Sloppy detailing
Useful and informative, but Norton was a bit slap-dash in its production. The "newly-drawn plans" were disappointing and nowhere near the standard in architectural publishing; whoever was responsible shouldn't have been.

Four stars for a Great architect, but so-so publisher.
I really love David Adler. I was thrilled to find out that this book was in the making. But when I finally got my hands on it I was furious to find that there were no color plates in the entire book. All photographs are archival. The Richard Crane mansion in Ipswich is a tremendous house, and I appreciate the old view from the beach, but how does that compare to the view now that all of the landscape has come to maturation. Not including color plates and more contemporary shots was a cruel tease to play.

beautiful book -- excellent gift!
growing up in Lake Forest, IL...I, too saw these beautiful country estates -- but never knew the common theme was David Adler. Such a wealth of information and history that I have to thank Mr. Salny for. We are talking an era of architecture that included not only the design of a building, but also the design of the gardens, the interiors, etc. A fabulous book -- beautiful and inspiring in so many ways!

Not Worth It
I feel though David Wolfe brings up some good information he assumes many things where his knowledge comes short. For example: he doesn't understand the digestion of fats very well. His advice can be very misleading. He prescribes a formula for balancing a candida overgrowth very poorly without good evidence. Much of it is very general.
I feel that in this book David Wolfe is trying to sell the raw vegan diet instead of just spreading the word. He constantly recommends his company's products at his website. He has an entire chapter about how great true raw olives are and then says at the end of the chapter that his store is the only reliable source to get good olives. What a salesman. I felt like I was reading a catalogue in many parts of the book.
The beginning and end of the book have nothing to do with the sunfood diet but more about his philosophy of life. I bought the book thinking I would have 300 pages of raw food information. The book is about two-thirds nonsense. He even goes as far as to give financial advice. I feel that David Wolfe turned a pretty good 100 page book into an overpriced 300 page catalogue on how to think like him and buy his products. I don't suggest the book there are better out there.

A must read for beginners and others
This is the first book of its kind, that basically summarizes how to be successful on the living and raw food diet. I believe that David has summarized what I have struggled to learn on my own, on how to be balanced on the diet. It is an excellent book for beginners and people that have already embraced this way of natural living. I wish the book would have been published about 5 years ago, it would have made my life much easier, but I did enjoy the (much slower) path of learning on my own, what he shares in his book.

Every page is an inspiration!
This was my first book that got me into the "raw movement." It changed my life, touching every aspect of my being. I cannot express my gratitude toward David Wolfe for creating this masterpiece. Anyone seeking a life of optimism, joy, and success on a personal level should own The Sunfood Diet Success System!

Wolfe's book contains 36 chapters of health transformation. Only ten or so of these specifically deal with the diet, while the book's key focus is on the mental transformation required. Each chapter has exercises at the end for the physical (diet) and mental changes. As recommended by David, keeping a journal and log of your diet will help with the transformation. The book begins with six chapters that ask you to take a look into your life. "Beliefs," "Goals," "Thoughts are Things," and "Faith" are a few of the chapters that promote your well-being on a spiritual level.

Starting with chapter 7, "The Sunfood Diet," the book introduces us to the diet of uncooked fruits, vegetables, and nuts. For those of you who have been wondering about this lifestyle, it's eating foods in their natural, unadulterated state. It is a step further than veganism, being called "raw-veganism." David thoroughly covers all aspects of eating raw. Items discussed are detoxification, food-combining, the SunFood Triangle (new pyramid), hybridized food, common questions, myths, and the wonders of a diet free of toxicity.

"Your idea of the world (what you believe the world is) manifests everything in your life. When you change your idea of the world, the world itself changes. Essentially, your mission isn't to set the world right, but simply to set yourself right. The world does not change, we change."

The Sunfood Diet Success System is filled with all of David's love. Every page is an inspiration. I can't begin to express my gratitude for the information that was revealed to me in this book. Its knowledge has continued to enlighten me through the last year. Inspirational, motivational; it's everything. Please get this book - do it for yourself. --Reviewed by Dan Jerke for vegetarianteen.com.

Spoiling the Psalms
It takes nerve to give the Psalms of David only one star, but I actually bought this book as a gift, but when it arrived I was horrified to find each page covered with the designs and original art of the editor, so intrusive that one could hardly find the printed words of the Psalms. And the artwork, obviously personally meaningful and fulfilling, certainly did not appeal to me. I returned the book, and finally bought an old, used Book of Psalms, just the words, no pictures.

