Best book on the subject
I've read all the books that I could on old frames and this one is the best. The photography, the information, the orderly fashion in which it is laid out, etc. It was so helpful that the other frame books now sit on the shelf, barely referred to again.

This is great for beginner collectors like myself.
The book is comprehensive enough so as not to overwhelm the learner, but provides enough detail (of the history of frames and their construction, for example) to inspire and to help direct further investigation. The photographs are wonderfully clear and representative, and their texts informative. I was also quite pleased to find that two frames out of my own small collection were featured!

Great photos of great frames of all styles and from 1800 up
This book offers everything that other books fail to deliver. The color photos let you see the detail. They show different art styles such as tramp art, Eastlake styles, Victorian, Art Deco, Art Nouveau, etc and the book is the 1st to cover table top frames. A price guide is included to help you value what you have or what you seek.

Excellent study bible for men!
Have reviewed this bible for use in a men's bible study. Excellent tracks that are meaningful for guys in the front, with expansions throughout (a chain reference approach) so you can drill down as deep as need to.

Because it is a NLT (new living translation), somewhat obscure meanings are clearly translated into meaningful every day modern English, which guys can quickly grasp without any extra work.

If you want to study the bible, and if you're a guy, you really should consider this bible. It's laid out for simple usage, but with profound results for men.

An important part of my day
Briscoe's daily studies are organized in topical tracks, each of which are connected to a chapter of the Bible. I spent my youth in the pew's of Briscoe's church (Elmbrook, outside of MKE) before moving to the east coast. These daily studies are like a beautiful voice from my past, urging me (with all Briscoe's humor and intelligence) to strive to be the man God wants me to be. If you enjoy Chambers or Tozer, this will be of great use to you.

Daily Study Bible for Men
Very easy to understand. I would like to find a similar version for women as gift.

The Sirens
"Odysseus, bravest of heroes,
Draw near to us, on our green island,
Odysseus, we'll teach you wisdom,
We'll give you love, sweeter than honey.
The songs we sing, soothe away sorrow,
And in our arms, you will be happy.
Odysseus, bravest of heroes,
The songs we sing, will bring you peace."

I've always been intrigued by the painting of Odysseus and the Sirens by Herbert James Draper. Three mermaid like creatures are singing and clinging to the ship as Odysseus is tied to the mast so he can't be lured to his doom. The crew's ears are all filled with beeswax so they can't hear the sires' seductive chant. Odysseus was the first man to ever hear the sirens' song and live. When cheated of their prey, the sirens drowned themselves in anger and frustration.

According to legend, the sires had originally been the companions of Persephone before she was abducted by Hades. Because they failed to save her, the goddess changed them into grotesque creatures as punishment. The sirens' song tells, falsely of the pleasures of the underworld. They also claimed the power of prophecy.

This story was composed by the Greek poet Homer during the second half of the 8th century BC and preserved by word of mouth for centuries before being written down. According to legend, he was born on the island of Chios around 800 BC and was blind.

The Odyssey is about the hero Odysseus who is doomed by the gods to wander for years from his home. This edition presents the story with photography and narrative illustration. It also explores the historical and geographical background to this timeless epic. There are sections on The Trojan War, Gods and Goddesses and Maps of Odysseus' Journey.

Adrian Mitchell retells this seafaring adventure filled with storms, monsters, magic spells, curses and exotic lands. It appeals to the wandering adventurous spirit in us all.

A classic journey...
Remember your absolute favorite English teacher- the one who made English Lit, or poetry, or whatever come alive, so that you understood it, enjoyed it, wanted more of it? The one who knew endless interesting things about the writer, the world they lived in, and so on? Well, DK classics are like having a master class with that teacher. Instead of hitting The Odyssey for the first time in high school english, imagine already knowing the main characters, the main story lines and quite a bit about what was going on in the writer's world.

