Oscar's Lady
I was anxious to ready Lady Windamere's Fan after I'd read Oscar Wilde's other more popular play, The Importance of Being Earnest. I'm not quite sure what I expected, but I was surprised at the content of Lady Windamere's Fan. Considering the lifestyle that Wilde indulged in, it was interesting to see his take on the confusions and lack of communication between a husband and wife. He introduced the subject of a possible affair and divorce, but sketched his main characters as honorable citizens who were willing to go against the "impulse of the moment" and instead, stay true and faithful to their spouses. The person of Lady Windamere is interesting and effective. She is one who many women would do well to emulate. She demonstrates great love and devotion to her husband and her child, and shows forth woman's indwelling feeling of responsibility for her offspring.

As always, Wilde gives us an interesting little "twist" at the end of the play, just to keep us on our toes and prove again that we aren't nearly as clever as he! Wilde proves himself again with Lady Windamere's Fan-- a job well done!

A fantastic peice of our history and an all around good read
He went by the nickname "Legs" A tall tough-minded teenager, He had done a man's work without pay untill he jumped a boxcar and fled from his home in Saskatchewan. In the following years he road the rails across the length and breadth of the continent and lived by his wits and brawn. This is a story of wanderlust in the great American "On the Road" tradition. Oscar Brooks draws on his memories of a time when young men with ambition, but little money, lived separate, allmost self-contained world. This world was inhabited by hobos, bindel stiffs, and jungle buzzards, By hoggers, Yard Bulls and gandy dancers. It was a harsh life, where steady jobs were hard to come by, especially for a kid with no family or home. Legs survived by doing any job. He husled pool, Panhandled, worked as a diswasher, labourer and farmhand. he was hels in an Ameican jail when caught crossing the border illeagally, and busted out. He made love to the wife of a traveling salesman, made war with belligerent drunks in a pool hall, and once, in a restaurant, watched as the waiter coolly shot a at with a .22 calibre pistol before serving customers. This is an exuberant account of a forgotten way of life.

excellent interpretation of Wilder's short story
This is a CBC dramatized interpretation of Wilde's short story. Taped in front of live audience, this is by far the best story- telling that has ever done to Wilde's work. Both music and sound effect are superb, and best of all, the narration and dialogues closely follow the original story. In this respect, CBC has outperformed BBC by a large degree.

Don't believe superficial certainties
Lord Saville one night listens to a chiromantist who tells him he has to commit a crime, whose victim is supposed to be a relative of some kind, before being able to marry his love. The tale is full of humor and shows how he fails, systematically, in his enterprise, because he believes the soothsayer. But the more humoristic the tale becomes, the more desperate Lord Saville grows. Till one night he kills the chiromantist. He has finally been able to rebel against the prediction and this rebellion proves the prediction is a fake. But a second dimension appears in the tale. The chiromantist had been introduced to Lord Saville by some woman who invites such oddities to her parties to amuse the audience. She behaves as if she believed in those ominous birds that she calls lions. And Lord Saville was naive enough to accept this prediction as true and unescapable because it had been introduced to him by this particular woman, in this particular situation. Men must not fall in the traps of social tricks that some women hire to give some life to their social evenings that would be very dull otherwise. Who is wiser? The woman who "animates" her social gatherings with such attractions? Or the man who falls in the trap of believing such predictions? The other tales of the collection are all just as funny by showing how some people are able to go beyond such appearances and reach another level of being that is some kind of game and it becomes a trap to the gullible ones.

A realistic portrayal of the life in "la vecindad"
I read this book as part of a college assingment many years ago; and I still keep all the characters in my heart.

It is a painful analysis of a family who faces poverty and all the uncertainty that comes with it. The loss of the mother and the lack of the father's affection for his children, makes for a story that was so painful at times; that I had to put it down and not deal with it for days at a time.

What makes it so great, it's the fact that is a true story and it leaves you with a sense of hope. Seeing how all the characters made it in the end, and still managed to love each other unconditionally. Read it only if you want to experience what is like to live in a vecindad in Mexico city; with all that comes with that!

This is more than a collection of masterful song lyrics, the long introductions by Stephen Sondheim and Oscar Hammerstein make it something of a treatise on lyric-writing by two of the art's greatest practitioners.

Also recommended: "Pentatonic Scales for the Jazz Rock Keyboardist" by Jeff Burns.

Great book on a little noted subject...
Marines and tanks? Who would ever write about this? This book is long overdue. Every book on the Pacific was mentions breifly the role Marine Tanks. This book covers that gap in grand style. I shows the development of Marine Armor, and its employemnt in some of the bloodiest battles of the war. This book on the Corps unsung heros, is faced paced and very easy to read. If you read other books about the USMC in the Pacific, read this very worthy book.

Perhaps the best exercise system there is
In this book, Ichazo presents an overview of the history of exercise as a social phenomenon and describes its relevancy to self-development, especially in the pursuit of enlightenment. The exercises of Psychocalisthenics -- a system he developed from his extensive martial arts, calisthenics and yoga experience -- are presented with clear and concise illustrations and descriptions. This 20 minute system exercises all the muscle groups under the control of your own breathing, thereby integrating mind, body and emotions. The exercises are performed in the order in which the body wakes up in the morning, producing a "flash" of energy throughout the psyche. Highly recommended.
