The Secret Chief: Conversations with a Pioneer of the Underground Psychedelic Therapy Movement

Delve into new ground within the realm of pscyhology
As a Master's candidate studying psychology, I am thrilled to have stumbled upon this book! Finally, some of the "darker" areas of the field have been illuminated by a first-hand expert.
Written in a conversational tone, this book is safely navigated by the jargon-wary among us, and is entertaining as well as educational. Pick this one up if you have an interest in the fringe movements in psychology, have an open-minded approach to what is considered therapeutic, and/or simply are intrigued by the spiritually enhancing capabilities of psychedelic drugs.

Mind expanding and soul healing
Let me try this again. The Secret Chief is a fantastically written, conversational and often warm and humorous overview of a real pioneer in the field of psychology. Few researchers or clinicians are willing to boldly sidestep well-known but mostly unfounded restrictions on their practice.
The hero of this story is a man that truly put his clients/patients first and upheld their well being as the foremost goal. From his uncanny ability to listen to what they were saying to his courage and wisdom in guiding them along the path toward recovery and growth, the reader is brought in to delightfully pick up on the knowledge gained.
Operating not just from a medical expert perspective but from a caring human being equally engaged in the challenge of life, the therapist intuitively, assertively spurs the client onto self discovery and mind expansion. Tools of the psychological trade vary. The respective benefits of varying methods of therapy are discussed, and the trail blazing of supposed "radical" "innovative" methods occurs. That they have ever been explored is impressive. That there is a definite need to continue research and practice in this field is made resoundingly evident within the pages of this remarkable, insightful book.

Highly recommended.

Brian Wallace, author, Labyrinth of Chaos

Makes a trilogy with 'Acid Dreams' and 'Storming Heaven'
This book reveals some of the true promise of psychedelic therapy that is obscured in other popular histories of the era that focus on the (albeit fascinating) aftermath of Dr. Leary et. al. ('Acid Dreams' and 'Storming Heaven').

The most valuable aspect of the book, and its main focus, is an oral walkthrough of a session with the therapist Jacob. Mr. Stolaroff has done a valuable service in preserving Jacob's insights into what works and what doesnt work.

Though, I was confused when Jacob described his purely religious orientation to the therapy yet didnt elaborate hardly at all on his own 'theological' outlook or experiences.

Also, in my opinion, Jacob goes to an extreme in asserting at one point that transformation *requires* such entheogens. He seems to unfairly discount the traditional religious retreat practices and experiences.

Personally, I side with the theory that such entheogens merely unveil latent faculties that can be cultivated by traditional retreat type practices without the need for entheogens at all.

Also, one danger, perhaps, in the outlook and process described in this book, is its almost complete lack of orientation to 'Right View' (in the Buddhist sense) as the precursor to 'awakening'. The Buddha stressed that insight into Right View was a key prerequisite. Yet, this therapy seems to presume it is largely irrelevant.

I would recommend Thaddeus Golas' 'The Lazy Man's Guide to Enlightenment' as a complement to this book, as Golas himself broke through via entheogens, yet does not see them as absolutely necessary, and focuses on orienting to 'Right View' first as the means to awaken (his book is out of print, but available online now, search for the title in google).

Myron's the Man
Double Yoi is the one of the best books that I have ever read. It is truely an entertaining read. It is a well written biographical look at Myron Cope's career in journalism and broadcasting as well as a combination of some of his favorite anecdotes. Any one who loves Myron Cope should read this book as well as those who hate him. I think that they will find a new appreciation for the Pittsburgh Icon. Cope also threw in some criticisms of things and people he doesn't really care for but he does this in a classy way. I am a huge Steeler fan but I don't think that one needs to be to enjoy this book.
Great Job Myron!!

A Pittsburgh Treasure
Though I'm not a native Pittsburgher, I have been a fan of the Pirates, Pens ('67), and Steelers since the early sixties when I was a kid.
Myron Cope is not just "Okel Dokel!", he's GREAT!
Myron is a native Pittsburgh sports media institution, just as Bob Prince was and Mike Lange is, and this book belongs on the shelf right next to Jim O'Brien's "We Had 'Em All The Way". Now all we need is a volume on Mike Lange. "Double Yoi" is one insightful, side-splitting read.

Great Stories Make this Book Live
This book proves that Myron Cope may be a fine broadcaster but he is a superior writer. Myron spins stories from the old days, from the greats he knew, from the Super Bowl years and from his many years as a writer for the Saturday Evening Post and Sports Illustrated. His early years as a newspaperman in Erie, PA and Pittsburgh are described with care and hilarity. Even more funny is his experience as a salesman. He comes across as a kind hearted guy who is stuck in the wrong profession. Many people can identify with that feeling, but if you aren't one who ever went through hell in an early job Myron's prose will let you know what it's like.

