One the best historical documentaries on Wallace and Bruce
This book remains one of my all time favorites right up there with Les Miseables and the Forsythe Saga; my 1883 edition published by John Wurtele Lovell in New York has 652 pages of very small print but it will be well worth a third reading. The historical detail in the footnotes is as interesting as the main story; e.g., referring to a shattered tower of the castle of Lammington a footnote reads, "The ruins of this tower are still visible; and near to them the people of this country point out the place where Wallace encamped his brave army". I had difficulty relating the movie, "Braveheart", with Jane Porter's account of Wallace and Bruce, and favor Porter's version of the relationship between Wallace and Bruce. During the second reading I was more aware of all the embracing and weeping by the cast of characters as portrayed by Porter; it seemed a little unreal and overdone, but she calls her novel a "romance" so she is forgiven. I have shared this book with many of my friends and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone from 9 yrs of age to 90.

A good read...Historically more accurate than Braveheart...
I read this book twice while I was in school, and now that I'm a History major, I've come to appreciate it even more. The story is descriptive, satisfying, and faithful to the memories of Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland, and Sir William Wallace.

While not perfect historically, it is much closer to what actually occurred than the events as shown in Mel Gibson's BRAVEHEART. Perhaps someone should use SCOTTISH CHIEFS as a basis.

William Wallace and Robert the Bruce
"The Scottish Chiefs" is a classic adventure tale, told in the style of Sir Walter Scott's "Rob Roy." The National Hero of Scotland, William Wallace, gets his story told with a heavy emphasis on romance and drama.

Those seeking a book version of "Braveheart" may be disappointed, as the story is quite different. The William Wallace of "The Scottish Chiefs," like the historical William Wallace, is a castle dwelling nobleman who surrenders his fortunes to fight for Scotland. The writing style is thick, and should be familiar to readers of this genre. "The Scottish Chiefs" is a huge, heavy book with a plot that unfolds at a patient pace.

This edition of "The Scottish Chiefs" contains illustrations by N.C. Wyeth, and acclaimed illustrator of Children's books and the father of artist Andrew Wyeth. The paintings are all direct scenes from the book, and capture the spirit of the adventure in fine detail.

First Roberts book, won't be last
This is my first Nora Roberts and it won't be the last! I have been reading romance for 15 years but have always been avoiding her as she seems to come out with more sequels and series than anybody that I know of. Like some, I didn't know this is the continuation of the "Night Tales" series and read it first. So I am off to look for the first 4 stories that preceded this.

The tension between Ally and Jonah was palpable from their first encounter. The latter is the kind of to-die-for hero that romance readers want for themselves - chivalrous, caring and sexy to the tips of his toes! Ally is oh-so-serious, long-legged and off-limits to Jonah, but he just can't seem to help himself. As a rule, he swears off cops and commitment. When it comes to Ally, however, his opinions and pre-conceptions are thrown out the window.

The romantic suspense works well in this instalment. One also encounters characters from the previous offerings in a Sunday barbecue, which is fairly reminiscent of "A Game of Chance" by Linda Howard, having the similar get-together theme in its story, being the last in its series.

A Fun and Exciting read!
"Night Shield" is the 5th book in the "Night Tales" series and it is great!
Jonah Blackhawk owns a string of successful nightclubs in Denver. He has made something out of his life after a tough childhood because of one cop who never gave up on him, Boyd Fletcher (Night Shift). Jonah feels that he is forever in Boyd's debt for saving him from the streets, so when Boyd asks Jonah for help solving a case, Jonah cannot refuse. It appears that thieves responsible for a growing number of high-end burglaries are using Jonah's club to find their victims. Jonah is prepared to deal with this, but he isn't prepared for the Detective assigned to the case, gorgeous Allison Fletcher, Boyd's daughter.
Ally goes undercover at the nightclub, but working in such close proximity with Jonah causes all kinds of sparks to fly. Things between these two heat up fast, and though Jonah does not want to disrespect Boyd, he finds Allison irresistible. This romance is sexy and fun.
Ally and Jonah fall head over heels in love, but before they can find happiness with each other they must survive an encounter with a desperate and dangerous madman!
This book contains a perfect blend of steamy romance and suspense, woven into an original and exciting plot. "Night Shield" is fun-filled and fast-paced, with well-developed and likeable characters. A family BBQ provides the reader a chance to visit with the characters from the previous "Night Tales" stories, which is a special treat. I guarantee that this book will not disappoint!

