A timeless (and timely) story of a child's honesty.
I remember reading, and rereading, this book as a child. Growing up in Kentucky, I can relate to the rural aspects of the book. The story is timeless and timely in the world today. Jesse Stuart will remain forever in my heart and the hearts of grown children everywhere who read his works an example of what goodness can come from writing for children.
A skillful illustration of the true benefits of honesty.
In "A Penny's Worth of Character" Jesse Stuart takes the reader back to a simpler time, when a boy could exchange used paper bags for a candy bar at the store. The message of the book is as old, that of honesty. Stuart skillfully illustrates the inner turmoil of a young boy who has been dishonest and how he makes it right. It's an excellent book for kids from 4th grade up and would make an excellent story to read aloud.
Most memorable book I've read in 50 years; Honesty pays!
A story that I've never forgotten in 50 years of reading. I've searched for a copy of it for 40+ years. Any one, young or old, who readys this simple story will be changed forever...unless they are the most callous individual alive

stunning accomplishment
This author knows her stuff! Reading Stephanie Cowell on London is like being there. A wonderfully evocative tale of life during Shakespeare's time. Not to be missed by those who love period fiction done expertly. A gifted writer.
It brings the era of the English Civil War to vivid life.
Stephanie Cowell's "The Physician of London" is the second novel in a trilogy, and continues the story begun in "Nicholas Cooke." One of its themes is the tremendous conflict between religion and science during the dark era of the English Civil War. Nicholas Cooke is both a priest and a scientist. The life of the day is brilliantly, vividly described, and we relive the terrors and the joys of these insightfully, incisively wrought people, so real that we think they actually lived, and some of them are, of course, historical. The book is exciting, and filled with action as well as philosophy, and engrossing from beginning to end. Stephanie Cowell's writing is magnificent. There are lessons here, in the power struggles of Charles I and Oliver Cromwell, in the search for scientific truth by Nicholas Cooke, in this tale of bigotry and corruption and love, for our own time. You will love this superb novel.--Robert Blumenfeld
I felt so involved I couldn't put the book down.
When I began reading the first chapters of Nicholas Cooke, I wasn't sure I liked his character. He was so hot-tempered and didn't seem to appreciate some people as he should have. As I continued to read on into the Physician of London, and as Nicholas continued to mature into the man he became in The Physician of London, I found myself more and more involved with this man and his life. I realized that his character, his desires and dreams and his conflicts, reminded me of my own desires and dreams and conflicts. Like a good cook, Stephanie Crowell flavors the book wonderfully with the Elizabethan/Stuart atmosphere and writes in such a way as to involved the reader not only in the main character, but all the characters. She has made this reader at least impatient for the publishing of the last book in the trilogy of Nicholas.

Been there, saw that, took a picture to save the moment.....
Marty has been blessed, not only with musical talent, but with a real sense of being a part of history. Thank God Miss Hilda turned him onto photography, as well as music. The moments captured in his book will be there for us to remember people and places long after they are gone. Not just for the good times, but the hard times as well, the "road", the music, the eyes of the pilgrims looking out at you from these pages, make for an absorbing journey across America and thru Marty's life. And he's right about using black & white vs color. Makes you LOOK, not get drawn to some bright color, instead of getting the point of the picture. Give the boy another 25 years and I know we'll get a companion volume to cover the new millenium part of his journey. Although, I hope he doesn't wait THAT long.
This book's a keeper......
Marty's keen eye catches the souls of his famous subjects in a way that the ordinary photographer has missed. This book is a masterpiece (just like his last album) and belongs on every coffee table in America. His photos are unbelievable and his accompanying words prove Marty's talent goes way beyond his music.
Essential material for anyone interested in Country Music.
Marty Stuart's unique perspective and his love and admiration for the people he writes about makes this book feel like you're sitting down with Marty and looking through his photo albums. Wonderful book!

Defintely a good for your teen
My mom bought me this book about 13 years ago. I was just about to push into my early teen years, and I really had no clue what to expect. I read this book, and I although I couldn't relate to everything in it at the time, it was presented in a clear, logical and Godly way. As the years went by, I began to relate more and more to Dr. Dobson's words, and I recalled his suggestions often. Now, I'm buying this for my much younger sister as she begins her trip into her teen years.
Preparing for adolescence
I have two boys who are thirteen and nine years old. I also teach a preadolescent sunday school class for my church. I read the book and began immediately encouraging my oldest son to read it also. As a thirteen year old boy, he had more important things to do than read a book his dad recommended, so I bought the teaching guide and taught it to my sunday school class. We are now exploring other areas, but every time we cross a subject that we studied in the book, the kids remind me where that came from and which of the symptoms the person in question is suufering from. This book has helped a great deal with my children as well as other children in my sunday school class. Parents have even asked me where I gained the courage to teach the book and thank me for doing something that they felt was to touchy a subject for them to take on. thank you Dr. Dobson for having the insight to write this and your other books.
Your pre-teen MUST read this book
This book provides indispensible advice and education for the parent and pre-teen. When I was entering adolescence, my parents gave me this book. I cannot describe what a relief it was to learn that I wasn't weird and that the feelings I was having and the stage I was entering were normal. A must-read for all Christian families on the brink of the teenage years.