Reading the book, it seems as though Myron is seated next to you talking about his life and the people he got to know. The pieces and paragraphs on Clemente, Cosell, Bradshaw and Noll are special standouts.

His writing lets you see the man, not the "character" he has created in the broadcast booth. He's the kind of guy you'd like to meet in a neighborhood bar or a local restaurant and have a drink with every week. The book comes close to giving the reader that feel.

SUPERIOR METHODOLOGY; VERY COMPREHENSIVE
Designed by experts, and with care; "Current Pediatric Diagnosis & Treatment" is one book that both paediatricians and GPs know too well. It covered every aspect of child's health-care in a way that would arouse envy in other texts. Its superior methodology is one factor that has kept its name above others. The authors of this book deserve tons of commendations. They did a fantastic job. Every chapter of the book speaks for them!
Its illustrations are utterly comprehensive; and the frequency with which its information is updated ensure that only the most current advances in paediatrics are included.
Very welcomed! Books of this quality would ensure that doctors (and medics) will always live upto their respective billings.

Children won't seem a problem with this book
Everyone recommended big fat books of pediatrics, with lots of words and little answers. But this book is all you want and need to know about in your pediatrics rotations. With diagnostic essentials, getting through diseases just gets a lot easier, and with therapeutical answers, it just builds good doctors. I specially liked the chapter on antimicrobials and vaccines, so essential in pediatric care. Definitely a must have for a good medical student with lot to learn and too little time (at the end, that's what medicine is all about). All my medschool classmates just wanted to have my book.

An Excellent hands on manual
This book is a great combination of up to date, accurate information in a clear and concise form. It gives you all of the details you need to make a sound diagnosis and is still easily readible. A great value and a solid buy for both in the office and the hospital.

Eastern Forests ( Audubon Society Nature Guides)
Eastern Forests: The Audubon Society Nature Guides by Ann Sutton is a comprehensive field guide which is fully illustrated with color photographs. Trees, wildflowers, birds, mammals, insects, reptiles, and mushrooms are found within the pages of this field guide.

This comprehensive field guide comprises the Eastern Forests of North America from Hudson Bay to Florida. Here you'll find the majority of what is found in these forests and woodlands. I found it quite useful while hiking in this area of North America. There is a glossary of terms used in the book that is very helpful and the habitat of the animals is found by each picture.

I'm sure that this book will be used if you do much hiking in this area, as I have used it to identify many flora and fauna.

Print more of this one!
Definitely not a waste of paper! This guide does many things very well indeed. The first part--brief but amazingly informative--gives the big picture about how forests work. It takes a quick and penetrating glance at each of the various forest communties found in Eastern North America, from the boreal forests of the north and the oak-and-hickory forests of the Ozarks to the mixed deciduous forests of the states south of the Great Lakes to the complex and ancient forests of the southern Appalachians. The second part gives the little pictures--hundreds of small but clear photographs of trees, shrubs, flowers, birds and animals. These photos are great for identifying common species quickly (bring the book with you when you walk) and include page-number references to the many informative mini-essays about each species which make up the third portion of the book. The book also contains a helpful glossary and an index. The Audubon "Western Forests" is equally good.

Easy to use, compact size, great text and photos
An excellent field guide for Eastern North America (from NE Canada to Florida, USA)... Excellent photos of trees, leaves, fruit, flowers, animals, mushrooms, and insects: they're not *all* there, but the selection is a useful and interesting subset. Highly recommended.

Flying over Brooklyn

The Perfect "Just One More Story" Before Bed
The other night, my three-year-old son couldn't sleep. I took out my daughter's copy of Flying Over Brooklyn and started to read. He was wide-eyed and smiling through the entire adventure and absolutely surprised when we reached the end, "That was a dream?" he asked. "Yes, go to sleep so you can have an adventure too," I replied. "Wow, I would if I could have dreams THAT good!" I am sure that when my children are older they will appreciate the dreamy glimpses of a world far removed from our own (Brooklyn) and the historic significance of a child's recollection of an unusual event, but for now, they simply enjoy sharing the boy's dream-come-true flight over a snow-covered city. Meanwhile, I appreciate the positive spin it gives to the words, "Bed-time!"

Great book for city kids
"This is the first childrens book I have seen written for city kids. Every city kid will appeciate this story about flying over the city and seeing the great snow storm. It is truly a child's dream.