Snappy and Sexy, this is Nora Roberts at her best!
Ally and Jonah remind me alot of Dallas and Roarke from JD Robb's "IN DEATH" Series books. However, Night Shield is perfect for those who want a taste of the JD Robb books without all the darkness of blood and gore.

I L-O-V-E-D this book! This book covered more action and romance than some full length novels I've read. There were no wasted words and fillers. Everytime Ally was around Jonah, you could almost see the sparks fly with the snappy comebacks and the body heat they generated. I'll have to read it again, this time to remember some of the clever dialogue.

I always feel cheated, like I got short sheeted or got only half a meal leaving me still hungry when I read books of this length but not so with Night Shield. When I finished this book, I felt full and satisfied like I got a 5 course meal. Night Shield is Nora Roberts at her best and is now one of my favorite romances. I can't recommend this book enough to anyone who wants to read a sexy romance with clever dialogue and action.

I LOVE everything by Nora Roberts - GREAT bathtub book.
This series of three books about three sisters was the first set of Nora Roberts books I ever read. I fell instantly in love with the characters, the setting and the story line. I was sad to see the end of this book and immediately began looking for more Nora Roberts books.

If you enjoy reading books about women who overcome their self doubts and many obstacles to become successful in their own way and content with their life, this book (and the others in the trilogy)is one you should read. It is also a romance novel full of the realistic ups and downs that many relationships suffer.

Nora reminds us success is not always monetary, that it is important to have love and many obstacles can be overcome.

love this book
This is the book that introduced me to Nora Roberts, and I've been a big fan ever since. This is the second in the Dream series (and I recommend all of the titles -- it's my favorite series to date) and it's my favorite of the Dream series. Whenever Nora Roberts makes a series, the formula is typically one sibling who is very cautious, who has been hurt before, one sibling who is on the wild side with a voracious sexual appetite, and one is sensible and a tad shy. This one is about the sibling who is very cautious; smart in business, not so daft with her emotions. It's this sibling who I always like best.

In sum, read the series. But start with Margo ("Daring to Dream") so you don't go out of order.

A book that makes your heart warm
This is the first dream trilogy that i've read. But i can't wait to read all of them. i love strong-willed and intelligent heroines. And Kate is the very type of heroine that i've always wanted to encounter in romance novels. She is indepedent, intelligent, and sweet. too independent to pass her own problems to Byron at first. But Byron is so much Southern gentleman that he never turns a blind eye on Kate's troubles. And i like the way that Byron fell in love with Kate who is not stunningly beautiful.

a standard novel, but with wonderful charcters
Have you ever read a novel about the intrigues behind the scenes of TV world? Well, the plot of Private Scandals follows the same cliches. However, Ms. Roberts' way of handling characters make the reading of Private Scandals worth your while. Angela Perkins is your standard "old star", she's beautiful (but aging), successful and hard as nails. Deanna Reynolds is the proverbial rising star. She's fresh, caring, smart and pretty too boot. This is not the case of "Something about Eve", but the other way around. Finn Riley is the very sexy journalist caught in the web (an echo of Murphy Brown's Peter). The plots takes us trough the rivalry between those two strong women, with an extra twist of a crazed stalker obsessed with Deanna. This novel is not quite up to Nora Roberts usual standards, but it makes for a few hours of great fun.

Wonderful Ending!
This book is a very well written murder mystery mixed with romance that we love Nora Roberts for! Deanna Reynolds and Angela Perkins are basically in competition. Deanna was a news reporter who then turned to talk show host to replace Angela's spot after turning Angela's job offer down. Something Angela never forgets. You fall in love with Deanna and she manages to find love along the way herself. She does have somebody stalking her all the way through. The ending was great as I didn't know for a minute the "who done it " and was very surprised. This was a great book and truly Nora at her best!

My Favorite
Of all the books Nora Roberts has written this one is by far my favorite. Deanna Reynolds is a reporter trying to make her way into her own talk show. Finn Riley is a reporter who travels the world to get the latest scoop. Deanna finds herself being stalked, with Finn by her side to help her through it they embark on a journey of murder and deceit. With all the twists and turns you find yourself anticipating how they will catch Deanna's stalker while discovering each other. They manage to do it with only a few bumps along the way. I would give this book 7 stars if I could.

