Very Well Done
Mr. Holt has done a wonderful job in describing some of the more esoteric, and personal, aspects of bird hunting. He also has done a good job of giving the reader an understanding of the land and people of Montana. I read this book a few years ago, and will be sending it to more bird-hunting friends this Christmas Whether you are a bird hunter, an admirer of Montana, or a Gonzo outdoorsman, you will enjoy this book.

Excellent taste of western upland bird hunting.
I bought this book 4 years ago when I found out I was moving from VA to Colorado. The author has a wonderful flair for description that rings true to me as a lifelong bird hunter. Unfortunately, the wonderful hunting he describes doesn't happen in Colorado, so it is one of those great books about dream hunts outside my local stomping grounds.

Las Vegas Access
The Access series are very good and the Las Vegas book is a favorite of mine. When ever I go for business or pleasure, I take the current Access along. I have found that with the multitude of changes the earlier editions help to remind me of Casinos and attractions that are no more. As Vegas continues to develope at an extraordinary pace, I find I look forward to the new release more and more.

Exemplary guide book in a soft cover.
Access Las Vegas brings a colorful guide to the subject of the city of light, Las Vegas. With reviews of Hotels and Casinos with resturant ratings as well as a nod to the arts and sciences (Museums), this is one book I will not leave behind when visiting Nevada's most famous city.

Ther are maps that section the city into easy to cover areas and color coding to help distinguish the variety of critiqued locations. Backround and history with many best fo lists by the knowledgable and famous citizens give excellent insights to getting around and geating the most from your visit. Concise examination of the many casino games help the novice may their way through a bewildering array of choices.

All in all perhaps the best book for the money of it's kind. The access line of books are all quite good.

Visual Journey review
I took the time to review this book because I feel strongly that it contains excellent photographs which deserve a wider audience. Michael Smith is one of the best living photographers and a national treasure of the US. He is known well in the photographic community but remains fairly obscure outside this group. I recommend this book to anyone interested in excellent photography.

A stunning collection of outstanding photographs
Michael A. Smith has traveled many miles photographing the land, the cities, and the people across America, and is possibly the greatest photographer of our time. Not only is his subject matter interesting, every picture in this publication reveals his mastery of seeing, composition, and print quality. An excellent book.

My Mother Played the Piano
What an extraordinary book about John William Smith's life. Each chapter is a story taken from his childhood, or as a father or a husband -- but most of all as a Christian man. He tells the good, the bad, the sad and many humorous stories that you'll want to share with your friends immediately or read to a loved one. A very special book -- important lessons that emphasize ways to build character by consistant dicipline and unconditional love -- for ourselves and our children.

The book was very moving. I laughed, cried and learned.
My husband tells me I am one to enlarge a story, If I like something it's not a simple, I liked it. It is usually, I really really loved it....it was soooooo good. In the case of the book entitled, "My Mother Played the Piano.....it was the best book I've ever read.....I really really loved it....it was sooooo good! Not many books can touch your heart and make you a different person when you are finished but this book can and it did. Being a story teller myself it validated what I always tell my children...that every bad situation makes a great story later. I would love to personally e-mail the author to tell him what his book meant to me. I believe this is the closest I'm going to get. This is a book that anyone would enjoy.....but mainly parents. It should be mandatory for every parent to read before having children. Thank you Mr Smith for writing about your memories and allowing us all to be apart of your childhood. Debbie Jones Yakima, WA

Nationalism (Oxford Readers)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (February, 1995)
Authors: John Hutchinson and Anthony D. Smith

