The Soul and The Heart
I thought is story was a very interesting one. The story is very desciptive, and it makes you think. From the moment he captures his "love" to the part to part where the priest finally blesses the sea. The only thing that me wonder was about the author maybe he doubted needing a soul, or maybe he really thought that love wasn't worth giving up everything for. Once you read the story it'll be up to decide.

The Fisherman and his soul
I think the most attrative parts of this story is the descriptive paragraphs.

Oscar Wilde's Wild, Wild London
After reading Profundis, I was struck by Oscar, his life, times, regrets and the depth of his self-inflicted pain. This book provides the reader with a perspective on the London of Oscars' time which must be thoroughly understood to glean meaning to his life. Daily life is explored on various social levels as are those contemporary laws and social mores of which Oscar spoke and often debated. This book is a must for those who wish to OBJECTIVELY get beyond Oscar's sexuality and popularized personnae. A fantastic overview of the London which harbored the young Wilde -- rejected the sexual Wilde -- and ultimately embraced the visionary Wilde.

Shake's Alive!
"Othello" is one of my favorite Shakespearean plays, but even the best of things could use a little updating once in a while. That's why I was so excited when I found out about the comic book version. It is the play, the whole play, and nothing but the play, made easier for the layman to understand with interesting contemporary art.

Documentation of a Tradition
This is an impressive documentation of the annual Holy week pilgrimage to the santuario in the village of Chimayo in the foothills of the Sangre de Christo Mountains in northern New Mexico. The text provides illuminating insights into the history and tradition, both Indian nd Hispanic, of the shrine and the pilgrimage. The photographs, excellently reproduced, present a sensitive, inspired and inspirational, documentation of the people, the place and the journey. There are hikers nad bikers, children, old people, campfires, men bearing crosses, and on the back cover an image that points up the interface between modern life and ancient tradition. It shows a large, illuminated highway department sign that says: "PILGRAMS (sic) EXIT TO FRONTAGE." Quotations, some in Spanish, some in English, illustrate the variety of stories and motivations behind these journeys. This is a magnificent chronicle of an important piece of New Mexico tradition.

De Profundis, Dorian Gray and more ...
This edition of Oscar Wilde's work - in addition to its inclusion of much personal correspondence - is a fascinating look at the author and, notably, his personal travails.

The novel, of course, and the plays are classics, but I found the letters to be a juicy narrative all their own. The twists and turns of his doomed affair with Lord Alfred Douglas, affectionately called "Bosie" in touching - and bitter - love notes from prison, are here to peruse. Reading them, you get a sense of Wilde's personal feelings at the time of his famed trial and arrest for sodomy, his anguish at losing Bosie and going to jail. It's fascinating, juicy stuff - made all the more touching by the fact that it all occurred without shame, in plain view, over 100 years ago.

Wilde's a great character, a great author, a good role model for gay life and a hysterical wit. And this book is a must.

Passions about Shakespeare in 19c London.
This little book is about Shakespeare's sonnets, but more than that it is a book about nineteenth-century young men and their obsession with Shakespeare. Two in particular become completely engaged by a particular literary interpretation--that Shakespeare wrote his beautiful sonnets not for a wealthy patron, but to his Rosalind, or rather to the actor who played all his lovely strong women--that is, to an adolescent boy. The book is a cautionary tale about heightened involvement in literary ideas. A literary idea can possess one as completely as opium, and can be just as dangerous

A beatiful and fascinating book for those who love R&H
I'm basing this review on the hardcover edition of this book.

This could have just been a coffee-table book with beautiful photos but a negligible text. Fortunately, someone had the excellent idea of asking Ethan Mordden to write the text.

The result is that a very informative, insightful, well-written text accompanies the beautiful photos.

If you love Rodgers and Hammerstein, you probably will get great pleasure from this book.

One tiny quibble, though: Mordden is wrong when he says that Hammerstein invented the lyric form used in "I Am Going to Like It Here."