A Childhood Memory
Mr. Uhlberg's book FLYING OVER BROOKLYN should be required reading for any child who can read, or even before he has that ability. It is a lovely illustrated book that my grandchildren were delighted and fascinated by, especially when I was able to corroborate how the little boy felt. I, too, as a little boy lived through that blizzard in 1946 and that made the grandkids' eyes open wide, I guess with admiration that I had survived the ordeal. Kudos to Mr. Uhlberg. Give us more, sir!

A superb book for anyone interested in Reich
Wilhelm Reich was many things in his lifetime- a student of Freud, a political activist, a research scientist, and an inventor. His work was decades ahead of its time and is finally being rediscovered and reevaluated by the public. If, like me, you are interested in Reich and his work, you might want to check out a novel called We All Fall Down, by Brian Caldwell. it draws heavily on Reich's theories, particularly Listen Little Man and The Mass Psychology Of Facism. It's a great introduction to Reich's work and the entire novel draws heavily on his theory. It's very interesting watching an author explore his theories in a fictional setting. Well worth reading.

An Astonishing Biography
This has to be one of the best biographies ever written. It is certainly the best ever written about Reich. You will not be able to put it down or forget it after you've read it. The effort that went into presenting all of the aspects of Reich's life and work is staggering. That extraordinary flame of humanity, Willhelm Reich, is presented here as never before. Bravo!

Mad, bad and dangerous to know.
An extraordinary read, totally compelling as you follow Reich through the traumas of the twentieth century, his own grip on reality fragmenting all the time. And yet he remains a strangely attractive character - sure he is a "crackpot" but the book forces you to re-examine conventional views of society and science. The author, although obviously an enthusiast for Reich's idiosyncratic "Weltanschauung", never flinches from describing Reich's rampant excesses. Ultimately, you're left with a sense of sadness that the world proved too small a space for Reich and the nagging feeling that time will increasingly vindicate his extraordinary ideas.

Myron Uhlberg is an awsome children's author
Mad Dog McGraw is wonderfully written and illustrated. Our Grandchildren require that it be read several times in an evening. The message contained in the book is not lost on a three year old who is enthralled with the change in the main character as well as the little boy. She has come to understand it and relates it to things which come up in her daily life.

GREAT BOOK!
We checked this book out from the library and we now have to buy it because it became one of our 20 month old sons favorite books. He loves looking at the wonderful illustrations as I read the story to him.

Mad Dog McGraw
I agree with my children that this book is simply adorable! My four-year-old thinks the main character has some "great ideas" in dealing with his dilemma while my two-year-old wants his own mad dog! It is a very funny book and the goofy illustrations add to the humor. In addition, there is a very good lesson for the children (and me!) regarding relationships with others.

Outstanding!!!!!!!
This was my first time drywalling. Mr Ferguson's book was invaluabe to me having a sucessful project. After having water damage from a broken pipe to my finished basement, I got estimates from contractors... Determined not to pay those rates I forged ahead on my own completing the project for a fraction of the estimates. With Mr. Ferguson's step-by-step advice, I ended up with a job that has professional quality. Ferguson gives you everything you need from the choice of proper tools to using screws over nails to how to make repairs. Simply Outstanding! Thanks Mr. Ferguson!

Great help
I bought this to prepare for drywalling the small storage area under my stairs for the kids to use and it had all I needed to get the job done effceintly. If you'v never drywalled before and need to this will help.

Very necessary if you're a beginner drywaller.
I had never even watched any drywalling before I plunged headlong into remodeling a room in my home. I read through this book, went by Mr. Ferguson's step-by-step advice, and ended up with a job that I am quite proud of. My only regret is that I chose not to texture. I painted the finished walls with a semi-gloss paint, and if the light is right, you can see some of my sanding marks. This year I removed a door and patched the hole with drywall. His instructions were invaluable, and yes, I textured this time. It looks great. Thank you Mr. Ferguson!

Friendly Fascism, the New Face of Power in America
Published in Hardcover by M Evans & Co (1980)
Author: Bertrand Myron Gross
Amazon base price: $15.00
Used price: $20.00
Average review score:

Reality is worse, much worse!
Bertram Gross, while writing this book some 20 years ago, predicted a lot, but far from all. The fascism is here allright, but the "friendly" part is missing, and missing badly! Today's America is the land of the unfree, enslaved people, the land of presently the largest in the world and still growing at an enormous rate Gulag for the poor and disadvantaged. We now hold more of our people in cages than any other country in the world, both in real numbers and per capita. We punish our people and punish them harshly, frequently for totally victimless crimes, or for the crime of wanting to feel better in a hostile world called America. We hold in cages more mentally ill people than any other dictatorship in the world and many of them have been denied their freedom because of their actions triggered by their illnesses. We grant due process of law selectively only to those, who are rich enough to afford to buy it, while processing others through the legal grinder of the human souls, with the grotesque and bizzarre figure called "public defender" assuring near 100%, or frequently exactly 100% rate of conviction. And yes, torture of prisoners in America is quite well-documented fact. So, where's that "friendly" fascism?