Indispensable resource
This is a reader that covers the various theories of nationalism as well as varieties of nationalism itself. This makes it a largely indispensable supplement, handbook and reference work for anyone interested in nationalism. This is particularly true today as the scholarship on this social phenomenon continues to grow unabated, and since it is patently obvious that nationalism hardly seems about to disappear. The reader contains important extracts from the major works on nationalism by some of the most important early theorists such as Renan, Max Weber and Stalin (although the views of Marx and Engels themselves or Lord Acton and Friedrich Meinecke would have been welcome additions) and almost all of the most important contemporary scholars (Gellner, Anderson, Connor, A. Smith, etc.). The texts are well-selected and organized, and it really contributes to making a very complex subject and a daunting field of scholarship seem a little easier to grasp.

comprehensive reader of theories of nationalism
Professors John Hutchinson and Anthony D. Smith, both at the London School of Economics, have put together here a great collection of texts from the major writers on nationalism over the last 100 years. Starting with Ernest Renan, Joseph Stalin and Max Weber, the book also includes extracts from Benedict Anderson, Walker Connor, Partha Chatterjee, Karl Deutsch, Ernest Gellner, Liah Greenfeld, EJ Hobsbawm, Donald Horowitz, Elie Kedourie, Hans Kohn, James Mayall, Tom Nairn, and Anthony Smith himself, in addition to many others. As in Smith's _Nationalism and Modernism_, all perspectives of the field are represented here. There are 49 essays organized into seven chapters, complete with an introduction to each plus notes, a bibliography, information about each author and an index.

This book is a definite must for anyone interested in nationalism.

Examining 3- and 4-dimensional Euclidean spaces
On Quaternions And Octonions: Their Geometry, Arithmetic, And Symmetry is a collaboratively presented treatise by John H. Conway and Derek A. Smith on the geometry of the quaternion and octonion algebras. Examining 3- and 4-dimensional Euclidean spaces, enumerating the corresponding finite group of symmetries, analyzing the arithmetics of quaternions and octonions and much more, this impressive presentation sheds new light on the geometry of complex numbers and is a scholarly addition to Advanced Mathematics reference collections and reading lists.

A model of exposition
John Conway's books are always well written, and this could serve as a model for other mathematics authors. I don't need to know that much about quaternions and octonions, but I found myself working through most of the book and the beautiful mathematics it covers. The only thing that disappoints is the dreadful cover and the difficulty getting hold of a copy in a bookstore. But then I guess Amazon.com exists to help people get their hands on stuff they might never see in a bookstore.

Excellent Book for Amature/Experienced Instrument Builder
As a boy, my father (a sculptor) bought me this book for my birthday. As an adult composer and percussionist, it is still one of my most cherished music-related books and it would make a great coffee table book for anyone (especially musicians!) who wants something truly out of the ordinary.

I have also used it for teaching: a few years ago I taught at the Walden School for young composers in New Hampshire and taught a class for kids where they built some of the simpler instruments in the book such as the Funnelodeon and the Copper Maracas. They also built Whirly Tubes out of long pieces of light blue swimming pool tubing. Of course, the kids had a great time and some even said it was their favorite class. Therefore, I think this book would be useful for music teachers who teach children and want to try something fun.

Many of the instruments in this book can be built using items found at hardware stores. Many of the more complex instruments are reminiscent of instruments built by the American composer Harry Partch and are also similar to discontinued (yet amazing!) instruments made by the J. C. Deagan company at the beginning of the twentieth century.

This book would make a great gift for anyone curious about different tunings and for someone who wants to try them out on an acoustic instruments, for percussionists, composers, wind players, string players, or even retired folks who have a little extra time and like working with their hands. There are mostly percussion instruments, but also some stringed and wind instruments as well. The directions, photos and diagrams are clear, and overall, this book is just a lot of fun to have around.

Great Basic Reference.
A very useful and practical handbook for beginning instrument builders such as I. The book is organized into six sections; wood, wood and metal, metal, skin, plastic, and glass. Mostly percussion designs, but also includes a few simple string instruments and an organ pipe. Instructions and designs for 50 instruments, some traditional but mostly original variations by the authors. Also includes frequency charts, some discussion of just intonation, a great bibliography for further reading and a list of suppliers for things like gourds and bamboo.
