The best sort of German soldier.
Colonel-General Johannes Blaskowitz was a splendid soldier, a patriot, and a devout Christian. He was, unfortunately, in the employ of criminals. His protests of the atrocities in occupied Poland earned Hitler's enduring hatred, but the old soldier's professional skills were called upon repeatedly nonetheless. He never failed to perform superbly and humanely in the most adverse circumstances, for example saving the bulk of German forces in the retreat from southern France. His reward was his death in Allied confinement, possibly at the hands of the S.S.
His story is well told in this thoroughly researched and admirably written account, with photos, source notes, bibliography, and index. The maps are rudimentary but adequate for the casual reader.

Contemporary Challenges for Christianity
Essays by two leading theologians discuss the subjects that they find challenging for the future of Christianity. For Metz, most of the challenge is in restructuring Christianity from a European-based perspective to a more global inclusion of the needs of the non-European world. Metz looks forward to the revitaliation of Christianity from the common base of dealing with the issue of suffering in the world. Moltmann's topics deal with increasing ecumenical understandings between the various Christian sects and take up a broad range of theological isssues that often divide rather than bring together modern Christians such as Mariology and views on the Trinity. Most interesting is an essay on the concept of the triune God in relation to the Judaic concept of God. This collection of essays is readable by a lay person with a respectable knowledge base of traditional theology.

DEFINITELY A NECESSARY INCLUSION TO THE MILITARY LIBRARY
Having read this book several years ago (courtesy of Johannes), the feel of the pilots, the elite of the Luftwaffe and their battles, both in the air and on the ground against their own leadership are critical in understanding how these patriots continued their struggle. Johannes Seinhoff was only one of a handful of men who were qualified to write on this topic; he was present during the revolt in January 1945, along with Galland, Luetzow, Trautloft and others. In order to understand the war, both militarily and politically from the German viewpoint, this book should be read.

"Sheer artistic exhuberance"
Dresden's Historisches Museum holds one of three great world collections of armor, the other two being in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna and the Real Ameria, Madrid. Schobel and Karpinski are to be highly congratulated for this fine work that contains stunning full-page color plates plus black-and-white photos with superlative tonal gradations, a total of 180 illustrations. Each chapter is followed by generously annotated notes and precise historical identifications of pieces collected between the 16th and 18th centuries and that belonged to great European families. Recommended for any library by reason of sheer artistic exhuberance, or for the true connoisseur and collector of arms and armor.

The best requiem ever written
Dover does an extraordinary job in developing a quite accurate version of the German Requiem. Many consider this piece to be one of the best written in the Romantic Era. Brahms's originality and experimentation between the marriage of both the orchestra and chorus make this piece absolutely one of a kind. Strongly recommended for any listener and Dover's flawless edition is the best around if the listener wants to see the piece as Brahms visioned it.

One of the greatest Requiems.
Brahms' German Requiem is his best vocal work. Unlike the typical mass of the 18th and 19th centuries, This mass is not in Latin but in German. If anyone owns of a recording of this work, owning this score will greatley enrich your pleasure. This is indespensible for the Brahms fan. The notes are fairly small but easy to read, and there is ample room for your own notations. If you want to see a masters work in full force, buy this copy!

Vermeer's Optical Way
The range of Vermeer's genius-encompassing scientific and philosophical investigation, pictorial and painterly virtuosity, musical, philosophical, and literary allusions-was enormous. This is but one of the reasons that those who believe Vermeer did not make extensive use of such devices as the camera obscura are not even wrong. Such arguments entirely miss the point of Vermeer's complexity. Robert Huerta's book should inspire an appreciation of Vermeer in the context of the natural science of his time and "more [as he says] in the tradition of a Durer, a Velazquez, or even a Leonardo...." Huerta's bibliography is extensive, his research exhaustive, and his conclusions are always supported with substantial evidence. Even when he conjectures, he does so in an informed way. Note especially the link he makes with Vermeer's "The Astronomer" and Raphael's "Urania, Prime Mover" at the Vatican.
This book will reward those who have both a working knowlege of Vermeer and an appreciation of the history of science as well as an understanding of scientific methodology. It is an exciting addition to literature about Vermeer and builds upon the insights of Gowing and Steadman as those insights have helped to explain Vermeer's expressive "optical way."

This book is of interest to archeologists, geographers, church historians, and liturgists. Another related book that I recently skimmed is "The Land Called Holy: Palestine in Christian History and Thought" by Robert Wilken. It is a readable account fo how Christians have engaged the land of Jesus and made it their own in every political, social, and religious sense. Enjoy!
