Amazing Travels AND Illustrations!
The Amazing Travels of Ingrid our Turtle is a classic children's book. Not only is it wonderfully illustrated but it tells the story of an unlikely traveller. For all those that love to travel or for those who have never looked beyond their backyard, this is a truly charming book.

Unusually moving poetry
This is wonderful poetry-moving and unforgettable. The two long, sectioned poems, "Learning the Mother Tongue" and "Questions of Mercy," explore what it means to have a German heritage in the United States. The poet's reflections and experiences as she explores and assimilates her late parents' life stories-they were raised in German-speaking families, although her mother was born in Michigan and her father in Chile-are fascinating. The elegiac tone of the poems makes them radiate a soft glow, even while they deal with tough and complex issues. The poet's active pursuit of knowledge of German culture and language is balanced by her memories of growing up within a translated culture.

The universal meaning of "family" merges with this particular family in these powerful poems, but they also engage the hard questions of guilt and innocence in World War II. I would say if you're buying one poetry collection this year, make it this one-you won't be sorry.

Storyline ....
Since Amazon didn't post an editorial review, here's the description from the back of the book to help you decide if this book is for you: "Death stalked the Dominion Knight from the Emperor's Palace to a world on the brink of its prophesied age of destruction ... death by laser was just one of the ways in which Dominion Knight Jack Storm's unknown enemies were trying to eliminate him. And Jack was only one of the many targets on someone's worlds-spinning hit list. Assassins had alredy struck in the very heart of the Emperor's palace, bringing down a prominent broadcaster, and casting suspicion on Amber. Gifted -- or cursed -- with incredible psychic abilities, Amber had been programmed to kill with her mind. Yet she didn't know what secret code would key her to destory -- or who her targets would be. And only on the distant world of Bythia -- where the alien Thraks were seeking to undermine Dominion rule, while the natives prepared for the long prophesied Third Age, when the Holy Fire would bring either rebirth or total annihilation -- would Jack and Amber find the hope of answers and the nameless opponents they each sought ..."

A Woman's Perspective
This book was excellent for women of any age! I truly related to the scenarios that Ingrid paints, and she has a true knack for writing in a spiritual and uplifting way. As a widow of a pastor, she had a lot to say in regard to dealing with attitude on the single woman's part, the married woman's, and the widow or divorcee. I really feel that this book encouraged and made me rediscover my self-worth and sense of independence. Not only that, but it gave me a challenge on how to focus on work and my life differently. I strong recommend this book to those who are going through any phase of life!

Different Perspectives on Wavelets: American Mathematical Society Short Course January 11-12, 1993 San Antonio, Texas (Proceedings of Symposia in Ap)
Published in Hardcover by American Mathematical Society (1994)
Author: Ingrid Daubechies
Amazon base price: $36.00
Average review score:

Wavelets:pure and applied.
This book consists of a selection of papers on wavelet themes. It came out at the same time of the CBMS lecture series of Daubechies, the one that turned into her book, 'Ten Lectures on Wavelets', which was issued in the SIAM series. The present book is a collective effort, and it is a volume in a very distinguished AMS book series. The subject of wavelts is special in the way it draws on a variety of areas within math, but even more unique in its versatility and its sucessful applications. Two general applied areas are signal processing and image compression. The mathematics behind this is timeless, and is highlighted in the book: Individual chapters by Y. Meyer, by Coifmann and Wickerhauser, and Wickerhauser(wavelet packets), D. Donoho(signals, densities and spectra from indirect and noisy data), and others make the book a landmark in the subject. It actually serves as an invitation to these exciting and related subareas of math.

If I could write......
I happened upon this book accidentally, and it immediately became one of my top five favorite books. Ms. Hill has an extraordinary gift of language. In this collection of short stories, she uses a variety of topics and settings, but she makes you feel as though that person were writing it and not a mother of twelve who lives in Iowa (per her bio)!! My favorites are the stories set in Louisiana-they have a depth and sadness and humor that is as palpable as water in Louisiana air. I do not feel that I can do Ms. Hill justice in this review, but the language, as I mentioned is phenomenal...Ms. Hill has an incredible talent for the short story. This is a book that I read over and over again.

Stunning illustrations! A must for Pippi and Astrid fans!
I bought this book only for the illustrations. In fact, I gave hardly any consideration to what the writing would be like, but both writing and illustrations were a treat.

First, I'll go to the illustrations because they are the most novel thing about this book. This is the first Pippi Longstocking book every to be published in the US with the original illustrations by the (obviously) talented Ingrid Vang Nyman. Her pictures are amazingly bright and cheery. Great amounts of reds and yellows, blues, and greens were used. It doesn't seem like there was a dull color on her pallate. The colors on the cover are pretty much the only colors used throughout the book and the result is breathtaking. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying this is the Sistine Chapel or anything, but the pictures are so simple looking, clean cut, and almost "primitive" (that isn't really the proper word I'm looking for, but anyway...). I was persistently amazed on Ingrid Nyman's attention to detail. Her scenes focus on the main characters and there actions, but if you look around the scenes, the detail is wonderful!

Most of Astrid Lindgren's writing in the book won't be new to her fans, but the way she changes it is very pleasing. It is just perfect for young readers. I know that this is minute point that most people probably won't notice, but I loved the way Astrid Lindgren pulled the story from its original books into present tense. I felt much more inside the story this way and this shows her mastery and skill at writing for children of all ages.

This is must-have for Astrid Lindgren and Pippi Longstocking fans and perfect for those kids whom you want to know Pippi. At the moment, there are two ways in book-form to introduce kids to Pippi, the "Pippi Longstocking Storybooks" from Viking Press and this book. Although the intentions of Viking are admirable (indeed, the way they handled it is excellent), it doesn't fit for the age bracket that this book targets. Now, you can start children off on this book, lead them to The Pippi Longstocking Storybooks, and they're well on their way to reading the three classics!

Polymathic Wonder
This catalogue, which documents an exhibition held at the University of Chicago Library two years ago, serves as a fine introduction to Kircher, as well as an important constellation of figures at the heart of seventeenth century Baroque Rome. Kircher, one of the most prodigious of seventeenth century polymaths, sat at the helm of the Jesuit Collegio Romano and had connections with the likes of Galileo and Borromini. Kircher created endlessly absorbing, vertiginous works on a variety of topics, including magic lanterns, Chinese wonders, Egyptian hieroglyphs, the Temple of Solomon, the Tower of Babel and music. The catalogue has clear, but reduced, reproductions of the etched illustrations from several of these works. In the accompanying essay, the author does a fine job of illuminating the many strands of Kircher's work, providing numerous insights into Jesuit/Baroque science and politics, as well as seventeenth century art and architecture. The catalogue certainly makes one wish for a full scale study of Kircher in the near future.

Sam is a one man charmer
Sam is one of the sensitive 90s male wrapped in a macho cop's body. The sparks between him and Audra are the hottest I've read. I love both of them and have read it 12 times!