Choice quotes
Author, lecturer Stuart Wilde is one of the real characters of the self-help, human potential movement. His style is humorous, controversial, poignant and transformational. Quotes here reflect his philosophy and are taken from unpublished works, excerpts from radio and TV shows done over the years as well as newpaper articles. They are "choice"!

Life Changing
This is one of the best devotinal books I ever read. It helped me to see what God wanted for me in my life. It really turned my life around.
I was so glad I bought it at my youth camp. That's where I met Stuart Hall himself (awesome goddly man to meet). He mentioned this book at the camp for those who wanted to learn more about what he talked about. (I surly did!)
This book covers everthing from the Basics to Moral Boundries, Friends, and Choices.
God really worked on me through this Book and his very own word.
I hope any and all who read this book will be abel to see God more clearly as I did.

A Volunteer Youth Sponsor looks at "The Seven Checkpoints"
I am a volunteer youth sponsor for our small church and youth group. Recently, and coincidentally, our full-time youth pastor and our only other youth resource person resigned. Without full time leadership we sponsors were feeling mighty inadequate. I heard Andy Stanley on a radio talk show doing a promotion for his new book. I bought the book and found it to be not only an easy read but clearly delineated and organized for even those of us in part-time volunteer ministry. Stanley and Hall offer some unorthodox but very sensible approaches to planning and maintaining a youth group over a long period of time with a specific goal in mind. The book is so easy to follow, we have decided to adapt our curriculum to their philosophy of these seven pivotal checkpoints. I recommend this book for any struggling youth volunteers like me and for any of those in full-time ministry.
A wise choice
Kids face so many difficult challenges in today's chaotic culture. Andy Stanley talks practically and from the heart to help teens to live victoriously in the middle of this generation. One especially helpful checkpoint is encouraging teens to make wise choices and showing them how. Rather than telling kids that they're making wrong choices, they can consider making the wisest choice in any situation. This builds them up rather than cutting them down. It nourishes the spirit rather than stifling them.

Stuart just keeps turning out these gems!!
She is a psychic that uses her gifts to aid the police. When she begins getting impressions about a missing socialite that could be connected to the disappearance of another woman, she and her powers come into contact with Col. Sam Oliver. The missing woman is the daughter of a high political office and he is trying to keep the lid on it while searching out a terrorist group connected to the missing women. It is steaming, taut, dark and with the alpha/gamma rogue that Stuart is famous for creating.
This so though several years old, it not dated in anyway. An absolute must for Stuart fans.
Stuart just keeps turning out these gems!!
This is another wonderful tale from Stuart who gives you big book quality even in series romance. He is naturally dark and brooding, the O'Neil, living with his housekeeper and son on the edge of the Maine coast, hiding from deep dark secrets and torments that he could not save him family from drowning. Cursed to live alone.
She runs off the road in the middle of a hurricane to avoid hitting a ghostly little girl and it plunges her car into the deep waters of the sound. Just as she thought she was dying she is saved by O'neil.
Taking the old worst opening line to start a book and making it a title, Stuart gives you one great supernatural tale and another of her dark tormented heroes.
I love this book!
Ordinarily I'm not particularly fond of books about psychics but this book is unbelievably suspenseful, tense and romantic. It's hard to believe that it was released as a category romance because it could easily have been marketed as a suspense novel. Elizabeth Hardy has psychic powers that she uses to assist the police. It is when she receives images relating to the disappearance of a high profile socialite that her life becomes endangered. Enter Colonel Sam Oliver - grim, cynical and infinitely sexy. Kudos to Anne Stuart who manages to make you tense and wonder whether things will work out even though deep down you konw it's a harlequin and the good guys must surely triumph ....

Great book
Clear concise and to the point. A good number of examples and graphs. Nice historical acknowledgments. The book flows.
a great introduction to investing concepts
I have to point out that I have the first edition of this book (which did not have Veale's name on it). It is absolutely excellent at introducing the basic concepts behind all types of securities and futures investing one may be considering. They cover what stocks, bonds, etc. are, how they are traded, the terminology used by brokers, and even some historical background. I was really impressed at how clear and understandable all the explanations were. This book was written by someone who really understands the concepts and knows how to explain them well.
The book does not have a glossary in it, but does have an excellent index, which is really better in many ways.
Simply wonderful!
Great book. Complex concepts are explained clearly and concisely. Examples are abundant and helpful.
