This edition of the New King James Bible sort of jumps out of the store shelves at you. It is obviously paperback (though the cover is made of an attractive, sort of nylonish coated paper for durability, and there's also a thick page separating the title page and last page of the book from the two covers which gives it a further feel of being more durable than the average paperback), but for a paperback Bible it's the best of the lot. It's the just right dimensions as well. It has black print, easy-to-read type which is very inviting also. The translation itself is the one many of the King James only types settle for as being the next best thing to the inspired King James. It was translated from the same manuscript sources. (The NIV and the New American Standard Bible were translated from more modern, critically edited manuscripts that many believe distort the actual Word of God in places, but that argument often hinges on very small and few changes.) Some editions of Bibles are just more inviting to pick up and start reading, and this one falls into the very inviting category.

In the realm of Bible translation, the New King James Version is among the best of the crop. Truer to its sources (its main issue being that it chooses not to use the most modern sources available to Bible scholars today) than the popular NIV, and more readable than the New American Standard Bible or the King James Version, the NKJV is simply a good translation for reading or study, and one of my favorites. It is comfortable for those raised on the KJV (people who were have told me so), and at the same time good for those who have not read the KJV since they could read.

The modest Reader's Edition is simple, graphically appealing, and contains a minimum of extra material. It's presented in an attractive, readable font, and is a respectable Bible for personal or study use. If you know someone with a spiritual hunger or thirst, this NKJV may be just the solution, as long as it's taken seriously in regular doses. Worth it all the way.

Some will dispute what is the best version of the word. Bottom line is you need to read the Bible. Find a version that works for you and Read it! After that you can explore the other translations. (I nice approach to reading the Bible cover to cover, for the first time, is "The One Year Bible", which is divided into 365 readings that only take a few minutes a day!) The NKJV is a readable version of the most referenced version of the Bible. The translation is moderized enough so it will be easier to understand. This is a good version to give to others at a good price, ...

With two young children I found this book both very informative and easy to read. It is an excellent addition to my home library.

I just got this book as a present, for my baby shower. I hope I never need to use it, but it has really cool information in it. Like, all the stuff about ear infections, which every kid I know seems to get. And the best thing is, it looks like you can find everything really easy in it. Like, you don't have to spend hours going through the index.

I'm buying this as a gift for all of my friends who are expecting. It will take them through infancy to teens and beyond--the info in here is applicable to adults as well. It's just such as nice, easy to read book, chock full of great info. It covers everything from a simple scrape to the real serious stuff.

With energy, wit, and clarity, the author examines the role that Western thought has had in had the degradation of the earth, depletion of its natural resources, and the exploitation and domination of the "savages" in "developing" countries. Keith integrates feminist theory in his framework, providing a fresh and compassionate perspective. This book is critical reading for both the layperson and the policy maker interested in sustainable development.

Recently, I was informed of this book by a colleague I met at a conference in San Francisco. I could not put it down. In this truly remarkable book, Keith brings together trends marginalized by the worldview that holds the 'developed'and the 'modern'as dominant. He shows us the outlines of a possible, emerging world, one characterized not by dominance and subordination among nations, peoples, and developmental processes, but bty a genuine interdependence. This emerging world is to be undergirded by a philosophy and political agenda he terms 'globalism,' one anchored to 'difference.' The author carefully distinguishes globalism from globalization and internationalism, calling it the "normative component of the spirit [rather than the project] of the Enlightenment." (p.27)and "both an outgrowth of and a reaction to modernity." (p.31). Globalism, in other words, a more truly egalitarian vision that eschews the binary opposites (Self-Other) created by the Enlightenment's take on reason. These 'Other{s),'who include non-Western and Third World peoples, women, peoples ofcolor, and even Nature, who were relegated to the status of non-being by modernity, are now taking their place as agents in the joint emancipation of Self-Other through the practices, ethics, and epistemology of difference. Keith's argument is complex and is impossible to do justice to it in a 1000 words. It is truly a masterful of interdisciplinary scholarship that is rarely seen today; one marvels at his range, depth, and impressive abilities to synthesize in a fashion that excites so much about the inquiring mind. Although the book resides at a fairly high level of abstraction, it also suggests kindred practices. In the end, Keith draws a sketch that remains to be filled in through more research along the fruitful lines he sketches. People who are truly interested in change in our globalized age must get this impressive piece of scholarship.

this work amplifies and moves to legitimate difference as a wittgensteinian call back to "the rough ground!" keith's turn to the other elucidates a notion of interdependence -- but he "flips the script" on us first-worlders;it is we that are dependent on this difference, on those that we feel are dependent upon us. he takes us thru a historical/hermeneutic tour de force in order to situate the roots of how we came to think the way we do...the book is worth the price just for its 100+ page bibliography (impressive breadth)...very suggestive and challenging...

It was so nice to find a book I can use as a refrence for trips and activities in the North Shore area. It's a great book to pull out when planning weekend entertainment for out of town friends and relatives, and it is a perfect idea generator for those days when the kids think there is 'nothing to do."

