A Story of Faith and Family
This is an extraordinary and well written little book that celebrates faith and family. The setting is in the early days of World War II before the US gets involved. In 1941 a missionary wife and her six children receive permission to travel to Africa to be with their beloved father. En route the Germans sink their ship, the Zamzam. But despite continuous shelling, not one soul is lost! Mother and her six children board a lifeboat that sinks beneath them. 'Just remember that Jesus loves you,' she comfortingly tells her children. I highly recommend this book. Well written with great narrative. You will not be disappointed.

Too Hilarious!
This book is very amusing....and timely as Mrs. Miller competes for presidency with Gore and Bush. It is too bad it is fiction. Though it is a book of humor it does make you think if some of her ideas would actually work.

Its a Must Buy
I have used the very fine Pimsleur course for another language (Hebrew) but, in looking for a course that costs a fraction of the Pimsleur price, I struck gold with the Berlitz Basic Spanish. There are 24 lessons, each about 7 minutes long. The lessons are divided into scenes on three audio tapes. The lessons are taught entirely in Spanish. It is amazing how well this works by putting the conversation in context and by using a guidebook. By going through each lesson several times and doing the exercises in the book, you learn Spanish in an easy and enjoyable manner, Having used Pimsleur, I believe that dollar for dollar, the Berlitz method compares well. You can't go wrong with either {Pimsleur or Berlitz) but, for less than 30 bucks, your money is very well spent with the Berlitz basic Spanish. The big difference between these two fine methods (Berlitz & Pimsleur) is the following: (1) Pimsleur has a series of 32 longer lessons in which the language is taught using both English and the language you are learning on the tape. The Pimsleur lessons are about a half hour long. (2) The series of Berlitz lessons are about 7 or so minutes long and no English is spoken. The accompanying book provides English translation in marginal notes for new words that are introduced into the vocabulary. Both programs are effective but Berlitz is a great bargain.

Lauren Abbot could be seen by others as having ice in her veins. She has been hurt in the past and has no intention of letting herself get involved with any man ever again. Lauren throws herself into her work as a top notch journalist. Only Lauren never planned on meeting a man like Nick. Nick Strata just happens to be on the same plane as Lauren. They are, in fact, sitting next to each other when the plane crashes into the water. Lauren does not believe it when she is told that Nick died while playing hero to the others on the plane. And it seems that Lauren is right and that Nick is not dead, but he has no intention of letting anyone know that he is alive. Nick needs Lauren's help to catch a criminal. Lauren tells herself that she is only agreeing so that she can be the first to break the story. The attraction between Nick and Lauren is there, but so is the hurt that Lauren has suffered in the past.
The sexual tension between Nick and Lauren added with the intrigue and mystery of the danger that surround them makes this a good story.

A Delightful Version of the World-Famous Pippi Longstocking!
This small book, Pippi Longstocking's After-Christmas Party was a joy to read. I reccommend it for small children as a Christmas treat or for those grown-up Pippi Longstocking fans who have been longing for another book about the famous redhead.

Interesting book on early Southern California skiers
This is an interesting book on the earlier skiers in Southern California (mostly in the early 20th century). Did you know that ski jumping at Big Pines (Wrightwood) was the most popular venue in the 1930s? That skiers would race down the slopes of San Gorgonio in minutes?
The book has lots of pictures and maps to follow the story. Lots of interviews with early skiers. Well worth getting if you're interested in our skiing past.

A Good View of British Royalty
The Queen and Di is a good source of information about British Royalty--their day to day lives, their likes and dislikes. I appreciate that the focus is not entirely on the late and former Princess of Wales, but includes historical backgound as well as facts concerning more recent events in the lives of the royal family.

INGRID - THE VOICE OF COMPASSION
Ingrid Newkirk's "You Can Save the Animals" is a must read if you care about justice and the hidden secrets of animal abusers. "You Can Save the Animals" allows us to take a look behind those closed doors to examine our ethics and morals. Ingrid brings knowledge of animal abuse to those uninformed, she exposes the facts many animal abusers wish to silence. We can ask ourselves, who and why would some wish the book not be read? What would they have to gain or lose? Sue Schumacher

Thank god its back . . .
This is one of those books that falls out of print and causes mass panic in graduate student communities as we find ourselves hunting for copies with on-line rare book search engines with no hope for success. Can't find it used when no one will let go of it. Saints be praised, its back. Kaplan's essays 'demonstratives' and 'afterthoughts' are classics and need to be studied by anyone interested in the golden triangle of philosophy (phil. language, mind, and epistemology). Kit Fine's essay on de re modality is excellent, and with articles by Peacocke, Wettstein, Almog, and a host of other friends of Kaplan, no entry will fail to repay serious attention. Do not miss the opportunity to purchase this book.