Obviously, if you are reading a review of it you are considering buying it. And, from the heading & the stars you know that I think it's a good one. My 2nd grader loves it. My 15 year old nephew read & enjoyed it during the holidays, in preparation for starting The Odyssey at school. My husband, who never did the Odyssey in school, really enjoyed it- and liked knowing what all the fuss is about finally! It is abridged of course, and a purist will have things to pick at, but then, a real purist would read it in Greek anyway... For the rest of us, this is a great introduction to a one of the foundations of our literary heritage.

Wonderful Introduction for Children to this Classic
My daughter and I have been reading (and re-reading!) the DK Classics (of which "The Odyssey" is part of) for several years, since she was 5. These books are very colorful, with lots of illustrations and photos of genuine artifacts, maps, and people from the era in which the story is set. Side panel text gives background information about the author, pictures and story. These "additions" (which do not detract from, but only enhance the story) help the young reader (and the adult too!) put the story into context. It is like getting both a classic and a pictorial history book rolled into one! The text is easy to read. My daughter is now 9, and reading the books on her own. Not only has she developed an appreciation for classic literature, but for history as well. These are great books for parents to read with their children. I highly recommend them!

The Dog Who Bit a Policeman

Kaminsky Stays in Top Form
In his 13th Inspector Porfiry Rostnikov adventure, author Stuart Kaminsky once again takes us inside the "new" Russia with a realism that is at times stark, amusing, tragic, and even romantic. Kaminsky has the unique ability to write of modern day Russia with a "feel" that is at once real and compelling. The Curtain has fallen on the political system of the Soviet Union and out of the depths of the ashes rises not the Phoenix but a complex, confusing, and dangerous atmosphere that indeed is alarming to its citizens, who, naturally, long for breaths of freedom. Who will rule out of this rubble is the mystery! The collapse of communism merely has opened up another evil--organized crime. However, enter Inspector Rostnikov and his team of crime fighters of the Moscow police.. Throughout the series, readers have come to respect the wily, one-legged Inspector (known as "The Washtub," due to his weightlifting in his freetime), who is a realist at heart, yet both a sentimentalist and a romanticist. In "The Dog Who Bit A Policeman," Rostnikov's squad faces the destructive forces of two Mafia gangs, hell- bent to kill each other and to control the country, one precinct at a time. Kaminsky's books always carry parallel campaigns and Sasha Tkach and Elena Timofeyeva are assigned to hound out the perpetrators of illegal dog fighting, a fast rising and highly profitable "business." Elena's romantic interests with Rostnikov's policeman son continue to expand while the "Vampire" Emile Karpo's task follows more the political line of crime fighting. He and the Inspector try to solve a series of gang-related murders but which also involve high level political figures. Kaminsky has the ability to invoke the power of description and episode of modern Moscow and of the feelings of the general Muscovite. One doesn't have to know first-hand Mother Russia to appreciate this series as the author's ability to bring out the landscape and atmosphere is outstanding and noteworthy. For a great mystery read, this series, and especially this book, is superb. Dos vidanya!

Rostinikov, the philosophical detective. Thumb's up!
Stuart Kaminsky's characters are so real that I welcome their return as I wowuld an old and dear friend. Life never seems to get easier in post-communist Russia, and crime still runs rampant, but our team of detectives (the only ones in the police department seemingly incorruptible) plod slowly along until the crimes are solved. Each character has his or her style, but my favorite, is Inspector Porfity Rostnikov -- philospher, master detective, sometime psychologist, lover of fine music, weight lifter, husband, father and friend. Intrigued with American mystery books (Ed McBain is his favorite writer), he has the uncanny ability to tap into criminal minds to solve the crimes. This is a definite read for lovers of intelligent mystery books with interesting quirky characters.

Explemplary Husband review
This indepth Bible study complements the Excellent wife study beautifully...

