Incredibly Helpful
When I was diagosed with several allergies my doctor suggested this book. Doctors are often not the best communicators which is why I am glad I had this book as an easy to understand, yet very informative guide. If anyone in your family suffers from allergies I would stronly suggest this book.

Stop sneezing and start living!
I have been diagnosed with a severe allergy problem. After purchasing several books from Amazon and having purused several more at the book store, I can honestly say that this one book is the best written, most complete and scientifically accurate book I have seen for lay people on the subject. It covers everything from how to modify your home environment, to what drugs are available, to what are desensatization shots and what are the results if you take them. It has enabled me to discuss things more intelligently with my doctor. Also I want to warn you there is lot of pseudo-science out there. This book sets things straight about what is the science in allergy diagnosis and treatment and what is just plain nonsense. Read this book before you read anything else. It is quite concise and I found you can jump around and the read the chapters of your choice without being lost.

clarifies the mystery of allergies, easy to understand
This is "THE" book my doctor recommended to me. It is written in a most thorough, but extremely easy to understand manner. Its confidence helps allay the fears that come from the mystery of allergies. Interesting, informative and very helpful! -e.s.

The Armament Tide: Rearming America

Amazon base price: $30.00

A Realist and a Patriot and the U.S. defense business
Admiral Platt has managed a miracle. As a leader in transforming old practices to business practices in the Pentagon 20 years ago, his additional 8 years as a defense executive leaves him with a near-singular ability to light the way for how the Pentagon might yet succeed in transforming America's military hardware agenda. Not many college sophomores will reach for this compact, brief manifesto and memoir, but it would provide any one a sharply focused treatment of issues that are often avoided. I can say that no one in the Pentagon should be without it.

It's readable, doesn't bog down into the inevitable minutiae that characterizes most volumes about the defense business and it offers a serious warning -- that the U.S. defense business in general has become less competitive. That course can and should be changed. Bravo!

Applied Wisdom for National Defense Strategy
Admiral Platt speaks with the voice of experience and commands attention for his ideas. We do need to rethink our national procurement and defense strategy.
I highly recommend this book for any person seeking a better understanding of military thinking and procurement, as well as the problems we as taxpayers all face.
This book is a must read for Defense Department personnel and anyone seeking a balanced perspective and alternative to newspaper and media hype about defense procurement and strategy. This truly is applied wisdom by a serious thinker that will hopefully be taken to heart by our leaders in the DOD.

Compulsory Reading
In these perilous times we are infused with patriotism and a firm
resolve to keep our country free and to send the word out that
we are strong in military might and determination. Unfortunately,
much of this is mere rhetoric. The present author, a retired
Rear Admiral in the United States Navy, brings to the forefront
his extensive experience and great concern for the future of our
country by detailing our past history in the area of military
procurement--its shortcomings as well as its positive aspects--
and a blueprint for the future. Although I feel well- informed about current events in the world, it was a startling revelation
for me to discover that I was totally unaware of the true nature
of military preparedness. We may have the determination to keep
our nation secure, but of necessity this must be backed by the means to do so. WE must have these means--military supplies and
weapons--precisely when needed. This implies that they must be
procured well in advance as speedily and efficiently as possible. Lengthy deliberations in the industrial sector and the
halls of government may seriously impair our effectiveness in our defense. Facts and figures are provided in this book to
strengthen the argument that we must act now so that we are not
caught defenseless. The author was in the center of the area of
procurement and had vital associations with some of the well-known personages involved, including the President of the United
States. The book is replete with anecdotes and personal comments
but never loses sight of its main theme and goal--to apprise
America of the absolute necessity to be always mightily prepared
and that speedy procurement is the sine qua non of this objective! I strongly recommend that this book be read by not
only our representatives in government but the general public
who should be informed.

Atlas of Oregon - Excellent
Loy & Allan build upon previous atlas efforts (OR 1976, CA 1979) and make use of technology and greater knowledge to produce excellent, useful maps and charts. Pre-1865 (inch-pound) measuring units are used instead of U.S. (SI) units as used in the 1976 edition (for example, temperatures are in °F not °C). Historic growth and immigration maps, education (K-12, university and school districts), demographics and future temperature and precipitation scenarios make this a handy "big picture" reference.

