diagnostic review
Excellent source for diagnosis and management. Includes signs, symptoms and specific diagnostic tests for all the common, and some less common, eye diseases. Interesting "holistic" approach for treatment and management options including pharmacologic, nonpharmacologic, and dietarty/lifestyle prescriptions. It should replace Wills' as a first reference for primary care providers.

Side splitting funny ! ! !
Its great to see this book back in print... I must have read it over 18 years ago... it was hillarious then, and its just as funny now... I dare say almost as funny as those old 45's of his I grew up listening to. In fact, I'm happy that a "Greatest Hits" CD has been released, but it made me miss all those other 45s that I borrowed from my father's collection (and seem to have been borrowed back - - I can't find them !)

Mickey Katz was a brilliant story teller... the book is packed with jokes and anecdotes - - even a bit of off risque humor here and there... and you can almost hear him talking in that nasal half all American/half Yiddish accent.

Of course, someone had to bring it up to date... Josh Kun offers a "serious" and scholarly social commentary on the significance of Mickey Katz in Jewish society and American life. - - (Insightful, but Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....) once Mickey Katz steps in though, get ready for an incredible read... if you grew up in a traditional Jewish family, it'll bring back not only memories, but make you laugh your tookus off... and if you didn't... its still hillarious - - from stories of traditional Mexican musicians in Sombreros playing Klezmor when Mickey Katz's Yiddish parody of Tico Tico actually made him a Latin celebrity, to the story about the guy in the audience at the Jean Harlow show's with the rain coat who'd put on a show of his own...

Overall, this is one of those can't put down, laugh outloud books... (Wish he left some video footage behind... to the best of my knowledge he only appeared briefly in one film... playing clarinet for about 7 seconds in Thoroughly Modern Millie.)

Pictures of Adam is a delightful book
I found Pictures of Adam in my school libarary and checked it out with absoulty no intention of ever reading it. It must of been a gift from God that I finished my other book because Pictures of Adam very well may be the best book I have ever read. Reading about Adam and Lisa really...Oh I don't know how to explain...I actually had a yearning to be Lisa. How romantic would it be to have a boyfreind who told you he never kissed a girl and who actually cried in front of you? I was really upset with Lisa for not being more understanding when Adam took one of her mother's paper weights. Its not his fault his sister has nothing to play with but junk and only wanted for her to be happy. For crying out loud they have an outhouse and a dirt floor! But I'm glad they got back together. They really do belong with eachother. I don't want to give anything else away but I'm upset that you can't rate a book higher than 5 stars. Well all I have to say is if you don't read this book your missing out on a huge thrill.

The Politics of Social Transformation in Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan (Contemporary Issues in the Middle East)

A SUPERB ACADEMIC WORK COVERING THE NON-ARAB MIDEAST
It is not easy to draw parallels between nations with similar histories or backgrounds. The mosaic of mankind creates variations that are not limited by borders or even categorizations. The three nations discussed share things in common: they all speak Indo-European languages (albeit altered due to Semitic influences); a common religious background (Islam predominates, but Iran is predominantly Shi'i or Shi'a); and historical currents that separate and unite the three nations. Iran, Afghanistan, and western Pakistan all belong to a greater Persian civilization (which expands to include the Kurds in the west) that has adapted to Islamic conversion in different ways. All three nations have had to deal with dismemberment by sea-faring and land-faring expansionist nations from Europe and herein lies the differences. Iran has developed the most literate and socially advanced society of the three, but lacks the social and political freedom found in British-influenced Pakistan. Pakistan has had to adapt as a new nation with an ancient past as a crossroads of civilization (primarily Indo-Iranian) and contentious neighbors (notably India). Afghanistan has been ravaged by wars since ancient times, but remains a strategically vital country. Ethnic politics further confuse the issues both within and without these states. All share cross-border ethnic groups such the Pashtuns (the largest group in Afghanistan and 2nd largest in Pakistan), Farsiwans (Iranian Shi'is found in Afghanistan), Baluchis (living in Iran and Pakistan as well as Afghanistan), and groups that border nations outside the area of this collection of monographs (such as Kurds in Iran, Tajiks and various Turks in Afghanistan, and Panjabis and Kashmiris in Pakistan). The attempts to create monolithic societies in such countries is often futile and difficult to establish. The issue at hand in this work is to analyze the societies, politics, and also the histories of these nations and the divergent paths they have all taken. This is a prodigious task that is tackled with vigor and the result is a one of a kind work on a region of the Near East that is not fully understood by the rest of the world.

The Power to Bless
This is another enlightening book by Dr. Myron Madden. He explains that we all need to feel that we have God's blessing. Pastors are in a unique position to communicate God's blessing because people can sense the pastor's unconditional acceptance of their uniqueness, and people usually have tremendous faith in the clergy's knowledge of and closeness to God. This book can benefit the lay person as well as the pastor.

Raise the Dead!
This wonderful book gives practical ways of dealing with the death of a loved one. There is a natural grief process to help us through if we don't deny our emotional response to our loved ones' death. The book explains that if we don't allow the grief process to proceed, we get "stuck" and our energy for enjoying life is frozen. It's as if we too are dead to life! Through not giving death more power than it really has, we graduate to acceptance and are able to live life to its fullest again. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with the loss of a loved one.

A shadow like a leopard
I like 'a shadow like a leopard' because it tells you what the streets of New York are really about. Ramon Santiago is a 14 year old boy and yet keeps a knife in pocket. He is helpless without his knife. Ramon who is trys to get into Harpos gang wants to be a macho. His father who is in jail for fighting for the freedom of Puerto Rico always told him to be a man. Now Ramon wants to make him proud by being in Harpos gang. Until Harpo tells him he has to steal money from an artist Glasser. Glasser inspires Ramon to follow his dream. It was a very sad book and made me cry, because Ramon doesn't have anyone yet Glasser and him build a very good friendship.
