This mama loves "Monster Mama Loves You So"
It's been a while since I've come across a book that mychildren ask for every night. And for once I haven't tired of thestory. Even my 8-year-old begs for me to read it to him. Amazing, endearing illustrations. I've never seen such love in a monster's eyes--all three of them. I just want to be THAT mama who loves her little monster that much. It's a gentle nudge to remember what's important. Your kids know it, you know it. My boys go to sleep with the biggest hugs, knowing that their monster mama loves them too.

Addicted
My oldest son, age 2 is simply amazed by this book. We try to find hidden things throughout the book, which is attributed to this marvelous job of illustration. It has vivid colors and allows me to teach my son about different insects, reptiles, etc.. He especially loves the clever use of words such as "beastball" that create a fun reading session for the two of us. The author has a good use of rhyme and creates an atmosphere of warmth and love in the family as the theme is about the love a mother has for her child. I would recommend this book to anyone as my son is addicted, wanting me to read it to him constantly.

MONSTERS DON'T HAVE TO BE SCARY ANYMORE! THEY CAN BE FUNNY!
It's about time! I'm so glad there are books out there like this to help children see that monsters don't have to be scary! (Now parents all over the world can sleep better knowing their child won't wake them up at 2:00 am saying "there's a monster in the closet; I'm scared!" Well hey, one less thing!)

Bravo to Laura Leuck and Mark Buehner! The story and the illustrations are both hiliariously entertaining! Plus I think it helps kids relate to the fact that there are lots of different and yes even unusual types of people and families but hopefully they all love each other the way THE MONSTER MAMA loves her little monster! Also it reminds me as a parent that spending QUALITY TIME with my child is what lets her know I love her! It is truly all the countless "little things" you do for your child that add up. So go bake some cookies (but hold the bugs please!)

I highly recommend this book for adults as well as children! You'll both enjoy MY MONSTER MAMA LOVES ME SO, I guarantee it. Childrens' books have come a long way since I was a child! Adults can get a laugh and moral out of them too! After all, that is what books are for--to entertain and to teach.

If you love your pet...
If you love your pet, you'll love this book. The stories capture how important pets are in our lives. My whole family has read it. I'm writing stories about my own pet with the help of a journaling book, THE BOOK OF MY PET. It's helping me capture my endearing animal's life in the way the Chicken Soup authors did.

Love, Laugh and Hug Your Pet

This book is a must-read; it's as simple as that.
I have never reviewed a book in my life, but I must tell you this book is terrific. I have so many books on Active Directory it's ridiculous. I even have all the Microsoft Windows 2000 whitepapers spiral bound. After having read all the aforementioned tomes, I was amazed how much I learned about profiles, group policies, and administrative templates from this book. You can tell Moskowitz has been in the trenches. No diatribes. No lofty digressions. No propeller head mumbo-jumbo. Just good, solid, useful information. Write more books, Jeremy. We need 'em.

This is what you're looking for!
I am a Microsoft Certified Trainer and has been working more or less day and night for three years - in labs, in theory, in real-world and in class - with Windows 2000, Active Directory and Group Policy. Earlier this year I invested in a few books concerning these subjects, and was once more thoroughly disappointed. Every one seems to be meant for beginners, and/or for the publishing business: thick, promising books with nothing in them. Said to my collegue: "Perhaps one knows so much nowadays, that you really can't find anything new in books (as opposed to Internet, real-world, lab)," and I actually decided, somewhat bitterly, not to waste any more money on "computer related" literature.

But then I read Moskowitz' "Windows 2000 Group Policy, Profiles, and IntelliMirror" (2001), and is what I hope for every time; here's a writer who's obviously passionate about the subject, who with great theoretical and practical knowledge been working hard to share his knowledge in a clear, no-nonsense fashion.
As you know, these kind of books usually have a common problem: they all tell you the same basics, throw in some pseudo-advanced details, and - most importantly - avoid the tough nuts. What's so liberating with Moskowitz' work, is that he indeed tells you the basics, just to make sure you follow him, then he goes one step further, along the way he throws in some real nuggets for technicians, and cracks them nuts one after another, like it's never been a problem at all. No-nonsense, easy read, nearly fascinating from the first page to the last. I'm very impressed. This book is extremely useful, a real treasure. If you're at Amazon searching for a book about these matters, you've certainly found what you're looking for.

