After getting stationed in Georgia back in 1997, I became interested in the cause of the Southern Unionists. As a CivWar reenactor I found this subject to be on one hand totally verbotten for polite fireside conversation. On the other, some interest but little information. Thank God over the last few years several books have come out to help fill that info gap. The South vs The South(poorest of the group), Lincoln's Loyalists, and Guerillas, Unionists,& Violence On the Confederate Homefront(very good!) have done alot for these forgotten souls. The best remains Lincoln's Loyalists, my orginal was permantly borrowed by a "rebel" buddy and passed about throughout the greyback community. Finally I've found another copy! Even for hardcore seesch, this book is a must read for anyone studying this sad chapter of our nations history.

Most readers will probably be astonished to learn how extensive support for the Union was among white southerners during the Civil War. The author provides a detailed, state-by-state description of organized military units from the southern states that fought for the Union. A final chapter summarizes the statistics -- something that I found particularly helpful. I hope that many southerners will read this book and be inspired to seek out their own Loyal ancestors. This chapter of southern history desperately needs to be better known.

White Southerners who fought for the Union are the neglected heroes of the Civil War. Their Northern comrades could return home to a heroes' welcome. Their Confederate foes went home to lick their wounds and glorify their "Lost Cause." Soldiers of the "Colored" regiments are getting their due. But most people have bought the lie that the South and the Confederacy were synonymous.

The South has countless Confederate memorials. Where are the memorials for the brave men who fought for their country instead of being seduced by the lies of the Slave Power?

This is a *delightful* computer book. Highly recommended for people who have never used computers before. It is simply well-written and easy to follow. It's non-threatening, and has something to offer both novices and long time computer users.

I teach Windows95 course for beginners, after reading this book, I couldn't pick a better book for them to start out with. Very well written, I just wish I had wrote it.

Whoever thought you would buy a software manual for the prose? This book is beautifully written and should serve as an object lesson to tech writers everywhere. And yes, it has everything you need to know about Windows 95, presented with care and clarity.

Machiavelli's Republican should prove to be an eye opener for any critical citizen. It is an excellent vehicle for stating what many of us have already intuited for years. I would recommend it highly to anyone who is serious about wading through the manufactured morass of "PoliSpeak and PoliDo" that is modern American politics.

Dr. Blue's, through the personna of Machiavelli, depicts the Republican philosophical platform and their methods in a clear and irrefutable form.

What this book is missing is an expanded view of how Machiavellian thinking affects all of American politics and not just the Republican Party form of it.

As an anthropologist trained in Alaska, I recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand something more of what they see in Alaska than they can get from a tour guide. It will enhance your sensitivity to the power and mystery of Alaska and you'll see more than you would have if you hadn't read it.

A fresh direction for anthropological study that is from the "inside." The author lives "among" the people and learns from them, taking pains to distinguish the influence of "western" cultural values. The relationship between this "outsider" and the people who recieve him among them should be the model for all such explorations.

I really enjoyed Nelson's book and found it helpful in my research on the Koyukon people. This is ed in specifics. Nelson presents a sensitive and unbiased ethnography that is well written and enjoyable to read.

I am eleven years old, and I love Miss Nelson Has a Field Day because it was funny and interesting. I liked it when Miss Viola Swamp called one boy, "Smarty". It made me laugh!! I think other kids should read this because it is a really good book. I think it is even better than the first two Miss Nelson books. All kids would love this book!!

This is a truly delightful series that the whole family can enjoy. Good stories, great characters and the indomitable Miss Nelson all add up to great fun and great reading for kids.

My daughter loved this book. She was not an avid reader a couple summers ago but this one was a favorite. She likes all the Miss Nelson books but she was able to write a summary on this one and have all the information correct so she was paying attention. If it is on your summer reading list for school, go for it, it's worth it.

This large and attractive book was created by the Discovery Channel, to tell the story of the Battle of the Nile. Brimming with details, the book tells the story of the French Revolution and the life of Napoleon Bonaparte, followed by the life of Horatio Nelson, and the exciting finale: a minute-by-minute retelling of the Battle of the Nile in 1798. Along the way, the reader is treated to many excellent pictures, charts and graphs, not to mention a plethora of highly informative sidebars.

This is a wonderful book, one that will please readers that know nothing about the subject, and those that know a lot. I am very glad that I was able to get ahold of it, and highly recommend it to you!

