Looking at Africa through many eyes. Complex & interesting!
Traditional African powers and imposed western ideas are juxtaposed in this complex and interesting story. If you liked Barbara Kingsolver's "Poisonwood Bible", chances are you will like this book too. In Antonia Saw the Oryx First we meet characters through the eyes of an American doctor who has been in Africa long enough to feel more African than American, yet her perspective is a mixture of both cultures. The characters are complex and very different from each other. Each character seems to represent a different face of Africa - the precolonial, the traditional, the colonized desperate to reclaim his roots, the native-born colonist, and the reincarnated new Africa.

Early in the story, a young woman - Esther - is brought to the doctor's clinic near death from a violent, upsetting episode with a sailor. It took me a while to find the courage to return to the book after that, but the return was worth it. We witness Esther's remarkable rebirth and her gradual transformation to a healer of a more traditional sort. We are thrust(along with the doctor) between the world of traditional African medicine and western medicine, often wondering which really has the greatest power and will prevail in the constantly changing African world. Who belongs in Africa, and who can rightfully find their own place there? The answers will have you thinking a long time!

A Companion to Thomas Mann's the Magic Mountain (Studies in German Literature, Linguistics, and Culture)

Eleven essays by articulate scholars
Thomas Mann brought German fiction into the mainstream of European literature beginning with the publication of his novel "Buddenbrooks" in 1901 to his death in 1955. Before his literary work, German novels were rarely read outside of the German-speaking countries. He was the first since Goethe to attract a large international audience to stories written in the German language. Mann considered the single greatest novel of his literary career to be "The Magic Mountain", a true modernist classic. Very highly recommended, informative, and insightful reading for Thomas Mann enthusiasts and German Literary studies, A Companion To Thomas Mann's Magic Mountain is an impressive collection of eleven essays by articulate scholars addressing the contributions of Thomas Mann in a post-modernist era, with particular reference to his comic vision, homosexuality, attitude toward Jews, his novel within the landscape of postmodern life; the theme of solitude, music in the novel, technology, and more.

Trancendent Reading Experience
I've treasured this work of Mr. Wolfe's since purchasing it in the first edition in 1988. I can think of few authors who can transport their readership into relms of utter beauty and transcedence. Experiencing them is a gift to behold.
A MUST start for those who have not read anything by Wolfe.
A treasure for all times.

If you could give 6 stars, this book would have it!
This book is my all time favorite book! In the beginning it's a little hard to follow, but keep reading and you're hooked! I love how the childern are the stars of the book. The way Bruno talks is soo cute! This book touches on very natural things, but it presents them in a wonderfully different view. It has a feel to it that no other book has. The plot is there, but it's very vague so that the book is very relaxed and open-minded. If you like Sylvie and Bruno, Sylvie and Bruno Concluded is a must! My favorite part of the book is how wonderfully it concludes and leaves you perfectly content, yet a little bit of wonder still lingers. From all angles, this book is one of a kind!

Intelligent and Riveting
This collection of novels is a beautiful and intellgently written volume, one that is an interesting read. If one wants comparisons, it could be compared to Garcia Marquez's style--very dense, very descriptive, very mysterious. There are copies of it available used... Buy it!

Wrong author listed for black monk time and Cowboy like Me
There are a few copies of Cowboy like me, still in print. It is by the same author of Black Monk Time, Thomas Edward Shaw & Anita Klemke. Thomas M. Shaw as listed on black monk time, is not an author of this book. Nor is Thomas (no middle initial) Shaw.