Beautiful book
The artwork was really the main reason I purchased this book. I think the story of Mr. Freemantle lovingly creating this gorgeous work of art for his wife is wonderfully sweet. I already have access to the Psalms through my Bible, but I have to say I enjoy the words even more when they are set in such a lovely format! The reason I am one star short of five is that I think the publisher could have squeezed out a bit more money for higher quality printing to really do this artwork justice. I was a bit disappointed by the small size of this book and the simplicity of the hardbound design. I have this book out in the family room and would love it even more in a more generous size with embossed leather cover and glossy pages that can open flat to really emphasize the delicate drawings of Mr. Freemantle. For the price, this is a nice book. I think it would make a nice gift when a sweet something is in order.

An Incredibly Beautiful Book
I'm thrilled to see this book back in print. I bought it 20 years ago and have continued to be inspired by the beautiful combination of God's word and Freemantle's artwork. I plan to give several copies as gifts.

Great book for intermediate Delphi programmers!
If you have programmed in another language before, but not Delphi, this is the book for you. After a quick overview of general programming concepts, Pascal data types, etc., it goes into a thorough description of the Delphi 3 language and features. I did wish that it had more info on database programming--5 chapters wasn't enough for me!

Excellent Advanced-Expert book
This is one of my favorite Delphi 3 books, as it covers material not easily found elsewhere. This is not a beginner's book by any means. The coverage of DLLs, COM, and threading is outstanding. This is a book for those who want to delve more deeply into the relationships between VCLs and the WinAPI.

The Best Delphi 3.0 Book I've Read
I purchased this book with a view to learning more about OLE and COM which is covered very comprehensively. But I found that once I started reading the other chapters I could not put the book down. Some people have commented that this book is a poor teaching aid. This is not what this book sets out to do. QUE's guide puts this book at Accomplished to Expert level. If you are an experienced, professional programmer who needs an excellent reference book, buy this. You will not regret it.

Great rock icon lineage through bands like Fleetwood Mac
This book is great reading, mostly if you were apart of the rock revolution of the 60's and 70's. It is interesting to see the heritage of some of my favorite rock icons that came through the John Mayall bands into those like Fleetwood Mac. Mick is very introspective to a fault in this book, however he does humanize a lot of what was going on during those crazy years.

Highly entertaining and surprising history of Fleetwood Mac
I fully expected to read all the "soap-opera-ish" accounts of the turbulent Nicks-Buckingham early years (you do get plenty of this), but I didn't realize the original Fleetwood Mac had such an interesting early history! I've heard all the stories about this account not being 100% factual, but, even if it's not entirely accurate, it's very definetly worth the read. Fleetwood's self-depricating humor and honest (to a fault) dialouge make this one of the best Rock books that I've read...highly recommended.

A must for any Fleetwood Mac fan!
I had to wait a year and a half to get this book (it was already out of print). but boy, was it worthwhile! An insiders view of the often turbulent career of one of the greatest bands ever! Mick Fleetwood tells it all with an open heart. The book smells sincerity and the drummer gives us one of the best biographies I ever saw, telling all the good or bad facts he saw during his 25 plus years in the band. Unlyke meny other books about rock bands, mr. Fleetwood doe not try to hide anything about the rock life he gone through. I could not stop reading it until I finished it. A very touching book. As a human being and musician mr. Fleetwood has got my respect. Long Live Fleetwood Mac!

The closer you look, the better it is
My first quick perusal of this book lead to a mild sense of disappointment, but the more I studied the pictures, the more I came to appreciate their artistry. And while the pictures may be from the '60s and '70s, some poses seem very 1950's style. I would also prefer one picture of each model--and therefore more models. But the pictures are of high quality. All in all, a real Mel Roberts fan-either for eroticism or nostalgia-might easily enjoy his videos much more

Simple, timeless photography
Wow!! Does this book ever recapture those seemingly inncocent days of the 60s and early 70s?

Some wonderful models, wonderful locations and most of all a wonderfully bright and sunny California sky. Most of the photos have a warmth of light that simply glows from the page..

This book is like the Beach Boys but in photographs and not songs. The images convey a simple innocence and enjoyment. The haircuts and clothing takes you back to those easier, less frenetic times.