Accompanying a Discovery episode, the book tells the story of Napoleon's conquest of Egypt, and his Battle of the Nile with Lord Nelson. Beautifully illustrated, the authors dramatically relate the surrounding events in a detailed and clear style. A final chapter about excavations by Frank Goddio and his underwater team has provided marvelous photographs and much information about recent discoveries. Definitely a must-read for all interested in historical events, Napoleon, marine archaeology and Egypt.

As a history buff and Discovery Channel fan, I really loved this book

What a bottomless well of encouragement and inspiration one gets from its reading! Nelson Mandela, basing himself on the mass of Black, Colored and Indian, workers, peasants and other democrats of South Africa, was unbreakable at the hands of the horrific, murderous and terrorist system of aparthied. Akin to Nazis Germany, the Jim Crow USA South and Zionist Israel, South Africa enjoyed the backing of the US and British and Israeli governments until it was overthrown.

Joining the African National Congress in 1944 at age 26, he and other youth would lead its transformation from and organization of " gentlemen with clean hands" to the mass revolutionary democratic movement that would lead the revolution over apartheid. Doing so even while in prison for nearly 30 years. He was finally released in 1990 at age 72 and was soon after elected South Africa's president.

For decades, a popular demand in South Africa and around the world was: Free Nelson Mandela! This book does an excellent job of showing just why Mandela was so popular among the masses in his country and so feared and hated by apartheid's rulers. He was a first-class revolutionary who fought for decades for his country's freedom and always believed in the power of the masses of people to make change. This book is so inspiring because you read Mandela in his own words, starting as a student leader in the 1940s to a leader of the African National Congress's armed wing in the 1960s to an internationally known political prisoner in the 1980s. He never gave up and he outlasted the vicious apartheid system. The photos in the book also do a great job of showing what the struggle against apartheid was like.

What a wonderful experience-- reading and studying speeches and documents prepared by Nelson Mandela during five decades of struggle against the apartheid regime in South Africa! Here are key documents of the African National Congress, including the Freedom Charter that became the central document of the mass movement that brought down apartheid. Also Mandela's speeches at different stages of the struggle, including historic courtroom addresses when he was on trial for his life; documents Mandela prepared as the apartheid regime was forced to negotiate with him and the ANC in the late 1980s; and his first speeches after he was released from prison in 1990.
These speeches give a vivid reminder of the brutal, racist regime that was apartheid (and we should never forget that the South African regime was a pillar of U.S. domination in Africa from the 1940s on.) Mandela gives us a real feel for the determined, difficult, and courageous struggle of millions of people who never accepted submission to apartheid and the world-wide importance of the fight for a democratic, nonracial South Africa. And you see truly inspiring leadership in the persons of Mandela and his fellow leaders in the ANC.

This book is excellent reading and research material for anyone searching for solid answers to questions about how everything fits together in the Bible. It covers the different people, trades, lifestyle, geography with maps, etc. It is tabbed for fast research. My daughter said that just reading the first 20 pages explained more to her than she had ever understood about Biblical times and customs. This book is great to just read from cover to cover and then refer to as you study the Bible, both old and new testament. It enlightens the study to a more understandable text for the common person.

This book has everything you could want from a bible encyclopedia. It focuses mainly on religion and history. It has a book by book discription of each book in the Bible. It talks about ancient cultures and civilizations. There are color markers on the upper right hand corner to help you to find what you need to find on other pages in the book. It has large lifelike pictures and illustrations. The questions and answers in the book are interesting. It is just a good all around book. I defenately would recommend this book for anybody who want to understand the background of the Bible as much as possible.

I love this book. For a general overview of the Bible, this is the best! Lots of 4-color pictures and super interesting commentary. I read it cover to cover. Another great book is THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OF PROVERBS by Cody Jones. The comments are interesting and put things into a historical setting. Many Biblical characters are pointed out who illustrate King Solomon's witty observations on human nature. Many of the riddles and mysteries of Proverbs are explored with surprising new answers.

I agree with the last reviewer that Joel Hayward's book "FOR GOD AND GLORY" is much better than this book in terms of assessing Lord Nelson as a naval warrior and military commander. Hayward's book is an instant classic! It will be much discussed by Nelson enthusiasts for years to come. Buy it!

But that should not detract from a positive review of this book by Edgar Vincent, which is a more traditional biographical-type book that is very well done. Vincent does a very nice job indeed of narrating Lord Neloson's life and romances. He adds little to what we already know, that is true, but he nonetheless writes with such flair that even the well-known story seems fresh and entertaining.

