Cancelled Words: Rediscovering Thomas Hardy

Thomas Hardy, in his own words
Cancelled Words.

I've received comments on the seeming high price of Cancelled Words, and it seemed a good idea to explain why this should be. I was the editor at Routledge responsible for publishing the book in 1992.

This is a ground-breaking work, about what can happen when an author gets into the hands of a determined editor. Thomas Hardy was then a virtual unknown, not recognized as one of the world's greatest writers. He had little choice but to allow his editor, the august and supremely self-confident, Leslie Stephen, to 'cancel' Hardy's own words in 'Far from the Madding Crowd'.

Stephen was worried that Hardy's very Un-Victorian presentation of human relationships and sexuality would offend the sensibilities of readers. So when he reacted badly to Hardy's improprieties, he just cut them out.

So we have always read a purged Far from the Madding Crowd, without seeing the book that Hardy first wanted us to have. Very few of Leslie Stephen's changes made it a better novel: Hardy's own first words and ideas are always immeasurably superior.

But that was not the end of the story. Years afterwards the original manuscript was rediscovered by accident and preserved so we can now know what Thomas Hardy really wanted to say before he was censored. That manuscript is now in the Beinecke Library at Yale University and has been used to write 'Cancelled Words'.

Rosemarie Morgan believed that it is essential to see what were Thomas Hardy's own words as he wrote them. That was the essence of the book and we at Routledge took the decision that a quarter of it should be given up to Hardy's words, in his own handwriting, faithfully reproduced in facsimile with the cancellations and changes visible for all to see.

Of course, regrettably, this made the book more expensive, but I still think this was the right decision. And the publication of Cancelled Words contributed substantially to her groundbreaking new edition of Far from the Madding Crowd, published by Penguin Books, and giving back that original edition to the world.

I would hate to think that our decision should put off future readers from buying a book that takes you into the heart of one of the master works of English fiction.

Book presents human side of Princeton's career and loss.
This book delves into the human element that makes up any warship. It starts from the Navy's conception of a class of light carriers, retrofitted from light crusiers, that would serve as a stop-gap measure until the larger Essex Class carriers could be brought on line. The resulting developement was a small, but fast, carrier that was staffed by battle experienced officers and men, many from the USS Hornet, that quickly gained the attention and admiration of the Navy's top brass. From the energy filled first hand accounts of dog fights, related by the participants themselves, to the heroric effort to save the ill fated ship during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the authors present never before printed insight into both the ship and the crew. The book dispells many previous inaccuracies concerning the source of the explosions that would dome not only the Princeton, but would also claim hundreds of victims that made up the crew of the USS Birmingham. These first hand accounts were collected over the years by interviewing the participants at veteran reunions and recollections of Mr. Bradshaw, himself a crew member of the USS Princeton. From the combat wizzardry of VF-27 (Catsmouth) to the daring deed of Ens. Burgess, the reader will truly enjoy this book. I give it a thumbs up all the way!

Pretty damn good
I'm very proud of my father for writing a book that captures one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world (sadly it was torn down a couple of years after Mikel's novel was completed.). I highly recommend it to all who love a good mystery

Now here's an author who does her research. She is also a careful reader of the fiction she analyzes. I can't wait for her to write another book. When it comes out, I will be among the first to buy it.

Civilization and the Absentee Shawnees
Florence Drake was a well-respected professor at the University of Oklahoma, when she wrote this book. She interviewed, Thomas Wildcat Alford, and he told his story to her. He was the grandson of Tecumseh. He told what he felt and thought, as he was given the opportunity to leave his tribal home and attend an American school. He was the first one of his family to do so. This book gives the reader his perspective of his story, and it is well written, so that you understand his time in history.

Clarel: A Poem and Pilgrimage in the Holy Land (The Writings of Herman Melville: The Northwestern-Newberry Edition, Vol 12)
Published in Hardcover by Northwestern University Press (1991)
Authors: Herman Melville, Harrison Hayford, and G. Thomas Tanselle
Amazon base price: $113.00

A Problematic But Great Classic
Since no one else has written about Clarel, I thought I'd be nice to Melville and congratulate him on his epic poem. Although the poetry itself isn't always brilliant, I felt that the general tone of melancholic spirituality was powerful. Essentially, to me, Clarel was about a young man questioning his world, and searching for meaning in a seemingly meaningless existence. The book parallels Melville's own travels in Jeruseleum, and with this work, we get a glimpse into Melville's interpretation of spirituality. Highly recommended, considering that it is overshadowed by that other Melville work (Moby Dick, of course!).

Stories of powerful genius with a narrator to match
This collection should get SIX stars. Having sampled one of Audio Connoisseur's other recordings, and being hugely impressed, I went out and purchased this one. I had always wanted to know a little about German literature, assuming that a nation that can build fabulous cars could also produce a few good authors. Before I say anything about the stories, let me just tell you that the narrator, Charlton Griffin, is probably the greatest reader now living. I say that in all honesty. Never have I encountered recorded literature in which ALL the characters, including women and children, have been performed with such utter believability and astonishing acumen. You will shake your head in disbelief that only one person is performing all these voices. I differ with the above AudioFile reviewer who castigates Griffin for his pacing. The pacing is perfect, almost stately. In the appropriate places it has a dreamlike quality. The stories are a very good cross section of German literature over a period of 150 years, beginning with Goethe and ending with Lampe. Every single one of these little masterpieces has a jewel-like quality and a sparkling intelligence behind them. I approached this subject with mild trepidation and came away astonished at the variety and depth of German writers. My favorites in this volume were the stories by Mann, von Hofmannsthal and Schnitzler. Not content with merely great stories, Audio Connoisseur has tastefully added music and sound effects...but only in perfectly suitable places and without distraction. They seem to fit in organically, as though a film were rolling in your head. If you are an educator, this would be an indispensable teaching tool. My admiration for Audio Connoisseur knows no bounds at this point. May they continue this level of quality forever.
