A Spiritual Gem!
This is one of the simplest, humblest collections of sermons I have ever read! Very practical and very insightful to the human condition and struggle on the path to loving God and giving up all for Him. It is a basic spiritual textbook of experiential, real Christian devotion. I carry it around with me since the sermons are relatively brief and can be easily read in a spare moment. Inspiring!!

The Statistical Mechanics of Financial Markets

Author: Johannes Voit
Amazon base price: $44.95

Very useful bridge between physics methodologies and finance
Very useful book, particularly in what concerns alternative L-Stable distributions. True, not too versed in financial theory but I'd rather see the author erring on the side of more physics than mathematical economics. As an author I don't ask much from books, just to deliver what they indend. This one does.

Clear historical description of Einstein/Bachelier. Hopefully one day we will call derivatives pricing the Bachelier valuation.

The book in short provides an excellent perspective on the statistical approach to asset price dynamics. Very clear and to the point.

The straits of Messina: diary of a fighter commander
Published in Unknown Binding by Deutsch ()
Author: Johannes Steinhoff
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A technically and historically accurate portrayal.
Steinhoff's career as a fighter pilot in France, the Battle of Britain, Russia, and in the Mediterranean is legendary. However, once taking over the command of JG-77 in 1943 against the combined American and British air forces, Steinhoff realized that it was now a different war, a war Germany could not win. This book explores the failure of the Luftwaffe during the Sicily and Italian campaigns following Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily. His forthwright narrative offers a clear perspective into the truth behind the German loss, and the accuracy behind the postwar propaganda surrounding the Allied victory.

Surgical Pathological Anatomy of Head and Neck Specimens: A Manual for the Dissection of Surgical Specimens From the Upper Aerodigestive Tract

Highly recommended!
This book is essential for any pathologist handling the complex resection specimens from the head and neck area. It presents the reader with a well thought-out plan to gain the best possible estimate of resection margins, relation to neighbouring structures et cetera. However, I highly recommend it to all head and neck surgeons as well, who are involved in cancer surgery. "Surgical Pathological Anatomy" will provide them with the insight, needed to discuss all pathologic reports from this area.

Symphony No. 3 in F Major, Op. 90

A Masterpiece at a Budget Price
Brahm's symphonies come from a mature period of his development, as he waited until late in his career to begin writing them. For years critics wondered aloud when he would make his mark in the symphonic repertoire, and he answer those doubters with four of the most finely-crafted pieces of romantic music.

The Third Symphony is a tour-de-force of various moods and shading. Recently, the third movement was used by Santana in collaboration with Dave Matthews for the song "Love of my life" on Supernatural. The melodies are timeless and always affecting.

If you are one who buys scores, I do not need to continue to expound on the values of Brahms. The Dover Editions are very friendly to your wallet, easy to read, and have ample margins for annotating. There is no better alternative for the money.

Tarot Basics
I'm new to tarot reading and this book was very informative and insightful for me. It goes through the basic fundamentals of tarot reading, including pictures of the different (types of) cards and their meanings/interpretations. I found the short description of the 200-year old history of tarot cards very interesting, as well as the aspects of tarot in other forms of astrology. Tarot Basics also includes 15 different lay-outs for tarot readings from the simplest to the more insightful types and includes interpretations/analysis for all of the 78 cards in a tarot deck. Reading this book made me want to run out and buy my own deck of cards and start conducting my own readings! Great for a beginner like me. Enjoy!

Details, Background, Beauty
The reproductions of the paintings are beautiful, and that is what we buy an art book. The author has fascinating details to relate and he is lively and impassioned in style! He writes about Vermeer's "suspended psychological moment". John Nash divides the paintings into Music, Letters, etc. He shows the works of master painters of Delft of the time and how they treat similar subjects. Nash also has Biography, Patrons and Style.

Vermeer and His Peers
Is there anything new to say about the great Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer? Scholars have been obsessed with his paintings for years. To my delight, this book by Bryan Jay Wolf actually offers fresh insight into the issues that preoccupied the artist--and well as other Dutch painters in the seventeenth century. Issues of commerce, domesticity, private space, gender--and new innovations in technique, some of the most important in the entire history of painting.

The book is wonderfully illustrated, not just with images by Vermeer, but also by de Hooch, Metsu, Luiken, Netscher, Ter Borch, Rubens, Dou, van Hoogstraten, and Steen--and closer to our own time, paintings by Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, even Charles Addams--as Wolf explains the lasting impact of this strange and elusive artist. A must for anyone interested in Vermeer or in the social history of Dutch art.

Vermeer: Consciousness and the Chamber of Being
Published in Paperback by Umi Research Pr (1984)
Author: Martin Pops
Amazon base price: $41.00
Average review score:

Brilliant analysis of Vermeer's work... the best yet!
This book looks at Vermeer's works in a beautiful and compelling light. He compares and contrasts Vermeer's life works and takes a look at women and their relationship with the world. Some are peacefully stong and centered-- compared even to Madonna's and various Annunciation scenes. Other women are caught up in the world-- off balance and looking astray. He creates wonderful visuals through his words... but also includes pictures of Vermeer's work with side sketches showing the use of space and converging lines. One of the best art analysis books I've read.