I myself, will keep my eyes open for further works by Jeremy Moskowitz. Aside of being very experienced and knowledgable, he's also a skilled writer, free from that nudge-nudge-humor which some writers grasp at to make their thick nonsense "easy read"; but still he is easy read, has a laid back dry sense of humor, and writes fluidently. I don't think he's written any other books, though he's been writing for magazines, but I will keep my eyes open. This is truly great work! Perhaps the best in a long time.

A lucid, useful guide to making Windows 2000 work for you
Spending time with this easy-to-read book will help you set up your Windows 2000 network. If you've set up a Windows network or rolled out any desktops between 1901 and 2000, then you know the experience of touching each machine to get the operating system and programs installed. It doesn't have to be that way anymore.

Although Microsoft has provided the tools we need to deploy workstations quickly and easily, it takes training, months of experimentation, or a well-written guide to take advantage of what's in the operating system. You can read it on the train.

Some suggestions: if you're planning on upgrading your network to Windows 2000, do the servers first. That way you'll be able to use RIS and Intellimirror to quickly crank out the workstations.

Also, I found that if you have split your DHCP scope over multiple servers, and one of those DHCP servers is also your RIS server, your RIS-created computers will not want to use any other DHCP server.

This book was a great investment, and I'm very proud of how easy it is to administer my network since I implemented the author's plan for using Group Policy and Intellimirror.

Accurate, clear and comprehensive immunological knowledge
Janeway's Immunobiology is probably the best immunology book that someone really interested in immunology should take to the mythical desert island. One can enjoy it by its clarity from the basic graduate courses, and then keep reading it when doing research and pursuing hypothesis on the most advanced immunological topics. Many times I have found better organized and complete information on this book (even the old editions!) than on the latest reviews on specialized journals. The intense and careful work displayed to promote the real understanding on the concepts and the relations between immune components is impressive. Even more, the success in explanation is such that the authour takes the risk to have his book neglected as "too easy" by first time readers. However, immunology researchers in contact with the often chaotic and contradictory immunological literature can really appreciate the incredible amount of critical work invested and the intellectual gift of the author (authors) to abstract complex immune phenomena into nicely designed and biologically precise "cartoons". The focus on the evolutionary and functional consequences/origins of the immune mechanisms and structures makes Janeway's book one of the most refreshing and valuable voices in a sometimes too-technically oriented discipline. An impressive accomplishment never praised enough.

A fantastic book!
I really recommend this as an essential book for anyone studying immunology
in detail.- Its also a very useful reference for anyone studying medicine and wanting to
go into more depth.
.
Immunology at the best of times can be a difficult subject to grasp, both in terms of concepts
and details. Thank heavens for Janeway and Travers 5e which explains this challenging subject
in a simple way, without compromising on accuracy. What brings this book apart from the field is
its emphasis on fundamental principles: It defines these at the beginning of each chapter before delving into detail later on. Another great feature of its organisation is they way it draws parallels and connections between different aspects of the subject, helping the reader to gain an integrated and wider understanding of the subject. For example consider the unique way in which it compares and contrasts B and T cell development and functioning.

Information is also very accessible, since there are small subheadings for each topic, combined with
a very useful cross-referencing, though index and glossary. Plus its packed to the brim with useful colour diagrams which help to reinforce and add to points made in the text. Since it is written by recognised experts in the field, information is up to date and accurate, and it clearly differentiates between accepted 'facts' and theories.

In summary; after leaving many lectures bemused, bored and confused it's comforting to know that I can always turn to this book for guidance.

