Mandatory Reading
As an "international development studies" major, I have leared a lot about the issue at my university but have consistently felt that something was missing or maybe wrong. After field experience in rural Bolivia and increasing doubts about the development paradigm, my advisor pointed me to this book (along with Wolfgang Sachs's "Development Dictionary"). At that moment reading these two books, which share much in common, felt like an intellectual revelation. The insights of great authors such as Escobar, Rahnema, Illich, and Shiva felt like a fresh breeze compared to my past studies. The deep insights of the writers have spurred only more questions which have occupied my time and imagination since. Given the stale manner in which development is taught and discussed in the academia and the media, I feel that this book is mandatory for any development student or practitioner regarless of experience or age. It is bound to make you think.

Must have
This book is a must have for anyone critical of the development discourse. Heavy texts from around forty different progressive scholars are accompanied by boxes with excerpts from even more, such radical thinkers and activists. Refreshing and almost invaluable!

Will prove a real time saver when serving up dishes
The Pressure Cooker Gourmet showcases 225 superbly presented recipes and instructions by Victoria Wise for today's safe and easy-to-use pressure cookers that will please any palate and satisfy any appetite. From Cream of Tomato Soup; Black Pepper Pot Steak with Shallots and Spicy Red Wine Gravy; American All-Beef Meat Loaf; and Duck with Green Olives, Turnips, and Turnip Greens; to Baby Artichokes and Two Sauces; Zucchini Stuffed with Spinach, Cream Cheese, and Pine Nuts; Omi's Chickpeas with Lime and Onion Ring Topping; and Chevre Rosemary Popover Pudding, The Pressure Cooker Gourmet will prove a real time saver when serving up dishes that would grace any family meal or special celebratory dining event!

Old World Flavor in a Fraction of the Time!!!
The pressure cooker is making a comeback after years of disfavor. The old jiggle top units that could be opened and could cause severe burns are pretty much a thing of the past. Coincidentally, as people have less time to spend in the kitchen, the pressure cooker has come back to center stage. For people still a little leery of using one, this book will allay your fears. Victoria Wise discusses thoroughly the hows, the do's and dont's and generally instructs the reader in the proper and successful use of this versatile appliance.

The Pressure Cooker Gourmet includes recipes for soups, meat, poultry, fish, grains, vegetables, legumes, sauces and of course desserts. Although there are photographs of the finished recipes, the reader will delight in the many tips, subtitutions and suggestions that accompany many of the recipes. You will also appreciate the index of recipes with page numbers, that appear at the beginning of each chapter.

Being a poultry fan, I loved the Coq au Vin. The wine sauce was thicker than I ever remember from another method and the blend of herbs and spices was intensified by the increased pressure.

And if you can't resist a moist and rich cheesecake, try the Cheesecake with Mascarpone Cheese in Chocolate Cookie Crust. I had never tried Mascarpone (a very creamy cream cheese) and it, combined with the moist heat of a pressure cooker, was sinfully delicious.

I'm still experimenting with the recipes and there are a lot of them! It takes some 'old time' recipes and applies 21st century flavors and technology to help rekindle our culinary past. As you might imagine, I love this book and you will too! Buy it!!

fabulous!
this is a fantastic novel. all the characters--from elizabeth to robert dudley to lettice knollys--seems so real. plaidy has a magic touch.

Most complete & balanced novel of Eliz.I I've read.
Written in the first person, the novel makes us feel as though we know what Elizabeth Tudor felt & thought. Her historical fame is not glorified; her substantial faults are not understated; but we see possible reasons for both. Above all, we are shown how her incredible scholarship and insecure youth combined, enabling her (and in a man's world) to bring England from bankruptcy & religious strife to its first age great enough to be named for one person: "Elizabethan."

A Fabulous Book!!!!
This is a wonderful book which is compiled of letters and journal entries written by Queen Victoria. I have read other books about Queen Victoria and find her life to be very interesting. I thought that this book might be difficult to follow because of the format. Christopher Hibbert does a wonderful job with this book making it very easy to follow because of the bits of information he puts into it as the book goes on. The introduction is also very informative. I have trouble putting the book down and highly recommend it!!!!!

If you want to know Queen Victoria, read this book!
"If you could have dinner with any figure in history, who would it be?" My answer to this question would definately be Queen Victoria. This is especially true after having read this book. Even though Princess Beatrice "edited" Her Majesty's journal, it is still worth the read. These letters and excerpts from the Queen's journal are full of interesting facts, tender moments, and, of course, fiery quotes. I didn't want to put this book down! Even though I now have finished it, I still like to pick up the book and read little sections. I highly recommend this book for those who really want to get to know the real Queen Victoria. My only wish is that the editor had left the Queen's numerous underlines in tact. He says it was too expensive for the printing (which I can understand), but it really adds a lot. If readers are interested in that, they can find it in quotes in other works. This book is a must have!

