A Phenomenological Event
Dr Philip Blosser of Lenoir-Rhyne College has truly arranged a definitive study of Max Scheler's critique of Kantian ethics. Not only does this book elucidate Kantian formalism and Schelerian axiology, it also provides a necessary historical context for the Kantian legacy and Scheler's assessment of Kant's formalism. Moreover, Blosser's expertise in phenomenological thought and value theory shines through in this distinctive and peerless work. I have read the book twice and still often consult it in my studies when trying to comprehend Kantian ethics. Pick up this monograph and add it to your library. It is a phenomenological event!

The Best of Scheler's studies!
I am not exagerating. As a postgraduate student fond of the philosophy of Max Scheler, I am dare to say I have read most of Scheler's studies in English. Of course, they are not large in number, actually. But I really find Prof. Blosser's investigation the superb of them, no matter the scope and the depth and the clarity of his analysis. And he is always eager to put the things in the context of contemporay philosophy, telling us what on earth is the true meaning of Scheler's insight to us.

This philosophical masterpiece has changed my life forever!
The pure and awe-inspiring brilliance of Dr. Philip Blosser bursts forth from these pages like academic napalm. This book is a true gem penned in excellence by one of the greatest minds to ever grace the realm of philosophy. It should be thankfully discovered by one and all.

A very charming book
I first read "Seven Men" a few years back when Harold Bloom listed it as essential reading in his book on the Western canon.

The book consists of short fictional portraits of various characters in the world of Edwardian arts and letters. Beerbohm was a satirist with a nimble touch -- he had the ability to poke fun at the pretensions of the art world while maintaining a gentle, bemused humanism.

Sir Max seemed to view the vanity and foibles of human nature not so much with scorn as with an endless amusement, and reading any of his essays or parodies or satires is like spending the evening chatting with a wise and witty friend.

Beerbohm once wrote, "How many charming talents have been spoiled by the instilled desire to do 'important' work! Some people are born to lift heavy weights. Some are born to juggle with golden balls." Beerbohm was an admitted juggler, and yet his seemingly "light" work is ultimately more insightful than most so-called serious projects. And often much funnier.

Beerbohm was also quite a caricaturist, and his theater reviews (many out of print) are still great to read all these decades later.

Get hold of this book and start off with the classics "Enoch Soames," the story of a third-rate poet who, convinced of his own greatness, makes a deal with the Devil in order to travel to the future to enjoy his posthumous success (with comic results), and "Savonarola Brown," a hilarious sketch of a frustrated playwright and his great "unfinished" opus.

Beerbohm's contemporaries referred to him as "the incomparable Max," and it's a title that fits. I wish I could've met him.

A fun survey of literary circle evolution
The essay/sketches which are presented in Seven Men And Two Others begin as the author's memories of London literary life at the turn of the century and move into satire and parody as Beerbohm comments on authors, critics and literary circles alike. Seven Men And Two Others is a revealing achievement and a fun survey of literary circle evolution.

Enoch Soames
In addition to being a wonderful work of literature, Seven Men has the advantage of being not totally fictional. One of the seven actually existed. For those interested, I would refer you to the Nov 1997 issue of Atlantic Monthly.

Easy to read, hard to ignore
Max Landsberg succeeds in translating the essentials of coaching into a simple story and a few tables and graphics. It is easy to read, but once you've read it, the actual thinking begins. The somewhat unusual approach Landsberg takes introduces various aspects of coaching (such as receiving and giving feedback, overcoming coaching blocks) as elements of someone's career, providing the reader with instant examples.

I really learned a lot from this book and felt inspired.
The coaching techniques and examples provided in the book are outstanding. By applying these techniques to your everyday activities you will definately see a positive change.

Gave me the courage to try, with superior results
Placed in the leadership role for a high performance team undertaking a "McKinsey-ish" strategy study I found myself very challenged. Having spotted this book at an airport bookshop I read it on the plane. I put its suggestions into place, starting from the front of the book, and worked my way through the chapters as they were appropriate. I had it on my desk for the entire 4-month study. It bought immediate results for the team, and me by achieving greater cohesion of energy yet releasing greater diversity of thought especially during the inductive phase of the study. During the deductive stages it helped us focus on a team-based outcome without leaving people out of the decision-making process that had to be managed to a schedule. I firmly believe that without this book we would not have achieved the results we did - the pressure was intense and teams have a tendency to blow themselves apart after the final report is in. The team would not have continued to work as a coherent whole on subsequent phases of my study. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to lead a high performance team. Landsberg's@examples and his obvious experience come through well, and they gave me the courage to try what the book suggests with my team. Well worth the cost.

