Great Weather Primer
"Watching Weather" is a wonderful introduction to weather. The authors explain the basics and build on it to cover "el NiƱo" and other contemporary events. The book is well designed with clear graphics and interesting sidebars. The "Rules of Thumb" are particularly helpful in gauging the weather in your everyday life. The book ends on a strong note with a sobering, but not hysterical, discussion of the Greenhouse Effect. This comes after an engrossing look at past global warmings and ice ages. The hothouse world of the dinosaurs and the glacial planet of the cavemen give you some sort of reference for modern changes. "Watching Weather" is a quick and entertaining primer if you want to start learning more about weather.

Apply weather data
Tom Murphree and Mary Miller have explained the facts about weather in an easy-to-read text with everyday applications addressed. This meteorological book would be beneficial to middle school through adult ages. The book encourages you to watch the weather daily and try your hand at being your own local weather forecaster.

A VERY well written book!
Tom Murphree and Mary Miller lay out valuable weather concepts in easy to understand terms. In fact, I've read several weather books and this rates at the top for ease of understanding, flow and entertainment...yes it's entertaining!

The graphics are very nice as well. They give it a "personally drawn" look!

Anyone in meteorology, or just wondering about weather should have this book on their shelf!

good buy
Really good read - the author cuts through thousands of pages to ive you bite-sized info saving you time & money. Now I want to go and read some of the books he summarises and think I'll get their points much more quickly & clearly with my new knowledge of the field!

Informative, inspiring and satisfying
Butler-Bowdon's book is just the kind of book one would hope to find in this genre. I had picked it up with the intent of browsing through some of the summaries, but quickly found myself going from one summary to the next, and the next. Each classic is discussed in uncomplicated prose, with Butler-Bowdon's own inimitable wit and insight. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it is so much more than a simple summation of key principles but in fact manages to convincingly give us a sense of how each author and their respective classic came to fruition. It's the kind of book that's almost guaranteed to invigorate your sense of purpose. It makes one want to 'suck the marrow out of life' and we all need such reminding every now and then.

Fantastic Compendium
This is a fantastic compendium of ideas, elegantly presented and superbly described and selected by the author. If you want to get the best insights into how to change your life, it is all here. Butler-Bowdon will whet your appetite and I confidently predict that you will buy one of the books he summarises, and then another, and then another ... because his judgment is so good.

One of the great things is that you can browse in this book for five minutes, and are bound to come up with an idea you can use right away to improve your personal life. Do it, and then dip back into the book later.

A book to keep with you, especially for those times when life really is difficult. But inspiring too at any time.

It has really helped me, and can help you too. Go read!

The Art and Science of Sails: A Guide to Modern Materials, Construction, Aerodynamics, Upkeep, and Use
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (1990)
Authors: Tom Whidden and Michael Levitt
Amazon base price: $37.50
Average review score:

An eyeopener
Before I read Tom Whidden's book I too was victim to a whole load of old wives tales, black magic and voodo of sail trim.

Having read the book I can finally look at a sail and start to understand what is really happening. Tom Whidden's book manages to demystify otherwise difficult to understand topics with simplicity and clarity.

Truly outstanding book
The authors draw from their vast experience and share the various philosophies of sail design with the reader, exploring in more detail the North approach of designing sails the engineers way, so to speak. An outstanding book, covering all the important design choices and their consequences, and how they relate to sail trim. The book also includes perhaps the best written, short and concise explanation of the complexity of sail aerodynamics I have ever read.

Learn how modern sails REALLY work!
I am very impressed by the way the author has made a very complex subject understandable, enjoyable and relevant! The science behind it all is fluid dynamics...but to the reader this book is ALL about sailing.

The explanations of how each individual sail works are very clear. Even more vital is the knowledge of how the foresail and main interact, how that impacts on boat speed and performance and how you can use that to improve your sailing. The explanation of "the slot", how it works and why the "myths" are "myths" I found particularly revealing!

The other feature that appealed to me was the balance between the technicalities and other aspects. The practical assessment of different sail materials was great, and the history and anecdotes of how modern sail design grew up is absorbing.

It isn't for the total novice...but it will teach a great deal to anyone beyond that.

Superb presentation of Buddhism's basics
As a novice in Buddhism, I found this book to be an exceptional presentation of the basics of the Buddha's teachings. The text is broken down into short chapters on key subjects, such as friendship, lying, making money, helpings others. This format makes the book very useful, one that can be read over and over for either daily meditations or for review to help you re-focus your behavior. It also is very helpful in presenting key sections of important sutras in the Buddha's teachings. A wonderful and highly recommended book.

What America needs now...
is ethics, and this book is an excellent overview of ethics from a Buddhist perspective. It is straighforward and unpretentious, and a great source of inspiration. I've read a number of Buddhist texts, and this is the one I keep coming back to. There are 33 chapters, each devoted to a particular ethical issue, such as "Overcoming Greed," "Not Killing," and "How to Manage Wealth." Since the chapters are brief (usually 3-5 pages), I try to re-read one of them every day as part of my practice.

A thoughtful present
I purchased this book for a friend's birthday, thinking it would make a nice gift. When it arrived, I glanced through it and found I couldn't put it down!