Way below Nora's usual standard
I ordered this book after reading all of the high praise here, but I just can't agree with them. The one thing that I've loved about all of Nora's books is that there is always one part of the characters that you can identify with. They're human, they're believable, and you care what happens to them. And that's what I found lacking in these stories. I found the characters dull and boring, sometimes even laughable (Night Shadow with its Batman-like figure). The stories were tedious and predictible (the last one being the best of the lot). Since they are by Nora Roberts, Night Tales is of better quality than most romance novels out there, but I've been spoiled by her better efforts. Skip this collection and go straight to Night Shield.

A few reviewers mentioned that these resembled the J.D. Robb books. I've never cared for those (too dark) which is probably why I didn't like these.

short but sweet
I enjoy reading Nora Roberts, but as a few others have noted these stories were very similar and too short. This book has 4 "mini-novels" in them that are very enjoyable. The characters all are connected, and I like to read about each character in his or her own situation and experiences. However, as soon as one gets aquainted with the character, it is time to stop reading because the story is over. I also have Night Shield, but haven't read it yet. I hope it is a little longer.

Fabulous book!
Everyone who is at all a fan of romance or romantic suspense knows how popular Nora Roberts is. Her books sell for a reason. I think this series is Nora at her best. All 4 of the books are filled with the strong characters, sexual tension, and suspenseful moments that make her such a good writer. I also like having all the related books published together in one package.
Another thing that makes this series unique to me is how each of the books has a common element: the night, but still manages to be fundamentally different too. The first, Night Shift, is pretty standard romantic suspense, but it is also well written. Night Shadow is more fantasy with some supernatural elements thrown in. Night Shade, the third and my favorite of the series, has the most fleshed out characters in my opinion. The clash between the two main characters is what makes this story work. Night Smoke, the last of the stories, is more a classic case of rich girl meets working class boy. Nora adds suspense and good dialogue to raise it above the average romance. Be warned though. The subject matter IS a little dark in these novels. They are grittier than standard romance novels. If you are looking for light fluff, you might want to try some of her other novels. But if you are looking for good romantic suspense, you can't go wrong here.

Two good stories about two great sisters
Lilah and Suzanna was a quick read. I must say, I think I liked Suzanna's story better. I did not read the first book "Catherine and Amanda" before I read this one, so I don't know if I missed something or not. Suzanna and Holt are great together and her kids are pretty cute, too. Not to mention her dog Fred and Aunt Coco. Never a dull moment in the Calhoun house, especially when great-aunt Colleen comes to visit. This book will keep you occupied for at least 2 days, if not more. I can hardly wait to read her other books!!!

A fun, fast, easy read!!!!
"Lilah and Suzanna" were two good books in one great-to-carry volume. I must say I liked Suzanna's story a lot better. She seemed to me like a really great person, and so did her kids and her man Holt. Never a dull moment in the house with four sisters. Catherine and Amanda are great additions to these 2 stories. I wish I had read the other 2 books first. I think I spoiled my own surprise!!!! Light, easy reading. Nora Roberts is one of the best!!!!

Enchanting
The 2-book series of the Calhoun sisters was wonderful. I was so involved in reading both books that I couldn't put them down. I loved the way the Nora Roberts wrote and kept the reader so involved in all the characters. She made each women so dynamic in their own way and the men in the lives that fit each personality. I was so interested in reading each life and seeing how they each fit together and worked together to end the books. Great Job!

Yet Another Treasure from Nora Roberts
Many people have said that this is a re-issue of some earlier stories, but I had never read them and I am so glad that they have been published again. I read "Considering Kate" shortly after it came out and, at the time, wondered about Robert's two passing characters, Bannion and Davidov. From the way they were described, there seemed to be so much more behind their story and we definitely get the best of it in Reflections and Dreams. The first part of this book the story of Lindsay Dunne and introduces us to Ruth Bannion in the process. The second tells the heart-warming story of Ruth and Nick. I lean more towards Roberts's mix of mystery and suspense, but this is definitely one of her best romances.

Lighter Romance, but Wonderful
I think Nora Roberts writes wonderful, true to life books. I find that most of her books depict emotions very well and that I am able to easily place myself in the character's position (even if I don't have ballet experience). I also like how Nora Roberts has trilogies and series that build upon each other so that I am able to revisit favorite characters through other novels.

