First Year Polish
This was a very useful book for learning Polish. I lived in Poland for a year and a half. This book was one of the things that helped me become fairly fluent in this hard language. I also reccomend the the Intermidiate Polish by Swan.

Highly recommended
I worked through this book from cover to cover before a trip to Poland several years ago. The vocabulary is colloquial and current. The book turned out to be an excellent preparation for my trip. I found that I could make myself understood in most everyday situations.

I found First Year Polish to be so useful, that I bought Intermediate Polish...also and excellent book.

I have reread this book 3 times
I first read Five Families when I was a 23yo public health nurse from the Midwest, working in a Mexican-American barrio in East Los Angeles. A co-worker advised me to read this book in order to better understand the families I found myself working with.
I devoured it.
Then I came to realize that it's a seminal work in modern cultural anthropology, a book that will surely stand the test of time, a 'study' written in a style that makes it accessible to all readers.
Five Families is a dramatic and forceful account five poor Mexican families. It's a book that will leave you changed.

Excellent account of differences in Poverty
I just read this book, as I have read his other works. Oscar Lewis gives an extensive complete examination into the lives of extreme poverty. He gives exacting detail of the homes, lifestyles, and characteristics of the poor in Mexico. The last chapter delves with the poor who have accomplished "some wealth" and their upbringing still manages to evolve the same as if they were still poor. Wonderful thorough book!

Medicine Man Does it Again
This collection of vignettes is timely, and as always with Dr. London, hysterically funny. You definitely don't have to be in the medical profession to find his anecdotes simply delicious antidotes to daily life. Readers will recognize characters and symptons they've either known or experienced themselves and get a good dose of the laughing cure along with the story. But what's best about Dr. London's humor is its humanity. It's clear that he cares about his patients even when they try his, well, patience. Plus, he is a delightfully clever writer. Best to read his books in a group for the full effect - each funnier than the next.

Simply wonderful, just like the author
As one of Dr. London's patients (that's not his real name), I feel honored every time I talk to him on the phone or have an appointment with him. But that's not what this review is about. It's about a tremendously smart, superbly funny and surprisingly insightful series of essays about doctor-patient relationships. Dr. London has his patients -- and readers -- pegged. Now that I've read this one, I'm getting the rest of his books.

A major source on genetic fuzzy systems
The volume brings an outstanding presentation of the major issues, ideas, concepts and algorithms to design and develop fuzzy systems using gentic algorithms. A field of major relevance for researchers and practioners, genetic fuzzy systems provides a major methodological substract of significant impact in practice. The book is unique in its contents and presentation. Chapters begin with the key concepts and smoothly grows to advanced concepts in a clear and very understandable and motivating way. The material mirrors the state of the art in the area of genetic fuzzy systems and contains the most recent results available until its publication. Written by renowned, internationally recognized researchers, the book is mandatory to all who are interested in the field of computational intelligence, its foundations and applications.

Summary of contents by the author
In recent years, a great number of publications have explored the use of genetic algorithms as a tool for designing fuzzy
systems. Genetic Fuzzy Systems explores and discusses this symbiosis of evolutionary computation and fuzzy logic. The book summarizes and analyzes the novel field of genetic fuzzy systems, paying special attention to genetic algorithms that adapt and learn
the knowledge base of a fuzzy-rule-based system. It introduces the general concepts, foundations and design principles of genetic fuzzy
systems and covers the topic of genetic tuning of fuzzy systems. It also introduces the three fundamental approaches to genetic learning
processes in fuzzy systems: the Michigan, Pittsburgh and Iterative-learning methods. Finally, it explores hybrid genetic fuzzy systems such as
genetic fuzzy clustering or genetic neuro-fuzzy systems and describes a number of applications from different areas. Genetic Fuzzy System represents a comprehensive treatise on the design of the fuzzy-rule-based systems using genetic algorithms, both from
a theoretical and a practical perspective. It is a valuable compendium for scientists and engineers concerned with research and applications in
the domain of fuzzy systems and genetic algorithms.

Fantastic
Loved this book. Great story, great graphics. A real winner!

An excellent book about the joys of giving!
The Giants Garden is an excellent book about the joys of giving. It is written so that every child can understand that it is better to give than to receive and when we shut people out, we often hurt ourselves in the process by shutting out love and happiness.

Timeless Tales of Great Worth
When I was quite small (I'm now 64) the 33 1/3 records were introduced. One of the first that we got was a recording of "The Happy Prince". It featured Bing Crosby. I listened to it over and over until I went off to college. Years later I was in England, and I discovered that there was a whole book of stories. Over the years I have re-read this book so much that it is now in tatters. Each story is a gem unto itself. Each story will become another jewel in your treasure chest of lenses, which help you to see the world more clearly. Now that I have discovered that this book is still in print, I expect to buy multiple copies to give as Christmas Gifts this year. Do yourself a favor and don't miss these delightful additions to your life. (Psst : I like this book !)