The poses range from the very formal style of the 1950s, to the informal 'snapshot' from 1979. The models are, for the most part, not the hulks seen in so many American physique photos, but rather more evryday types of guys. The emphasis is on the young, and if you have a hunkering for the blond surfer type, you won't be disappointed.

Well worth buying.

A Must Have for Serious Photography Collectors
You will have the most fun with this volume of Mel Roberts' work, if you pick it up without any expectations. It's been over 20 years since Roberts' work has been available to the public, and the collection here is different than any other collection of his work in the past, which mind you, were put out by the author with whatever funds he had available. This time, the guy's got a small-press publisher behind him footing the bill, so there's a sleekness to the presentation that never existed before.

What I loved the most about this book was not the models, or the settings, though both are beautiful and interesting, but the most intriguing element for me was that Roberts' work seems to have captured an innocence of a "time," a time which will never be again. So many photographers today are trying to photograph that "retro" look, and failing miserably at it. Mel Roberts has done it because he was there doing it, capturing the essence of the 1960s, in the 1960s. Besides, the whole thing is very erotic, a must have for serious collectors. I've already bought 3 prints from the book and plan to buy more! Bravo! to Mel Roberts and whomever (FotoFactory Press) had the inspiration and intelligence to bring this man's work out of the woodwork!

Too General
There are much better books which helps you with your day to day tasks than this book

Would Not Recommend For Sole Source Of Material
This is not the only book you should have! Lots of material considering reference integrity are NOT well cover (1 paragraph). Answers to question are frequently wrong and NOT as well written as the Sybex books. Take your chances here.

Hilfe!

Caution on advice found in this book
The book NATURE'S ULTIMATE ANTI-CANCER PILL: THE IP6 WITH INOSITOL QUESTION AND ANSWER BOOK by Coles and Steinman offers some questionable advice. For example, it indicates there no known side effects from IP6, when iron-anemia is possible outcome since IP6 is a mineral chelator. Furthermore, the authors claim the product is safe for pregnant women and children. Children have need for minerals and IP6 might stunt their growth. Pregnant females must supply minerals for their growing fetus and use of IP6 may result in serious consequences. Beware of the advice in this book. IP6 is a wonderful antioxidant and mineral chelator and has widespread application for cancer, diabetes, heart disease and as an antibiotic, but it should be used for short periods of time, not as a daily supplement. There is scant evidence that one brand of IP6 is superior to another.

Choices for IP-6
I would have to agree with the previous reviewer - the reader from California. The information given in this book IS thorough and comprehensive, yet there is a constant pushing of what seems to be their brand. The site, iHerb, has not only the author's promoted brand but others as well so readers and shoppers can make educated decisions.

Promoting a brand?
Though I agree with the previous reviewers and consider this a valuable book, I take issue with the stress the authors put on only buying the Enzymatic Therapies brand of IP6. Though they profess to have no financial interest in the company, they are so insistent about this that I find it hard to believe. Normally when reporting on research it will be pointed out exactly what kind of substance was used in the research. But they stress it over and over, and even go so far as to cast blatant aspersions on other marketers of IP6, with the warning that you may get sick from using other brands. I investigated this a bit and here's what I found out: Enzymatic Therapies brought some other companies to court for selling IP6, but the judge threw the case out because the others weren't selling a combination capsule of IP6 and inositol like ET was. The source of the IP6 in ET's formulation is, as near as I can tell, the exact same source as that sold by, for example, Jarrow Labs. What's the difference besides the fact that it's sold separately from the inositol? PRICE! You can buy pure IP6 and pure inositol in bulk online and just mix your own, and pay less than a third the cost of the ET brand! I have no financial interest in this, I only buy it for my wife who had breast cancer (and the rest of the family takes it too!)... One problem with so many touted cancer cures is that usually you find that the promoter has a financial ax to grind. This case looks suspicious despite the authors' disclaimer. Too bad.

A good collection of disparate essays
In contrast to the previous rather bitter review, I think this is a very good book and a lot better than the the racism masquerading as science that is the Bell Curve - which Gould has read and demolished.
In terms of factor analysis, I used the Urchin in the Storm to teach factor analysis it's that clear and concise. Stuff the political viewpoint just read some very good essays.

An Urchin in the Storm
An Urchin in the Storm by Stephen Jay Gould is about books and ideas, but more so about writing, thinking and study in method.

