An Invitaion to Presence is just that an opportunity to experience the process of the presence of God. It is a great introduction to the practice of meditation and contemplation. It has a leader guide that enables it to be used in a group setting but of course is good to study individually. The cross references and resources shared give opporunity to move additionally in the process as one grows and wants to open more and more to knowing the heart of God.

"Jesus loves me" is more than a simple child's hymn. It is the cry of all Christians. Calvin Miller masterfully takes the simple words of this familiar hymn and inspires us all to bask in the glow of God's love. Using the song as his outline, Miller explores the deep truths expressed by simple faith. Opening the door on his own life and weaving it with the experience of Christians from all centuries, Miller's gratefullness for what Christ has done sings forth on every page. Encouraging and enlightening "Jesus Loves Me" is a welcomed reminder in a busy world.

JoJo is a heart felt story that really moves you ... I cried through much of the story. It's a gem and worth the read, and a great price at $14 (it's $20 in the bookstores)!

I recommend this book to all bible-Christians who have questions about the Church. The author uses modern, clear and concise language in explaining the finer points of Christian doctrine on topics covering from Sacred Scripture to authentic Christian sexuality. The focus throughout this work is God's interest in man realized fully in the Incarnation.

This book sees the happenings on the ship through the eyes of Fletcher Christian. It even suggests a homosexual relationship was indeed occuring between he and Captain Bligh. I loved seeing the mutiny through his eyes instead of through Bligh's or a fictional midshipman, and it was so good I read it all in an entire night. This is a must-read for every single Bountyphile out there! I believed wholeheartedly that the book hits Fletcher Christian's true character dead on, and several times I could hardly believe he hadn't written it. A very, very, intriguing book, and it's worth trying to find. You'll never see the mutiny more justified than how it is portrayed by Mr. Miller.

I am a true Calvin Miller fan. I had the opportunity in London at the International Congress on Preaching to have dinner with him and at the time this review was written, he lives within 10 miles of my house.

He is in my opinion, the mystic for our time. Someone who can look beyond and go into the depths of God and then be able to communicate it to those seeking the same wonder and awe. This book is no different.

Dr. Miller looks at our life, at the heart cry of our life where we need a challenge and a touch and shows how the cross meets those challenges and needs.

For instance, in one section he talks about the Apostolic Recipe for Life. He says:

For us a thin and needy light focuses on his cross. Like someone being wakened from a deep sleep, we ask, "What does this mean?" Oddly enough, the first to ask this question were fishermen, revenue collectors, peasants, and prosti­tutes, who had through his dying become respectable. These were the ones who wrote the Gospels-those all-inclusive biographies of Christ.

It is right that we have trusted their report. In the first century the apostles were the needy who desired to know him. Now we are the needy whose greatest need is to know him. They were the old generation of beggars who packaged the bread of salvation for our generation. We now eat from their recipe of life.

I have asked the Father that I might never forget that these who first wrote of the Cross were my brothers. They called him Lord in centuries gone by that I might call him Lord in mine. They stood at the Cross, drinking of its life. Now they crook their fingers to beckon me to a glorious altar-and there I am reborn. Now I can trade all my little reasons to live for one big one.

Those souls of old had little status. Yet they began to insist very noisily that the eighteenth year of Emperor Tiberius was history's most important-for it was the Year of the Cross. It was God's year for answering our one simple ques­tion: "Why am I on this planet?" These followers of the Christ couldn't change their minds about the truth of the Cross, and they wouldn't change the subject. They got loud and stayed loud! They shouted it from dungeon windows and prison stocks. They were buried beneath piles of stones thrown in anger. Their heads rolled. Some were crucified in their defense of the crucifixion. And to what have these martyrs (or "wit­nesses," for that is what the word martyr means) called us? Have they called us to some Sunday, cafeteria-style church where we select the worship we want to hear, then castigate others with different tastes? Have we been summoned to com­mittee quarrels where our prosaic egos lobby for control within Christ's body of believers? God forbid!

These who could not change their minds about the Cross have called us to their own private Calvary and, more important, to ours. Gradually they triumphed! Ever so slowly, as they convinced the world that the central event in time and eternity was the Cross, they bade us look with contempt on our own naive discipleship.

The Professor has done it again. Byzantine history lifts from the pages. Like "The Birth of the Hospital in the Byzantine Empire," this volume adds another facet to the reader's understanding.

In C. John Miller's book, Outgrowing the Ingrown Church,I found an answer to why the Church seems lacking in vitality and growth. Miller explains this as a failure of an ingrown Church to accept the challenge of living out its missionary purpose. I was amazed to find myself taking on the ingrownness of my own Church, renewing our vision, and leading us through the trials that followed with greater spiritual energy and deeper contentment that I'd ever known. Though I first read this book eight years ago, I continue to go back to soak up Miller's message. I encourage anyone who cares about the Church to read this book. You will find yourself saying "yes, yes!" as Miller renews your passion for the Church's great mission.
