Must Reading for Health Care Executives
This book is essential reading for any leader in the world of health care. Health care execs are confronted with complex, highly charged negotiation challenges, internal and external, nearly every day. Many of these conflicts can damage lives and corporate finances. The book gives you very practical, results-oriented advice on how to resolve conflicts and move forward.

Dr. Marcus is the nation's leading expert in health care negotiations and conflict resolution, having helped numerous high-profile organizations overcome conflicts and reach mutually productive agreements. This book thoughtfully conveys this valuable expertise.

Excellent principles for conflict resolution
Marcus presents a broad spectrum of options for getting through tough times in the healthcare industry. The personable style and ongoing case history make this a very readable presentation.

Marcus teaches us that conflict is not only always present and unavoidable but can be used as a catalyst for good change. He describes differences in types of negotiation, mediation, and arbitration. He is a proponent of interest-based negotiation which is an attempt to improve the lot of the whole by improving the parts. He advocates active listening.

As witness to his sincerity, he dedicates a chapter each to four of the healthcare stakeholders: policymakers, healthcare management, physicians, and nurses. Each of these chapters speaks loudest to its own stakeholder, at once representing them and persuading them to enter into negotiation.

Postitional bargaining is also explored. Marcus does not advocate being a sacrificial lamb.

This book serves as an excellent introduction to the topic of conflict resolution and negotiation. However, in order to engage into the fray, one would also need to continue to study and practice the principles presented.

Although Marcus seems preachy at times and overhopeful at others, he is at least starting to draw the diverse and strong healthcare industry into one place to sit and talk. Hooray for that.

One of my favorite design books.
Often I'll enjoy a design book the first time I read through it, but I won't find myself interested in a second perusal. This book , however, is one I find myself drawn to time after time. Not only are the rooms beautifully photographed and fascinating to look at, but the glimpse at lives of the people who live in them is compelling. There are also enough different and unique styles covered by the book that each one doesn't begin to blur with the previous one as sometimes happens in design books that restrict themselves to a particular style. Highly recommended.

Great photographs
This book has beautiful and stylish photos that really capture the essence of San Francisco. It is a great gift for anyone who lives in San Francisco or has visited the area. It's a good coffee table book.

An invaluable aid in teaching, recommended for students.
As an instructor in Scientific Art at the University of Washington for the past 15 years, I have found the 1st and 2nd editions of SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION to be an invaluable aid in my teaching. It has been an excellent resource that I can recommend to my students, both beginning and advanced.

To the beginner it brings step-by-step examples and basic information of materials; to the advanced it brings inspiration and further goals. The richness and diversity of illustration examples, both student and professional, give it an especially unique and appealing quality.

It deserves to be on every artist's shelf, both those specifically interested in the field of science art, as well as those who want to further their basic knowledge of realist art skills.

Kathyrn D. Barker

A valuable resource to both students and teachers.
As a professor at the only small college in the U.S. to offer a degree in scientific illustration, it is extremely valuable for my students to have access to a text that exposes them to the various techniques and applications associated with scientific illustration. Phyllis Wood's Scientific Illustration provides students with both a basic overview of the field, including introductory rendering techniques, and an in-depth discussion of the many applications of the work, such as presentation graphics and exhibit design.

The well-organized contents begin with traditional approaches and media, and end with an excellent chapter on computer applications. The numerous illustrations do not merely supplement the text, but act as lessons in themselves. Many of the best illustrators in the field are represented in the illustration credits.

My students and I are very grateful this resource is available to supplement the material presented in the classroom.

Wonderful!
I loved it! I live in a small town in West Virginia, like the main character and I know what it's like to look out your window and see the beautiful mountains. I also know what it was like for Beth with her parents wanting something for her that she didn't want.

The Best Book That I Have Ever Read!
I think that every teenager should read this book. Beth just displays to me that she is such a hard worker and she tried everyday to keep her family in good health and helping her mother. I wanted her and Harless to get married all through the book. I think that they should make a movie about the book and Beth should be played by Katie Holmes. Hey, it's a thought! Thanks!

