A must-have for anyone starting a freelance graphic business
I had been running a web design business for about a year when I finally bought this book, and boy do I wish that I had had it when I started out -- I could have avoided so many problems.

Here are just a few of the topics this book explains about: legalities of starting a business, writing a business plan, how to write estimates and proposals (and even gives samples of both), how to bill, how to deal with troublesome clients, how to respond when clients question a price hike, how long to wait before taking action against a client who is delinquent in their bill, and what your resources are to extract final payment.

Definitely a must have for anyone looking into starting their own freelance graphic business -- I heartily recommend it!

#1 resource for designers & freelancers; novice or seasoned
I've alread read it once and now twice, hi-liting for more emphasis. I run a very successful graphic design business, and consider this book a #1 resource. I recommend it to everyone in the design and freelance field. From starting out with minimal resources to planning the future and long-term success. Excellent strategies in pricing, sales, and working with clients. . .good and bad!

Comprehensive!
For those of us designers who have the creative right side of the brain, but tend to lack the business left side of the brain, this is an excellent resource. I would highly reccommend this book to anyone who hopes to pursue a career as a freelance designer or to start your own design company. It is fairly easy reading, and is well written to keep the creative mind from straying too far from the lesson. Overall a great book!

An excellent introduction to magic effects!
This is, truly, an encyclopedia of magic effects. Virtually all types of magic effects are covered in a systematic and comprehensive manner. Eleven chapters cover card magic and describe all the important sleights. Subsequent chapters cover money magic, rope magic, silk magic, impromptu magic, mental effects, sponge balls, and cups and balls. The final chapter describes large stage illusions that can be built at home. Frequently, after a sleight or trick is described, there follows a paragraph titled "Comments and Suggestions" which points out important ideas to remember. There is a wealth of good information contained in these small paragraphs. The text is amply illustrated with numerous drawings that help show the proper method of handling the sleight, move or effect being discussed. Certainly every aspiring magician will find the number and variety of effects sufficient to include many in his or her routine, or even to specialize in one particular area. An important work of warning. Twenty years ago I read a well-known magician's assessment of Mark Wilson. He said, "He's a brilliant buisnessman, a good entertainer, but a poor magician." This book supports that view. The effects and tricks described are great; you could develop a professional act from the material within. But the book fails to help the reader make the transition from someone who does tricks to someone who is a magician. Additional topics like how to practice, how to develop a routine, how to rehearse, how to present the tricks as entertainment, and showmanship would certainly have made this "a complete course in magic". That said, the book is outstanding in what it does do: compile and describe the wonderful variety of magical effects available. This is a very worthwhile addition to your library of magic.

This is an excellent book on magic.
This book can be used by someone who is just beginning in the art of magic or it can be used by a seasoned professional. I read this book when I first started doing magic a few years ago, and I used tricks that I thought were "easy". I now know tons of tricks, I have been trained by different magicians, and I have performed for crowds ranging from one person to a few hundred people, but I still return to this book for more guidance. This is a must buy.

Great Book!!!!
I started magic about two year ago. This book taught me more about magic in two days then i had learned in two years!!! It has all different kinds of tricks. It has card tricks, mental tricks all the way up to levitation!!! I really enjoyed this book!! I will always keep it. I used to just perform in front of my family, now i am getting hired in all sorts of places!! This is a must have book for all magicians!

Storyhour Favorite!
As a children's librarian, I always picked this book up first during storyhour. Here is a hint! I use a dog puppet to tell the story for me! Then each child can meet and greet the puppet after the reading is over. Very interactive. Try to talk to kids about being kind to animals after you read this one - it will make them really listen to your message.

Excellent for even the youngest children
My two year old son absolutely loves this story. The cute rhyme-style keeps his attention...and the colorful, detailed pictures keep him pointing and talking for quite some time. We particularly like all of the colorful characters who enter the taxi...this book is a real winner in our home.

Great book!
My 2-year-old absolutely loves this book. He can't get enough of it. Fortunately, it's a nice story so I don't mind reading it 15 times a day.

SPIRITUALITY AND SUCCESS
I read this book because of the author's skillful and articulate interview on the Bill O'Reilly televised show. I liked his demeanor and his clarity on the power of perception. His book is equally concise. He offers common sense religious avenues for dealing with the issues of today, and transforming your life. His road map covers emotions, finances, career, health, parenting. Among his six strategic steps to success is "stage a comeback". I especially liked that passage. It dissipates the perception of failure. A mistake is an opportunity to make a wiser decision the next time. If you enjoyed, Reverend Jesse Lee Peterson's "From Rage to Responsibility", and Harold Klemp's,"Secret of Love", you will glean a lot from Pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell's , "Gospel of Good Success". I did. Start working on your self-esteem and your self-confidence today. Your success is in your hands.