Economic, water and transportation and other "sheds" enable a you to obtain a good understanding of past, current and future trends. Obtain the Atlas and CD - you will use them both for a long time.

A must buy for every Oregonian
This book is a bargain. The wealth of information collected in one place is amazing. I consider this book the ultimate collection of interesting data on the state of Oregon. Those with children in Oregon should consider this a "must buy" for their children's education.

The Best book on Oregon Ever!...
This is the best book about Oregon EVER!...It has all you need to know about the Indians, population and it evan has maps from the Lewis and Clark expedition! If you EVER need info on Oregon this is the Book to get!...

Wish that they did all 50 states
When visiting in California, a friend of mine showed me this Atlas. Wow, was I impressed. I was hoping that I could get my own copy for New Jersey, but unfortunately the series only covers the western states so far. The quality of these maps is beyond compare. I strongly recommend this atlas.

Outstandingly useful!
I ride motorcycles in the southwest and have done so for years. The Benchmark titles are the best there is! I have used them with confidence and recommend them to others who ride. "Nuff said.

A tremendous atlas
This series of atlases is fantastic. The relief shading adds a tremendous amount of information and without cluttering or distracting from the road detail. Absolutely great for camping in remote areas, for example. With a GPS you can practically pinpoint your location on every page.

Printing and binding are excellent. My old edition went through hell and came out battered but alive.

The Big Silence

Lieberman, a character that lives beyond the page!
I love every single book in the Lieberman series but this one is a particular favorite. As always, Lieberman is both worldly wise and all too human, with weaknesses that make him just that more believable and strangely lovable as well.
This time around, Lieberman and his associate, Hanrahan, are trying to guard the ex-wife and son of a mob informant while juggling the daily frustrations of their own lives. While the mystery will keep your attention, what is equally wonderful, to my mind, are Lieberman and Hanrahan, two guys who jump from the pages in vivid detail. Kaminsky is a wonderful writer and I hope more than mystery buffs discover him. He deserves the attention!

A brilliant novel
Dark, yet humorous. The entire Lieberman series is fantastic (I've read them all) but this one is the best. The plots are complex yet they move at breakneck speed. You really get involved in the characters and their lives. This cop series focuses on the minds and lives of the police, rather than focusing on the criminals. This series is tops. The only other writers that come close are Michael Connelly, Dennis Lehane and S.J. Rozan.

Good police procedural
Chicago police officers Abe Lieberman and Bill Hanrahan are partners affectionately dubbed by their peers as the "Rabbi and the Priest". Their latest case involves mob accountant Mickey Gornitz willing to testify against his boss if certain conditions are met. Mickey insists he will only talk with Abe, who was a high school classmate several decades ago. Mickey also demands that his ex-wife and teenage son receive full protection though he has not seem either of them in fifteen years until the informer disappears into the witness protection program. Reluctantly, the Cook County District Attorney's Office agrees.

However, almost immediately after the moment that the Boston cop handed over the former wife and son to Bill, thugs kidnap the duo. When the abduction includes murder, Bill blames himself and not the brass who thought the wife and kid were low priority. As Abe works on a couple of cases and some personal shtick, he tries to help his partner deal with a severe case of depression caused by deep feelings of guilt.

The Abe Lieberman police procedural series is constantly one of the best the sub-genre has to offer. The current tale, THE BIG SILENCE, is an intriguing look at Chicago, various ethnic groups, and relationships. The police investigation is engaging because no great revelation occurs, just hard work. Stuart M. Kaminsky other sleuths (see Rostnikov and Peters) are very good and deserve fan accolades, but clearly neither one holds a candle to the Lieberman books.