I've lived in this area for 10 years and have barely begun to scratch the surface of all the region has to offer. Liz Nelson's little book is now my official personal guidebook to the historic and adventure-filled Massachusetts north shore.

The places she takes me to visit range from the extraordinary (quirky historic homes with unusual architecture and jaw-dropping memorabilia) to the serene (quiet walks amid sea spray roses in search of eagles and seals) to the ridiculous (snow tubing down a ten-story-high hill of ice!?!) to the adventuresome (whale watching!) The SIDS Survival Guide was my beacon of light during the darkest part of my life. My son, Dominic, passed away from SIDS on April 10, 2001, at only 4 1/2 months young. I began to reach out and search for all the information I could find on SIDS, drinking it all in by the bucket. A few months after he died, I found "The SIDS Survival Guide", and am so incredibly thankful. There was so much information, so many stories so like my own. I shed many tears while reading it for the first time, and even now, when I go back to read sections, I still cry. I am now expecting our second child in June 2002, and am scared to death. But knowing that I am informed about SIDS is somewhat of a comfort to me; in a way, I am as prepared as I can ever be. I would recommend this book to anyone expecting a child, who has a young baby, or knows someone who is or does.

My husband and I lost our son to SIDS in September of 2000. Our souls have been torn. The grieving process over his death has been draining. I recall little over the past 4+ months since his death. The one thing I do recall is thinking I was going crazy. I had wished their was another SIDS survivor I could speak with. Someone who could possibly relate to what my husband and I were going through. Someone who could understand our emotions. I searched under the keyword SIDS and found this book. I have not read the book in its entirety. I have read the sections I have needed at the particular times in my grieving. This book has helped me confirm that I am not going crazy. What I am feeling, though very personal, is normal. I feel this book is a neccesity for any parent who has to suffer this terrible tragedy. I have placed an order of these books in my babies memory to send to my state SIDS Coordinator in hopes that other parents may find comfort in its contents. Thank you Joani and Robin.

This book is one of the best for SIDS information

This book is the latest valuable resource added to my library. As the Ten Commandments are a reflection of the character of God, any Christian who desires to conform himself or herself to the character of God would be wise to pick up this book. It is a practical resource for addressing many of the issues that Christians face as we strive to be holy just as God is holy. The book is very readable. It is not theologically burdensome or complicated, but it maintains biblical accuracy while being easily understandable and straightforward. Overall, the book is agreeable. I found that Douma's practical conclusions were good, though naturally, I do not agree with every one of them. Nevertheless, every conclusion is well researched and is presented in a graceful way. The reader is left with the burden of accepting his conclusions or proving that scripture speaks differently. Along this line, Douma is concerned with transforming the church. His focus seems to be in educating the church on the implications of the Ten Commandments, which is a noteworthy goal in light of the modern Christian popular culture that seems to overlook educating the church and shoots straight for modifying government policy. Most importantly, the grace of God through Jesus Christ is central to Douma's message; through Christ alone do we have grace and peace with God as well as the power to obey the commandments. This is neither a legalistic nor a moralistic book, but one focused on educating a thankful believer with the result being obedience to God's commandments (John 14:21).

How many times have you heard someone mindlessly repeat "Christians are no longer under law, but under grace"? This is usually a poor excuse that means "I haven't bothered to study the law, and I want a catchphrase that will excuse my current behavior." If you want a clear exposition that gives you not only an understanding of the commandments, but their relevance for us today, look no further. Jochem Douma has produced an excellent treatment (in Dutch), and Nelson Kloosterman's translation is very readable. The prologue to the book--dealing with covenants, rules for interpretation of Scripture, etc.--is worth the price of the book. This is an ideal volume for a Sunday school class or Bible study; each chapter is moderate length, and lends itself to discussion. You really shouldn't be without this one!

Very practical, scholarly and well-footnoted.

The story is told in a personal way: in episodes. It both holds your interest and engages you to share in the thoughts and feelings of the professional military who served in Vietnam. The novel introduces historic struggles for power among the Vietnamese people as a backdrop of activity creating an unforgettable perspective of our forces' departure. Its rare to be entertained and also be presented with a perspective to help clarify your thinking of the war. This books shows how integrity was so strongly tested and yet prevailed in the conduct of many Vietnamese and American officers. A quick read-but with lasting images! The fact that the Naval Officer who is the main character displays such total disregard for his personal safety by infinging on a Marine Officer's relationship with a woman is unrealistic.He'd have been harmed!

I really enjoyed reading this book. Dr. Nelson has certainly contributed a refreshing and enduring perspective to the Vietnam War experience. Starting from his offshore involvement of the Vietnam War to his hands-to-hands combat with the enemy guerrillas deep in the killer forest, Commander Blake Lawrence is a classic American warrior who despite his apathy for the war received and returned the call of duty for democracy with grace and dignity. This book is beautifully written with concrete details of the country, the people, and the thrilling events of Vietnam. After reading the first few pages of the book I found it's difficult to put down as each additional readings lead on to more intrigue and suspense. Even though Blake only served in the war of Vietnam for three years the intensity of characters and the events as told by Dr. Nelson strike a resounding chord in generations of veterans past, present, and future to the conflicting values of society, family, and self that a warrior must endure to survive. I truly recommend this book to all those who want to find out more about the complex struggles for a nation and the sacrifices and ordeals that must be paid for its unending resolution.