These two stories are right up there with previous experiences reading Nora Roberts books. In other words, I enjoyed them very much.

I particularly liked the drive that Lindsay shows in the first story. I admired her strength as a woman. I appreciated Seth and how much he added to Lindsay's life.

I have to admit though, of the two stories, the second was my favorite. The strong willed, tempermental Davidov appealed to me, as did Ruth who didn't back down from what she wanted.

Because these are two stories bundled into one, they are shorter than many of Nora Roberts novels. This limited the depth of character that is typical of Nora Roberts longer novels. However, just because I would catagorize this as a lighter romance as compared to her longer novels does not mean I don't like this book. I enjoyed both stories a lot.

Reflections and Dreams
Another great book by Nora Roberts. I really like the way she makes her characters so believable and enjoyable. In this book it is about some of the same characters that she shared with us in Considering Kate. I am involved with dance with my daughter so I found it interesting to be let in on what it is like in a big dance company along with the romance. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys dance and loves to read. Nora Roberts is one of my favorite authors and she never disappoints me. She's the best.

True Nora Roberts!
The MacGregors-Alan-Grant was a good book. I have to say the first story was very boring, but I gave it 4 stars because of "One Man's Art." Grant and Gennie were great!!! I agree with the first review: Grant's eyes were brown in one story and deep green in the next. Bear in mind that those two stories were written years ago, and were done separately. I have not read the first book "Serena and Caine" as of yet. I expect it will be very good.

loved it!
Nora Roberts is my favorite author. I have read almost every book she has written, but my favorite stories are the ones about the MacGregors. I buy the book, and then can't put it down until I've finished it. I can't wait until the next story of the huge MacGregor family comes out, especially the story of The MacGregor himself, Daniel. Ms. Roberts never put this family to rest. My other favorite character is Eve Dallas. Hopefully she will remain a cop for a long time to come, with Roarke's help, of course!

Another MacGregor winner
I loved this book and the whole series about the wonderful MacGregor family. This one contains two stories-

**Alan's story- alan is the first born son and a US Senator with aspirations for the presidency. He falls for Shelby- an eccentric Washington potter who's father was also a senator and assassinated when she was just a girl. For this reason, Shelby does not want to get back involved into politics. Alan spends most of the book plotting to win over her and I enjoyed his attempts to do so. This was a charming novel.

**Grant's story--Grant is a reclusive artist who lives in an old lighthouse. Gennie is on the run from a tragedy in her past and is stranded when her car stops. She winds up on Grant's door-like a breath of sunshine. He wants to remain a recluse but Gennie has gotten into his heart. It is quite funny and touching, esp when they go visit the Macgregor family.

I very much enjoyed these stories as i have all the macgregor novels- Nora Roberts certainly has crafted a winning dynasty.

Glory in Death
Published in Digital by Berkley ()
Authors: J. D. Robb and Nora Roberts
Amazon base price: $7.99
Average review score:

Second installment in an unusual series
Glory in Death is not a perfect book but it is entertaining, as is the series. What I enjoy most about the entire series is the fact that it has elements of three genres - romance, mystery and science fiction. Does it do any of them perfectly? No. Is is refreshing to read something that isn't strictly formula? Yes. Could a first time writer get a publisher for something so out of the mold? Probably not, but Nora Roberts knows how to tell a story and publishers know she sells books.

In this book, an outspoken female prosecutor is killed. The victim is a close friend of Eve's boss. One of the interesting elements of the book is Eve's conflict between office politics and what's best for resolving the case. The media is hard on the case - and the newly famous female detective. Her relationship with billionaire, Roarke, only increases the pressure. Much of the book focuses on the maturation of Eve and Roarke's relationship which has some rocky moments.

I also enjoyed the future setting. Manhattan in 2058 is an interesting place. (And everytime I think the gadgets are impossible, I remember my skepticism about a thing called cell phones when a client discussed them in 1983.) I'm looking forward to learning more about this familiar but not so familiar world.

Second book to a great series!
I read the first book with such enthusiasm, but this one was only better! Eve and Ruarke continue in the developing a relationship, unlikely for both being they are very strong and independent characters. You get a little bit of both their haunting pasts as you go along. This does keep it very interesting. The year is 2058 and the setting for this future is really easy to believe and she did a great job with the setting. The mystery of "who done it " is really great as I didn't figure out who it actually was in either books! I have already started the third and this is really a great series!!!

