The best modern Organic Chemistry text I have come across!
This is undoubtedly the best modern book for learning Organic Chemistry. It simply cannot be compared with any of the traditional texts like Morrison and Boyd, because it presents Organic Chemical research as a cutting edge science of the present and future. Since it was first published in 2001, in this book you will find accounts of reactions and reagents that you will simply not find in any similar text. From Suzuki, Heck, and Sonogashira couplings to very important new reactions like Grubbs' olefin metathesis, it covers the whole gamut of current organic chemistry. The most important and fascinating aspect of the book is the almost countless examples of modern drugs, pesticides and other molecules that are presented to illustrate the reactions. In this, for example, one can find the example of how the simple concept of pKa of acids was used in the synthesis of Ranitidine, the best selling drug of today. Or a separate interesting chapter on Sulfur chemistry and Asymmetric Synthesis as applied to important problems in Biology and Medicine.
In fact, the whole approach is very much bioorganic as well as highly practical. From this book, we learn how organic chemistry is used in a highly exciting manner by real life chemists solving real life problems. It truly conveys the excitement in organic chemistry as practiced today. I believe that if you can thoroughly grasp the principles in this book, you are probably comparable to the best organic chemistry graduate in the world. The informal and honest style of the authors is almost too good to believe. Boxed material which contains key points and the colour used in the book make it a very attractive one. The book is a source of an incredible amount of information. The authors must have really spent a lot of efforts in writing it. Truly a book for the 21st century.
A book which is an absolute must on the shelves of practicing chemists and students alike.

the best undergrad text in organic chemistry available
I bought this book on the suggestion of one of the reviewers to get an overview of fundamentals of Organic Chemistry in my way to clear cumulative examinations.I'm in total agreement with the previous reviewers.I went through many of the undergrad texts in organic and I'm certain that this is the best among available. This is really a 21st cetury organic text. The approach adopted is very personal(as if the authors were directly talking to you). The language used was piquant. This book is a bonanza of information. The good things about this book are they used pKa values to predict the rates of different reactions and they widely used the MOT to interpret the reaction mechanism and stereochemistry in many reactions. They made the embittered subject caviar to the general. Students who have read this book can't be overwhelmed by the mind boggling mechanisms their professors write. I would also like to suggest Norman & Coxon's "Principles of Organic Synthesis"(published by nelsonthornes)for a comprehensive coverage of synthesis stuff. That's a reader friendly text and gives you the logic of synthesis(unlike the Carey's book that presents all the reactions sequentially which are often not rationalized)

One of the best Organic chemistry textbooks
This is an exceptionally good book of organic chemistry. The detailled mechanistic of different substitution reactions has no equivalent in other textbooks. The quantitative use of pKa values to explain reactivity and the good discussion of Hammett relationships makes it also excellent. The book is specially good for biological or pharmaceutical oriented students. They will found plenty of examples why their work is relevant.
As the authors clearly stated, it could not be directly used in a sophomore american course. However, it would be very good as a reference and for advanced organic chemistry courses.

Our Mothers' Recipes: Remembering the Meals That Shaped Our Lives

Jello, macaroni and cheese, my kind of food!
My mother made all the recipes in this graphically appealing book.
It may be why I never learned to cook but then again, I loved reading the stories of food memories, fragrances and childhood moments. Have you noticed this is now fashionably called "comfort food"...well it always was that, it's just taken the chefs of the world to catch-on. As a mid-westerner, I'm thoroughly enjoying this classic book. I can smell my Mom's homemade bread as we speak.

Add this to your cookbook collection!
This neat little cookbook is a must-buy. My mother's been gone for thirty-six years, but not a day goes by that I don't think of all the wonderful things she used to do for me, not the least of which was her marvelous cooking. Authors Udell and Cutler have assembled a collection of the kind of mouth watering, home-concocted recipes that were characteristic of our mothers' generation. Wait till you try mother Jesse Johnson's recipe for Wild Rice Casserole!

childhood revisited
This book took me way back to my childhood and teen years. I got a warm feeling reading the stories and I could relate to many of them. I can smell the aroma of those wonderful dishes even today.

Best book on the Market regarding Macular Degeneration.
Here's a book with real substance written by a doctor who has M.D.There are too many books on the marketthat appear to be written by doctors who are looking over someones shoulderin an attempt to write authoritively onthe subject. I was very impressed by the dept of knowledge of this doctor who writes with true in depth investigative knowledge, he truly understands because he has the problem.A lot of good advice regarding diet which is of major importance, and life style, (Smoking), etc.Careful reading will show at least how to stop the progression and he also tells what kind of research is being done to find , if not a cure, at leastpossible major help.I'll buy anything this guy writes !

Best book yet!
This book on macular degeneration is by far the best one published to date. There are numerous other publications available by other doctors that don't come close to the quality and depth of information contained in this book. I even gave a copy to my eye doctor who was not aware of it's availability.I must add that this doctor really speaks from personal experience with Macular Degeneration and it shows in the quality and quantity of great information.I thank God for this mans bookand highly recommend it to anyone who has MD or a friend or relative with the problem.Sincere thanks,Lee CarlsonSpring Hill, Fl

Best resource on Macular Degeneration
I have a parent with macular degeneration and this book gave my father and our family new hope and inspiration. Particularly compelling was the fact that the author himself suffers from this affliction. The information provided was extremely useful and written in an informal, personal and non-technical manner. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has or knows someone with macular degeneration.