Undergrad, or grad wanting the basics--this is the book !!
I cannot say enough good things about this book. I'm a graduate student in Microbiology and Immunology, but my undergraduate major was in biochemistry. Having had NO immunology classes before, I felt myself beginning to drown in my first graduate immunology class... I knew I needed help (there was no textbook for this lecture-only class), and went searching. This is the book I eventually bought.

It saved me, big time! In plain language, and with easy-to-follow pictures throughout, this book literally taught me all about immunology--it is the reason I passed my classes; NOT sitting stunned in some lecture hall listening to some guy drone. It took some work, and I had to read the book almost front-to-back, but it is a WONDERFUL text.

This book is not really a graduate caliber text, however. For specific and more technical aspects, books like the one by Paul are going to be the ticket. But even now, when looking to brush up on my basics, design pictures for a lecture, etc. I refer back to this book first. Only 3 years old, my copy is dog-eared, worn, and well-used. I often end up with classmates and professors asking to use it, too.

If you find yourself desperate and failing in an immunology class, BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT. If you are taking any immunology text, and your prof has chosen a really cruddy book you are having difficulty understanding, do the same. If you're a professor trying to teach an immunology class, USE THIS BOOK. Make life a whole lot easier on your students--and you, when grading and evaluations time comes around!

This is one of the best fantasy series ever written
After reading the other reviews on this website, I am glad to learn that I am not the only reader who was eagerly anticipating a sequel to this series. I finished the first two books in a few hours and have been searching for the third one for years. Unfortunately, it is not available as it seems the author only wrote two books. Rarely have I read such engrossing battle scenes in a fantasy novel. Mr. Perry is adept at providing vivid and, at times gory, depictions of battlefield action. This is matched by his ability to create fantastic characters complete with human flaws and shortcomings (even the Gods in the story). The conflict within the Morigu; the nobility of Dammuth, the Dwarves, and Elves; the duplicity of Fealoth and Arianrood; and the might of the Demon Lords and Apkieran (who is wicked!) make for an amazing story. I would rank this up with the best of Feist and Eddings, despite the obscurity of the author. I only hope that all the raves and support on this website may somehow reach the author or publisher and convince him/them to finish the series.

Morigu: The Dead
I have read many fantasy series (Sword of Truth, Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time...etc) and this series defintely holds its own with those series. Although both books are short in pages compare to the other series, his character development is complex and indepth. The story flows very smoothly and it does capture you to the point that you cannot stop reading.

Unfortunately, I have been awaiting for nearly 8 years for him to finish this series. I do not know if he is dead or not willing to write, but if you are reading this Mr. Perry, please finish the series! If not Mr. Perry, somebody finish this series! It is extremely frustrating, enjoying something but not able to have closure!

morigu author alive and well in Hollywood!
Mark C Perry, despite reports to the contrary, is alive and well, having changed his name to Mark Leahy. He heard about our reviews and commentary and posted a reply at http://www.writerpunk.com/novels.html. The long and short of it is he is considering writing and publishing the remainder of the series (he is guessing 2 books) but asks us to keep saying nice things about him and his books to spur him along. All of I've got to say is HOORAY! I have loved his books from the opening pages and look forward to him writing and completing the series. I believe the Mark Perry who wrote to this page has info on a publisher interested in the book, please get that to Mr. Leahy if at all possible.

--An epistolary novel--
ELLA MINNOW PEA is the masterpiece of a very creative mind. I approached this story thinking that perhaps the book was meant mostly for English majors or those individuals who just love words. I was right and also wrong. This is a very clever story filled with interesting word play that everyone can enjoy. It's also an imaginative fable that is told in the form of letters that are written in lovely prose.

