Chikatilo:
I was absolutly spell-bound by this book.Very well written. This book however is not for amatuer readers.Delves deeply into the whys and hows of this wickedly sick individual.Definatly not a bed time story.5 plus stars.

The best book on a serial killer I have ever read.
This book is not for the timid. However, if you truely want to get into the mind of a serial killer, this is the book for you. Of all the books I have read on the subject, this offered the most insight into the mind of the actual killer. From the moment I picked it up, I could not put it down.

Good textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate course
I read the book and is almost self contained. No knowledge in Number Theory is assumed. Has a great combination of text and math. Last few chapters could have been better.

Assistant Researcher
An excellent book. I am a beginning cryptographer with some statistics, discrete math, user level crypto and programming under my belt - crossing over from another field. This book is an excellent read with proper amounts of examples and theorems. It is easy to follow and would make a good reference.

Tal's Rise
A great book - I really liked it. These books publsihed by Hardinge and Simpole on how the great chess players Tal, Botvinnik etc. rose to take the chess crown, are wonderful for understanding the various tactics of the masters of chess. What makes it more interesting is the preface and foreword which provide great background info., bringing the games to life.

chess magician
this book covers mikhail tals career up to the match in 1960 against botvinnik when he became world champion. there are wins in it against botvinnik smyslov fischer and keres-the notes are very full and read really well-the author has carefully researched russian sources and if tal misses a trick clarke spots it. the games- being tals- are mainly very brilliant-he was the supreme magician of the chess board and liable to crush even the greatest of opponents with his amazing tactics. the print is very clear and the diagrams are well chosen -in fact this is one of the books i wd definitely take with me on a desert island.

MARVELOUS NOBEL POET'S TRIBUTE TO CHRIST'S BIRTH
Joseph Brodsky leaves his final legacy with these poems in tribute to Jesus Christ and the Grand Miracle of Incarnation of
God into Man. Several striking features make this a must-have volume for poetry lovers and those interested in the literature
of contemporary Nobel Laureates:

1)The original Russian/Cyrillic Alphabet version of each poem is included with the translation on the facing page

2)Most of the translations are by the author, retaining the spirit as well as the letter of the original poem

3)The remaining translations are outstandingly faithful to the original, by consummate craftsmen in their own right: Richard
Wilbur,Anthony Hecht,Seamus Heaney,Derek Walcott,Glyn Maxwell

4)All poems are focussed on one central event: the supernatural
miraculous birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God as a cause for worldwide celebration. Brodsky takes great care not to digress
into personal analysis,self-introspection, or theological interpretation, but lets the impressions of the Incarnation on the world around him be the theme of his poems

5)A special bonus at the end of the book is a candid interview with Brodsky shortly before his death in 1997 which probes his religious faith (non-evangelical,uncertain 'quasi-Calvinist'), the difference between Russian Christianity and Russian Orthodoxy,
Christmas vs. Easter in terms of commemoration, reflections on various of his Nativity poems and insights into the mind of the world-renowned Nobelist(e.g. significance of the world's calendar being B.C.-Before Christ and A.D. -Anno Domini, even after 2 millennia).

Special highlights are the translations by Wilbur and Hecht.
Makes a great gift all year-round.

Timeless
A remarkable collection of poems by Joseph Brodsky -- about "Time, eternity, and Love -- which span the life's work of a great poet."

Perhaps it was the time of year in which I read Brodsky's collection of poems (December 2001), with the years great tragedies, and the feeling of helplessness that many people may now share. Whatever may have drawn me to this book, it is a book that I will forever remember.

The poems are translated with great care so as not to lose the beauty of the original work of art. Brodsky has given the reader a genuine gift of the eternal truths of Christmas. His poem entitled "January 1, 1965" is sure to be a favorite for generations to come.

If you enjoy poetry of metaphysical reflection and individual consciousness, you will enjoy reading "Nativity Poems." Definitely a book for the poetry lover on your gift list.

Statism and anarchy

Inspiring
You who are viewing this page should congratulate yourself for being willing enough to explore what Anarchism is all about. I commend you once again but reward yourself by obtaining this book. Any of Bakunin's writings are well worth it, it is a travesty that Anarchism has been dismissed awaken yourself to the possiblity and don't be afraid to ask why not.

Elegant writing on an often misunderstood subject
Michael Bakunin was born landed Russian nobility but he gave all that up to fight for a more just social order. This book is a fascinating read for any student of Politcal Science or Sociology. As Marx's arch rival at the International Working Man's Association Bakunin believed that revolution would come from the rabble of society not the well organized industrual workers as Marx beleived. This book takes you to exile in Siberia to the politically charged streets of Paris. One of the best books I have ever read.

Botvinnik-Petrosian; Tactics Vs Strategy
Soviet Chess expert Bob Wade collects and annotates the tough games of the Botvinnik-Petrosian 1963 World Championship. In this volume, the exciting tension between the aggressor Botvinnik and the patient and persitent Petrosian is clear throughout. Wade examines the games to expert level, providing a clear understanding of how Petrosian took the world title from a supposedly unbeatable champion. A fundamental work and a Hardinge and Simpole chess classic.

tigran petrosian wins the world chess championship
petrosian beat botvinnik in moscow 1963 to become the 9th world chess champion. in this book international master bob wade annotates every game with great care and also takes into account the best soviet sources of information.for lovers of endings this book is a must-the fifth game -won by petrosian - is probably the most subtle endgame ever played in a world chess championship. i also very much liked the inclusion of training games played by botvinnik which otherwise might have been lost to chess history!

A Truly Great Book
I purchased this book recently at a local used book store, just a few blocks away from the University of Chicago campus: Thus, it can be found though it may take some effort. Nonetheless, if you manage to find it, you will think your toil well rewarded, for this is an excellent book---one of the great Botvinnik's last works. It features good analysis of some of the most well know and studied games in the history of chess---for example, Polugaevsky Karpov, 2nd match game and Karpov Spassky 8th and llth match games. The author and interesting subject matter make this a worthwhile read.
