Just the right size to fit in your coat pocket!
This little book starts off by actually teaching you HOW to read a CXR. Not many books do that ... they just assume that you can. Then it goes into the four broad categories of abnormalities: 1) too white, 2) too black, 3) too large and 4) in the wrong place which helps you to categorise abnormalities. Then all the major conditions (e.g. pneumonia, COPD, malignancies etc.) are reviewed under each category. Read this before you start you clinical years and keep it in your coat pocket along with 'The ECG made easy'. Look at heaps of CXRs and ECGs from the beginning of the year along with the help of these books. Practice makes perfect! Good luck! I wish someone had told me these things at the beginning of the year! ;)

Great book for first year P.A. students studying radiology.
This book teaches the basics such as pneumonia, pneumothorax, and other abnormal thoracic conditions through the use of x-rays. It explains the abnormal findings of each x-ray in a clear and easily understandable manner. Best book I've seen so far on chest x-rays.

A "must read" for students before starting on the wards.
I love this book. It first teaches the reader how to look at a chest x-ray in a simple, step-by-step approach. Then it is organized quite effectively into chapters based on the appearance of the x-ray (white lung field, widened mediastinum, etc.). A must read for medical students starting their rotations.

Great Storytelling
I only wish I had Jonathan's imagination. When he came up with the concept of duals, he had a winner all the way! At first, it was a little difficult for me to envision two separate people living in one body but once it became clear to me, I wished I'd thought of it. This is more than multiple personalities; it is two distinct people, each with their own personalities, living inside one body. And the explanation for that duality is absolutely believable. The reader learns to like each of the duals and when they are in danger, the suspense is high.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes a little fantasy in their diet. Even if you don't, give it a try; I'm sure you will agree that this book is awesome.

Best Fantasy Author I've Ever Read!
CHILDREN OF RHATLAN is a sure winner! Jonathan Fesmire's concept of duals brings a new dimension to fantasies of our daily lives. Once you pick this book up, you will want to keep reading it, even while eating! I look forward to reading books about duals for many years to come.

A new and exciting fantasy story!
'Children of Rhatlan' is an exciting story of duels, twins in the same body. Mr. Fesmire has written an excellent fantasy story, it's new and it's original. This author is one to watch for more wonderful stories in the future. Be sure to check out his anthology of short stories, 'Seeds of Vision' available in downloadable form or in trade paperback.

Complete Sea Kayak Touring
A superb book that contains all of the information one could possibly need on the subject, very well-written & entertaining!

good comprehensive book
I really liked the book. Its concise well written and goes over the basics of sea kayaking. It has helped me immensely as I'm just starting out. The author's enthusiasm is contagious and he's sense of humor makes the book an easy read.

This is a good all around kayak touring reference book
This book describes kayaking at its best. I was especially interested in the section on kayak camping and storage of gear. The book is organized well and covers all facets of kayaking. There are many clear closeup pictures of the topic being discussed and in fact there is at least 1 picture on every page. I enjoyed this book and I ordered a copy for my brother in Alabama.

The complete Yes Minister : the diaries of a cabinet minister

British humor at its best
if you like your humor understated and your wit dry (droll as humphrey would no doubt say), this book will be the best you have ever read. and it will stay that way.

the british civil service had a unique characteristic - it was not directly under the control of the political masters. this gave rise to a very interesting situation where the civil service and her majesty's servants were working towards entirely opposite ends. to the civil servant, imaginative and bold were the worst criticisms. change in any form was looked down upon - as we say here - "if it aint broke, dont fix it". the politicians (especially those new in office like hacker who weren't cynical enough not to care one way or the other) often came to office with lofty ideals of revolutionizing society and being the forefathers of a better tomorrow.

behind the curtain of civility, they (the civil servants and politicians) fought battle after battle. the art of realpolitik meant entirely diffent things to both sides. many of the battles went to the civil servants (Lord Humphrey being among the shrewdest) but at times Hacker (James Hacker - first minister and later Prime Minister) prevailed with his low cunning and fast realization that not everything was what it looked like.

each chapter is a revelation - the next time you read the news, you will see it in an entire different perspective after reading this book. action and motive are so far removed as to make the connection entirely unimaginable and the amount of time spent trying to do nothing seems at times appalling.

if slapstick is your cup of tea, stay away from this book. the humor is often less in what is said than in how it is said. the laughs never end. i have read this book 5 times now. the first time, you enjoy the humor for what it is. the second time, you start enjoying the situations, the broader picture, the political moves, and the sheer genius of humphrey. the third time you see how the characters develop. by the fourth time, it's like you're on crack. you cant explain it - you know what is going to happen next, you know the exact words. you still have to read it again. and again. and again.

Quite simply the Best book in Satirical humor
Sir Humphrey Appleby, Sir Bernard Wooley, and Rt Honorable James Hacker... this is simply the most outstanding work of humorous fiction that lampoons the British civil service and politicians alike.