The story takes place on the fictional island of Nollop that was named after Nevin Nollop, the author of a very famous pangram sentence. Mr. Nollop is revered by the islanders and most especially by the officials who are members of the town council. On the island there's a monument to honor Mr. Nollop and beneath it the famous pangram is printed. THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPS OVER THE LAZY DOG. One day the letter Z falls of the word LAZY and as time passes more letters continue to fall from the monument. The council members decide that the voice of Nevin Nollop is speaking to them from the grave and telling them to discontinue the usage of the fallen letters. Severe penalties are issued to the islanders if they use any of the forbidden letters in dialog or in print.

Most of the residents think that taking letters out of the alphabet is ridiculous, but since the penalties are harsh; they try to obey the new laws. As time passes, the people become desperate and begin to look for a way out of the miserable repression that had become their lives.

This book was very entertaining and it was also amusing to see the various words that people would come up with in their messages to one another. For instance, when many of the letters that would be used to spell chicken were forbidden, a man wrote a note to his friend thanking her for "the thermos of pullet soup" that she had sent to him.

Vivacious and delightful
'Ella Minnow Pea' is a delightfully diverting novel filled with wit and imagination. Its lovingly crafted structure is a real breath of fresh air -- one would be hard pressed to find another book like it out there. One must admire Mark Dunn not only for his lively imagination but for his awe-inspiring power over words. It is fun to see how he manages to continue telling his story while avoiding use of a growing number of letters in the alphabet. Never once does his prose sound forced or simple, even after he must resort to using his remaining letters to phonetically sound out his words. The plot (citizens on an island off the coast of the US rebel after their government begins restricting their use of the alphabet) could have easily been silly, cliched and like a poor man's 'Animal Farm' but instead forges out its own solid identity and endears itself to the reader through its inventiveness and wit. One can't help but enjoy 'Ella Minnow Pea'. I read it in one afternoon and my only complaint is that it had to end.

A fun, alphabetic frolic
This epistolary novel is probably not for everyone. But if you enjoy sophisticated language and language manipulation (read: English majors), this is a wonderfully creative book.

Dunn creates an idyllic island nation, Nollopton (formerly Utopiana), that quickly descends to a military state reminiscent of Orwell's 1984, with neighbor turning in neighbor and students reporting teachers when letters from that famous panagram, "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog," start falling off the statue to honor the sentence and the man who created it, Nevin Nollop. The High Council, politicians elected for life, take this as a sign from Nollop himself, disregarding the fact that the glue that holds the letters on is over 100 years old.

And so, the people of Nollop, who because of inconsistent phone service are a letter-writing people, must, one by one, eliminate letters from their lives or face serious punishment, including banishment for the third offense. The letters become truly hilarious as more of the alphabet disappears--just imagine a world with no "D"! Dunn manages, despite all of this alphabetical mayhem, to build in love interests for the two young cousins who most consistently write to one another. A completely enjoyable afternoon read that I think has found a place as one of my favorite books.

A Horrifying Look at Law and Lynching in America
Mark Curriden and Leroy Phillips, Jr. in Contempt of Court look at the case of Ed Johnson, a black man given a stay of exection by Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan after he was tried and convicted for rape in a misguided and injudicial trial. The Supreme Court was ignored and the poor man was lynched which provoked the Supreme Court to the unusual action of becoming involved. This is a well written and exciting telling of the events and will carry the reader along on a wave of outrage. It is sure to be turned into an exciting film. It does not, unfortunately, tell the whole story of lynching, nor is to trying to. This one action by the Supreme Court belies the inactivity of the court and the justice system to stem the tide of lynching and racial injustice. But that story is told in other books and the reader will find this particular book a fascinating footnote on legal and racial history in America, both good and bad.