Pharmacotheon = Bible
Besides being really thick and imposing, this tome is really heavy. Really, really heavy. Jonathan Ott takes the time to document every reference ever published (seemingly, at least) while creating a surprisingly entertaining read.

This book is the Bible. I have never read a text more accurate, more useful, and more informative. If you can find this book, buy it. Protect it. Cherish it. Buy it presents. Take it on trips to the zoo- in fact, take it everywhere you go.

I do, and it has changed my life.

encyclopedic fun
a comprehensive, mind-blowing book written by a brilliant researcher and talented writer.

Ott is one of those minds that turns over every rock, looks around every corner and behind every door to uncover for you, the reader, each sumptuous detail of his subject.

Get your hands on every book this man has written.

A must have for those interested in Entheogens A++++
Johnathon Ott has carried the Entheogenic movement one giant step forward with this scholarly text of immense value to anyone interested in the future of entheogens. This book has been limited to a printing of 5000 copies, I am glad that I got mine before they were all gone.

HOT "Reality Fiction"
Just finished reading Jonathan Sexton's book, PIXIESTICKS. Really, really liked it. It's soooo refreshing to read good work from a good writer who's not afraid of gay teens having sex. In other words, REALITY!!! PIXIESTICKS is one of those books that I call a "Keeper". You know, one of those books I know I'll want to read again later. Jonathan, if you read this, please, please, please write more. You simply must - for I have spoken & ye shall obey... jjl

Pixiesticks: It has it all.
The book has it all...endearing characters, villans that are hateful and hate-able, a shock in the middle, twists upon twists, stunning suspense and a resolution that only makes you beg for more. I would definately recommend it!

Pixiesticks is sweet!
No way would five stars be able to sum up the praise I would give this book. Not only does the author show creativity in this work, but he leaves the audience wanting more! I give this book five stars for creativity, Interesting character development, and readability.

A Phenomenal Resource
A great resource for anyone working in MRI!!

Outstanding in Every Way
This is a great source of information for all those involved in MRI practice. The authors give concise, readable, and even sometimes interesting answers to the most commonly asked questions pertaining to this complex subject, without unnecessary simplification. Both authors should be commended on a job well done. This beats the competition hands down!

Elster's Q & A on MRI, 2nd Ed.
This is an outstanding book for the beginner and intermediate level student of MRI. The book provides understandable, yet much more in depth explanations of basic physics and gives intuitive insights into mechanisms which I have not found in other presentations. Also, the references at the bottom of each question are superb, often with commentary on their special value. Some excellent web sites are given which I had not found by search engine. The authors clearly devoted tremendous effort to this book to make it as good as it could be and they were successful. This book is a paradigm for presenting highly technical topics in an understandable way - very impressive, and highly recommended to anyone learning MRI.

Sacred Horses: The Memoirs of a Turkmen Cowboy

Akhal-Teke horses, their riders and culture
A wonderfully written description of an Indiana Jones-style trip to Turkmenistan by writer, film maker and naturalist Jonathan Maslow. A life-long horse enthusiast, he grew up eventually wanting to ride Akhal-Teke horses in the steppe country north of Iraq and east of the Caspian Sea where they were first domesticated three millenia ago. "Girls seemed to lose their interest in horses about the time they discover boys. I'm not a girl, and I never lost it." His description of learning Russian in a crash course at Johns Hopkins is alone worth the price.

The book is a hard-to-find treat that will introduce you to a breed of horse and the culture that produced it, along with their shared geography, all described with the wit and insight of a sophisticated writer who, despite hardships that would send most of us back home, loves his work and the people it introduces him to.

fantastic book
maslow is a genius. it's truely a crime that this book is out of print as it should serve as a guide for all travel writing. maslow's ability to make any situation, no matter how grim hysterically funny makes me want to leap from my armchair into the most inhospitable places on the planet.

Very good history and traveloge
The book is very good. It covers the history of one of the most fascinating places in the world. The author also introduces us to many fascinating characters (the most unforgettable character I will ever meet). Finally he covers the history and current sadness of the people who are suffering from 80 years of communism

Fascinating story, excellent book
This book is an absolute must-read for anyone interested in ancient Egypt, reincarnation, astral travel, transpersonal psychology, or even if you want to read a fascinating, mysterious love story over eons of time!

Dorothy Eady, a 3-year old child in England, suffers a fall on some stairs in her home and is pronounced dead by a doctor. She probably has a near-death experience, though this is not claimed in the book. When she regains consciousness, it is as if her current personality has been merged wih the personality (purportedly) of a previous incarnation she had as a temple virgin in Abydos, Egypt. Bentreshyt, her name in that incarnation, had a short-lived affair with Sety the First (father of the famous Ramses II), and became pregnant at the tender age of fourteen. Forced into a confession by the temple priests, Bentreshyt then committed suicide.

