CHILLER OF A THRILLER!
One of the most fascinating aspects of this novel, was not its sheer page-turning power, but the way the author introduced the weather as an additional character. I read this book last summer and literally found myself shivering from the cold that the Greenland setting induced. Would make a great Harrison Ford movie!

living in pergatory
What a wonderful treat in finding this book! I have worked in the human services field for about 6 years, and this is the first book that I have found that speaks to me of the humanity and experience of an individual who was institutionalized for a majority of his life and his de-institutionalization. John's story almost exactly the same as at least a half-dozen men I have come to know in my work in the field. More books like this one, please!

Excellent Book for World Intercessors
This book will deepen any Christian intercessor's prayer life. The book proceeds through regions of the world and gives information on the unreachd people groups that live in these regions. The pictures will help you feel compassion for these peoples. I have used this book for a year now and I find that it has made my prayer life much more focussed on the nations. The prayer requests are specific to each group of people and make praying more accurate. If you desire to glorify God through prayer, this is the book for you!

A Very Important Anthology
This anthology is as exciting and interesting as McDowell's M and W; Stroud's Quest; Crary's The New Wittgenstein; and Brewer's Perception and Reason. This anthology contains new material from some top-flight folks in the field.

M and W is an important text; it engages, as very few contemporary philosophy of mind texts have, the serious and neglected dualisms of conceptual scheme and empirical content; spontaneity and receptivity, which are, needless to say, Kantian concerns. McDowell is a proponent of conceptual content (within the realm of a 'minimal empiricism') and appeals to Kant and Wittgenstein to buttress his descriptive approach to philosophical inquiry. M and W has some brillant and evocative insights (with more than a few expensive obscurities), and some of McDowell's metaphors are splendid indeed, such as the teetering 'seesaw' and the 'sideways on picture.' Of course, it attempts to negotiate Kantian insights concerning human cognition with certain contemporary discussions on the Myth of the Given (Sellars), The Third Dogma (Davidson)and the Tribunal of Experience (Quine), and Rorty's attack on epistemology.

This anthology could offer disenchanted graduate students a reason to complete doctoral studies in philosophy. It is that rich and exciting. I am seriously nervous with glee (nerd alert!).

The most important and interesting articles here are: M. Friedman, "Exorcising the Philosophical Tradition" (previously published); R. Pippin, "Leaving Nature Behind" (on subjectivism); B. Stroud, "Sense Experience and the Grounding of Thought" (always a pleasure to read Barry); R. Brandom, "Non-Inferential Knowledge, Perceptual Experience..."; G. McCulloch, "Phenomenological Externalism" (see A. Brueckner and/or K. Falvey on this topic); H. Putnam, "McD's Mind and McD's World" (also see his Three-Fold Cord on McD and his soon to be released UW lectures from Columbia UP); C. Larmore, "Attending to Reasons."

This is my highest recommendation.

Comprehensive Commercial Focus on Real Estate
I took Jack Corgel's course in the Hotel School at Cornell. We used the third edition of this text, and it covered the spectrum of concepts for a basic introduction to real estate investment. Even though the course focused on commercial real estate, I found the concepts have helped me determine whether I have made good choices in residential real estate, as well. The best aspect of the book (and the course) was applying a discounted cash flow analysis to particular properties. As a method to assess the financial viability of a property by analyzing the rent, tax, depreciation and other effects, the discounted cash flow analysis helped me feel much more confident in my real estate investments.

The book covers four basic areas: investment principles like net present value, real estate markets, mortgage financing, and legal aspects of real estate. Although not flashy with lots of pictures, the essential concepts and methods are thoughtfully explained and applied. I highly recommend this book as a reference to keep on your shelf to refer to periodically if engaged in the acquisition of real estate.

Reliability, Maintainability and Risk: Practical Methods for Engineers
Published in Paperback by Butterworth-Heinemann (December, 1997)
Author: David John Smith
Amazon base price: $52.95
Average review score:

An ideal guide to the field of reliability for engineers.
This is the 5th edition of DJ Smith's excellent book on reliability in the real world. Having worked in this field for a number of years, I can honestly say that Mr. Smith has provided a perfect means of understanding the principles behind basic reliability calculations, in a way that is neither condescending nor unneccesarily complex. I recommend this book in the strongest possible terms to readers interested in gaining a greater understanding of the world of reliability engineering without having to trawl through pages of postgraduate mathematics.

A Compelling and Provocative Page Turner
Again, this writer turns the written page into an adventure for the reader, filled with action, treachery, and suspense. Yet still the story reads in a very human and literary voice, with great description. The plot is complex, and the characters are dynamic. I eagerly anticipate the arrival of his new books 'White Lie' and 'Saigon Express' (currently only available in Britain) to the U.S.

The Roots of Spiritual Care and Spiritual Health
THE ROOTS OF HEALING is a book that explores how the nature of our soul infuses health and well-being. It is a series of questions and answers provided by leading edge thinkers who understand the power of spirit to heal. This book reminds us of our true nature. More importantly, we are reminded of the roots of healing itself - our soul. When our soul experiences well-being, the possibility for physical, psychological, social, and spiritual unity becomes an expression and extension of the unmanifest becoming manifest. Thanks to all who contributed to the future of medicine. Samuel Oliver, author of, WHAT THE DYING TEACH US: LESSONS ON LIVING.

For lovers of Sayles' work this book is essential
If you're new to Sayles' movies or a long time fan, this book is a must. Gavin Smith asks probing and significant questions and Sayles provides insights about himself that are refreshingly matter of fact. The book is organized chronologically and examines each of Sayles' films. I have only seen Eight Men Out and Lone Star as of now but after this book I'm trying to see as many as I can. I've seen Lone Star twice and I'm going to buy the video. I rank it as one of my 10 all-time favorite movies because it is brilliant on so many levels.