Our government kills its people for the crime of murdering another, most of the time, only one human being, but then it sends our army into other countries, kills many thousands of totally innocent people, including entire families and small children, injures, disfigures thousands more, and never admits any wrongdoing and is never punished in any way.

Our Constitution has been raped and destroyed. We now have the largest police force in the world, also both in real numbers and per capita of population. Federal Government is involved in activities forbidden by the Consitution and it doesn't even feel the need to explain, justify the fact. Police breakins into people's homes, searches without warrants take pleace in massive numbers everyday (just watch any TV show Cops - they don't even hide it, they want you to get used to it). They no longer must justify any traffic stop - now they can stop you only because they ar the police, and you are not!

Still, Bertram Gross saw more than what 99.99% of Americans did. This book is well-documented, scholarly written and definitely interesting to read. But do yourself, your country and the humanity a favor. Read also, listen to Gore Vidal, Noam Chomsky, go to any search engine on the Internet and enter "American Gulag", "fascism in America", "prison nation USA", visit at least a few of those sites, study, read, learn, understand. Check www.amnestyusa.org, www.lp.org, www.aclu.org, www.hrw.org, www.cato.org. Until you can, until everything is not yet shut down and destroyed. And never, ever say you didn't know...

"...Huey Long once said, 'Fascism will come to America in the name of anti-fascism'. I'm afraid, based on my own long experience, that fascism will come to America in the name of national security."

Nafeez Moseaddeq Ahmed, Preface
and quote from Jim Garrison, New Orleans
District Attorney, 1967, from the Conclusion
THE WAR ON FREEDOM

Get this book while you can
I ran across this book when I was 17; it spooked me then. I decided to pick it up again and see how far we've come, and I am amazed at how on the mark Bertram Gross was in his analysis of elite control of America.

These days, even reading a book like this likely gets you branded a "conspiracy theorist" but Gross points out several times he's not referring to conspiracies -- the Big Government/Big Business combine that is the fueling engine of fascism is alive and well. Indeed, stronger than ever in this country.

This book is a deep, frightening account of elite power structures in America. Friendly fascism is fascism with a friendly face -- not so much jackboots, mass rallies, and so forth that comprise the popular stereotype of fascism, but rather an insidious, public-relations savvy manipulation of power for profit.

What impresses me most is how thorough and cogent Gross's analysis is, and I am sad more people haven't read this book. While it came out in 1980, anybody who is politically aware today will see that, rather than being dated, Gross was definitely ahead of his time in his thinking. This is a big book (@400 pages), and densely packed with information, but it is definitely worth your time.

Fascism is wrong - just wrong - but the book is still cool.
Friendly fascism - now what feelings does that title invoke in me? First let us look at each word on its own. Friendly: seems nice enough, pretty innocent and all. Fascism: wrong, just wrong. Such contradictory terms, friendly and fascism. Since I, Bernie "Fascist" Schwartz have been witness to quite a lot of fascism in my life, I know how wrong it is. But back to the point. The book, even having the word fascist in the title, is still cool.

Taxes and Business Strategy: A Global Planning Approach

Authors: Mark Wolfson and Myron S. Scholes
Amazon base price: $115.00

Average review score:

A good text
Excerpts of the text are used in the Taxes and Business Strategy course at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. Scholes and Wolfson have provided an excellent, multi-perspective framework for thinking about tax issues and how taxes can impact the value of a transaction. Unfortunately, S&W have been making too much money in the private sector to update this book so some of the details in the book regarding tax laws are dated.

Solid treatment of material
We used this book as the text for a masters level course in our masters of accouting program. Students responded well and appeared to enjoy the book. They found the treatment of the material to be at an apporpriate level, and they rated the book a five on a five point anonymous rating. The only suggestion they proferred was for some companion piece covering a few of the more currently used planning techniques.

Great Text For a Complex Subject
As another reviewer states, the material for this book was used in the Taxes & Business Strategy class at both the University of Chicago and Stanford's business schools. Compared to other texts on this subject, it is actually readable and, more importantly, understandable to a non-tax professional. The are an abundance of examples that you can apply directly to situations which arise in real world situations. The 2nd edition has been updated to reflect most recent changes in the tax law.

The book is a must for anybody in investment banking, law, private equity, and other fields where a tax plays a large role in determining the outcome and structure of deals, compensation, etc.