The best book I have ever read.
I just finished reading "The Exemplary Husband". I cannot thank Dr. Stuart Scott enough for this book. It is so thorough. I will read it again and again. The book has so much in it that it should be read slowly to really absorb and capture the Biblical perspective for the husband. Dr. Scott's extensive use of Bible exerpts is the core of why this book works! Finally, I am beginning to understand the the true role of the husband. My wife and I are Catholic and I used to have pretty much an "I'm the boss" attitude or "you should listen to me because I am the husband". I must admit that at first, parts of the book were a little hard to swallow - especially with respect to intimacy and lust. But after careful prayer and reflection I have come to understand how selfishness can really destroy a relationship and even one's feelings of self worth. "The Exemplary Husband" has been so helpful for improving my relationship with Christ, God, and my wife. This book should be mandatory reading for all husbands. This contemporary book is one of the most valuable tools any man could have to help insure marital harmony. Thank you Dr. Scott!

Real Help for Husbands
I can honestly say that this is one of the best books I have ever read in regard to godly living. The unique aspect of this volume is its practical 'how to' approach to daily life. I especially appreciated the exercises in the appendix section. These exercises [and others scattered throughout the book] provide the sincere disciple with actual acts of righteousness that can be practiced. The various charts also provide an organized plan to keep track of progress. Help is to be found in every area of imaginable difficulty from financial management to selfless sexual intimacy with your spouse. The theological explanation of the role of the husband is done at the outset of the book with great care and simplicity. The reader is challenged as to his view of God and his willingness to live his life in submission to the Word of God. That priority of worship is consistently brought under pressure as the husband faces opportunities to lay down his life daily on behalf of his wife. According to Dr. Scott, 'The Exemplary Husband' "has no trouble in asking forgiveness because they want to be peacemakers" [p.190]. This book not only teaches the husband how to recognize sin and shortcoming in his life, it also teaches him how to deal with it biblically. As a pastor engaged in regular counseling, I have found that most Christian men have real difficulty as they attempt to discipline their time within the priority system that God has set forth in His Word. This book can play a vital part in bringing some accountability into that area. True believers want to live a repentant and godly life, however, in many cases they don't know how to begin and maintain the process. In the 'Exemplary Husband', the seeking heart will find concrete answers from the Bible explained in a very useful way. I was personally convicted and encouraged to grow in my relationship with God and with my wife as I read this volume.

Grimbold's Other World
Published in Paperback by Faber & Faber (1990)

Fabulous Nicholas Gray
I've been a big fan of Nicholas Gray ever since I first borrowed 'Overhills to Fabulon'. I think that Grimbold's Other World was one of the most magical books I've read, and this is including Nicholas Gray's other books. I totally agree that this author should be reprinted and considering the popularity of the Harry Potter series, I can't understand why any publishing company doesn't undertake this sensible option.

Grimbold is Great
My Dad has told to sit down and prattle on about Grimbold and Muffler in the hope that the publishers will put Nicholas Stuart Gray books back into print again.

Dad read us Grimbold's Other World, and this is what I think of it:

Muffler, brought up by farmers, meets Grimbold the cat, who takes the boy into the Night World, where cats grow enormous and dogs quiver like mice, and where Sable, the merciless sorcerer, lives in Red Tower, with his mischeivous son, Gareth. Gareth always defys his father, and gets into rather serious trouble, but Muffler and Grimbold help him.

Muffler also meets the Hob,who lives in the barn and is the luck of the farm, and Madam Nettleweb, Sable's scatty sister.

This is a fabulous book, full of magic and mystery. I recommend it for any age from 7 and upwards.

A great collection of short, inter-related fantasy stories.
One of my favourite books ever, this humorous and quirky collection of short stories about one boy and his relationship with the world of faery is written with intelligence and wit. Grimbold is a large black cat who guides Muffler, the foundling child raised by farmers, on many midnight adventures through the "night world", where everything becomes, physically, what it is spiritually, or mentally. Cats are huge, fearsome and fast, and dogs are small, cringing things full of fear. (Great for cat people: I felt very vindicated.) I highly recommend it for bedtime reading, as it is harmless and not frightening at all, and each chapter can be read on its own. Grimbold is full of dry, sarcastic humor, and Muffler is an endearing character for children and parents alike.

Nicholas Stuart Gray is a very talented, underappreciated artist who wrote other children's fantasy fiction. Notably, he wrote a story called "Seventh Swan", about the last of the ! "swan prince" brothers from the fairy tale. The premise of the novel is, what happened to the poor prince who was left with one swan's wing at the end of the story?