An Urchin in the Storm is divided into five different sections. The first two sections of this book group reviews that discuss the irreductibility of history, along the way the pleasures and challenges of contingency, in its two principle domains of life and the earth. The first section on evolution focuses upon structuralist and hisoricist alternatives. While the second, explains nature's complexity, (Evolutionary Theory, Time and Geology).

The third section of this book explores the theory and consequences, both political and intellectual, of biological determinism. The fourth section deals with "Four Biologists." While the fifth works with "In Praise of Reason." As we read on throughout this book, Gould makes his point and scores, as he exposes fallacies, expands on geology, give thought to biological determinism, and gives the reader a clearer picture of evolutionary theory.

This is a fascinating little book, as Gould works through this little tome, like the urchin, always presenting a tough exterior and continues to prickle the enemy.

A very good book of essays about books
For a collection of disparate essays this hangs together in the classic Steve Gould style. If you're a 'fan', this is a book you may have missed, but its definitely a 'must have'

Parody, or just awful?
For a few chapters, I thought this was simply the worst book about baseball I'd ever read. The late genius Prof. Gould seemed less interested in entertaining or informing than in impressing us with obscure allusions and dropping the name of every other genius or celebrity he's ever met. But then it occurred that perhaps Gould was parodying the pompous blowhards he probably spent most of his life enduring in academe. Consider these two sentences from Ch. 8 alone:

"We may, on the rarest of occasions, enjoy the privilege of watching a person who can do something so much better than anyone else on the planet that we have to wonder if he really belongs to our universal tribe of Homo sapiens. I can cite only two such experiences in my previous fifty-seven years of life, both musical: when, in the late 1960s, I heard Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau sing Schubert's Die Schone Mullerin, and even his triple pianissimos penetrated like pinpricks of utter beauty to my seat in the last row of the last balcony of Symphony Hall; and when, two years ago at the Metropolitan Opera, I saw the world's greatest performers in each part boost their combined talents far above the sum of their individual strengths when they sang the first act of Wagner's Die Walkure: Placido Domingo as Siegmund, Deborah Voigt as Sieglinde, and Matti Salminen as Hunding, with James Levine conducting the finest orchestra ever assembled in operatic history."

Phew. Now that's remarkably boring and self-absorbed--but when you imagine an arrogant snob like Frasier Crane delivering those words, it becomes sort of amusing. And could it be that was what Gould was going for? To satirize, rather than nauseate?

Naaaa. This book is not about baseball or much else beside Gould's need to impress us with his Big Brain, Refined Taste, and Fabulous Life (which he remembered in excrucitaing detail). Don't waste your time.

A Brilliant Fan's Final Love Letter to the Game
This is a fan's book, in every sense of the term. Thanks to his writings about baseball in such unlikely places as the New York Review of Books, and his appearance in Ken Burns' documentary about the sport, Stephen Jay Gould's position as one of the premiere intellectuals who also happens to love baseball will forever be secure; this collection of works will keep that legacy alive for a new generation. Because these writings are generated from Gould's own love of the sport, the focus tends heavily toward the two teams he spent most of his life watching--the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. And that's fine, because no other two teams have encompassed the heights of triumph and tragedy this sport has to offer. For the non-scientist, Gould may get a bit technical at times, such as his explanation of why the .400 hitter is as extinct as the dinosaurs, but even this journalism major managed to wade through it all. A passionate lovesong to the sport from a fan who left his seat too soon.

Baseball Stories from a Lifelong Fan
Stephen Jay Gould grew up in New York City as a Yankees' fan during the late forties and into the fifties, a great time to learn to love the game of baseball. For those of us fortunate to grow up during this era many of Gould's stories are familiar yet entertaining from his point of view. Dusty Rhodes' heroics during the '54 Fall Classic and Don Larsen pitching his way to perfection in '56 are two examples. The only drawback to the book from my point of view is the emphasis on why he feels noone will ever hit .400 anymore. I am not a fan of statistics and charts, and a special section is devoted to figures which I realize entertain many baseball fans, but not this one. I prefer stories, and Stephen Jay Gould has provided a number of them for baseball fans to cuddle up with. It's a shame that his life was cut short in May of 2002 from cancer, but he did provide us with this book in addition to his comments on Ken Burns's video history of baseball a few years ago.