A Turn of the century lynching and the Supreme Court acts.
I have read a pre-published transcript of this book, and it is an exciting incite into a fasinating event in the history of our country.l suspect like most people, including professional historians,Ihad never heard of these events.I predict a movie will be made of this book. Two African American lawyers in 1906 in a small southern town struggle desperately and with great courge to save the life of a poor illerate Negro acused and convicted of raping a white woman. He is sentenced to death by a bigoted all white jury .At the risk of their lives, the lawyers seek relief in a federal court ,and when it is denied ,they have the intestinal fortitude to seek an appeal to the U S Supreme Court in Washington and 1906 this was a world away.To the astonishment of everyone old Justice John Marshall Harlan grants the appeal and orders a stay of his execution. This''interference'' by the highist court in the land infuriates the local white supremists, and with the acquiesence of the sheriff who is up for reelection,a mob breaks into the jail and succeeds in lynching the poor Black man.On his toomb stone is chiseled his last words to the vicious mob; ''God BLESS YOU ALL.I AM AN INNOCENT MAN.When the Supreme Court reads about the lynching in the Washington Post the next day, they are furious. The Justices persuade President T Roosevelt to send the secret service in Chattanooga Tenn.the small southern town involved.Eventually, and for the first and only time in the history of the U S Supreme Court, the Justices try the sheriff his deputies and members of the mob .I will let you read about what happens in the historical and unprecedented trial. It is worth reading by history experts and by anyone interested in excellent material This one is headed for rewards.

Breathing Life Into Legal History
Contempt of Court presents a history of a long-ago legal proceeding, an important one now nearly forgotten. Curriden and Phillips keep it engaging from start to finish. They've done a wonderful job of recreating the passions and pressures of a southern city in the Jim Crow era. Readers get more than an understanding of the law. They get to know the people who participated in a landmark case -- from Noah Parden, a black lawyer who battled overwhelming odds to take a poor man's case to the Supreme Court, to Sheriff Joseph Schipp, who let a lynch mob subvert the rule of law. The book offers many well-drawn scenes, such as the crime against Nevada Taylor, Parden's audience with Justice John Marshall Harlan and the lynching itself. All are sketched in great detail. And there's the jail-house prayer service the African-American community held for Ed Johnson, an innocent man, who facing death, found dignity and faith in God. Contempt of Court proves that American law isn't only about legal arguments. It's also abou living, breathing human beings, with their capacities for heroism and evil.

This Book Has it All
Blast Off! does what other collector's books only pretend to do. Collector books usually center around value guides, and pass themselves off as glorified shopping lists for toy shows and antique malls. Other books forego any knowledge of the subject whatsoever, and go with photographic essays of the nostalgia craze. A third sort of book tells long stories about growing up in some bygone era. All three sorts of books have, understandably a small readership and limited popular appeal.

The authors of Blast Off!, on the other hand, did the hard work of writing a real book, somehow combining it with the best photos and graphics I've seen in a collector's book, and sprinkling in enough anecdotes and oral histories to keep it interesting. This book is a major effort from an accomplished team: a knowledgeable collector, a lively writer, and an avid fan and history buff--the last being Mike Richardson, publisher of Dark Horse comics and owner of the Things from Another World sci-fi comic shops.

Blast Off! launches itself as an overview/ intro to the golden age of space toys, but its appeal is really wider than that. This is a book collectors will want, not simply to locate market values for haggling at the junk shop, but to remind them what they like about their hobby. Beautiful and imaginative graphics evoke the promise and wonder of the space age, but the book is so lively and informative I had to read it twice: once to read the captions and look at the pictures, and again just enjoying the text.

It's impossible to overstate how great this book is. The photographs are incredibly clear and bright, and the subject matter is drawn from endlessly rich collections. Books like this tend to fall through the cracks--not really appealing to the general reader, and yet not in-depth enough for the collector. But a reader from the first category who casually glances at this book may find a new interest, and seasoned collectors may find rarities they didn't know existed. Every era has volumes that define it; for the space age, that would be Blast Off!