Austen's brief History of time (and slightly rewritten)
Jane Austen wrote these short snippets on a number of the rulers of England in chronological order - using, as she says, 'very few dates'. The result is a wonderful collection of highly prejudicial outlines of various Kings and Queens - and after all the purpose of history to be scandalous and slanderous can be undermined by sticking too closely to extraneous detail such as dates and so on. The whole thing would probably take you much less than hour to read. Austen proves her talent for sharp observation and wit from an early age for this little book was written while she was still a teenager in the early 1790's. Its a lovely introduction to her writing for those who haven't had much to do with Austen before but are keen to try her out.

She may be "Ignorant," but she's also brilliant
This book may not be used in any history class, but it is one of the most charming works she ever wrote. I had this smile painted on my face the entire 15 minutes it took to read it. Very, very witty.

One of the most amusing pieces in English Literature
Jane Austen may be best known for her biting and sarcastic wit, her compassion for her characters, and her understanding of the truth of their lives and situations. But this short piece of juvenilia combines all of her mature insight with the confidence, humour, and unmitigated self-satisfaction of a younger and more whimsical Austen. Definitely not to be overlooked in favour of her more serious work, this book will take merely minutes to read but leave you with astoundingly funny comments to treasure and smile over for years to come. It is Jane Austen at her very best: uninhibited, cruel, funny and ultimately self-deprecating. She knows what she is doing and does it with consumate skill. A must read for any Austen fan or anyone with a sense of humour.

Another 10 from Stuart!!!!!!!!
Another Keeper from Stuart. Anne Stuart is one of my favourite authors, and she does bad boys we love better than anyone in the business. I love Moonrise, To Love a Dark Lord, Prince of Swords, Nightfall and Ritual Sins, but many of her old series works are just the same power - the ability to reach in and grab your heart. You don't read Stuart, you live it. Often you cry, she is that powerful of a writer.

And once again she demonstrates it with this short book of of the Here Comes the Groom for Harlequin. WOW what a story.

Katherine Lafferty was 20 years old a good girl when she met Danny McCandles, the boy from the wrong site of the tracks. Did not matter to her, she loved him and knew she would spend her live loving him. What she did not know she would spend 10 years loving him and believing her was dead. On the day they were to elope to get married Danny is shot six times and pronounced dead shattering her how life. After a spell she went on living, but her world was greys, she cared little about her appearance, she drifted into an engagement she did not want, and her ulcer was driving her nuts. She goes to get wedding invitation to a wedding she resists, but is so apathetic toward the world that she allows herself to be pushed into it, and come straight face to face with Mac - at first she faints at his feet for Mac is the spitting images of Danny, but then she sees the crescent scar on his lips - the same scar Danny had and knows it is him. But he does not even remember, thinks her rather dowdy looking and a general pain to his world. She has spent her last ten years in love with this man and he does not even recall her!! She suddenly stops the mouning and goes after him with a vengeance, crashing her fiat into his beloved MGB - not once, but twice....
Ah, life is suddenly good again........

You will love these wonderful characters and won't be able to put the one down or ever forget it.

thank you, Anne Stuart!!!

A very different romance!
Katherine, while a college girl, falls in love with Danny. Danny, however, seems to be part of the criminal element in the small town, where they live. Katherine sees Danny killed, or so she believes. Ten years later, Mac walks into her life. She believes he's Danny. And, she owes Danny a bit of revenge. Off kilter, is the way you'll feel, when you read this book. A touch of humor, a touch of mystery, and the right touch of romance, make this book one of Ms. Stuart's best Harlequin Americans. All category books, should have this much going for them!

Another Anne Stuart winner
This is classic Anne Stuart - wicked, passionate but above all, hilariously funny. This is Anne Stuart before her dark and dismal days writing with sparkling wit and mischievous evil. The heroine and the hero are both flawed but lovable, the situation is unbelievable yet somehow convincing and I can't recommend this book enough.
