A fascinating view into the people, trials and tribulations, and personal drama of National Public Radio.. Thomas Looker vividly paints a picture of a medium whose currency is words and not pictures- The book is a testament to the very power of words which radio exemplifies..Highly recommended- especially to those who are sated with the pap spewed forth by sit-coms and movies rife with special visual effects.

The Sporting Club plays out the alpha male/other guy dynamic in a really fresh funny way. Its the story of two grown young men of privilege, reunited at the sporting club in Michigan that they played and hunted at as kids. Stanton, the tough guy with the cojones collides with Quinn, the sensitive brooder. They start with pranks on each other and their peers and eventually get to sabotage and guerrilla warfare. Absolutely hilarious. Think Caddyshack meets Fight Club. The writing is superb. Crisp prose, fully fleshed characters and imagery. Mcguane has quite the vocabulary. He's obviously smarter than you, smarter than me but thankfully without self-indulgence. He doesn't write for his own sake or merely for the sake of writing, and the prose clearly has the reader in its sights, or is it sites? At any rate, great book, page turner, tons o' fun.

Stories from the Mines

This book is a fantastic read!
Not only because of the fact it has so many great archive photos, some of which I haven't seen before, but because it takes a look at the immigrant anthracite coal miners personal story, including the organization of the UMWA, (United Mine Workers of America), as well as the role of coal mining being an integral part of the Industrial Revolutions starting drive. I found it to be well worth it's value, (29.99 plus ship/hand) especially since the 100th anniversary celebration of the Great UMWA Strike is here, (1902 was the Strike). It complements the PBS broadcast, and EMMY nominated film it was based on nicely. (the VHS of the film is available for purchase also, I got that too). But in any light, it makes a great coffeetable book, as well as a nice conversation piece for gatherings, and is highly recommended by this lover of heritage.

This is the kind of book I will read more than once, or even many times. It is a how-to for people seeking to develop their psychic abilities, or self-talk, and help their health in the process. There are other books on inner talk, power of positive thinking, programmed self-talk from psychologists, but this book is written by a psychic. It's not technical, though it will require a close read. Best of all, it's not another formula book from overeducated shrinks and MDs. It is sort of intuitive psychoneuroimmunology, even though that term wasn't mentioned to my recollection. It is like books on self-hypnosis, which teach to access the unconscious. I was very interested in this book because there have been times in life when I'm very intuitive, but it is not an on-demand thing. It is elusive. Often I don't know what will be accurate, what won't. This book offers an alternative to conventional psychology and to Kahuna lore. If I had only a few books for cancer patients, I'd want this book along with The Ph Miracle, Secret Science Behind Miracles (about Hawaiian Kahunas), probably Hulda Clark's and a book on energy medicine. A very curious book, I really like it!

Stove by a Whale: Owen Chase and the Essex

This excellent book contains about the completest history of the sinking of the Essex by a whale in 1820, which provided Melville the idea for his climax in the novel. Not only does it contain all the information known on the Essex's crewmen, but it also contains, unabridged, Chase's Narrative, along with the accounts of the survivors and their rescuers, plus Melville's marginalia in his copy of Chase's Narrative. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the Essex, 19th century whalers, or Herman Melville.

'Street People,' comprising Paul Perry's award-winning short stories in an arresting collection, is a poignant look at folks whose homes are wherever they are. The stories are not maudlin or oversympathetic, nor are they unnecessarily aesthetic. They are simply presented. And they are teeming with life. People blessed with four walls and a roof, count your blessings. Perry brings to absolute life the stark, matter of fact existences of the homeless, the wanderer, the seeker, the down-and-out. He's a good writer and his subject matter is compelling, but most of all, he's a great storyteller. From the homeless pair whose frustration is laid bare when their dead acquaintance's body lies ignored by the side of the highway for days, to the prostitute who carries her pimp's baby, to the simple act of sheltering in an abandoned automobile on a cold night, these stories touched a deep chord in me. I deeply appreciated that Perry gives these folks, through 'Street People,' credible and legitimate voice. Three cheers for Pocol Press of Virginia, which has begun to anthologize the work of some very talented emerging writers. Support this press and pick up Paul Perry's book -- you'll be pleased on a number of levels that you did.

This is a cool book. The author captures through pictures and words what it means to participate in the Sturgis Rally. Through more than 25 stories, the author introduces the reader to the many folks drawn to Sturgis; to the diversity of the rally goers; to their bikes; to the stories they share; and to the freedom that brings them together.
Through each story I learned a bit more about what leads people, from all walks of life, to gather and celebrate true freedom. The book includes stories from people with names like Mad Max, Papa Smurf, Boodan and Joker but also tells the story more average riders like Ron and Sharon. I like the way the stories drew me into the life of each rider, the way it included young and old, men and women, and all variety of bikes.
The book is as engaging to look at as it is to read. I gave a copy of the book as a gift to my Harley friend and he loved it.

'The Summer House' is the first Alice Thomas Ellis book I read. Although I have read two of her novels since, as well as many of her 'Home Life' articles (not to be missed!), 'The Summer House' has remained my favorite. As anyone who has read her books knows, her prose is unmatchable. Divided into three parts, each with its own narrator of the same events, the author astutely captures the voices of a young, confused woman about to be married, her mother's middle-aged worldly friend, and the elderly mother-in-law-to-be. This book is witty and at times hysterical. I highly recommend 'The Summer House' to anyone interested in reading Ellis' work.

Inspite of the seemingly far-fetched theory on how AIDS got started, this book hits more than one button on the reader. While the story line could have been developed some more, the medical/legal content is staggering, particularly so that much of the stuff written as "fiction" is in fact verifiable! I suppose the author must have worried about being targeted by "someone" and chose the thriller route rather than a documentary. I've taken Mr McCollum up on what he says through one of his characters that all these facts can be looked up - and I was stunned. Everybody should read this one.
