Great story in a well-worn setting;(post-apocalyptic world.)
I really enjoyed this story as I have others of Ingrid's. The story and the characters remain the meat of the book, instead of incidental 'buy me' sex scenes as so many sci-fi writers (or their publishers) seem to feel are required. There are some good twists to the well-worn setting of a post-apocalyptic world (e.g. the mutations being part of purposeful experiments as opposed to random consequences of the nuclear winter) as well as very interesting character development and story line. However, the ending seemed a little rushed (thus the four stars). Though there were obvious strings left dangling for its sequel(s), too many subplot conflicts were resolved quickly and neatly. Still a great 'read' and I plan to read the sequel!

Swedish mittens
These mittens are beautiful. The patterns are a bit vague, and the "adult" mittens turned out very small so you have to adjust accordingly. Nevertheless, they are by far the cutest mittens I have ever seen; I strongly recommend this book for more experienced knitters.

A young Jewish girl comes to terms with her identity.
I thought Once I Was A Plum Tree was a very sensitively written book, dealing with the child who feels different from the others in her milieu and must find her own sense of identity without many supports around her. The characterizations rang true, and the relationships between people were finely drawn. It also addressed a widely shared situation: that of the Jewish child whose parents are not terribly religiously observant, but who still knows that she is Jewish and must define what that means in America. It was a very satisfying read.

beautiful story
Beautifully illustrated story of a new born and a the brother's feelings. Gave my child a view into another country's customs when a baby is born. There is only a sentence per page for those children who have a hard time sitting still being read to.

Concise and pithy
Anyone interested in self-publishing a book can learn a lot from Ingrid M.E. Hicks' Publish it Yourself! The "ABCs". Within these 68 pages is everything you need to know to self-publish a book. Hicks has managed a coup by having her forward written by Dan Poynter, the guru of the self-publishing business.
If the how-to books have you feeling overwhelmed and slightly nauseous about venturing into this field, Hicks makes the process seem relatively painless. That's the beauty of this little book. It tells you what you need to know, then lets you research each step. Each chapter gives tips and how-tos that range from completing the manuscript to building a publishing company to printing, promotion and, that goal of all writers, book sales.
This book is basic, to the point and does not have any superfluous information...it's all captured for you. All you need to do now is finish your manuscript, buy a copy of Publish it Yourself! The "ABCs" and get ready for the ride!

Santiago a great story
This book is a wonderful story about a little boy from Mexico and his loyal friend, Andreas, who are looking for a ways to help support their families who are in great need. Andreas is the risk taker while Santiago exerts some reticence about some rather wild ideas that come to mind. Some admirable character traits come to the forefront when a "treasure" is discovered in the old defunct mine near the boy's village.

Great for rhythm section players !
There are many books about improvising jazz and the harmonies involved. This book has something extra -- coverage of the improvisational interactions that occur while playing with the other muscicians. There is a whole discussion of the rhythm section performing one large "solo" during the entire peice, underneath the soloist. This really spoke to my "bass player" self.

Demian, in my own words
I feel that the novel Demian was a highly intellectual novel and very enlightening! It's like no other book I've read in which it's not your usual story of a boy growing up. It's about a boy growing up and questioning his faith with the help of a boy named Demian who is a classmate. Emil, the main character feels that Demian is the image in which he wants to be. He fantisizes about this image and will do anything to be it. Demian helps Emil to break from his contious mind and enter his subconcious. It is a wonderful book and I highly recommend in to any philosophy fans, or anybody at all.

another chance
Ingrid's book shows how it is possible to teach children the fine art of quilting. For quilters with children Ingrid proves that they are almost never too young begin to quilt. The book shows some of the templates used in the class with her students, and some of the designs her children come up with, reflecting their imaginations and quirky personalities. It is full of pictures, designs and examples of things to do with children in the art of quilting. The Small Folk Quilting group has since grown; the children in the photographs have grown up, and many of them still quilt avidly. This book gives quilting another chance and way of teaching quilting to children, in a time when the art was almost lost and no longer being taught. It is simple to understand and very approachable. Definately something to have on your shelf.

Glamour with a touch of spice
I should start by saying that this review could be slightly bias, as Ellen Von Unwerth remains my favourite photographer. Generally, the combination of the large size of the photos, printed to the very edges of the pages, and a seemingly different texture ont he paper makes for an incredibly attractive book. Then to top it off, the book is packed full of some of the most interesting black and white photos I have seen so far. The photos are a mix of models in hotel rooms, and people on the streets, with all the glamour and darkness of the subjects blending into one another really well. The contrast in the photos is remarkable, and yet in some photos there seems to be an uncanny lack of depth. The definition and detail is fantastic, but as the background becomes darker, it can almost seem to disappear. It is a great book to sit back with at night, and have a few glasses of good red wine.
