A must read
This book was tremendously helpful in revealing what's at the heart of sin...pride and unrepentance. These are not much talked about topics in our culture today. I was greatly stirred, challenged, and blessed by the author's simply written yet powerful words. A small volume, it can be read in a couple hours, but to benefit most from it you'll probably want to read it a little at a time. Chapter titles include "Repentance, the Foundation of Life", "Repentance and its Counterfeit", "What is True Repentance?", "Repentance and the Spirit-filled Life", "Repentance and the Carnal Christian", "Repentance-God's mercy". It deals with these topics in a clear, direct manner. This is a rare book that will revolutionize your Christian life. Read with an open heart and with prayer.

Unique African-American Prayer Journal
Lloyd Preston Terrell and Karen Williams have drawn on the prayers and the prayer concerns of the African-American community to create a book that guides our prayers, offers us Scripture, quotations from African-Americans, photographs, and space to write our own prayers, prayer concerns, and answers to our prayers.

The book is based on monthly themes: January-Prayers for the Soul, February-Prayers for the Church, March-Prayers for the Nation, September-Prayers for the Educational System. (The prayer concern for March 3--as I compose this--is for Law- and policy-makers, a concern for all of us.)

The late Dr. Samuel D. Proctor wrote an introduction to this book, and it is good to have his wisdom.

The book opens flat for easy writing. Good to put on a table and not worry that your page is lost.

This is an excellent book! I hope that many people will use its suggestions and be guided to a deeper prayer life.

The best book on preaching I've read
This book is absolutely the best book on preaching I've read. It came at just the right time in my life, and tackled in my life that needed attention.

Calvin argues that good sermons don't come from just good preparation or homiletical practice. They come from a life well lived. "Great preaching only grows out of the soil of great lives." He tackles the issues of passion, the draining nature of pastoral work, and the preacher's pride. I plan on re-reading this book often.

If you've ever felt that something is missing in your preaching, but you couldn't quite put your finger on it, this book is for you.

Why are gems like this so rare?
Why are gems like this so rare?

Calvin Miller's poetry is beautiful, often subtle, solidly powerful. He blends a free verse style with a fantasy-esque feel to weave a new form of allegory/theo-writing. Not nearly as clunky as Pilgrim's Progress type stuff, not as intense or involved as Paradise Lost, smoother and more mythic than Chronicles of Narnia, yet borrowing elements of all three.

Symphony in Sand is a loosely woven tale of Mary (re-named Trouvere), Joseph (Artisan), Nicodemus (Imperius), and a king (Melek) waiting to see the Child. It is dreamlike and beautiful, powerful and touching. Miller weaves in deep truth with human emotion, the grandeur of God with the frailty of man.

Words escape me as I attempt to review this. All I can think to write is "beautiful". How I wish there were more books like this! Miller's pen is inspired, effortless. He writes in a way that gives dignity to the written word... and points to the Word himself.

A sample: Trouvere's song

"Send soon the gentle rain and kiss

The parched philosophies of earth.

And wash my shabby rags of trust

And clothe me with a new cleansed worth.

"Immaculate in nature come

Swab dying from my dead hereafter.

Cut healing into stabbing woe

And bind my pain with laughter.

"Send soon the gentle rain. Rich dress

The desert night with wedding flowers

And run anemones into

A bridal quilt with tender showers.

"You, Father, I adore--for You

Alone can make my madness sane.

Embrace my need or I must die.

Great Sovereign, send Your gentle rain."

New Freedoms
This is my first Calvin Miller book, but it certainly won't be my last. The Unchained Soul is a journey into wholeness. Calvin Miller gives to us a picture of what a relationship with Jesus Christ can look like through the filter of the Great Christian Classics. Where Richard Foster teaches us the nuts and bolts of spiritual disciplines in The Celebration of Discipline, Calvin Miller takes us to an intermediate level of spiritual discipline. Calvin Miller explains to us in his book that we will "not be sent away empty from Christ except those of us who come to him full of themselves." Spiritual Disciplines teach us how to enjoy our walk with God. And Calvin Miller's writing eases us into a new realm with Christ and refreshes our journey towards Christlikeness. There is poetry in Calvin Miller's words as he carries us to new vistas with God. Being alive in Christ is hard work, but it is the best of living. The Unchained Soul's author teaches us this as he shares from personal experience. "There is freedom in discipline," writes Miller. Indeed there is!

The Valley of Dying Stars: A Mark Christian Detective Novel

Fiction never felt so real
The hero in this story is finely drawn, a carefully crafted jewel of contradictions. He has the toughness, courage and principles of Robert B. Parker's Spencer, but is ultimately more complex and conflicted. The story is moving and unforgettable with something for everyone: romance, searing, heart-stopping action, and an engaging mystery that has a shocking, surprise ending. But, what is also fantastic, is its basis in reality. Anyone who has worked in the inner city knows that the horrible places he writes about actually exist.

Very highly recommended, critically important reading
What's In The Bible For...Couples is a reader friendly "marriage manual" revealing what the Bible says about loving for a lifetime in a committed, dedicated relationship culminating in marriage and family. Kathy and Larry Miller effectively collaborate to provide tips for tying the knot, setting priorities, controlling our words, loving our in-laws, raising children, managing money, and enjoying the security of a life-long companionship. The engaging and accessible text is enhanced with illustrations, sidebars, cartoons, and icons making reading Scripture both fun and educational. What's In The Bible For...Couples is very highly recommended, critically important reading for anyone seeking to establish or maintain a loving and successful marriage within the context of today's social and cultural pressures that can prove so corrosive and distracting to a marital relationship and family unit.