Based on the diaries of the minister, the series has been converted to a wonderful teleseries, where the casting has been done by someone who truly loves the book and has imbibed the characters so completely, that on later readings of the book, the television characters appear to the mind.

The book is a series of short stories, which expose the careful interplay between the British civil service and the British politicians, the role played by media, the foriegn office, the various departments etc. It is a wonderful set of stories, where the English is truly masterful!! I remember reading each story with a pencil and dictionary while writing the GRE many years ago,... this and its sequel, yes prime minister, are books which should receive their space in your cabinet.

I dont know why this says - Limited availability, these books are easily procured in India where they are being printed.

That rarest humour - which is found in truth.
Yes Prime Minister is that rarest of books. It is based on a TV show, itself hilarious, and yet manages to be even better than the show. Whereas the show descends into slapstick and exaggerated humour at times, the book does not miss a step. The plots are wonderfully woven, the characters all superbly crafted and uniformly shallow and the writing is impeccable - there are never two words when one will do, and the characters will stay with you long after the first (of many) reading(s). I suspect in years to come, when some distance can be put between the book and it's times, it will be recognised as one of the all time comedy classics. Buy it now!

Beautiful creative ideas!
This book is packed with gorgeous, lush photos of creative floral arrangements. Absolutely beautiful, unique ideas with easily understood directions and pointers. A great buy!

Absolutely Beautiful
I first purchased this book while taking a course in floral design. The book was passed around the classroom with everyone doings ooooohs and aaaaahs. Even if you are not a floral designer, but simply a person who enjoys flowers or you want to have a spectacular looking party or wedding, this book is for you!

Breathtaking!
This is a book for flower fanatics at all levels. The arrangements highlighted in this book range from contemporary and sleek to out and out exquisite. The photography is superb and the colors of the flowers jump off the page - you can almost smell the roses and lilies! I will definitely be looking at more of Paula Pryke's books.

Excellent, Insightful and a Must-Read for MX Developers
Jonathan Kaye and his collaborators know simulations and simulation building, and it shows in this book. A thoughtful, very deep look at machine simulation building and the state engines which power any good machine simulation, "Flash MX for Interactive Simulation" is not a light read. Anyone designing educational simulations in Flash MX must read this book. You may not run out and start desiging all of your simulations with his state engine (because it's complex and resource intensive to integrate into your production practice), but you'll be a much better simulation developer -- or ActionScript developer, for that matter -- for having read the book.

Be ready for a challenge.
Anyone who has a complex Flash project that involves more than a few 'states' will find this book very interesting.

If you have a project that involves simulating something and you are thinking of using Macromedia Flash or even just wondering if Flash is up to the job, order this book now. It will save you days and I mean days of work on a simulation project and when the amends come in, it will again save you from ripping your hair out.

It doesn't come for free though, you will, unless your brain is very big, have to work at this book. Unlike many other IT books it's nearly all lean meat without the fat, miss a few vital paragraphs and you could find yourself confused further on. You will also probably find you will have to do some support reading to make sure you are up to speed on some of the topics that are assumed.

If you get stuck, don't fear, as there is an excellent support website for the book, if you post a question on the discussion board, you will most likely get an answer from the authors of the book in 24hrs.

The book to purchase for serious programming
FlashMX for Interactive Simulation by Jonathan Kaye and David Castillo is one of the most informative books I have read in quite a while. Don't expect this to be a light read however.

While the book was written primarily to teach you how to program Flash Device Simulations, it touches on many other facets of Flash design that are worthy of mention such as the use of Flash for educational instruction, usability testing, component design and much much more.

This book and the software provided on the CD ROM will allow you to add structure to your actionscript programming and will allow you to create complex applications that are predictable and easy to troubleshoot and maintain after the fact.

This book introduces UML state machine design into the Flash programming environment allowing complex applications to be easily developed that would otherwise have been very difficult.

Because the state machine provides a structured approach to your design, it is predictable and more important, maintainable. Documenting your design using state charts allows others to test your application which is great for large projects where many people are involved with the various phases of the project.

The state machine engine is provided on the CD ROM. This alone is worth the price of the book, not to mention all of the other goodies packed on the CD.

If you like to learn by example, the CD contains plenty of great working samples that show you how it is done. Each example is covered in detail in the book so you can either learn by doing from scratch or use the book and examples as a reference.

This is must have book if you are going to do any serious programming in Flash...

Froggy Gets Dressed: A Book and Frog Set

Froggy Gets Dressed
I teach early preschool and my children really enjoy this book. I have a great time reading it to them. The silly words are fun to read and even funnier for them to hear. They sit quietly and ask for it over and over. It's hard to find a book that pleases them all. "Froggy Gets Dressed" meets the challenge.

