GREAT BOOK!
This is always the first book my two-year-old grabs before bedtime. He'll now sit and "read" it to himself. This book includes a great collection of animals (bunnies, dogs, otters, tigers, kangaroos, bats, and my son's favorite. . . the panda)! I highly recomend this one. It not only includes the animals but also includes lots of HUGS. ENJOY!

My kid loves this
My 17 month old boy absolutely loves this book. I usually have to read it to him two or three times in a row or he will get upset. It has been on heavy rotation at our house much longer than the average new book we get for him. Michael Rex is one of the best kids book illustrators out there as far as I'm concerned. If you like this do a search on his name. All of his books are awesome--especially the Painting Gorilla.

Worth hugging
This gentle book begins, "You hug your mama, and your mama hugs you." From there, the text asks how each of several animals hugs - from a bunny to a gorilla and even a bat. The question is answered for a different animal on each double-page spread using words and pictures. Both the text and the illustrations evoke a variety of senses and encourage the parent and child to hug along. A cozy book to share with a child.

well written, fascinating
This book is thoroughly researched and footnoted and very well written. It culminates in a balanced account of the development of the International War Crimes Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and exposes the role of Western nations in supporting- and in some cases, obstructing the tribunal's work. Bass' thesis is that Western nations value human rights and the rule of law,- but not more than the lives of their own soldiers - thus accounting for the sporadic Western support for War Crimes tribunals. This is provocative book which has many insights into the complexities of international organizations, human rights, and diplomacy.

real good book
The man has courage to deal with these issues read the book

Don't Miss This Book
Gary Jonathan Bass's book is a riveting, thoughtful read into what has been a long-neglected chapter of history. Piecing it all together wasn't easy. Mr. Bass takes sound scholarship, adds good reporting, and weaves a tale that I, frankly, could not put down. Read it. You won't regret it.

My Kingdom For a Neighborhood Nerd
I read Michael Bremer's book, Taming The Electronic Beast, cover to cover, and found it fun, very entertaining and inspiring. In fact, I was so inspired I spent six hours recently learning basics on my computer without a single moment of stress. It was the most fun I've had yet on the Beastly Bin of Boorish Banality! (See three-part insult starter kit in book.) I've had a pc for about three years now, and whenever the thought of trying to use it appeared, I would feel aversion to even turning it on. I avoided spending time on it because I saw it as a joyless waste of time. I simply wanted to be able to turn it on and know how to use it without spending too much time. The suggestions and the voice of the book changed my attitude. I now see the time spent during the learning phase is not a waste. The Edison example was inspiring, and the idea that learning something new exercises the brain makes the learning curve much more palatable. And making mistakes represents progress. I knew all this, but I needed a reminder. I see the light and it looks like fun! I loved the humor of the book. Just the thought of embarrassing my computer with a pair of big, pink, floppy, ears makes me smile. The three-part insult starter kit has the potential to be very useful in many situations. And I may even try spending some time on a computer game or two. I hear The Sims is quite entertaining. Really, the book was been very helpful. I'm loaning it to my Mother now. We're both looking forward to future Advice From The Neighborhood Nerd books. There are many questions beginners have. For many people it is a challenge to become computer literate. We appreciate having someone like the neighborhood nerd out there to hold our hands, and the voice of the book was comforting. I recommend it to anyone preparing to learn about computers.

Humorous CommonSense Computers For Everyone
Are you afraid of your computer? Need to figure out what the kids know? Is it time to jump on the computer bandwagon but worried about falling down? Join Michael Bremer in this humorous and commonsense book to lose your fear and become more in tune with today's technology. Bremer manages to put everything into perspective and make learning about the computer more enjoyable. His main goal is to help you conquer your fear of computers by learning what might happen if you push the

wrong button. Afraid of breaking your computer? Losing your data? Getting a virus? Bremer goes over these details with refreshing clarity and simplicity. And he is reassuring in his assessment of computer "damage," unlike the doomsday press notices we see each day about computer failures. Truly a worthwhile book for those with computer anxiety. - The Science Spiders Newsletter

An excellent gift idea
Taming the Electronic Beast with a subtitle Conquering Computer Fear is a well written book from writer Michael Bremer who calls himself The Neighborhood Nerd. The illustrations are clever. This easy to read book would be an ideal gift for anyone who is hesitant about making their first purchase of a computer. Bremer really taps into the basics with his Computer Attitude Tests. A good read.