I highly recommend Bit by the Fleas
Anyone who cares about French antiques knows that there are many good deals to be unearthed at the marche aux Puces, but the place was always somewhat intimidating to me because it's known to be an "insider's" market. It's hard to know where to go and who to trust. I was delighted to come across this book because it demystifies the process very effectively and is written in a no-nonsense, discerning and user-friendly manner. It is not designed as a comprehensive guide to the Puces but rather as a "short list" of the stands that the authors have found to be most worthwhile (be it in terms of selection, quality, price and/or reliability). It's a bit like having a Zagat's guide to the Puces. I also liked the format, which is compact and practical to carry around Paris, as well as the design and graphics, which are tasteful and up-scale. As a result, I've also found it to be a very appropriate gift for friends who share my interest in French antiques.

THE book on THE Paris flea market
I've been to the Marchee aux Puces many times in Paris and wish I'd had this book with me before! The photos are gorgeous and helped identify different parts of the huge market and types of furniture. I've enjoyed reading through it over and over since my return. It's so interesting and there's so much to learn. Not just what to buy and where, but how to ship it home and how to recognize value or ... non-value. This book is a real treasure for those serious about antiques or just browsing the market for interesting finds.

best info on the market
Stuart Hough saved me thousands of hours of research with his incredibly efficient reviews. I was able to save a ton of time at le marche des Puces by carrying this handy pocketguide with me while touring - and saved some money by knowing who to talk to and how to approach them. It is written with both style and efficiency - if you are into antiques, this is a MUST READ.

The Best Architectural Guide To New York City
Simply the best book available for those seriously interested in a detailed architectural history of New York, even though the most recent edition was published in 1991. Unbelievably rich in detail. As other reviewers point out however, this is NOT a typical "tourist" guide about where to eat, sleep or have fun in New York.

Even for New Yorkers, a treasure trove of history
New York is a fascinating place today, and even more so after learning about its history and architecture from this well-written and researched guide book. Did you know that the land under the Empire State Building was originally owned by the Astor family? Or that the NY Public Library and Bryant Park reside on what was the Croton reservoir? Such tidbits abound.

Best portable encyclopedia of New York!
Until Kenneth Jackson's _Encyclopedia of New York City_ this was the closest thing to an encyclopedia of New York City in existence. Don't buy this book for restaurant reviews or the best hotels; the other guides are for those things. There is a (small and) half-hearted set of restaurant and hotel listings in the front of the tome, but the rest is the real meat of the book: Fantastically detailed walking tours of every part of the city. Manhattan is throughly covered, of course, but the other boroughs don't get overlooked as so many other books do. Buckets of historical data, curious facts, interesting nuggets of info fill every page. Hopefully a newer edition will come out soon, but until it does this book is the best!

What a play!
The cover of Caligula shows an abstract horse bucking, and that is just what Caligula does to us. It knocks us off our high-horse by bringing us face-to-face with death. Only (and I do not choose that word lightly) a true understanding of death can put lives in perspective. Sure Caligula is a despot who could have the life of any of his subjects, but the fact-of-the-matter is that our lives can end at any second. Caligula teaches us not to take life for granted, which is something that is all to easily done in this era. This theme also exists in State of Seige. The other two plays, The Misunderstanding, and The Just Assasins are more subtle, but they also deal with idea that we take petty concerns and ideas too seriously, and fail to look and the big picture. I should also add that the language and passion of the plays are exceptional.

Great stage work from a master
Encompassing the doctorine of the Ubermensch cast alongside the dictatorship of Hitler, Camus creates an absurd, absolute ruler whom the people are at his beck and call. Every whim, be it for food or a specific person's death for the merge specticle of it, are just some of the scenes depicted in this play. It forces the question of whether one would rather possess a ruler who is consistant in all actions, thought, etc. or one who is willing to contradict him or herself for the good of the people. This is a complex work whose depths it seems may never be compeletly explored. Often overlooked due to the potency of his prose, Camus has produced yet another masterwork.

To tell the reader what he WILL find in this book!
Camus' raw talent. There isn't anything negative to say about Camus, other than he died too young. If he'd lived through the 60's, he'd at the most give Sartre a good run for his money.