Dorothy, just as the central character in "The Wizard of Oz," becomes fixated in finding her true self, and thus spends the rest of her life obsessed with ancient Egypt. She eventually lives in Cairo for 20 years, working in the Antiquities Depaartment, and then moves to Abydos, where she lives for the rest of her life, working at the same Temple of Sety where she had lived 3,000 years before.

Now called Omm Sety, which simply means "Mother of Sety" (she has a son during a short-lived marriage to an Egyptian), Dorothy makes significant contributions to Egyptology as an expert draftsman, writer, and scholar, as well as healing and aiding the local villagers in her "external life." Yet her "internal" life is one that few if any people could ever match! To put it very briefly, she has many meetings, both on the physical and astral planes, with her soulmate, Sety the First.

I will leave it to anyone who reads this review to get the book for the incredible details. The writing and the telling of the story are excellent from beginning to end. The epilogue is also a very stimulating, mostly psychological discussion of such "occult" issues as reincarnation, the nature of the astral body, astral projection, remote viewing, even Shelldrake's morphogenic fields, and more!

Get this book from your library if it is out of stock, as was shown here when I added this review.

My tattered copy attests to this books power
This is, without a doubt or reservation, one of the best books I've ever read. It's got everything a book should have AND MORE. What is amazing is that it's true. I wish I had the words to tell you how wonderful this book is. I have had my copy for years and I still pick it up and read it again. It's probably the only book I have ever loaned out that I have made the effort to track down and get back from friends. If you can find a copy GET IT. I'll personally give you your money back if you don't like it.

The Search for Omm Sety; A Story of Eternal Love
A fantastic book. Full of history, archaeological finds, love. It encompasses all levels of spirituality and would be enjoyable to those who are open minded spiritually rather than the cynics!. I have read it 3 times now and will be presented beautifully together.

Over There!: The American Soldier in World War I (G.I. Series (Philadelphia, Pa.).)

Amazon base price: $22.95

Clear and Incisive
This book is part of the G. I. series of short illustrated studies covering a period or a series of campaigns. All of these books are vertical studies covering a period of years. Though sometimes the illustrations serve to identify individual items of equipment, these works are not intended for that purpose. They are not catalogs intended for materiel collectors. They are of such a length and of such a level of detail that they will serve the purposes of the general reader with a curiousity about what grandaddy did in WW II or great great great grandaddy in the Civil War and what he looked like and how he lived. This is not to say that the specialist such as myself cannot find useful nuggets herein. I can. I use these for general surveys of periods I do not study in detail, such as the Civil War, and the War With Mexico, etc. And to look up the odd facts. I have yet to be disappointed with any of them.

Over There, The American Soldier in WWI
Although the uniforms of the US Army are not my primary interest, I found this book to be an excellent introduction to this subject, albeit a photographic essay. Having several of Shelby Stanton's books on US Army uniforms, I would like to see a similar book on WWI, but as a primer this book has no peer. I recommend it unreservedly.

Over There, The American soldier in WWI
I too purchased this book from a book club, and a facinating buy it was! Although uniforms of the US Army are not my primary interest, this book covered a subject that I knew little or nothing about; this book changed that emphatically. Although I would have liked to read more on uniform development, especially the evolution from blue to khaki, the book is an excellent source for students of WW I, and I highly recommend it.

Prayerbook Hebrew the Easy Way
Published in Paperback by Eks Pub Co (1988)
Authors: Joseph Anderson, Ethelyn Simon, and Jonathan Rubenstein
Amazon base price: $18.95
Used price: $14.99
Average review score:

Book is good; tapes could be better
I bought both the book and the accompanying tapes.

The book introduces no more than 10 vocabulary words, a grammatical concept, and reading from a prayer. By the time you're finished, you understand basic constructs of Hebrew thought, and several important prayers, including the Sh'ma, the Aleinu, and V'ahavtah.

It presupposes only that you know basic Hebrew pronunciation of the alefbet and vowels.

I really like the book, but I'm disappointed with the tapes, which I would have preferred to have been read by an Israeli speaker. Still, I may be too picky on this aspect, since it's designed to help you with prayer, and not with getting along in Israel. One thing that might help is if the tapes separated the grammar lessons from the prayers. I would be willing to listen to a tape of prayers in the car, just so I could get an idea how they sound, especially if the prayers were chanted.

Fear-free!
As a child, I tried to learn and it didn't stay with me. What did stay was a fear that understanding prayerbook Hebrew was something I couldn't do. Well, judging by the excellent reviews, I bought this book. And lesson one made me sigh with relief. I *can* learn this!

Please note that you need to know the Hebrew alphabet but then you can move right along.

Very Easy-to-Learn Hebrew Manual
This book does not require any complicated grammatical prerequisites. You don't have to have headache to cram up the declension and the conjugation of the nouns and verbs. If you just follow the lessons, you will soon be accustomed to the practical Hebrew liturgy. This is a well designed excellent manual for learning Hebrew for the beginners.
