If You Love O'Keeffe....
If you love New Mexico, O'Keeffe or just fine photography this is a book for you. This intimate look at O'Keeffe through text and photos gives us a better look at this complicated artist. The photos by M. Wood are outstanding, as he takes you through how he contacted Ms. O'Keeffe, through the subtle games she and her gardener played. It was easy to see the love of the land that not only Ms. O'Keeffe had, but the same feeling seems to to just pop out of each photogrpah that Mr. Woods shows us.

People of the Dancing Sky
While the photos are nice, I would rather have seen more of a focused narrative rather than the scattered glimpses of these people. It is a shame that the photographer fell into the Curtis style of posing people in inauthentic contexts, such as the little boys playing lacrosse in their gustowehs. Teachers using this book are forwarned to read carefully the preface explaining the differences in traditional Iroquoian dress styles and the pow wow dresses or contemporary modern dance costumes shown in this book. It was otherwise fun to see so many people I know. I hope to see more books written by, photographed by, Native Peoples. I would still recommend it, but use it carefully if you are an educator.

A challenging thought-provoking book
This work of a seasoned Mennonite pastor-theologian provides a panorama of theological principles making the doctrine of reconciliation the keystone for all its contents. Augsburger contends that reconciliation in Christian theology must be reassessed continually to determine how it measures up to the biblical principles endowed by the Greatest of all Reconcilers--Jesus Christ. The book is a combination of a systematic and practical theology overview. Having been influenced by the 16th century Anabaptist theological matrix, and adding the contributions of major evangelical and Neo-orthodox theologians of the twentieth century, the author discusses theological rubrics in an orderly fashion. The major objectives of the book are: (1) to remind the theological world that the Anabaptist tradition has considerable contributions to the contemporary theological landscape, (2) to influence theological thinking in the global community, and (3) to remind the free-church movement of its core values. The author achieves his desired objectives. The style of writing moves along lines of a systematic theological treatise. On occasion, few incidents of the author's ministry experiences illustrate a point and illuminate the narrative. The title of the book is taken from the parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15:22: "The Father said, `Bring the best robe and put it on him.'" Esther Augsburger, the author's wife, an artist, has prepared a sculpture in which a God figure is robbing a kneeling "prodigal son" figure. It has given the author a symbol for the title and it adorns the cover of the book. Augsburger relies on the thought of major 16th century Anabaptist leaders as well as of Mennonite thinkers like the late John Howard Yoder. He elucidates with clarity some major responsibilities of the free-church tradition to the world Christian community. Augsburger shows his wide knowledge of theological discourse from many sources. One interesting perspective developed in chapter nine: "A community of the third way," seeks to plead for moderation among Christians. Evangelicals have moved too far to the right, even cooperating with the government which in Anabaptist thought is anathema. Mainliners have moved too far to the left of the theological and ethical spectrum. Augusburger pleads for a uniqueness that keeps the church away from identifying with the culture and opts for the stance of "progressive evangelicals" who endorse a third way. He suggests that the writings of Jacques Ellul, Lesslie Newbigin, Jim Wallis, Ron Sider and Walter Wink can be helpful in guiding the church of the twenty first century to be more distinct from the culture while at the same time planting the seed of uniqueness that 1 Peter 2:9-12 encourages. The author reaffirms basic Mennonite tenets like non-violence, pacifism, and compassionate mission. He devotes a chapter to mission. He is open to dialogue with other world religions in the Newbigin style, maintaining the exclusivity of Christianity. This writer resonates with the contents of the book. Ministering at the United Nations amid religious pluralism and in cooperation with many religious organizations seeking peace, upholding human rights, and related issues, one is encouraged by the concept of the church as "a community of the third way." The Mennonite Central Committee has significant benevolent, courageous and effective work in regions of the world where ethnic strife, war mongering, and violations of human rights are rampant. I am convinced that the commitment to reconciliation, "a third way" approach to church identity, and an updated missiology, is worthy of greater attention not only among believers of the free-church tradition but as well among believers of the mainline tradition. David F. D'Amico representative of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship at the United Nations, New York, since 1995 was former Billy Graham Professor of Evangelism, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY (1989-1995), and Executive Director of the Metropolitan New York

A good book, even for a novice like me
This book has some nice puzzles in it, including some that have even stumped 'veteran' lateral puzzle thinkers I know. Some of them are easy enough to get right off, but that is more the exception than the rule.

I haven't read all of the solutions yet, but only a very few puzzles had truly implausible answers (those that did are why I didn't give the book top rating).

I've made several of the recipes in this book and have found them to be wonderful! Some are bit long in preparation for everyday, but as the title suggests, these are impressive meals! The Black Bean Lasagna is a hit every time, and not really hard to make at all!