London is a master storyteller
In my opinion, Jonathan London is a master storyteller. His books are entertaining to adults as well as kids. I am a teacher, and my 2nd graders adore this book- they want to read it over and over again. It's our favorite wintertime story!

Really gets kids involved
I gave this book to my niece. I think my sister and brother-in-law have enjoyed it as much as she has. She just squeals when Froggy gets called in. She wants to read it over and over. A fun time for the whole family.

Fair treatment of a real controversy
When I received this book and saw "Yale University Press" emblazoned on the back, I thought, "Oh, no... another biased view of Lyme disease coming from the institution long associated with the conservative, repressive view (Edlow calls it "conventional") of Lyme disease." I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. This was a much better book than I expected and the Yale Lyme view is kept in perspective.

Edlow does a good job of presenting the politics of Lyme Disease, outlining the positions of the two camps he identifies as the "conventional" and "alternative" in a fairly unbiased fashion. (He even points out the irony of the terms. When it comes to Lyme disease, the conventional side advocates some pretty wacky theories without much scientific basis and the alternative side advocates sufficient antibiotics to control the disease.)

I was a little annoyed by Edlow's fawning over Allan Steere, the figurehead of the conventional camp. But read closely and you will see that Steere and his followers have been wrong in just about every one of their initial positions and Steere is given too much credit for his contributions to the science of Lyme Disease. Contrary to Edlow's apologies for him, Steere, arrogance personified, is slow to pick up on the obvious and is most often wrong. Abused patients and other scientists led the charge.

This is a minor quibble. There is excellent information on Lyme testing, the vaccination fiasco, and Lyme politics. There is much about the process of medical discovery. Edlow is quite fair and concludes with the real issue - the conventional camp, holding institutional power, should not be censoring and abusing proponents of alternate viewpoints. If you have Lyme disease, think you might, or know someone who does, read Karen Forschner's book first. If you feel you need some balance, want more background, or are interested in medical sleuthing and politics, read Edlow's, too.

Thorough and Interesting
Not only an excellent story that keeps your interest, but a real lesson to be learned by anyone involved in health care. The Lyme story reveals much about the doctor-patient relationship (or, frequently, the lack thereof) that every physician should read. A must read for anyone interested in the dynamics of both Lyme Disease and doctor-patient relations written as mystery novel

Bull's Eye Review from a doctor's perspective
I bought this book to learn more about Lyme disease but was pleasantly surprised that it read more like a detective story than a medical book. The author is able to tell the story about how patients and doctors gradually peeled away the layers of the mystery of Lyme disease in an understandable and entertaining style. More importantly, he exposes how doctors discover any new disease, or promote any new theory. I would recommend this book, not only for those who are interested in Lyme disease or medicine and science, but also anyone who simply wants to read a fascinating, well-told story.

The World of Words
If you, like me, live in a non english speaking country and love and teach the english language for a living, you definitely should have a copy of this book alongside a good regular dictionary. And even if english is your mother tongue you should get this book too. Of course all those swearing words are there but there is a lot more than that, there are plenty of cultural references in here that will help you to understand the origins of many terms so used on our daily lives and to discover how language adapts with time and space.

Great Book
Very comprehensive, and as a amatuer linguist, this is one of my favorite word books (I have dozens). You will find entries here that you won't even find in the 20-volume Oxford-English Dictionary. Unquestionably the best book on slang out there. Some of the definitions tend to be short, but obviously this had to be done to allow for more entries. Some of the words though is does go into some depth and history, for instance the word 'sockdolager', it mentions it was one of last words Abe Lincoln heard, which used as adjective form as 'sockdolagizing' spoken by character Asa Trenchard in Tom Taylor play "Our American Cousin". This book is a great buy for book lovers, but as one reviewer stated, avoid giving to young kids due to some of the explicit nature of many of the words.

Excellent language-lover's resource
Reaching back into English for some centuries and reaching through English as it's written & spoken today in many nations, this dictionary offers what seems a unique guide to the use of words and more particularly, phrases, that I can't find defined in any other work. Indispensable for those who really want to understand exactly what they're reading.

While I respect the Californian reader's suggestion that potential buyers also consider two other slang dictionaries, I point out that Green's work goes far beyond only American usages. There's plenty here about English, New Zealand, Canadian, Australian, and other variants of English.

Nice touch: the editor's introduction comes complete with an e-mail address. Any reader who finds a usage that Jonathon Green doesn't know about, is free to send it in for future editions. But I personally find few usages that Jonathon Green doesn't know about.

Excellent work but, because of attention paid to "rude words", probably not a good gift for children.

Excellent book about the history of Dark Shadows.
The book explains how the show got it's start. You read about how the actors were choosen and about them personally. There is a section about what each actor has done since the show ended. An episode guide gives a brief summary about all 1245 shows. There are several pictures throughout the book. Stories are told about the writing, set designs, and funny things that happened during the run of the show. This is a very interesting book.
