Too Gloomy
Valerie, a woman lived in Vienna, suddenly killed an Argentine chemist and then killed herself, too. Manuel, a young, heart-broken son of the chemist begins to investigate why such an unbelievable tragedy happened and finds out that Valerie fought against Nazis to save her own son many years ago and that his father was a refugee from Nazis Germany. Meanwhile, Manuel's father was involved in a very dangerous, sinister business and that endangers innocent Manuel, too.

"Es muss nicht immer Kaviar sein" written by the same author is a basically serious but outstandingly amusing novel full of humor and wit, but this novel is deadly serious and gloomy. I won't say I don't appreciate serious and gloomy novels. This novel is worth reading. Especially, the story of Valerie is very impressive. But this gloomy ending with no hope...I don't like that. Unfortunately, it seems that the most Simmel novels are deadly serious and gloomy and that "Kaviar" is a rare exception. I LOVE "Kaviar" very very very much, but I am not always a Simmel fan.

This book deals largely with measuring improvements in dexterity. because my stroke progress is hard to see inprovements, I can see the value. I was looking for tips in developing initition of my fingers and there is next to nothing on that. 4 months after, no voluntary fingermotion. just reflexes!

Interesting yet unreadable
The thesis of this book I found quite interesting and accurate: that anthropologists consider their subjects as existing in a different time from themselves, in some mythical past. However, the style of the writing seemed as if it was literally translated from the German. I found it very difficult to understand, opaque, and wondered many times why I was bothering to slog through the thing.

Beginner's Ukrainian: Iak Sia Maiesh (Beginner's Guides (New York, N.Y.).)
Published in Paperback by Hippocrene Books (1996)
Author: Johannes Poulard
Amazon base price: $11.95
Used price: $6.00
Average review score:

Iak Sia Maiesh is polish not ukrainian
Start with the basic concept that the book is titled in the incorrect language, assume then that you will not likely learn Ukrainian. I would have rated it zero stars, however that was not an option.

Of limited value...
I purchased this book to gain a basic reading knowlege of Ukrainian and was extemely disappointed. Verb conjugations and noun declensions are usefully laid out in charts, but Poulard's book lacks basic features which are necessary in any intoductory Ukrainian language text.

To start, it does not adequately explain how the verb "buty"/"to be" functions in the Ukrainian language. When it does provide a conjugation of the verb, it fails to explain that the verb, when conjugated, has a future meaning--i.e., "will be." Generally, the verb is not conjugated but rather implied in the present tense in Ukrainian. I knew there was a problem with how Poulard explained things (or rather, failed to explain things) only because I had studied Russian for several years and thus was already some basic features of Slavic linguistics. A beginning student would likely become confused by Poulard's presentation.

Another pervasive problem is the lack of accents throughout. Like Russian, Ukrainian has a complicated stress system--there is simply no way for a beginning student to figure out the proper stress for a given word without memorizing it, since stress can even shift within the declension or conjugation of a given noun or verb. Furthermore, the meaning of certain words changes altogether with a different stress. Thus, it is absolutely crucial that any introductory Ukrainian book address the problem of stress and provide accents throughout.

Unfortunately, serious language textbooks tend to be expensive because of the research, review process and specialized typesetting involved. Books like Poulard's may be more affordable, but in the long term they can actually hinder progress in language acquisition. Whether you're studying on your own or purchasing this for a class, I recommend hunting down a text by a more qualified language teaching specialist.

Not Bad, But Could Be Better
If it weren't for the fact that I already speak fluent Russian, this book would not have been very helpful to me. If you're learning Ukrainian from scratch, this book can give you the basics, but it might also confuse you. The grammar was not explained as clearly as it could have been, and I think I understood it only because of my Russian. I also can't believe that there are no accent marks for the Ukrainian words. That has been my biggest frustration, because when I try out my Ukrainian on some Ukrainian friends, I have no clue if I'm pronouncing the words correctly, and sometimes the way I say things sounds funny to them. However, this book can give you a good start if you already have experience with a slavic language. Just make sure you get a dictionary so that you'll know where the accent marks are. But if you're a beginner, you might want to look for a better book.

A Short History of Western Philosophy
Published in Textbook Binding by Westview Press (1977)
Author: Johannes. Hirschberger
Amazon base price: $34.00
Used price: $38.50
Average review score:

The discourse of Western Philosphy
Johannes Hirschberger has surely spent a lot of time in writing this book -written in German, and this book is being used by many students who are searching for a guidance into the discourse of Western Philosophy. Hirschberger has outlined the standing points of each main figures of Western though, such as Plato and Aristotle to Augustinus and Aquinas. And these points are clear and well seperated. But many students (including myself) will no doubt fall into the abysmal discourse of "how to interconnect" their thoughts to their main discourses. Philosophers may have said many things in their lives, but are outlined straight forward, but this book stresses points to the ideas and thoughts in theoretical order instead of the essential influence of themselves. In all, more cautious study and review is recommended before picking up this book as an "guidance" to the Philosophy of the West.

Not recommended
As a book that claims to shed light on Vermeers painting techniques, I found 'V & the art of Painting' pretty disappointing. Arthur Wheelock appears to be well established in the role of art critic and researcher and this perspective comes across strongly throughout the book. However there were few illustrations and the actual information on painting techniques covered in this book, appeared to me to be largely stating the obvious.
I don't think you could fault the author's background research on Vemeer and his work, but I wouldn't recommend this book to any artist or student trying to discover Vermeer's actual painting methods.

11 year old didn't like this book
i didnt perticuarly like this book.vermeer is a great artist and they didnt put many illustrations of his work.it was very informative yet not a very good book, it was boring.

Not clear at all
This book was used as a text for an intro statistics class, and proved to be completely useless. First of all it fails to explain any of the information in terms understandable by the reader, and thus is useless to anyone who doesn't already know the material. Second, the examples it does provide (few as they are) show the simplest cases possible, that do not apply the information covered in that section. The examples, if a solution is provided (oftentimes they say in one sentence that the solution should be obvious to anyone, and don't provide a solution) skip steps and are generally confusing. In summary, this book should only be used if you already understand everything in it and I would thereby rate it as a pass, unless of course you are looking for a handbook or reference.