I love Camus simply because he's the only writer/philosopher who 'beats you up' with the truth, and comforts you with the notion, that he too has done this to himself. He doesn't try to replace your religion or your belief, or even question your place in the world. And he certainly didn't trade in one 'ism' for another like his Toad-faced contemporary!

Read this! It's wonderful. Camus sums up life's absurdities simplier than Kierkergaard and a tad bit kinder--maybe even sublte--than Nietzsche (who in my estimation is the one and only TRUE existential----maybe Che Guevara is a close second)

Captains of Consciousness: Advertising and the Social Roots of the Consumer Culture
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill (1977)
Author: Stuart Ewen
Amazon base price: $6.95
Used price: $0.72
Collectible price: $5.00
Average review score:

Consumer society revealed
This book is a penetrating analysis of the origins of our mass-culture, consumerist society. First, the author debunks the notion that consumerism was a natural technological development or clearly represents progress.

The author makes evident that the captions of industry sought to exert control over the entire social milieu beginning in the 1920s. Their foremost project was to define American life as consumerism. Consumption was marketed as far more than acquiring the essentials of life; it was a means to transform one's life: to achieve social esteem, to escape otherwise mediocre, humdrum lives. It was very much an individualistic approach to life in contrast to the traditional focus on small communities or extended families.

Industrialism was not easily swallowed by workers of the 19th and early 20th century. Traditional social bonds became irrelevant in factory production. Also under scientific management work was systematically deskilled and redefined by management. The strike wave of 1919 and the "Red Scare" of the early 20's convinced economic elites to set upon a course of pacification of discontented citizens in addition to measures of suppression.

The advertising in the 20's tried to convince that the mass production of consumable items was of tremendous benefit to society. The "freedom" of workers as consumers to transform their lives more than offset the actual loss of control over work processes. Every effort was made to see that mass-culture goods penetrated and hence defined all areas of life. Non-acceptance of that corporate-defined world was not viewed kindly. Virtually all non-market activity was cast as secondary, if not illegitimate. Buying superceded voting as the means to social remedy. Even families became purchasing units.

By the 1950s the transformation of the US to a consumerist culture was virtually complete. The penetration of corporate-owned television into all households ensured that alternatives to consumerism would not surface which was a continuation of the trend of centralization of all media outlets. The free-market and free trade ideologues of the 1990s are merely following in those same footsteps.

Though written 25 years ago, this book remains relevant today. More recent authors such as Kuttner, Schiller, Lindblom, or Frank can only add to what Ewen has already said.

The Best Book on Advertising and Commercial Culture
When this book appeared twenty-five years ago, it blew my mind. Filled with amazing insights and information, it's still the best book on the topic. Provocative, thought-provoking, gutsy. Great that this new edition has appeared. It's still the book to read on the subject of advertising.

A pioneer history of American advertising
Captains of Consciousness, written more than twenty years ago, remains a classic in the field. A fascinating look at the rise of American consumer culture, the book places advertising firmly within the context of pivotal social developments that have shaped the life and mind of twentieth century America. A must read for anyone interested in understanding where we come from, where we are going

Finally, a Biblical view of Church Planting
This book is insightful, thought provoking, and practical. This isn't a "how to" book, so anyone looking for a step-by-step book should look elsewhere. However, Murray offers something much more--an approach to church-planting that is both practical AND based in solid ecclesiology. Ecclesiology is lacking in my faith tradition (evangelicalism). This book helps to fill the void. Anyone considering being a part of a church plant MUST get this book.

Outstanding!
Murray and Kraybill have produced a comprehensive book that examines Church Planting from a very balanced perspective. Their treatment of the objections to church planting is extremely valuable. Although their efforts to stay balanced cause the book to occasionally "bog down," the net effect is a classic work that will stand the test of time. This book will be a helpful guide for the leaders and participants in any church planting movement.

Necessary Read!
This is by far the best of the best. It challenges pragmatic approaches by most popular models/methods of church planting and calls for planters to understand their greater purpose as the missio Dei (mission of God). It is a trenchant critique of the idols of "purpose," "programs," and "personalities" over and above kingdom principles and perspectives.

Thoroughly biblical, yet liberating!