The Advisor is not only a fast-paced action novel, it also contains a moving story. I was impressed by the altered views about Vietnam that I had after reading The Advisor. The author clearly knows his history of the country and its people. Overall, I felt that The Advisor was instructive while also an exciting adventure, with memorable characters and action scenes tied to the story--not just thrown in to keep the reader's attention. The book is filled with details that add depth to understanding those tumultuous times,and the clear compassion the author holds for the people who were forced to fight in them. This is fine novel. By all means, read it. You won't feel the same about Vietnam.

I bought this as a reference guide, but found I had a great deal of difficulty putting it down. The explanations are comprehensive, informative and not only guide you through the bible, but give you a history of the people and their time.

If you are a student of the Bible and you can only afford one quality Bible dictionary, get this one. If you already have another dictionary, get this one - it will soon become your favorite. Big, colorful, READABLE print and index - it is exactly what a student needs to find things fast and to have a clear explanation when he finds it. Worth the investment.

This is an excellent resource for anyone who desires a one volume, comprehensive dictionary of all things biblical. The entries are arranged in alphabetical order and cover nearly every theme and topic imaginable. The book has those one would expect (e.g. Trinity, Jesus), as well as information that is more specialized (e.g. a 5-page entry on biblical minerals). If something is mentioned in the Bible then it should be here. After all, there are over 7,000 entries and many are several pages long. It contains entries on non-biblical topics too (e.g. Philo and Josephus). My favorite articles are those on the books of the Bible (primarily the Protestant canon, although there is an entry on the apocrypha). They examine such issues as authorship, dating, content, and theology. All of the entries are scholarly, informative, and for the most part, written in "layman's terms." Many famous scholars have contributed, including F.F. Bruce and Daniel Wallace. There are cross-references to the major bible translations including the NIV, KJV, NRSV, and REB. The notes are non-denominational and usually well balanced and are written from an evangelical, conservative Protestant standpoint. For readers interested in a more critical approach, I would recommend the Oxford Companion to the Bible.

There are other reasons to buy this book too. The introduction explains how best to use the dictionary and includes a good survey of biblical history and theology in chart form. There are hundreds of full color maps, pictures, and photographs to illuminate the written words. For example, under the entry for Pontius Pilate there is a photograph of an inscription from a Roman theater bearing his name. There is a section containing maps too. Also, the type size is enlarged for easier reading. Overall, this is a great resource, especially for Christians who want to know more about the people, places, things, and doctrines of the Bible.

Padre Pio, one of the most renowned modern-day Blesseds, was a very holy man loved by many people. The charisms he was blessed with by the Holy Spirit are truly amazing to read about, including bilocation, the odor of sanctity, as well as his most famous gift, the stigmata. The accounts of miracles attributed to his intercession are unbelieveable, and I'm sure they're just a small amount of the great deeds this man has done. This man seems MORE than a man, forgetting to eat meals, having great favor with the Lord, and sometimes being invisible from others. He comforted many dying souls in their last agony. This is a great compilation of the wonders of the great Blessed Padre Pio.

This was an excellent book, Examples of many, many miracles, Many insights to the wisdom and knowledge of heaven. Wonderful book.

Padre Pio was canonized St. Pio of Pietrelcina on June 16, 2002. There are many books written about him, and this is one of the best and most complete. He was a Capuchin friar born in southern Italy in 1887 and died in 1968. He bore the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, for 50 years. He also possessed other unusual qualities, such as bilocation, odor of perfume, the reading of hearts, miraculous cures, remarkable conversions and prophetic insight. Because of his ability to read hearts many people sought to confess their sins to him. Although he heard confessions for 12 to 14 hours a day, it was necessary to register 10 days in advance because so many people desired his spiritual direction.

I highly recommend this book and also "Stories of Padre Pio" by Madame Katharina Tangari.

I found "The Sergeant's Lady" to be a fast and lively read. It really transported me to a different time and place. Not being familiar with this genre, I was impressed with the detail and accuracy of the descriptions of everything from the most mundane activites of the common soldier to the exciting and horrific battle scenes. I cared about the characters in the novel and felt, by the end of the story, that I had come away with a better understanding of both the cavalry and the Indian warriors and the hardships they had to endure. I wholeheartedly recommend "The Sergeant's Lady".

Miles Hood Swarthout comes by his western sensibilities honestly: His father, Glendon Swarthout -- author of "The Shootist" and "Bless the Beasts and the Children" -- was in the vanguard of the "new" western literary novelists who blended history, landscape and character in a fresh way.

Miles' new novel, "The Sergeant's Lady," is literally in that tradition, based upon one of his father's stories. It has all the hallmarks of a good, traditional western adventure, and the literary flourish of contemporary western writers. His beautiful writing and fast-paced action-adventure take us back to those golden days of yore, when good stories had both.
