A Review of Three Forks
For his first novel, Tom Marlin has captured my interest. The story line is skillfully interwoven with glimpses into the history and culture of the DFW Texas area in the middle 19th century. Many real names and places are used in the story which make it seem almost like a documentary of the struggle for territory between the native Americans and the settlers. Two main characters emerge; Jake Chalk, a young rancher who finds himself involved in efforts to protect the settlers from Indian attacks and to capture the other main character, Black Wolf, a young Caddo chief who seems to be bent on continuing the hostilities. The more the story unfolded, the more I was drawn into it trying to anticipate what would be coming next. Would Melody and Jake eventually marry? Would Black Wolf recover his sacred obsidian knife? The ending was exciting and surprising enough to rate a five star for me. There are still some unanswered questions which may be sufficient material for a sequel which I hope is coming soon.

Very, Very Good
Initially, I thought this was a story about times preceding the settlement of Dallas but I found it to also be a saga of westward expansion in the US (the culmination of which was the destruction of Native American cultures during the 19th century).

I was delighted to read not only a good solid story, but see the characters evolve with real emotion and motivations. A fairly difficult task for accomplished writers, the author ups the ante with a historically based setting. What I liked is that these aren't the cardboard characters you find in so many well conceived but poorly executed pieces of historical fiction, where characters only exist to fulfill their 'historical significance' and are discarded to the annals of history.

Stories that take the time to weave a good tale are one thing but when the author follows it up with what appears to be very detailed research to base the story upon past events in real locations (in addition to showing the effects of the real issues of day to day life in the time period) you know you've got something special. This book is going to be one tough act to follow, but I trust the author welcomes and rises to the challenge.

I suspect I'll be let down by the fact that the author is incapable of crafting his tales as quickly as I can read them. If you're reading this Mr. Marlin: START ON ANOTHER BOOK NOW.

Wow!
Ok, so I grew up on the Lone Ranger and more of the stereotypical "good guys wear white hats" kind of western. I had written off the genre for the most part until I read some L'amour and thought I'd give this a shot as well. (Apparently there's a lot of really bad stuff out there and have been told I lucked out when I found L'amour.)

Keep in mind that my usual reading is stuff by Phillip K Dick, Bruce Sterling, and William Gibson, so you could definitely say I'm a fish out of water in regards to this genre.

Imagine my surprise when I saw not only a good solid story, but character development and...what's that? historically based. Stories that take the time to weave a good tale are one thing but when the author does the research to base the story upon past events in real locations AND deftly shows the affects of the real issues of day to day life in the time period....WOW.

I had never thought of "cowboys" like that before. It's my belief that if you like L'amour, you'll like Marlin.

Thanks for a great read, Mr. Marlin.

Tom Horn Blood on the Moon
An exceptional documentary dealing with one of Wyoming's most notorious citizens, one that reads like a novel. Although much has been written about Tom Horn, Chip Carlson has done an excellent job of presenting new facts and information furthing adding to the controversey over Horn's guilt in the murder of young Willie Nickell.

Portrait of a rogue
Chip Carlson has established himself as the most prolific and knowledgeable Tom Horn buff since Dean Krakel, and his work is extraordinarily readable. To understand a true American (choose your own term) outlaw, rogue, bounty hunter, lawman, Westerner ... whatever ... pick up Carlson's work, which is full of the grittiness that haunts the legend of Horn.

Tom Horn: Blood on the moon :Dark history of the murderou Ca
The best word I can think of to describe this book is FANTASTIC.Chip Carlson has written another masterpiece on the subject.
To me just about every chapter leaves you craving more information, and thats what a good book should do.His indepth research is amazing on how he has put it into a format for persons interested in this period of western history.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants more insight into the times trials and tribulations of 1890's Wyoming.

Profoundly Spiritual and Profoundly Practical
I want to give a copy of this book to everyone I know: I kept having that thought while I was reading the book and moreso now that I have finished it. Which means to me, that I should not give it to anyone but to apply the ideas contained in the book in my own life.
"True Work" is as important as anything that Joseph Campbell has written. It comes from Michael and Justine Tom's own life experience and contemplation of that experience.
The book shows how to integrate work into one's fabric of life, because work is one of life's threads, but it is not the whole cloth. Again, it is a profound work.

Not just another "how to" book
I found this book very insightful in a personal way. It has many real life stories and examples of people finding true meaning in what they do, as well as practical advice on how one can apply some of these lessons. Though it's not presented in a multi-step "follow these rules to success" manner, this book contains many pertinent insights on how we the reader can apply new points of view in our daily lives.

It's not about finding a job, it's about finding a life.
Other than finding true love, finding true work is just about the most important thing we can do to feel fulfilled. True Work helps you discover your passion, look for synchronicities along the way, and realize that the path to true work is a journey, not a destination.