Another Gem From Phyllis Greene!
Take another trip with Mrs. Greene in which she continues to explain her world in ways which will add rich meaning to yours. Her insights into the "everyday" inspire a focus on living and experiencing and remembering. And through it all, your family, like hers, becomes a touchstone to the past and a lifeline to the future. The book structure is as unique as her perspective and her wisdom. Do yourself a huge favor and join her on her journey. You will think as you never have, dream with a boundless enthusiasm, love life more fully and find death less daunting. Bring on book number 3!

Life Gems Abound
Phyllis Greene again invites us into her world, where every transition is viewed as an opportunity to experience, to learn, and to savor--and, of course, family is the touchstone to the past and the lifeline to the future. And what a treat it is to glimpse the snapshots given so candidly here. You might smile, you might laugh out loud, and you might cry. One result though, is not a "might". You will absolutely and without question understand anew that soaking up what is around you will make you feel your best. And you will be profoundly grateful to Mrs. Greene, and like me, anxiously wait for book number three.

This was a book that I enjoyed very much. I couldn't put it down. The way everyone is so cold to Mallie, except for Dr. Martin, in which she finds the strength to stay and accomplish what she has come to do in favor of her dead mother, really made me think of the courage of this girl when she was practically all alone. The ending is great because who would of have thought those things would actually fall into place. I can't say more about this book. You'll just have to read it to find out. I recommend this book to all teenage and adult readers who are fans of mystery and romance.

pretty good overall
What made this book stand out was its likeable heroine, one without the flawless beauty one usually finds in romances. A beautiful setting and a charming little boy makes this book worthwhile.

Taoism: Growth of a Religion
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (1997)
Authors: Isabelle Robinet and Phyllis Brooks
Amazon base price: $55.00
Average review score:

A key text on Taoism
A highly recommendable scholarly discussion of the origin and development of Taoism up to the 14th century CE. I have long been frustrated by the popular distinction between 'philosophical' and 'religious' Taoism, since such a distinction could in principle be made of any religion. The danger is that what westerners like they call 'philosophical' and what they don't like they label 'religious'and then dispense with. The idea that some metaphysical 'essence' of Taoism deserves to be taken seriously, while the rituals and practice of Taoism do not is fundamentally bad scholarship. Fortunately then, Robinet challenges the popular view head on by claiming and showing that 'religious' Taoism is simply the practice of 'philosophical' Taoism. One without the other is senseless. This is an important work, but for a general introduction to Taoism for the interested beginner I would also recommend Martin Palmer's 'The Elements of Taoism'. Palmer sems to be aware of and in sympathy with Robinet's position.

A must for serious students of Chinese religious history
This is simply an excellent volume, a solid overview of one thousand years of Daoism from THE expert on the Shangqing school of southern Daoism (4th-5th c.AD). The bibliography alone makes this book worth it, both extensive and broken down by period. I'm just finishing up a master's concerning Ge Hong's "Baopuzi" and I'm about to start a Ph.D. project on the "Huainanzi," and I must say that even though I've read many excellent texts on Daoism, Robinet's provides some excellent defining concepts as well as a good introduction to many of the strengths of French scholarship in my field.

Living in victory!
This is one of the best books I've read (and I've read a lot of them) on overcoming the various obstacles confronting a Christian as they attempt to walk out the destiny that God has planned for their life. I found the chapter on overcoming low self-worth to be particularly insightful and helpful.

This book is full of practical strategies, spiritual principles, and wisdom that can be applied to the situations we face in everyday life. There are "Principles to Remember" in each chapter, and Scripture verses to help us stay focused and moving in the right direction. It's a book I'll pick up and refer to often ....

I would recommend it very highly.

I love this book!
It was helpful, thought-provoking, and easy to read.It made me want to keep on "keeping on."