The Queen's confession: a fictional autobiography

LET THEM EAT CAKE...
Victoria Holt was one of my favorite authors when I was younger. A master storyteller, she would consistently weave a story that would have the reader turning the pages. This work of historical fiction is one of her best. Riveting from beginning to end, this fictional autobiographical account of the life of Marie Antoinette is superb. Written in the first person, with little dialogue, it is the rumination of a life that was to end tragically. Pampered, spoiled, and fun loving, the beautiful Maria Antonia of Austria metamorphosed into Marie Antoinette of France upon her marriage to the Dauphin, who would eventually become King of France, the ineffectual, but benign, Louis XVI.

This is her story, grounded in historical fact and set within the framework of history. This work of fiction about the life of Marie Antoinette, as seen through her own eyes, is fascinating, as it captures the flavor of those uncertain times and the events that led to the French Revolution and the end of the monarchy in France. It is a reflection on how Marie Antoinette's own behavior influenced the fate of France. Indulging in the excesses of the day, she initially gave little thought as to how her actions might affect the people of France or the monarchy. By the time she realized that her actions and excesses had wide spread political ramifications, it was too late, and the fate of her and her husband was sealed. No amount of personal regret could change it.

This book will be enjoyed by those who enjoy good, well written historical fiction. It is little wonder that this book spent two months on the New York Times Best Seller List. It is simply historical fiction at its best.

Excellent fiction based on fact
Keeping in mind that this is a work of fiction, it is still an excellent story about Marie Antoinette and the events that led up to the French Revolution. While the ill-fated queen is the protagonist of the tale, the author does not attempt to excuse but merely to explain the foolish and often callous behavior that placed her in history as one of the most hated women of all time. During earlier chapters we get a tantalizing glimpse into the decadent courts of Louis XIV and XV. Then we watch as Louis XVI ascends the throne, far too young and with no idea how to be a king, but determined to please everyone, including his pretty young wife. The ultimate collapse of the monarchy is mourned by the queen even as she admits her own part in it and recalls steps taken or not taken that might have averted it.

The author does not pretend that everything in the story is true; conversations that might have taken place, suspected rendezvous, and dramatic license regarding people about whom little is really known have been added for flavor. But the historical framework of the story is unfailingly accurate, with an excellent bibliography. I would not recommend this to be the first or only book you read about Marie Antoinette, but after studying some completely factual works, sit back and enjoy being drawn into the story with some vivid speculation as to how some things might have happened.

It felt like "coming home".
I have been an avid reader of Victoria magazine for several years and thoroughly enjoyed the essays. Sometimes I clip articles or pictures from other magazines that touch my soul, but I cannot bring myself to separate even one article from Victoria. Now, here in this book, it's been done for me. So many of the stories/essays speak my life. My favorite is "Reflecting on Foot." I eagerly await another collection. Now if there was a book collecting my "Favorite Things" I would be in heaven.

Thoughtful essays on a woman's life.
This is a book I read for relaxation and to reflect on my life. I love it. I'm buying a copy for my married step-daughter for Christmas.

Restoring Broken Vessels: Confronting the Attack on Female Sexuality

A must read for all females, young and old a like!
Restoring Broken Vessels is an excellent written and well timed book. I was hooked from the beginning. Although I have never been sexually abused, the content held a lot of information that was helpful in realizing what occurs to the female psyche as one develops. I am a christian woman and the author's articulation and unfolding of spiritual attacks, spoke directly to my spirit and beliefs. I found the book so enlightening, that I began reading it to my 10 year old granddaughter, who in turn began reading it herself and in 2 days, had read 3/4/'s of the book. If one is a believer in the providential plan of God in their life, (of course the Bible is the first source), this is a must read book. I am looking forward to sharing this book as a teaching/learning aid to assist women I encounter who are hurting, confused, and at the point of giving up on relationships. Thanks Ms. Johnson for sharing your work with us, your readers.

Excellent, a must read for women who have been abused.
This is a excellent book for women's Bible and study groups. It gives much background research on the origin and root of sexaul abuse and the attack on the female sexuality. An in-depth overview of women and sexuality through every transition of life. From young girls to old age. It gives personal testimonies of both men and women's sexual mistreat, but mostly geared to the women. A must read for women with tainted past, it gives much hope and pardon. Very Biblically based. We will use this book in our Women's Ministry Group.

Woof!
Filled with large color plates, most with a detail added to show stitching on a particularly lovely band. These are remarkable samplers, mostly English, all very old and THE GOOD STUFF. The examples of whitework, especially, just don't seem like anything human hands could do. What a great book to dream through!

Absolutely stunning!
If you have an interest in samplers this book is a MUST! The photography is incredible. There are over 100 color plates of a wide range of samplers from the museum. Every plate has a picture of the sampler in its entirety and many have a close-up of a section of the work which allows you to see the individual stitches in great detail.

There are samplers from a wide range of techniques and subject matter. Techniques include cross stitch, blackwork, drawn thread, cutwork, crewel, specialty stitches, and Berlin work. There are band samplers, spot samplers, and darning samplers. There are samplers depicting maps, almanacks, and the solar system. There are samplers from England, Germany, Turkey, Morocco, America, Scandinavia, and West Africa.

This is a book you will come back to again and again.