"UNCHAINED EAGLE" IS AN EXCELLENT TEACHING BOOK
Tom Heneghan's "UNCHAINED EAGLE" is the first-rate teaching book on contemporary Germany that many of us have been looking for. It is an excellent summary of Germany since unification, well-informed and engagingly written. It is a combination of authoritative writing and accessibility.

An excellent summary of Germany's reunification decade.
In the years and decades ahead, scholars from various disciplines will be writing many heavyweight histories about the huge complexity of issues involved during Germany's reunification process in the last decade of the 20th Century. For those readers who don't want to wait, then Tom Heneghan's book is an outstanding short-cut toward grasping what a turbulent decade this turned out to be, with all the challenges and changes it demanded of German leaders and society as a whole. Heneghan is a first-rate observer. He is concise and accurate in giving the larger picture of the social, economic and political - both internal and foreign - issues during and after reunification. But he also has an eye for the small telling details about how average Germans, east and west, had to scramble to try to understand how their country - and its role in Europe and beyond - was so rapidly changing before their own eyes. One might not agree with every point in Mr. Heneghan's book, but I think that he was right on-target with the underlying theme: that modern Germany has fully grasped the lessons of its recent dark history - Hitler and the Holocaust, the communist dictatorship in the east, the Cold War division - to become, finally, a normal country. In the future, the academics and historians writing about Germany's reunification decade will most likely find themselves referring again and again to Mr. Heneghan's book for pointers.

The German Drama Hollywood Hasn't Yet Filmed
This is a riveting story about the dramatic happy ending to the 20th century in the European country that did most to shape it. Taking over as Reuters bureau chief for Germany in 1989, American reporter Tom Heneghan soon became an eye witness to the tearing down of the iron curtain and a well-connected chronicler of the fast paced events that are still shaping Europe and the West. With his eye for relevancy and concise reporting skills, Heneghan provides both scholars and the general public with a fascinating story and a shrewd analysis of Germany's ongoing struggle to find the right place for its past and a prosperous future in harmony with its neighbors. The biggest bump on the road to the future - reunification - rattled the country's snug position as Europe's economic growth engine in a caravan led by French and British political visions and a shotgun-riding US military. The author guides us through these developments with the familiarity of an insider and a balanced view honed through years of living and working in a variety of countries and cultures. He enlivens the story with behind-the-scenes anecdotes of the domestic and international schmoozing and scrapping that surrounded the changes he documents. Astute observations such as the tendency of German and Anglo/American post war baby boomers to draw different lessons from history (intolerance of war vs. intolerance of aggression) help us understand where today's generation of German leaders are coming from.

As a new US administration faces a Europe less in need of the old NATO protective canopy, and a more self-assured Germany asserts itself within that new Europe, the implication for future transatlantic ties should be of interest to more than just foreign policy buffs. Americans who grew up on a steady diet of WW II books and movies will find Heneghan's updated German story gripping as well as enlightening.

Highly Recommended
A warm, compassionate and loving reflection of how true love in marriage can be. Tom Mullen's words inspire and encourage commitment, acceptance, understanding, forgiveness and Love.

A Very Good Marriage
First I read this book to myself and then my husband and I read it aloud following meals. Tom Mullen's faith, common sense, dedication to his wife, Nancy, and willingness to work with her to grow together through out their long, happy marriage sets a good example for all of us. The book documents how two people found joy in daily life, supported each other during illnesses, and other challenges. The author's sense of humor helps the reader find things in his/her own relationships about which to laugh. This book is a "good read" for all. It will be of interest and helpful to those just contemplating marriage as well as those who have lived many years together.

A true story of lasting and meaningful marital love
In the wake of sadly epidemic and chronic divorce statistics, A Very Good Marriage is a memoir to be treasured. It is the compelling and inspiring story of a Quaker husband and wife who stayed together and earned happiness through two careers, four children, and chronic health difficulties. Written by Quaker pastor Tom Mullen after the death of his beloved wife Nancy Mullen, A Very Good Marriage is a story of hope, of life, and of facing challenges united. Very highly recommended for anyone seeking a true story of lasting and meaningful marital love in a challenging and complex world.

Adventure in the context of world terrorism
This the action packed sequel to Gold Fever. The good doctor returns with the world in crisis. It's an interesting, though not hysterical, speculation of what could happen if terrorists put together a string of successful operations.

As in Gold Fever, it's the description of the relationships that form the living underpinnings of the book. Often hair-raising, I found this book entertaining and satisfying and occasionally touching.

A tale of terrorism that rings true!
Tom SternÕs second novel, Vatican Gold is as exciting as his first. Drawing on the characters established in Gold Fever, Stern weaves an intriguing tale of terrorism and corruption steeply based in the ancient traditions of the Catholic church.

