I love Carol Orsborn's interview
I am a big fan of Carol Orsborn's books (including "Inner Excellence at Work: The Path to Meaning, Spirit and Success.") It's great to read her in an informal interview with the folks at New Dimensions. They really capture the flavor of her wisdom and advice. All the authors who are featured make an important contribution to the field of spirituality and business. Read this book!

Incisive insights into 3 nations of the Iranian plateau
A scholarly work that tells the reader more about Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan then any tour book and most encyclopedias. The mosaic tapestry of peoples, cultures, and religious sects is presented clearly and with great detail. Each nation is presented as the heir to a unique civilization, but is torn by ethnic divisions and political instability. As three non-Arab Islamic nations that exist along ancient invasion routes overlapping into Western, Central, and South Asia the common historical bonds are explored, but the differences are also pointed out. Like many countries in the Near East ethnic groups overlap past the modern frontiers, creating concerns about nationalism and secessionist movements. All of these issues are explored as are larger geo-political ones regarding the military, civil unrest, and the role of democracy in three undemocratic societies (although Pakistan has moved towards a more democratic status of late). This is a fascinating and informative look at eastern wing of the broa

Teaching Science in the Block (Teaching in the Block)
Published in Paperback by Eye on Education (2001)
Authors: Alvin M. Pettus and Myron E. Blosser
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

A wonderful book for the middle or high school teacher
This book provides a detailed explaination of what a block schedule is. The authors write a skeleton outline of what components should be in a lesson plan for the block schedule. Then the authors describe and give examples of every activity they have suggested you might include in your lesson. This is an outstanding guide, because it not only tells you what to do, but gives you examples of everything they suggest. They do not leave you to find your own way, after giving you a few vague ideas. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Three Friends

Three Friends--good for the soul
Myron Levoy's Three Friends captures your mind. It made Myron Levoy my favorite author when I was a teenager. It's about three 14-year-olds--one boy, the self-conscious Joshua, and two girls, the energetic Karen and the quiet Lori. The two girls are close friends when Karen meets Joshua, an avid chess player. While a sweet teenage love develops between Joshua and Karen, Lori becomes increasingly attracted to and jealous of both of them. She feels guilty for eyeing her best friend's boyfriend but then realizes that some of her erotic daydreams focus on Karen. It is here when the reader realizes that Lori is drifting into a psycholgical abyss beyond the confusion surrounding her sexual identity. What makes the story suspenseful is that the perspective alternates between Joshua's and Lori's, revealing to the reader what goes on in each of their heads. However, we never find out what Karen thinks although she is the center of attention in this emotional triangle. Detailed narrations of Joshua's passion for chess lend another interesting touch to the book.

Empowering! the journey from death camps to Meaningful Life
The photos of the survivors are piercing. The stories are unbelievable. Each survivor's story begins with their "normal" life in prewar Europe. We learn how they survived the war and death and slave camps in which most of their families perished. After liberation these people were able to create meaningful lives, create families, and make the world a better place. Though I have studied the Holocaust in depth I was shocked to learn the names of dozens more concentration camps. This book gives hope and strength to anyone who is oppressed on any level.

Understanding the Teacher Union Contract: A Citizen's Handbook

Giving Away the Right to Manage
If you wondered what was wrong in government schooling, the union contract is a good place to find answers. Teacher unions often control both sides of the bargaining table by influencing school board elections and policy making. Management (encouraged by bad court decisions) has given away its rights to fire poor teachers, to pay on basis of performance, and to hold teachers responsible for results. School boards sign contracts that prohibit them to contract out failing schools to private management, to create charter schools without union approval, or to issue vouchers so children in failing schools can select a private alternative to government-operated schooling.

This is a scholarly book that presents facts without a chip on its shoulder against unions. But the reader may question in the end why as a society we would place monopoly power in the hands of the National Education Association and its state and local affiliates. We certainly were not considering the welfare of our children in so doing.