Pretty Dry
Myron Arms' "Riddle of the Ice" includes a collection of the most current theories used to try to explain the creation, movement, and distribution of ice in the Arctic, and not much else. For those looking for an adventure story, look elsewhere. If you're interested in the personal lives of the crew and the skipper, what you'll find is Arms' reflections on his own caustic nature and a few references to his encounters with shipmate "Blue," which convieniently lend Arms an avenue, as most of the rest of his accounts of contact with the shipmates do,to show the reader how, while he's gruff and abrasive, his propensity for always being right usually is justified in the end. As for the science behind "Riddle of the Ice," Arms left it up to the real scientists, providing the reader with a decent book report at best.

I'd have to agree with the skeptical reviewers.
There's just not that much here. As a travelogue, Arms does not have a whole lot to say, either about sailing or about the places he visits. It's not clear why he took the trip at all -- some sort of scientific investigation -- other than to see Greenland. If you want to read about a visit to the coast of Greenland and Labrador, I would recommend Rowing_To_Latitude, by a woman (whose name eludes me) about rowing these and other coasts. As for the science in Arms' book, there's not enough of that to satisfy, either. He's talked to some interesting people with interesting research, but there's about enough there to fill a long magazine article. He uses the device of jumping back and forth from the sailing trip to his discussions with scientists, but this feels forced, and eventually calls attention to the fact that his trip doesn't seem to advance the science at all. As another reviewer noted, his characterization of his fellow travelers makes them seem one-dimensional, at best, and if you read the afterword you'll see that there were two other people on board -- including his wife -- whom he omitted altogether.

A Lyrical Look at Earth's Thermostat
While researching for an environmental book, we had the great good fortune to come across Myron Arm's wonderful story of the mysteries of sea and ice. In lovely, leisurely prose, Arms takes the reader to the source of one of nature's greatest happenings: the unending collision between the Great Ocean Conveyor Belt and the mad southerly migration of Arctic ice. This epic rumination makes it incontestably clear that much of Earth's climate is driven by the two frozen chunks of ice at the Northern and Southern poles--both of which are melting at an astonishing rate. For me, the unstated question Arms leaves us with is, "So what happens when, within a hundred years or so, the ice sheets have melted so much that they can no longer counterbalance our furiously warming Earth?" As a planet, we better figure that out very soon.

An interview with Romare Bearden
I am a great admirer of Romare Bearden and when I bought this book I wanted to learn more about him and his art. This book has great pictures but not quite the amount of information I was looking for. I wanted to learn more about Romare's life and the book focus on an interview with Romare Bearden and a brief overview of his life. I believe the author was thinking on the saying that "pictures say a thousand words."

The Best of Bearden
This book is a fantastic source of information, both written and visual, on one of our country's most underrated and neglected artists. Romare Bearden's career spanned over 50 years and his oeuvre encompasses many styles. If ever there was a "Renaissance" man of American art, this artist deserves the title. The book provides more than adequate information on his early years, family background, influences, and also brings to light the fantastic education Bearden procured for himself by studying with some of the most important artists of his time, Grosz, for example. A fantastic primer for someone looking to get a well-rounded glimpse of a true genius.

Best Book on a Great Painter; Could be Better
Romare Bearden is arguably one of the two or three most important African American artists of the 20th-Century (or just: one of the most important American artists). After moving through several styles from the 30s through the 50s, including social realism and abstract expressionism, Bearden found collage in the 1960s, and from then till his death in the late 80s he did his most important work. Sometimes he constructed his collages out of photos, assembling, let's say, a street scene, out of disparate parts. Even the faces will be constructed out of different eyes, mouth, etc. The result is an image that powerfully evokes the urban life of the period: its precarious hanging together, its danger of pulling apart, and its jazzy, angular rhythms, generated as the viewer's eye bounces from part to part, along the seams, to the image as a whole, and back to the parts. In later works Bearden cut the shapes for his collages from materials he'd painted, or assembled the collage and then painted over it. These new techniques add a subjective element, a visionary interior to the kinetic exterior, resulting in even more powerful paintings.

This book is the best single place to go to look at Bearden's paintings. It has a large selection of reproductions, many in beautiful color. It also has a number of fascinating interviews the author conducted with Bearden, in which the painter comes off as extremely knowledgeable about the history of art, and thoughtful about his own projects. I do wish the book had been better organized. Parts of Bearden's life and art seem left out, while what does appear seems to come in no particular order. Just because Bearden's best work was collage, a book about him doesn't have to be organized like a collage.

only so-so
While this book does have some decent puzzles, I was overall somewhat disappointed. I found that many of the puzzles were not puzzling at all, the first thing I thought of was the correct answer or near to it.

I have not gone through all of the book yet, but so far I would not reccomend this to someone who wanted truly "mind-sharpening" and challenging puzzles.

stimulating
A solid book if you want to build the mind.

Intellectually stimulating
The puzzles in this book truly are mind-sharpening. I enjoyed this book & others by this author because it makes you look at life from a different perspective. The illustrations show a dry sense of humor that I enjoy.