Traditional African Names
Published in Hardcover by Scarecrow Press (15 December, 1999)
Author: Jonathan Musere
Amazon base price: $67.50
Used price: $40.00
Average review score:

A Very Extensive Book on African Naming Practices & Names
This detailed book that contains 6000 heavily interpreted personal names is likely the biggest book collection of African personal names. Just as with his other books on names, written quite recently, Musere goes into dedicated detail in showing aspects like the origin of the name and the meanings (which can be one or many). A lot of the names are shown to be associated with aspects like proverbs, significant occurences and traditions. African names are shown to be unique in that analyzing them provides a wealth of information concerning cultural practice, migration, and assimilation. This is a study and naming guide that gives detailed examples of God/ Goddess, war, natural phenomena, and season related personal names. Many are examples of names that depict the behavioral characteristics, physiological or physical condition of the newborn. Indeed many African names illustrate the state of mind of the namer, states of bereavement or jubilation, and so forth. This book is heavily referenced and indexed unlike most other books on African names.

Review Excerpt:s on "Traditional African Names" by Musere
"...the topic [of personal African names] is sufficiently rarely treated as to merit close attention. ...[The book's] introduction is a splendidly informative essay. In it [Musere] explores the origins of African names. Just as we have many names revealing the activities of our ancestors, such as Archer, Fisher, Smith, Taylor and many others, the same applies to African names. [Musere] gives examples such as canoe builders, executioners, rain-makers and cattle-keepers. The reverence for human relationships is perpetuated in many names, while a variety of birds, animals, fish, trees and other natural phenomena are the bases for others. Africa has long been one of my favourite continents and I have numbered many Africans among friends. ...Musisi means "earthquake" and...Bukenya means someone who acts ungraciously or reluctantly. ...Musere's book is packed with information and it is easy to consult. It is equipped with a useful index, so you can be directed to all those names derived, say from eating and harvesting, lakes and
roads, trees, witchcraft and a host of other topics and activities." K.C. Harrison, Founder President, Commonwealth Library Association in "Languages and Literature" Reference Reviews 14/5 [2000] 29-36.

Journal Excerpts from Reviewers
"'A thorough exposure of African name meanings encourages and stimulates people of both African and non-African descent into feeling comfortable about taking on such names.' ...such as Sindushwa (I cannot be surpassed); Mbarushimana (God is on my side); Nkurunziza (Good news). ...Okot (Born during the rainy season). ...This is a fascinating book. ...it certainly brings home the fact, of which I was previously unaware, that the uses and the choices of names have quite different connotations and expectations in different societies." (Sheila Allcock, University of Oxford, in "African Research & Documentation" No. 85, 2001).

"Some examples are 'Libbila (m): setting sun; [name] given to one born at sunset'; 'Kimenyi (m): the one who knows a lot'; 'Shumpa (f): a name given to a child who is troublesome'; 'Baliza (f/m): they cause to weep [or mourn, or cry].' The 6000 [name] examples [in the book] are fascinating to read, and will most certainly open up a new area in the field of nomenclature. In addition, an interesting index will lead the user to specific works found in the definitions, such as lakes, plants, gardens, and food. This is an impressive volume and should fill a void in the area of etymology. It is highly recommended." (Carol Willsey Bell in "C&RL News," May 2000, pp.428-429).

Superior World War Two Photographic History
Rarely do expensive books pan out, but in this case, the "U. S. Army Photo Album" is worth every penny. The volume is loaded with great, crystal clear photographs from the National Archives. Whereas many people say that a picture is worth a thousand words, the excellent commentary provided makes the photographs so much more valuable.

Admirable books like this just don't come off the press every day. First, the photographs are all in color. Second, the subjects covered include U. S. training facilities, demonstrations of equipment used, scenes of American military operations throughout Europe, and unusual units in the field, 1941-1945. It makes one hope that a similarly skilled pair of photographers were assigned to make color photographs for the Pacific theater.

The pages in this book are superb reference material. World War Two veterans, their family, historians, reenactors, and memorabilia collectors will appreciate the high value of this work. Libraries with an interest in American World War II history should consider purchasing this book for their permanent collections as well.

