A very unusual book that is true but won't be believed.
I read this book almost a year ago, and the reason I decided to write this was because I was surprised and glad to see it available in a mainstream source. The book is about a specific, terrifying incident of American statesmen illegally giving top secret American (military) information to Israel. The author is not a professional writer, so it has its flaws, however, one must admire the courage it took for him to write it. The establishment does not appreciate criticism against Israel, an issue which the book also touches on but not nearly in depth enough. Unfortunately, the book probably isn't believed by enough people

The Bible and Literature
The target audience is teachers of English who have grown up without the basic Bible knowledge expected of every educated person a couple of generations ago. A secondary market must be biblical scholars and teachers who suffer similar deficiencies when it come to English literature.

Familiar Bible passages and relevant extracts from English literature therefore find themselves side by side without any attempt to relate the one to the other, thus providing a resource of considerable value to both parties. In each case we have a few pages of commentary on the biblical passages with a brief explanation as to why each of the liteary passages was chosen, followed by a selection of literary material without commentary. Literary sources include Milton, Chaucer, Augustine, Kirkegaard, T S Eliot, D H Lawrence, C S Lewis, Gerald Manley Hopkins, Dylan Thomas, Bunyanm, Dryden, Shakespeare, Umberto Eco, Oscar Wilde, Shaw, Wordsworth, James Joyce and Derrida.

Two meanings of the Bible in literature are differentiated: the one which treats the Bible simply as a collection of secular writings and the other which sees a literary understanding of the Bible not as a subsititute for its religious content but as an adjunct to it.

Tasteful VS non-tasteful
I like this book better then American Corporate Identity 2002. I think it offers more - it is not only bigger but seams to be more diverse, which I suppose contradicts a bit to the title.

It has an index over clients and design firms at the end, other then that the whole book is full of designs.
Looking at the inside I think it offers more complete graphic solutions, it has very little text about the design; just who has done it and for whom (therefor I rate it 4 out of 5, instead of 5, some would want to know more about the thoughts behind the design, see more of the whole).

Other then that I think it is a great book that you as a designer could use not only for your own inspiration but for the customer as well, to get some ideas about what their competitors are showing and so on. Since it shows a lot of different designs for both print and web it works as a good reference when you want to make sure you are not creating a design for a company that is allready in use by another, as well.

'Princess Gets Her Own Back!'
In this excellent fantasy short story, the theme of monarchial sucession is dealt with from the insider's point of view.

Of course all is not simple nor magic free (after all this is Stephen Donaldson!), and the heir apparant finds herself pitted against high born rivals, sexy traitors, personal assault and worst of all self doubt..that she is REAL?

Confused? read the book, it is short and unputdownable, and then tell me afterwards....what would you have been?

THE END OF TIME
This is the thrid and final book in a often detailed and sometime glossy overview of the last decade of the Doctor - the 1980's. The book chronicles the end of Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor and the rise of Peter Davidson as the 5th and the decline and fall of the series with Colin Baker (who in my book was never given the chance or the material to really shine) and Sylvester McCoy. The books gives behind the scenes details into the stories, the people, public intrest (and sometimes disinterest), as well as ending chapters on all the merchandise (with layouts and cool pictures) produced during the 1980's. As a whole the entire collection is a must for every Doctor Who fan, on it's own, the material is solid, well written and worth the price. The only downside perhaps is that the material can get a bit thin in places, and sometimes leaving wanting to know more. But this is not very often. Pick up the 1960's first to really get the full effect.

A good, short introduction
This is a short but good introduction to how we know that something is true. It is written by a Christian and he uses his Christian beliefs to illustrate his approach but the issues he addresses are universal. The basic idea is that everyone must construct a holistic worldview that makes sense in light of logic, experience, etc. I reccommend this as a solid introduction to this area.

Decent historical reference on political economy.
I am a student of Stephen Gill at York University in Toronto, Canada. This book was therefore required course reading for me. It is a very thorough from a historical materialist perspective. A good book for reference as the chapters are spit up into topics that usually run two pages in length. The only problem with this piece would lie in the fact that it is almost a decade old.

Embracing both sides
This is an interesting book by a liberal Christian regarding how he combines faith and science. He does not combine them very smoothly. The book lurches as it goes from cosmology to religion. Wilkinson does a good job at describing physics in a readable way, but left me without any new ways of looking at things. I found the book Finding Darwin's God to be more personal and touching in describing that author's struggle to make sense of religious conflicts over biology instead of physics. That is a better book unless one is interested strictly in physics.

GOOD LEGAL PERSPECTIVE
It should be noted from the outset that this book is not primarily on the Hartford fire itself, although it is covered in the first chapter. It is on the legal and financial fallout from the disaster. The authors explain that an out of court agreement was reached whereby the circus would be kept running while its owners paid out claims. The receiver for the case refused payment until all claims had been handled. Litigation arose only when it came time to pay the receiver, and he asked for $175,000. Had the circus declared bankruptcy as expected at first, claimants would have gotten next to nothing. The authors see this as a model settlement for mass disaster claims.

When I first picked this book up, I expected it to be a legal bore and almost returned it. But it was actually quite good. It presented a perspective on the Hartford fire and on disasters in general one rarely gets from most books. It is especially recommended for trial lawyers and litigants. Still, those interested in more standard accounts are urged to look at other books on the fire.

The authors are right to applaud the Hartford settlement and encourage alternative dispute resolution, but two questions are raised. First of all, as they admit, the fact that everyone was reasonable and efficient in 1944 during the war does not mean they will act that way today. Secondly, I fear that lawyers may use the threat of expensive litigation to coerce innocent defendants into paying up during mediation, sending us all back to square one.

Transformational Room Chapter is great
The chapter on the transformational room offers generous descriptions and anaylsis of reseach based concepts. Verderber and Fine clasify the maternity suite as such a room, they also provide a great BRIEF history of birthing centers in the U.S. The book seems well thought out and thorough.