BLAST OFF! by S. Mark Young

OFF! gives you more color photos of incredible space toys than you have ever seen at one time and in one place.

buy back one or two of these toys at a swap meet or toy show.
Going one step further, we now start buying books, magazines, or auction catalogues featuring space toys. All
these serve as our mental guide to what's "out there".
Initially, this method succeeds; eventually, however, it fails because the photos we've assembled are in black and
white while our memory of these toys is in true, living color.
Enter S. Mark Young with his book, BLAST OFF! Any space toy you ever had or read about, along with others you've never seen before, is photographed here in color so real that you can almost reach into the page and take out whatever wind-up rocket, disintegrator pistol, or bubble helmet your heart desires.
And, for those fans starved for information, wait until you read the chapter on Archer Plastics! Did you know that
the first Archer space playset and the first Marx space playset debuted at the same time? The year was 1952.
So, don't wait, don't hesitate, order your copy now. Be the first kid on your block to own a copy of S. Mark
Young's BLAST OFF!

Blast off a fantasy come true
BLAST OFF is not only a beautiful book to behold it is researched by and with the help of fans who love the space toys of the 30's, 40's and 50's. The team at Dark Horse has given space toy fans a bookmark in the history of childhood toys.

BLAST OFF includes photos and information on toys inspired from the space heroes of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon to the Space Opera heroes of Space Patrol, Tom Corbett, Rocky Jones and other role models of the 1950's. There are chapters on the English toys and the robots from Japan along with well-researched sections and chapters on the makers of the space toys of our childhood, Archer, Marx and Pyro. Many of the toys displayed in this book are rare and hard to find items that have not been seen before now.

However, the backbone of the book is the interviews with collectors and fans of space toys. Why we remember and kept these playthings of our childhood is as interesting as the fantastic photos and ads that are generously spread throughout the book.

I found that I would move back and forth between chapters, reading about the toys that I remembered but had not seen in many years. It brought back many good memories along with information and research that should be saved and shared with future generations.

A must have book for any science fiction or space toy collector. Thank you Dark Horse Books and the creative team of Mark, Steve and Mike for bringing us this fantastic slice of childhood back to life. I hope BLAST OFF stays in print for many years to come as a reference point in the history of not just toys but SPACE TOYS!!!!

Wonderful book - really helped in the grieving process
I discovered this book after my 3rd miscarriage, and I am incredibly grateful for it. It has helped me to begin work through my grief. It was so reassuring to realize that many other women have had similar feelings, and that my feelings are normal and healthy.

After reading this book, I decided that rather than getting rid of any 'mementos' from my pregnancies (such as ultrasound pictures and journal entries), I wanted to gather them to together and keep them as a concrete reminder of my babies' brief lives. I also decided to name each of my children. I found that acknowledging and honoring their lives has not caused me to dwell more on the losses, but to be able to grieve for them, which I believe is really the first step to 'recovering' from the loss. Obviously I will never 'recover', but the sadness does decrease over time.

I would recommend this book to any woman who has had a miscarriage, whether recently or years ago. If any of my friends are unfortunate enough to suffer a miscarriage in the future I think that I would bring them this book and a large box of tissues (and maybe a heating pad and something for the cramps too :-) ! )

I also wish that this book was required reading for every OB (or any medical professionals who deals with pregnant women). I was lucky enough to have a wonderful midwife, but I have heard horror stories about treatment from many other women. I think that this book would give them a better perspective on miscarriage from a woman's point of view.

I was also glad to see that this book was not overly religious. So many of the books on miscarriage are incredibly "Christian" - many bible quotes etc. There is a wonderful chapter at the end of the book that definitely deals with spirituality and religion that I appreciated, but it was not the main focus of the book.

I felt so validated by this book
I read this book shortly after I miscarried my first baby (and first pregancy) at 12 weeks. I was a little surprised when a good friend sent it to me because it seemed like too much too soon. But in actuality this was the ideal book for me to read immediately following the miscarriage. It helped me to begin my grieving process and it validated every emotion I was experiencing. I highly recommend this book to women (and men) who have experienced a miscarriage prior to the 20th week of pregnancy. The narratives spoke to me and the author's words helped me begin to work through the pain, fear, anger, guilt and confusion. I cannot give this a higher recommendation.