Highly Informative Work
The author has made a specialty of winkling out color photography taken during WW II. The modern 35mm camera had just been introduced in the late 1930s and Kodacolor and Kodachrome were just being marketed in the U.S. But most professionals still used Speed Graphics and other large format plate film cameras which took only monochrome photos. As most magazines and all newspapers, except in their Sunday roto sections, used B & W pictures only, there was little incentive to take large amounts of color. As for the film of the day, it was quite slow compared with that of today, and required almost ideal sun conditions at mid-day to come out. For years those of us who researched in the Signal Corps archives knew there were color negatives available but it was easier to order B & W copies. In addition, much WW II color was taken by private individuals with personally owned 35mm cameras either captured from the enemy or smuggled overseas. Field conditions were such that color 35mm film processing was non existent for the individual not on official business. Considering the conditions under which they have been kept and the chemical instability of the film negatives, it is surprising how much good material actually has survived. The author is to be commended, first, for finding so much clear photography and, second, for having the detailed knowledge of clothing, arms, and equipment, to properly write identifying captions. This is one for the serious collector and historian, not for the shelf in the local public library. It will probably be stolen anyway. It's that tempting.

Great Pictures
I've seen many WWII books and this is one of the best. Not just a "photo album", the author took the time to write informative comentary.

Heartburn Cure on the Horizon
I'm 32 and have had heartburn since I was a teenager. I controlled it with TUMS. A year ago I finally went to a GI doctor and he immediately prescribed Prevacid. It worked great. I could eat anything, even my favorite pepperoni pizza. After a year on the drug I decided to quit cold turkey. I didn't want to have to take this drug the rest of my life especially after hearing some of the possible long term side effects (stomach tumors). I had horrendous heartburn non stop for 2 weeks. I stuck with only Tums to help ease the pain. I got to thinking that something else might be going on. I called my sister who worked at an allergy clinic. She had me come in to speak with the doctor. He ordered Food Allergy tests. Sure enough... Dairy, Tomatoes, Corn, Peanuts. At about the same time, I found this book. This book explains why that it is very probable that I got these food allergies from STOMACH ACID SUPPRESSION. It also explains why I could have low stomach acid which might be the cause of my GERD. It could also explain why I have had acne since I was a teenager. It's all exposed in this wonderful book. This is no joke... I now believe I will find out soon when I get my allergies under control that STOMACH ACID IS GOOD FOR YOU!!!

It works!
I am a current patent of Dr. Wright and have read his book after my stomach acid was tested ,as outlined in the book, and showed to be extremly low. I have been following the guidance outlined and under Dr Wrights guidance and feel better. No more bloating after a meal and more stable energy through the day. It is too bad most doctors do not check their patents stomach acid level before prescribing medication. As outlined in this book, digestion is not the only problem associated with low stomach acid.

Indigestion is most often caused by too little acid!
Hard to believe, but true - at least in my particular case and, in the authors' opinion, about 90% presenting with indigestion.
After being warned by a pediatrician about the high incidence of stomach cancer among patients taking acid suppressors, I scoured the health food stores and web looking for alternative therapies until finally finding Dr. Wright's & Lenard's book.
They explained in detail how the stomach and, by extension, the whole body, are severely compromised by low stomach acid. The doctors expose the drug companies - who have known since the 1800s that the symptoms of low stomach acid mimic and are much more common than those attributed to too much acid - for the greedy pushers that they are.
The doctors warn of an impending stomach cancer epidemic and other related health problems if the drugs that are currently dispensed like candy (and are amazingly available over the counter) continue unfettered.
In my own personal experience, I have been under treatment for GERD and heartburn for over 10 years with typical emphasis on acid reduction, e.g., Prilosec, Nexium, and a lot of Rolaids. I was off drugs the same day I received this book and feel much better by taking over-the-counter supplemental acid and pepsin.
No doubt the drug companies will attack the truth here. There is a lot of money to be made by selling expensive products that at once reduce and yet sustain the indigestion symptoms daily until the patient eventually dies.
This information is a lot like that of Australian medical researcher Dr. Barry Marshall, the man who was ridiculed but later vindicated for discovering that the cause of many ulcers is a helicobacter pylori bacterial infection. While initially controversial, this book will hopefully similarly end up changing the dependence on dangerous acid-reducing drugs and save lives.

Logical Deductions
Be caredul with this book. It can burn your hands! After you buy this book, you will see a picture of Lama Zopa Rinpoche
with Lama Yeshe. This is fine. Photographs can be fun to look at. But when you go to the next page, you will see another picture of Lama Zopa Rinpoche with Lama Yeshe. But now Lama Yeshe is a boy. How? This is his new incarnation. Now we must keep an open mind. We don't know about this. Maybe Tibetans just find a preganant woman and say, "That is the new incarnation." Actually, their system of recognizing incarnations is pretty scientific. But let us be skeptical.
But what if it is true? Now read more into the book. This book holds no punches. We are lucky if we are reborn a human! This
book may let us down, punch us on the jaw, and then hold us up.
But it will prepare you for what Buddhists really believe. They believe in reincarnation into another form. And you will be oh so lucky if it is a human the next time. This book is brillant and concise. It will cut you into a million pieces. It will leave blisters on your hands. Because despite your love for the teachings of His Holiness the Dali Lama or Sogyal Rinpoche, I am betting that you don't really know what they believe. Buy this book and find out. And if you think that the Tibetans may be onto something, then I think you better do something about it.

