An interesting fragment
This slight novella tells the tale of Johannes Climacus, interspersing philosophical investigation with his personal information.
Kierkegaard is considered the father of existentialism, and it is just as evident here. The attempt to impose a static philosophy on the process of becoming leads to philosophic untruth and irrelevance. There is something of aesthetic brilliance in the dialectical fortresses they construct, but no individual could ever be contained in those propositions.
It is in the form of Johannes Climacus that Kierkegaard expresses his revelation. The book is skillfully constructed and witty.
For someone interested in Kierkegaard's thought, but turned off by his monstrous, enigmatic books like Either/Or, I would recommend this book. This is philosophy that reaches the individual but never forces him into a system to regurgitate.

Love's Strategy: The Political Theology of Johann Baptist Metz

Excellent Anthology
This book offers a very good introduction into the work of Johann Baptist Metz. The work of this important Roman Catholic foundational theologian is not as well known in the United States. Dr. Downey has performed a great service making Metz's thought and methods available to Roman Catholics in the United States. Metz's arguments and proposals represent important insights into the foundational social-critcal aspects of Christianity. Such topics as "the dangerous memory of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ", "the future in the memory of suffering," and the need for a real grappling with the theological problems posed by Auschwitz are some of the important theological questions that need to be addressed by modern theology. I would liked to have seen a longer and more detailed introduction and analysis of Metz's theology by Dr. Downey. However, his overall anthology is a must read for anyone in ministry and should be required reading for theology students.

Very Interesting
A very interesting book. Birringer discusses performance art and theater in an accessible manner, that is low on academic jargon. He includes interesting asides dealing with various people and events he's come in contact with, and this is a worthwhile book for anyone interested in the arts, especially more alternative forms of art.

Meissen Porcelain of the Art Nouveau Period
Published in Hardcover by Seven Hills Book Distributors (1985)
Author: Johannes Just
Amazon base price: $24.95
Used price: $15.00

An overview of Meissen during the Jugendstil period.
A lovely edition chronicling Meissen porcelain during the Jugenstil (or Art Nouveau) period. Not comprehensive by any means, Just nevertheless makes an important statement about how the firm of Meissen succeeded in changing their traditional wares to reflect the then modern vogue. Several photographs (some color) complement the text.

More than just music...
This amply-illustrated and information-packed volume is one of those rare reference books that delivers far more than its simple title would seem to promise. In its examination of musical instruments from ancient to modern times, this multicultural exploration of mankind's musical heritage delves deep into the essence of the creative process itself. Topics include an historical overview of the evolution of musical instrumentation, detailed discussions of the instruments, music education, instrument-making, and the social and cultural context of musical instruments. In fewer than 200 easy-to-read pages, the author uses the history of music and musical instruments to explore in surprising depth the similarities and differences among our planet's many diverse cultures

A reason to learn german! (or other European language)
Johannes Mario Simmel is a terrific thriller writer right there with Tom Clancy and Patricia Cornwell. Alas, his best books are not translated in english. If you can read German or any other European language (It's translated to almost all of them), read this book.

This book is about a playboy who lives on the side of the most famous movieactress in the world. He is a covard and actually hates the woman and her child, but can't abandon the lifestyle his status brings. Until one day , the world as he knows it crashes down. He is in a very deep troble. And in love.

Great German Romantics
Mention the word "romantic" to an organist and their mind instantly turns to France and composers like Widor and Franck. It's really a pity that German romantics get shortchanged in the modern repertoire.
Dover's rugged edition presents all of Brahms' works for organ, Mendelssohn's six Sonatas and three Preludes and Fugues, and Schumann's six Fugues on B-A-C-H. These pieces are readily playable on almost any instrument and are enjoyable to play. This book will make a great addition to any organist's library.

Patrology

Author: Johannes Quasten
Amazon base price: $36.95
Used price: $19.95

Average review score:

The definitive introduction to Patrology
Quasten reviews the life and works of every Christian writer from the apostolic fathers to the end of the Patristic period. An extensive bibliography is given, containing editions of the work, translations and studies. Attention is also paid to manuscript traditions for the works. The detail is fullest for the earlier writers - later ones are still treated in a lot of detail, but volume constrains the data somewhat.

Vol I - From the Apostolic Creed to Irenaeus.

Vol II - The Ante-Nicene Literature after Irenaeus.

Vol III - The Golden age of Greek Patristic Literature.

Vol IV - The Golden Age of Latin Patristic Literature.

The first three volumes date to the mid-1950's - the last to 1986. Consequently the bibliography for the earlier volumes needs to be updated by reference to a comprehensive bibliography such as L'Annee Philologique for each author and work.

The work is a triumph of detail and essential as a starting point and reference for anyone interested in the Fathers. It is easily the quickest way to discover what works were written by which father, and where to get an edition/translation of it. Even for specialists, it will be useful as a first point of investigation. A book to return to again and again. Recommended, with the only qualification being the age of the first 3 volumes.

Piano Pieces III: 5 Studies & 51 Exercies

Not familiar with this edition
I wasnt familiar with this edition at all before i saw ordered it here. I came to like it though... the color of the pages is good/easy to look at, and the binding holds up. Also, it seems to be true to the composer. Very few fingerings were written in, so if you dont want to do it all yourself, dont get this; but if you hate marking out bad fingerings, it's fine.