The story, tapered with human emotions and based on excruciating research, begins after the World Trade Center bombings and unfolds in a continuous crescendo, building to its exciting climax. The book, though fiction, rings true to life and presents several plausible scenarios for what a war against terrorism may really be like in the end.

The writerÕs succinct style and elaborate detail makes this exciting reading and a must read for anyone who wants to look into the future of a world at war with terrorists

Vatican Gold
Thi is the second Tom Stern book I have read. My enjoyment of the first encouraged me to read Vatican Gold. While Gold Fever was excellent, Vatican Gold far exceeds it in depth, character development and plot. The mystery and adventure is well presented and intriguing in realms of possibilities the average person would never conceive of. This alone makes this book a MUST READ. Even better is the presentation of background detail and history unknown to even the most erudite scholar. The remarkable, intriguing history of the hidden details of the Catholic Church are almost as fascinating as the plot of the book itself. I highly recommend VATICAN GOLD to anyone who enjoys a captivating adventure story superbly presented.

Tom Clancy Boxed Set 2 Vol.: Debt of Honor, Executive Orders

Author: Tom Clancy

Average review score:

Ryan's Rise Up
The two of these books show the steep political rise of Jack Ryan. Debt of Honor is a book about war with the Japanese due to a dispute of land. The book itself is fair, but it sets the scene for the second book, Executive Orders. In this book, Jack Ryan becomes President of the United States and must deal with all kinds of problems, both outside the U. S. and inside. Although it is long, it is an absolutely excellent book.

Clancy Puts Us in Jack Ryan's Life, House, and Heart
Getting through a long book is not always easy, but Tom Clancy's Debt of Honor and Executive Orders turn the pages by themselves. Could make a great epic film if casted and directed with exquisite precision. Executive Orders picks up literally less than 20 minutes where Debt of Honor leaves off and is impossible to put down. A masterpiece combined in two books, Clancy places our heart and soul deeply within the mind of Jack Ryan. By the end of the books, the reader feels like a Ryan family member and a White House Staffer who bleeds Red, White, & Blue.

amazing - it's like watching CNN
this two books (along width "without remorse") are the best books i've ever read. very high level of tech details (as one could excpect from clancy) and great battles descriptions. but it yesterday!

Tom O'Bedlam
Published in Paperback by Warner Books (1986)
Author: Robert Silverberg

Used price: $0.01
Collectible price: $3.18
Average review score:

Naked Fantasy With Fig Leaf of Science
This story presents the characters an escape from their future, dystopian world. The theme includes other life forms whirling around distant stars. In his rather zany story Silverberg presents us with a rather [weak] cast of characters who become drugged with their dreams of other worlds. The character's dull, purposeless lives are overwhelmed by their visions. Within the story's parameters these dream worlds are said to exist in some objective manner as shown by photos returned from an extraterrestrial probe. The material can be interpreted in several ways: as positing the existence of parallel worlds, as merely subjective dream material of the characters, or as pure, naked fantasy. It seems that Silverberg uses a mere fig leaf of science to cover this naked fantasy.

Tom O'Bedlam is the most engaging and puzzling character. The author asks the reader to view Tom as possessing a telekinesis that enables him to transport people out of their bodies and into extraterrestrial worlds. Tom becomes the gateway or worm hole entrance to these dream worlds. Although Tom is portrayed as crazy or faking craziness, the reader is asked to accept Tom's killing of people as actually releasing them from the pain of their worldly life. The reader is asked to accept Tom's power to propel them to a kind of other world heaven. The willy nilly story becomes confusing when Tom transports both willing souls and unwilling souls out of their bodies-all types: a salvation seeker, a would be suicide and would be killer are all sent to a non human afterlife. All characters who Tom randomly touches are transported, leaving behind a corpse whose face is painted with a Crossing smile.

His Masterpiece
One of the most beautiful, thought-provoking sci-fi novels ever written. To put it quite simply, this book is brilliant; easily ranks as one of Silverberg's best novels...

Written during Robert Silverberg's artistic/creative peak (the 1980's), this book deals with the complex issues of personal faith, spiritualism and religion... it is at times violent, passionate, poetic, sensual, symbolic & profound... and it will leave you speechless...

Silverberg also introduced some of his most sympathetic, likable characters here... anyone who has ever faced an obstacle or dealt with a disability (mental or physical) will surely find inspiration in the character of Tom.

I've had my hardback copy for 15 years; it's one of my all-time favorite novels and I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning what GOOD sci-fi is all about.

Uncanny Prescience?
Has anyone else noticed that what happens in this book is spookily like what actually happened in San Diego about 10 years later in the Heaven's Gate mass suicide? i.e. a cult that believes they will be transported to a distant planet if they kill themselves. I would suppose Silverberg himself must have noticed the similarity and I am wondering if anyone knows what comment he had on it.