A worthwhile surrealist object
It figures that a couple months after I hunt up a copy, this becomes readily available.

It's a fascinating book. The collages are made of illustrations from lurid French novels popular at the time. The edges of the different cut and pasted pictures look seamless, and Ernst has a great design sensibility. The introduction is useful, if short.

The surrealist aesthetic toward women--that is, surrealist art (including that by women) constantly shows female figures, generally nudes, as victims or in suffering--is particularly visible here, probably helped by the source matter. It's significant that the major female artists involved in the movement, such as Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, and Dorthea Tanning, tended not to produce much until they had been seperated from the heart of the movement for years. It's the major flaw in the movement's thinking, but that doesn't stop this from being an intriguing book for occasional contemplation.

The original title pages are reproduced in facsimile and translated.

Une Semaine De BontE : A Surrealistic Novel in Collage
One of the best books I own. Inspirational, in a way -- like mind taffy. Something about the pictures and the little bit of text makes you want to make connections. Like life itself. Forster said: "Only connect." Absolutely fantastic.

Provocative, evocative, brilliant.
I found a copy of this in a museum in Berlin last year and not a day has gone by that I haven't opened it up to stare at the images and the mad, deliciously nightmarish stories they tell.

Teaching Tool
I have taught Sunday School for nearly 15 years. I have always been critical of curriculum available for teachers. There are many good books but few with good curriculum. Walk This Way is the best book I have ever used! Tim Woodruff not only has a way of making the Beatitudes come alive, but his packaging of his message is brilliant. If you want to undertand the essence of the message of Christ, buy this book! If you want to share the Gospel with others, buy this book! If you are a teacher of young or old or in between, teach the Beatitudes and buy this book as your guide. It is the best teaching tool I have ever used.

Excellent Book
Tim Woodroof has written a wonderful, thought-provoking book on the Beatitudes. The book is an excellent resource for preaching, teaching, and group discussions. I came across the book while planning a sermon series on the beatitudes and found Tim's creative approach, picturesque language, and writing style irresistable. Had I known about the book earlier, I would have used it as a study and discussion guide for the entire church to use as a compliment to the sermon series. There is plenty of material for class, discussion groups, and individual daily study. The book is not only strong on content, but on creative imagery, illustrations, and word pictures that help the message of the beatitudes come alive. It is also especially strong on application.

Excellent book- helped teach me about being Christ's discipl
I've never read a book that taught me so much. Much of my life I skimmed over Jesus' first words to his disciples, but Walk This Way dove deep into the meaning that Jesus had for his disciples back then as well as for his disciples today. I believe this book is God inspired, and will help change your life concerning your relationship with Christ and the world around you. After reading it through 3 times, I am now using it as a study guide to teach a Sunday School class. The book does a good job in helping to facilitate discussions within a group.

You are in for a spiritual treat
If you have never read any of Max's books, I urge you to do so. His writing style is easy to read, and you will learn things about God painlessly. I am reading Just Like Jesus and I can't put it down. I am underlining so much and taking notes, what insight! An enjoyable yet informative read. I can't hardly put the book down. Thanks Max for all you do.

The opinion of my better half
I have still not been able to get this book away from my wife long enough to read it. She is VERY impressed with it, and in fact is buying ten more copies to give to friends and loved ones.
We have read several of Max Lucado's books, but this is one of the best (I am told).

Thank You Max
The inspiration, humour and pure joy I received when reading books by Max Lucado cannot be counted. Max has helped me answer many questions in my walk with God. He is funny, and Max, I have to say you have a case of "stuckititis" with me. I am looking forward to my next purchase of a Max Lucado next week. Your penmanship, your ministry, and your love for humankind shows in your writings. I thank God that I have found this treasure.

Thank you Max

A powerful and original novel.
The Angel Max is a truly original novel, written in a prose that is at once detached and cool, intelligent and compassionate, sensitive and perceptive. Much of the power of the novel comes from the tone of this prose, but the story itself is powerful as well. It's one of the best novels I've read in recent years.

Also a great literary novel
Besides being an engrossing historical novel, The Angel Max features some of the most finely crafted prose you'll find anywhere, as well as a narrator (Max himself) whose internal conflicts provide a fascinating and singular point of view, a combination the Times review calls "airless", but which I found gave the novel the extra quality that makes it far more than the usual historical novel. This one's also for people looking for great literature.