A wonderful source of support and understanding
I don't know if I would ever have described a book as supportive before reading this. A friend of mine (who lost a pregancy in week 16) sent this to me right after I lost my baby. It really helped me during my grieving process, which lasted about 5-6 months. By reading this book, I realized that I was not alone, nor was I crazy or overreacting to what was a devastating loss for me. I read it, cried, scribbled notes in the margins, and grieved (and grieved and grieved). It felt like a support group in a book!

The book was also useful in helping my husband understand what it was I was going through. I was too angry, sad and exhausted to be able to explain myself to him and it helped me to be able to simply underline passages and have him read them.

It's important to note that this book deals almost exclusivley with the emotional side of miscarriage. It does not attempt to explain the physical components of loss. It is for that reason that I think it is so valuable. After all, most of us are fine physically after losing a pregnancy. It's the emotional scars that take so long to heal.

Sadly, I have bought four more copies of this to give to friends of mine who have also suffered miscarriages. While I am grateful that this resource exists, I wish so much that none of us needed it.

Best Vegan cookbook Ive yet to find
This has to be the best Vegan cookbook ever written, Its simple, easy to read and most of the recipes are good old down home comfort foods that I would enjoy cooking for my family daily yet some of the dishes are creative and artfull not to mention delicious to serve to some of my most sophisticated guests.
I have a 10 year old who has tried cooking a few things from Veggie Works Vegan cookbook which she found simple enough to follow.
Once again, for the average person seeking to eat a more healfull diet but not quite sure how to go about preparing a vegan meal, this book is the best Ive yet to find!

Veggie Works is one of my favorite vegetarian restaurant. In the book, Mark shares his secrets to make even the most novice cook appear professional...My meat-eating family and friends love the recipes, especially the vegan meatloaf...A must-have cookbook for anyone who loves delicious foods.

Veggie Works for Me
Mark Rasmussen, author of the Veggie Works Vegan Cookbook, is the chef at Veggie Works Restaurant in the New Jersey shore town of Belmar. For seven years, he has been offering 150 vegan menu choices daily to not-necessarily-vegetarian customers who keep coming back for more. If the test of fool-proof vegan cuisine is whether it can pass the "omni" test, then the recipes in Veggie Works make the grade. The recipes in this cookbook are as easy to follow for a novice cook, as a painting-by-numbers kit would be for a novice painter. Once you get the formulas down, you can mix and match to create new recipes. In fact, there are forty pages in the back of the book for you to create your own "homespun recipes" for future generations to follow. Other uniques aspects of the book include a section on homemade baby food, a 54-page glossary, an Herb/Spice Table, an Herb and Spice Application Chart, a vegan food pyramid, and a Hot Pepper Chart to indicate which peppers produce the least-to-most heat. Rasmussen offers a week of meals, and a holiday and theme menu, from traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas themes, to the more exotic and adventuresome Himalayan Rim Dinner, South Pacific Feast, Cinco De Mayo, Roman Feast, and Nordic Smorgasbord, to name a few. Recipes for all of these menus are found in the book. Three hundred and fifteen more pages are devoted to recipes. The chapter on vegan meats alone is worth the price of the book. It includes step by step instructions for soy-based meats, such as tofu, tempeh, and TVP, including mouth-watering recipes for tofu crabcakes, TVP meatloaf, sausage, and Swedish Meatballs; and a basic recipe for making seitan, which is a Japanese dish using cooked wheat gluten to simulate meat. Seitan recipes include Perfect Gluten Flank Steak, New York Gluten Strip, Southern Fried Gluten Cutlet, Chicken Fried Gluten Cutlet, and Gluten Roulade which is sure to impress your company, be they omni or veg. The desserts section is far from ordinary: Banana Flambe, Bavarian Cream Pie, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheesecake, Coconut Cream Pie, Key Lime Pie, Triple Chocolate Cake, Whipped Cream, doughnuts, and cookies makes the choice difficult. If you find yourself wanting to bridge the gap between "mixed company," Veggie Works is your answer.