turned my mind to the dharma!
This is a great book! This is one of the first books to really turn my mind to the dharma. Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche were like the dynamic duo of Dharma, spreading the truths of the Buddhist teadhings to the west. I would reccomend reading anything by either of them as their wisdom and skillful means are perfected and help us (sentient beings) to understand how to grow and reach full buddhahood for the benefit of all. If you ever have a chance to recieve teachings in person from Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche I would highly reccomend takeing the opportunity to recieve the blessings and transmissions of this enlightened master, Lama, Guru, Shaman, healer, Buddha. And if you are ever have the chance to see, venerate, circumnabulate, and prostrate to any of the Stupas which hold Lama thubten Yeshe's ahes, I would encourage that holy act as well. I have given this book to relatives and would reccomend it to anyone.

No-nonsense Insights into the Human Condition
This is a deeply refreshing book about elementary Buddhist ideas. The authors, Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, present the material in a clear logical way that immediately rings true. They are empirical and scientific in their approach, even comparing Buddhist inquiry about the nature of self to a scientific investigation. Their refrain throughout the books is "check it out" --- verify for yourself, in your own practice, that their observations are true. They are not preaching dogma: quite to the contrary, they are proposing "testable hypotheses" of inner life, and they suggest inner "experiments" for the reader to carry out. The analyses are precise, and yet the precision is conveyed without jargon. This book is profoundly accessible to the modern Western reader, particularly to someone who has a background in science. Because of the cogency of the arguments, I would recommend this book not only to students of Buddhism and comparative religion, but also to students of philosophy, psychology, anthropology --- anyone who uses rational and scientific investigation to explore human nature in an attempt to ameliorate human problems.

A must read for all Irish Americans
Stevenson does an outstanding job providing a backdrop to the current political and social culture of Ireland for the American reader. He describes Ireland's troubled history siting specific watershed events, rhetoric form all sides as well as the major laws that created the political climate the troubles stemmed from. This book is a quality read for anyone interested in understanding why Ireland is divided, and a must read for all Irish Americans.

Brilliant
This book is fantastic. Stevenson's understanding of Irish politics makes this book an invaluable addition to the scholar's bookshelf while keeping it accessible to readers who may be unfamiliar with the intricacies of Irish history.

The "Troubles", as seen by the trouble-makers
The heart of Mr Stevenson's book is the personal history, much of it told in their own words, of thirty-one Northern Ireland terrorists and ex-terrorists--fourteen republican, seventeen loyalist. Along the way Mr Stevenson fills in all the necessary details of recent history, and a good deal of more general historical and social matter. Mr Stevenson is an American who lived in Belfast 1993-1996. He has written a very good, very worthy book.

The first thing I want to know about a book on the Irish "Troubles" is: does the author make excuses for terrorism? Nobody who has seen terrorism at close hand can believe that it is a proper method in the pursuit of any goal, nor that unrepentant terrorists are fit people to govern any polity. In this respect Mr Stevenson is clean, his moral sense absolutely sound--an unusual thing among American writers on Ireland. While offering full coverage of the frequent nastiness and illegality of the British state's counter-terrorist actions, and of the cruel viciousness of "loyalist" terrorism, he knows--and shows--Sinn Fein/IRA for what it is: the last (it was also one of the first) of the European fascist parties. No matter who you are--Irish, British, republican, loyalist, Protestant, Catholic--if you disagree with Sinn Fein, they do not disagree politely back (except, of course, on American TV): they break your legs. Then they go and break your mother's legs. That is the reality behind Gerry Adams' unctuous smile. "Ah, but they're only trying to get back their lost land," murmur the apologists. This is like saying that Al Capone was only trying to make a living--an equally true statement. It's a question of METHOD.

Here are the actual trouble-makers of the Troubles. The broad picture Mr Stevenson assembles from his portraits is familiar to anyone who has followed the course of events; but it is told with an admirable objectivity and an appealing undercurrent of optimism--not only optimism for this poor tortured piece of land, but for the possibilities of individual human redemption. In spite of the occasional atrocities of 1996-7, Mr Stevenson believes that the real violence is over, and that the hard men of both sides are struggling to adapt to constitutional methods. I hope he is right