Kirbyjohn Caldwell is an inspiration!
I caught Kirbyjohn Caldwell's presentation at the Texas Book Festival in 1999. He read from his book the Gospel of Good Success, and I was blown away by his energy, his positive attitude and the message found in his book. He truly is a point of light, a spiritual leader and great community activist. I highly recommend his work!

The Gospel Of Good Success.
I really like this book, I think it's one of the best Christian books on success written the Author it's really knowleagble and gives a sure practical way to achieve your dreams especially How to succeed and deafeat Satan with the greatest armor in existence like the author says. And also How to overcome obstacles in life. I highly recommend this book to all.

Nurse's need this!
Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul is a book long overdue. These stories cannot help but touch the hearts and souls of all who read it, nurses or not. Nurses will recognize their own experiences somewhere in these stories, which affirm the personal nature of nursing and the importance of personal touch involved in the care of others. The authors have done nursing a wonderful service in bringing to light the touching, funny, heartfelt anecdotes shared by those at the bedside.

What's better than holiday OT and a Sales Rep with donuts?
So for nurses, what is better than holiday overtime and that nice young pharmaceutical rep with the glazed donuts? War stories! And a whole group of other nurses to share them with.

Let's face it, we have to edit our stories around lay people, temper the humor, spare them the deep, down visceral core of our feelings---the fact that have to laugh in the face of disaster, and that we cry in linen closets. But around other nurses? Honey, just sit down a minute and prop up those tired feet and let me tell you a tale....

This is what is so absolutely great about Chicken Soup For the Nurse's Soul: it's the nitty gritty on why we love our profession. And why we continue to love it in the midst of our hardest times, our darkest hours and even now when our country is in crisis with a nationwide nursing shortage. It's a book about dedication and caring. And just who it is on the other side of that thermometer.

Every story in this book is aimed right at our hearts---to make us cry, laugh, shake our heads at what we have survived, and to bring us hope and strength. To make us proud of what we do.

Kudos to Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, LeAnn Thieman--a hero in her own right-- and Nancy Mitchell Autio for this gift you have given us: The right to speak out and be proud.

Wonderful!
Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul pays grateful tribute to nurses - - those exalted and capable servants who selflessly tend the sick, injured, aged, and downhearted with deep compassion and unceasing dedication. Containing more than one hundred true stories of service and sacrifice, this uplifting book tugs on your heart strings and tickles your funny bone while artfully honoring the noble profession of nursing. Anyone who has ever been the recipient or the provider of health care will be challenged, motivated, and enlightened by these inspiring, true-life examples of exceptional courage, commitment and caring.

The perfect book for all NASCAR fans - new and old alike!
NASCAR for Dummies is definitely a "must read" for any NASCAR fan. It is the perfect book for those who are new to NASCAR... and is packed with information which even a veteran fan will appreciate.

You'll find in-depth information about a variety of topics, from car tech to how qualifying works... from how points are awarded to what some of the rules and regulations are. You'll find information about all of the different NASCAR Series, how sponsorship works, how to contact your favorite driver - or even get an autograph. There's even advice and tips for attending races in person.

The book is also loaded with NASCAR stats on different drivers, tracks and some of the sports history.

The best part about this book is that it is not written by a bystander, rather, it is written by one of the top drivers in the sport. Mark Martin is able to provide you with a view of NASCAR which I have not seen in any other book thus far.

NASCAR For Dummies takes the checkered
I was doing research for a NASCAR Web site that I was creatingwhen I came across this title. Talk about a wealth of information!Ever wonder who won the first NASCAR-sanctioned race, or what makes astock car different from a regular passenger car? Mark has the answer! From track layouts to famous families, sponsorship to qualifying, Mark covers NASCAR with a thoroughness and humor that is a rarity, and much appreciated. I recommend that everyone, from new fans to old buffs, buy and read this book. I guarantee you that you won't be disappointed!

Nascar for Dummies
I had been trying to write a similar book just for some of my friends and was delighted when I found out one of my favorite drivers, Mark Martin, had written one. Even though I am a Nascar fan, a lot of my friends aren't and I wanted to help them understand racing--that it's more than just driving around in circles. I read the book cover to cover just this morning; I couldn't put it down. Thanks Mark!

The Jazz Theory Book

Author: Mark Levine
Amazon base price: $38.00
Average review score:

Great Buy!
Mark Levine's book is perfect. He explains clearly how to play jazz from examples from the jazz pioneers. He also is able to make the theory behind the concepts exciting. This book along with Scott Miller's "Getting Into Jazz Fusion Guitar" have increased my understanding of jazz 80 fold.