THE HAPPY PRINCE
THIS BOOK CONTAINS MANY STORIES BUT THE BEST IS THE HAPPY PRINCE.ILIKED IT BECAUSE IT'S OF A PRINCE WHO SACRIFICES EVERYTHING TO THE POOR PEOPLE. I THING EVERY CHILD SHOULD READ AND ENJOY THIS BOOK! THANKS

Review For "I didn't know there were Latinos in Wisconsin"
HI. I thought this book was a very imformative anthology of Latino heritage and culture. It showed how 30 hispanic writers could form a book that told how Latinos live their everyday lives. I especially like the poem about him and his four children, when they asked why they were named what they were named. I really like the personality of his second son, Sergio. Overall it was a very good book.

A superb introduction to international law
This book provides a well organised and carefully edited introduction to international law. Exerpts from relevant cases, international agreements and juristic writings are interwoven with insightful commentary and questions. Each topic is introduced and explained in the text. As an earlier reviewer noted, some aspects of the book are now outdated, and it is to be hoped that a revised edition will eventually be published. Also, the chapters on jurisdiction and immunity therefrom, concentrate, in large part though not entirely, on the legislation enacted in the United States, which may not be of interest to readers who reside elsewhere. I read this book while studying a basic course in international law, which covered the sources of international law, the law of treaties, the United Nations system, jurisdiction, immunity from jurisdiction, the use of force and state responsibility. I found that the level of detail presented in the book corresponded closely to that of the course itself. I also found the text to be an excellent starting point for research, although as I turned to more specific areas of international law it became necessary, as one would expect, to consult more specialized references. In conclusion, this book, though out of date in some respects, still provides an outstanding introduction to the subject which I would definitely recommend.

Delve deeper into international law
If Akerhurst's Modern Introduction to International Law can be said to be a quick overview for students beginning to study international law, Henkin's International Law is for those who already have some study behind them and are ready to delve more deeply into specific issues. At first the format of the book may seem confusing, for unlike introductory works like Akehurst in which the author writes the entire text in his own words, Henkin is filled with actual case judgements, tribunal decisions, articles of law, and the opionions of other journalists (although less so than Harris's International Law : Cases and Materials). At times, the actual text of the book seem little more than footnotes to the the above. However, unlike Akehurst, which tends to stick to one viewpoint, this vast amount of material enables Henkin to illuminate the areas of controversy in international law and helps the reader to build his own opinions. One problem with this book, however, is that the third edition came out in 1993 and is therefore rather dated, especially in terms of international economic law. For instance, it fails to take into account the WTO and EU. However, the traditional areas of international law are well documented, and even the dated parts of the book still have relevance to the issues important today. This is definitely a book to have at hand when making a study of international law in general or dealing with a specific issue that involves international law.

James Madison and the Creation of the American Republic (Library of American Biography)

James Madison and the Creation of the American Republic
James Madison and the Creation of the American Republic 2nd Ed. written by Jack N. Rakove is more than a biography about James Madison our fourth President of the United States. Reading this book you get a real feeling for Madison and his philosophy.

As Madison firmly believed, his record as a statesman should be a record of public deeds, not gossipy tale of ambitions, achievements, disappointments and revelations. Madison took care in to preserve his political papers as well as to ensure that the details of his private life would remain forever hidden from posterity.

Thus, it was only in the conduct of public affairs that his deepest talents and interests found expression. Madison was a political thinker of his generation... in the task of creating the extended national republic of the United States, he had many partners but very few equals. Madison played a key roll in every significant development in national politics: efforts to ratify and amend the Articles of Confederation, the adoption and ratification of the Federal Constitution, the framing of he first amendments, the organization of the first opposition party, the initial controversies over constitutional interpretation, and the long diplomatic and military struggle that ended with the War of 1812.

Madison's distinctive contributions to the American constitutional tradition were first and foremost a reflection of his remarkable capacity to reason abstractly about funamental problems of political life on the basis of lessions drawn from experience. We see the author taking Madison and showing us how ideas that began with books were shaped and elaborated and reconsidered through the experience of revolutionary, republican, and constitutional politics.

James Madison does not resonate nearly as deeply in our historical memory. Yet his lasting achievements are arguably no less important. As Madison deepest legacy for the American constitutional tradition, he helped to create the understanding of these two distinct problems of majority power and minority rights.

This is an excellent book and it really gets into the conscience of Madison and it gives the reader some analysis of the potent legacy for the statesman named James Madison.

Excellent illustration of Madison and his philosphy
A must-read for any student of United States History. Rakove's writing seems as effortless as it is informative. I thought I knew James Madison after reading this book.
