thoughts. "Any idea, person or object can be a Medicine Wheel, a Mirror, for a man. The tiniest flower can be such a Mirror, as can a wolf, a story, a touch, a religion or a mountain top. For example, one person alone on a mountain top at night might feel fear. Another might feel calm and peaceful. Still another might feel nothing at all. In each case the mountain top would be the same, but it would be perceived differently, as it reflected the feelings of the different people who experienced it." Hyemeyohsts (Storm), Sioux, p. 41.

Excellent history of World's most revered sport competition
This book is one of the best sports reference books ever written. Byron Butler has assembled a season-by-season analysis of the Football Association Challenge Cup, dating right from the start(1871). Every final(and replay) gets covered with team-listings, attendance figures, photographs, and statistics. There are also lots of photogarphs and advertisements from down the years, lots of interesting related material(info on star playes, the men who founded the competition, the giant killers etc. etc.) This, added to the fact that Mr Butler is obviously a devout fan, passionate about the game, make this a must buy for any fan of football("soccer" to Americams).

A great personal account!
Thank goodness someone has had the good sense to reprint this classic book about steamboating on the upper Mississippi! George Merrick relates his personal experiences as a steamboat pilot during the heyday of steamboating with stories about the boats, towns, and people of the stretch of river between St. Louis and St. Paul. I grew up in that area, and found his recollections fascinating. I learned a lot about the history of the towns along the river, and about the rich tradition of steamboating. Imagine piloting a 500 ton boat down a winding, wild river in the dead of night with no headlight, moonlight, or navigation aids!! Captain Merrick tells how he did it! A must for anyone who is interested in steamboating or the history of industrial expansion to the West.

An erudite and seminal body of work
Deftly translated for an English readership by Byron R. McCane (Associate Professor of Religion and Chair of the Department of Religion at Converse College, Spartanburg, South Carolina), The Place Of The Gospels In The General History Of Literature the distinguished biblical scholar Karl Ludwig Schmidt (1891-1956) presents a scholarly and articulate argument that the gospels of the New Testament represent a literary genre which does not derive from others in Mediterranean or Middle Eastern antiquity. Schmidt's contention was that the gospels are the written record of an oral tradition rather than a biographical or historical text. An erudite and seminal body of work, this edition of The Place Of The Gospels In The General History Of Literature is further enhanced with an informed and informative introduction by John Rices (Professor of Divinity and Biblical Criticism, University of Glasgow) and is an invaluable and much appreciated contribution to New Testament Studies.

Poetry Of The Romantics
I thoroughly enjoyed this tape. Beautiful poetry read by beautiful voices. It's wonderful for playing in the car on long journeys, it could even be the perfect antidote to road rage. Very relaxing.

This biography/anthology is an excellent introduction to the late poet (1917-1958), based on articles, interviews, and previously unpublished journals and letters of Reece himself. The book includes historical photographs of Reece and is scholarly in its research but highly readable in its writing style.
Also included is a large collection of Reece's poetry, drawn from the four volumes of poetry he published in his lifetime. Reece was a master of the poetic ballad, and most of his poems reflect the deep spirituality and the stark realism of the North Georgia mountain people. Highly influenced by the graceful language and rhythms of the King James Bible, Reece breathed new life into traditional poetic forms. This book is highly recommended if you want a rich understanding of this complex, spiritual poet and the mountains and culture he loved.