A must have book for any Jazz Musician
Mark Levine's 522 page Jazz Theory book is a very readable, comprehensive and thorough exposition of Jazz theory. As Mark says in the the introduction, "a great jazz solo consists of 1% magic, 99% stuff that is explainable, analyzable, categorizeable, doable. This book is mostly about the 99% stuff". The book covers, Chord Scale Theory, Playin' the Changes, Reharmonization, The Tunes and Jazz Repertoire, Salsa and Latin Jazz. There are numerous examples and excellent lists of contrafacts, tunes listed with sources and Aebersold volumes, and recommended listening lists. The book is worth it's cost and should be in every Jazz musicians library.

Exceptional Theory Book for All Jazz Musicians
This is easily the best jazz theory resource I have ever seen. The book is exceptionally well written and is liberally sprinkled with numerous musical examples. The basics are covered here as well as some quite advanced topics.

Players of all instruments can benefit from the information presented in this book. Music reading ability in both treble and bass clefs is required.

Best book on visual effects in years
THE INVISIBLE ART is written by two special effects experts Mark Cotta Vaz who wrote two volumes of books about Industrial Light and Magic and by Craig Barron, a master matte painter who worked for Industrial Light and Magic. Together they have collected some of the most amazing artwork ever done because this art has to be good enough to make audiences believe it is something real and not just a painting. Some of the paintings are astonishing in their realism. All the great matte painters are represented here and the book is chock full of incredible paintings and behind the scenes photos. The book is sturdy hardcover and is printed on high-quality paper so it will last a lifetime. This is a must-have book for anyone interested in movies and visual effects and the best book on special effects since the last volume on Industrial Light and Magic.

Beautiful and informative... a must have!
The authors have done a definitive job with this chronicle of the unique and rather mysterious art of matte painting. The lavishly illustrated volume is strongly supported by a text that's rich with interesting production anecdotes and insights into the lives and personalities of the various practitioners of the art, in addition to the thorough technical information.

Of course, the many original paintings reproduced -- both with and without the "intrusion" of live-action elements -- is the feature that recommends it the most. Examples range from the high-tech polish of today's blockbuster productions, to classic "Golden Age" films and material from the very dawn of film.

All in all, the perfect book treatment of this subject and an indispensable addition to the library of anyone with an interest and appreciation for the true magic of the movies.

Massive Matte Attack!
For anyone interested in either painting or the history and technique of film special effects, this book (and accompanying CD-ROM) is a must. Until the last 20-25 years or so, any filmmaker needing to create impressive historical landscapes, futuristic cities, or even just more elaborate interior sets than could be affordably made, turned to the matte painter for a solution. This massive and colorful book richly chronicles the development of using oil paints on glass to create stunning illusions.

From classic films like Thief of Baghdad, The Wizard of Oz, and Citizen Kane to crowd-pleasers Mary Poppins, The Birds, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Star Wars, the book (and CD) is filled with beautiful photos showing the matte, the "live" shot, and the composited result. What I really liked was all the photos of the artists at work both in the studios and even on location, creating relatively small paintings that would soar across screens. The final chapters cover the technique's transition to the digital age. The CD-ROM is espcially cool, as uses QuickTime movies to show how seamless the composite shots really are!

I would have liked to see samples from Blade Runner, but I suspect the writers wisely wanted to keep from overemphasizing the science-fiction genre. This is a great book that deserves to be under the Christmas trees of anyone interested in film effects.

How to Be a Superhero

Funniest. Book. Ever.
This is easily the funniest book I ever read. Every page will have at least one part that will leave you rolling in fits of laughter.

If you can find it, BUY IT!

Funniest book I have ever read, hands down!
This is also the third time I will be buying this book - first two copies have mysteriously disappeared. It is incredibly stupid, but it had me laughing uncontrollably for a very long time. In public. My only regret is that the later printings have used asterisks to cover the swear words - part of the pleasure was seeing these taboo words in cold print in a pseudo-serious context...

This -IS- the funniest book you will ever read!!
Have you ever wanted to be a Superhero? Have you ever dreamed of having your high-flying adventures printed in comic book format, licensed by a fast food chain and made into a million sequels while you fight crime and watch your "pension fund" grow? Then you need this book! I have now bought 4 copies of this book for friends and myself. My copy has been read by so many people, so many times that it has disintigrated. If you don't read this book and laugh, you have no soul! Seriously! You will hurt yourself laughing. If you want to take some time to away from reality and give youself a treat, then this book is for you. And if you don't want that, what's wrong with you? Take this as either a guideline to gaining(and using superpowers) or as a safety guide for life. Afterall, many a superhero has gained their super powers by accident, and maybe you just don't want that happening to you! So stay away from radioactive badgers, be wary of neighbors disguised as the state of Idaho, and never let your robot duplicate have a night alone with your wife.