It's full of sage advice for handling every day frustrations - dealing with anger and jealousy, judging others, staying focused on the bigger picture -- delivered in a warm, compassionate style that is easy to read and follow.

Needless to say, I now have to buy another copy for my friend!

One Man's Lasting Legacy
I bought this book for three compelling reasons. First, I am a long-time Dallas Cowboys fan. Secondly, I always admired and looked up to Tom Landry as a leader and a devoted Christian gentleman. Lastly, I love to collect and use quotes. I loved reading this book for one simple reason - it exceeded all expectations for all my reasons for buying it.

I cried the day Tom Landry died, and again the day after his death when I read articles and listened to television stories about the life and times of Tom Landry. This simple, little book brought back many of those same emotions. This book is not one author's lofty opinions about a man. It is a collection of quotes, stories, and vignettes from scores of people from all walks of life who are united in their deep love and respect for a man among men, a man of unquestioned character and integrity.

You do not have to be a Dallas Cowboys fan, nor know a thing about Tom Landry, nor do you need to collect quotes to enjoy and be motivated by this book. If you are inspired by reading true accounts of moral, spiritual, and successful leaders, then this book will exceed all your expectations, too.

Made me cry and laugh at the same time
I had the privilege of meeting Tom Landry a few times and found him to be the most gracious person you could ever hope to know. These memories really took me back in time. The world is a poorer place without him

"Must" reading for all Landry fans!
Famed football coach Tom Landry passed away in February 2000, leaving behind a life of accomplishment rarely equaled and never surpassed. Former Dallas Cowboys players, assistant coaches, and others close to Landry contributed to The Book Of Landry by offering fresh testimonials and remembrances of the man. Landry quotes are culled from materials published over the decades of Landry's professional and personal life. Here presented are tributes to his childhood, family, coaching philosophy, Christian faith, motivational tactics, and the Landry "Look". The Book Of Landry is "must" reading for all Landry fans.

Tons of useful stuff for real business people
Not too trendy, not too trite--just right, which is unusual in business books. Yeah, lots of companies have flamed out, and values are way down, and there's this Enron thing. But the Internet is still changing, if not everything, a lot of things. And perspicacious executives will be looking for ideas about how to stay ahead, because it isn't getting any easier or any less competitive. Citrin's book offers a lot of real, practical insight gleaned from an assortment of businesses that, whatever the stock price says this week, seem pretty likely to survive and prosper.

Insightful, Prescriptive, and Enjoyable
For those looking for a roadmap for sucessful businesses, Zoom is the book for you. With Zoom, Jim Citrin insightfully reveals the important success factors for successful businesses, and how companies have deployed them. The lessons of Zoom are not time dependent; they transcend business and technology eras. Zoom could also serve as an important aid for companies that have become derailed and provide a roadmap to get them back on the success road. I thought Zoom was excellent - insightful, actionable, and enjoyable.

Highly Recommended!
James M. Citrin draws his new business wisdom from detailed studies of 12 successful start-ups and blue chips. Identifying the common threads in these two groups, he comes to a simple conclusion: To win in the modern marketplace, companies must combine traditional management techniques with cutting-edge methods and technology. Even if some the conclusions presented here fail to surpass the obvious, we from getAbstract recommend this book for its cross-section of best practices, old and new.

Andre Thinks
I think Air Mail to the Moon was a good book because she was thinking about all of the things she was going to get with her tooth from the tooth fairy.

Dy-Quill's Word
I think Air Mail to the Moon is an excellent book. I think it was an excellent book because she was going around acusing people of stealing her tooth. She said, "When I catch him or her, I am going to Air Mail them to the moon".

Tanazia's Review
I think Air Mail to the Moon is an excellent book. I think it was excellent because she thought everyone stole her tooth, but she had it all the time. It was such a funny book!

Good thinking
Great book of thought-provoking ideas. If you need to reflect on where you are in life, and where you want to go next, this book provides some insightful questions - not answers.

Agesless Wisdoms Integrated into a Practical Success Guide
This book does the reader a great service. With Tom's academic background he has searched the wisdoms of the ages to bring you a practical framework which will guide you in creating success in your life and business. His entertaining presentation style comes across in his writing, making this book very intriguing. It is a book that should be read and re-read as one implements the 7 C's of success. I will recommend this book to students and executives to give them an edge in making their careers and lives more successful. An inspiring and uplifting book. It will motivate you to achieve your dreams. It is "must have" for everyone's library.

A True Success Book At Last!
I am sorely disappointed that many of the major bookstores are not carrying The Art of Achievement.

It should be proudly displayed on the New Book stand in all its glory!

I've read other "success" oriented books and I can honestly say that Tom Morris latest book carries a depth far surpassing the majority. Although the subtitle "Mastering the 7 Cs of Success in Business and Life" may sound typical and perhaps a bit trite the vast amount of wisdom, insight, spirit and inspiration within these pages brings one to a point of realization, comfort and hope other pop books on success simply cannot touch!

If you have not been able to win friends and influence people. If your cheese has been moved and eaten up. If your prayer of Jabez is left unanswered it's time you to learn how to master the 7 c's of success!