A great read about a facinating era in America
The Angel Max is a wonderfully written novel about an immigrant from Russia (Lithuania) who arrives in New York in the 1880's. What unfolds in this book is a solidly researched history of immigration, anarchism in America, and the City of New York. The way the story folds factual material into the fictional lives of Max and Fanny Kraft is interesting and fun to read and ponder. There is gentle humor, along with anxiety and sadness in this family, as there is in life for all of us. The book concludes in 1919, an important "threshold" year in American history. This is a great read---go get it today! Peter Glassgold is one terrific writer!

You must have it
Well, this is probably not the most up to date text but it is still one of the best. The book is a collection of topics (Atomic Physics, Solid State Physics, some of QM, some of classical Physics, Statistical Thermodynamics), which are explained in a short, simple and clear way. This is also a great book for those who are familiar with QM: they will find an excellent collection of topics that are just outlined on other standard QM textbooks. Moreover one can learn a lot from the original way M. Born approaches important subjects in Physics (how to recognize the Physics in every concept, for example). This is a book everyone interested in Physics should have in her/his library.

Simple, exact and excelent
When we see how much quantum mechanics pushed our civilization and how bad it became explained on 'modern' textbooks it is a relief to find out that this book is still published and affordable. A must for anyone interested in the subject or needing to understand it with the help of one of the fathers of QM.

Why do we need Quantum Mechanics?
Max Born was one of the fathers of quantum mechanics, a great physicist and a cultivated gentleman. His "Atomic Physics" has been around since a long time, but is still the best place to find out why do we really need to replace Newtonian mechanics. This book studies every kind of phenomena which puzzled the physicsts of the early century, like thermal equilibrium of radiation, photo-electric effect, the Bohr model of the atom, specific-heat irregularities, cohesion forces among molecules, etc. Then he shows how quantum mechanics correctly describes each one of them. This is done in a pedagogically very effective way: the ideas are explained in the text, while the more formal derivations appear in a large set of appendices. These are gems of precision and concision, precious by themselves. My favorite one is the derivation of the Van der Waals forces (between molecules), which he shows to be essentially quantal, as they are due to the zero-point energy of the ! quantum harmonic oscillator. One of the great text-books of this century.

The Bible as Told by Max McLean

A fresh, powerful way to experience the Bible...

This set of CDs comes in an attractive black leather case. It's compact and zips up, and I plan to keep it in my car forever. The chapters are each on different tracks, so it's easy to find a particular Scripture or to go back and review. I found my set used, and it was missing a couple of CDs. I e-mailed the company, and they mailed me the CDs immediately at no cost!

As for the sound and reading quality, I am really amazed. At first, the accent was different and sounded a bit strange, but I quickly fell in love with it. The telling of creation is breathtaking. In the New Testament, you hear the words of Jesus as if you're one of the disciples. I can't really tell you how listening to Jesus' words in traffic is affecting my life. It mixes the eternal with the mundane in a way that changes my perception of life. It also fills my mind with godly thoughts and ideas. I find myself listening to each CD more than once; it's just that good!

Listening to the Word is definitely different than reading it. You hear the Bible read as the early Jews and Christians did in the synogogues. It touches different parts of you, as you get a broad overview of themes instead of a deep analysis of each verse. You will find yourself understanding more about Jesus' ministry. If you think about it, so many of His words were spoken in a short period of time. They affected those listening in a way that we may not know, since we ponder each verse. I highly recommend this purchase. It is expensive, but it is an investment that will last forever. It really is a new encounter with God.

The Bible as Told by Max McLean
It started out for me when a friend gave me a copy of The Book of Revelation on CD, by Max McLean. He doesn't just tell it, he recreates it in your mind. And that can be a huge asset in understanding scripture. The visualization just makes a profound difference. He breezes throught the pronunciations and with great clearity. I can LISTEN to Matthew, Mark and Luke in the same amount of time it would take me to read a few chapters. These recordings are not made to replace a hard copy of the bible, but it makes understanding scripture much easier.

A beautiful accompaniment to your devotional time ...
When I first became a Christian I made a point to listen to Christian music, then I decided I would listen to classical music. While still enjoying both, I discovered by listening to the Bible 1 hour a day (while driving) I could listen to the Bible in a year! Talk about helping your memorization-wow! The delivery by McLean is powerful--you can really envision the word. It's as if he is painting a picture with his voice!

Unbroken, unfaltering, metered life.
I love the way Pink Instrument zooms like the Space Shuttle orbiting New York, very Un-John Glenn-like. It's funny and beautiful. Ralph Gibson's interspersed, nicely reproduced photographs are touchingly elegant.

Good work, lad!
Max Blagg is the relaxed Jack Kerouac. His meditations on the pleasures of the mind and body (and wine) are relentlessly and energetically entertaining.