This book, if a comparison needs to be made, is better than Christopher Hibbert's, and is written with more fluency than Oman's classic biography. I rate it highly.

This is not the best new book on Lord Nelson. That honour goes to a book that, because it's not published and promoted by such a lucrative publisher, probably won't sell as well as this one.

That is a pity, because Joel Hayward's FOR GOD AND GLORY: LORD NELSON AND HIS WAY OF WAR is undoubtedly the most original and thought-provoking book on Nelson written in twenty or thirty years. I strongly recommend it.

This book, by Mr Vincent, has a very different focus. It follows a well-trodden path, adding little to the view of Nelson put forward by Pocock, White, Oman and Warner. It deals with Nelson's personal life and almost pscho-analyses his personality. This can be irritating, even if Mr Vincent's treatment is generally fair.

The author knows little about the Georgian navy and the warfare of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods. Reader wanting to know about this should consult Hayward, White and Brian Lavery.

But as a biography, as opposed to analytical naval analysis, this book is entertaining and well written. Nelson as a man emerges from the pages as an odd little fellow, but a charming and brilliant one.

Overall this this a good biography about Nelson, however the author spends a bit too much time describing Nelson's private life. According to Vincent, Nelson was a compassionate and thoughtful leader at sea, but very immature in his relationships with women. Nelson had a difficult relationships with his first wife Fanny, and Nelson dicarded her in favor of Emma Hamilton who displayed the same childish traits as the Admiral. Vincent belives, that Nelson was never man enough to face Fanny over his infidelity since he constantly ignored Fanny's passionate appeals to rebuild the relationship. Vincent argues that Nelson decisively won the battles of St.Vincent, the Nile, and Trafalgar, but was saved at Copenhagen by the death of Tsar Paul I that led to the Danish government agreeing to British demands. One of the most interesting chapters of the book is Vincent's defense of Neslon's suppression of the rebels in Naples. Vincent states that Nelson was only just following orders from the British and Neopolitain governments and the rebel deaths were miniscule compared to those massacred by the French and their allies. I would reccomend this book to anyone who wants a book that describes Nelson's personal life but also includes his battles and the controversory about the Admiral's actions in Naples.

A true marvel. Not many writers come close. Nelson Algren is at the very top of the heap: original, compassionate, funny, insightful. You know, we read many books, and once we have finished with the book we toss it aside and forget about it. With Algren it's different. You read his stuff and can't help feeling cheated at not having known the man, not having ever had a chance to meet the guy. Wish there was a way to sit down and have a beer with the man, light up a stogie and have a good chat with the genius who created this masterful story collection. The writing is gritty and true, heartfelt. Brings to mind several other writers who had this knack of writing in this kind of honest, unflinching style: John O'Brien (Leaving Las Vegas), B. Traven (take your pick: Treasure of Sierra Madre, Cottonpickers, etc.) Knut Hamsun (Hunger), Eugene O'Neill (Long Day's Journey Into Night), Celine (Journey to the End of the Night), Kirk Alex (Working the Hard Side of the Street), Chester Himes (If He Hollers Let Him Go).
All of the above had their own style, of course, but the thing they had in common was in the balls they showed by not flinching away from the gritty, life lived by so many who weren't born with deep pockets, who didn't have it easy.

Writing from the gut. Algren lives. Read THE NEON WILDERNESS, and give some of the others a try as well.

Algren's writing in this collection of short stories has very lyrical and often nightmarish quality. It is both beautiful and brutally frank. Algren paints a unapologetic picture of Chicago and it's people with his wonderful sense of humor and irony. Read this book if you want an unblinking look at people at their best and worst.

One of the most beautiful collection of short stories I've ever read. I am a devoted Nelson Algren fan, and if you read this, you'll understand why. This was a man who understood Chicago, who had the balls to plunge the murky depths of her society and find astonishing beauty. The blue imagery of his work is evocative, breathtaking, and genuine; it makes me mourn and long for a Chicago that no longer exists. The masculinity, the authority, the depth of Algren's identification with the rejects, the drug addicts, the gamblers, the hookers make WILDERNESS a superb work of art. This man tells it like it was; no glamorizing, no condescension, only the most profound understanding and a multi-layered sense of humor that, to paraphrase Hemingway (a huge Algren fan), makes you feel as if you took a punch. I haven't read the NEON WILDERNESS in a long time, but the mere mention of it makes we want to re-read it, especially the first story, "The Captain Has Bad Dreams." I also recommend BOSS by Mike Royko and just about anything by Studs Terkel.