Fantastic Read!
"Glory in Death" is the second instalment in Robb's (aka Nora Roberts) "In Death" series and it is even better than the first one.
In this book, Eve, a cop with the NYPSD in the year 2058 has another serial killer to catch. Someone is killing high-powered women in the public eye, and it's Eve's job to find out who.
Along with the exciting and imaginative mystery, there is also the developing relationship between Eve and billionaire Roarke. Their romance is fresh, complex and quite intense. Roarke is always willing to help Eve solve her cases with the many tools available to him, and together, both personally and professionally, these two make a great team.
Eve will win readers' hearts as the feisty and emotionally troubled heroine and Roarke is a hero who every reader will adore. The plot is suspenseful and well thought out and balances the mystery with the romance beautifully. Overall, this is a first-rate romantic suspense novel with a fascinating futuristic setting and I highly recommend it!

Nora Roberts familiar
LOCAL HERO
Hester Wallace is a single mother living in Manhattan with her young son. The story begins with their move to a new apartment, a new job and a new school. Her son, Radley, is a comic buff, is much more excited than she to discover that the author of his favorite comic resides just a few floors away. Mitch Dempsey falls for the boy and mother almost instantly. But Hester must overcome the demons of her first marriage if they are to have the chance of becoming a family.

DUAL IMAGE
Ariel Kirkwood, a young actress on the rise, has just landed a role that could launch her career. Playing the cruel, undermining ex-wife of script writer Booth DeWitt would be her most difficult role to date. But winning isolationist Booth's trust, and love, proves to be more difficult than any role she could imagine.

This is the light, short-length Roberts. I read each of these in a few hours. Its the type of Roberts that makes you relax without digging too deep into the characters. I ranked this a four only because I prefer her full length murder/romances - but there is nothing wrong with these as well!

Double treats from Ms. Roberts
Manhattan is the common setting of this two reissue of Harlequin romance of distinction by publishing phenomenon Nora Roberts. Local Hero, the more polished tale out of the two, is Ms. Robert's attempt at exploring the single-family platform prevalent in 1990s and its insecurities through a schmaltzy romance between banker Hester Wallace and comic whiz Mitch Dempsey. Being neigbours the unlikely duo is brought together by their attachment for Randall, Hester's bubbly son who worships Mitch as a daddy-figure. Abandoned by her irresponsible ex, Hester is naturally wary and vulnerable of this whirlwind romance. The second romance, Dual Image fulfils our soap-opera fantasies as movie scriptwriter Booth DeWitt is enchanted by soap-opera actress Ariel Kirkwood. Hurt by a cold ambitious actress Elizabeth Hunter, Booth is reminded of the deceptions when Ariel plays a character scripted like her. Ariel faces a custody battle for her nephew and a rocky path to love. Ms. Roberts captures the nuances of love and its shades of emotions beautifully with a frosty happy ending and amicable characters that leaves millions of her fans in awe - truly, madly and deeply.

Two winners
I liked both of these stories. I think this is probably the best of the reprints that have come out lately. These are early Nora Roberts books, so if you are looking for romantic suspense, you won't find it here. I also think these 2 stories are more polished than some of the other early novels that have been released lately. Of the two, Local Hero is my favorite. Mitch writes comic books, and though Hester's son likes him, Hester is wary. She is a serious bank manager who has been hurt by love before. (By the way, I agree with the other reviewer that Hester is not the greatest of names! Don't let that put you off.) I found this story to be absolutely delightful. Mitch is one of Ms. Robert's best heroes, in my opinion. The second story, Dual Image, I liked just a little bit less. It was also an interesting and well written story. Ariel get the lead in Booth's screenplay which he wrote about his nasty ex-wife. Even though Ariel seems different, Booth is not sure he trust her because she is, after all, an actress like his ex-wife and might be hiding her feelings. To me, the only downside to the story was Booth's cynical attitude. He pulls away from Ariel because she can't possibly be as good as she seems. The way he continually withdraws emotionally from Ariel got a bit tiring toward the end. Still, I did enjoy it. I would give Local Hero 6 stars if I could, and I would probably give Dual Image 4 and a 1/2. Both are definitely keepers!
