True prosperity; The Expression Of The Within.
Covers the source of supply from the spiritual perspective. As such it covers the elimination of wrong ideas and attitudes and suggests ways to allow prosperity to appear in one's life. It is non materialistic in approach recognising that prosperity comes as a reaction to what is in an individual as first cause and is not determined by the world. It cautions against the use of mental tricks to attain an objective.

Emphasis is given on what attitudes, beliefs and techniques will bring about prosperity. Sound advice is given on the nature of life from the christian perspective, the importance of placing oneself in the flow of life where giving is more important than getting and the importance of the grateful heart in the recognition of the source of supply.

A good book that could be better. Some points are underdeveloped and that is a lapse in a book that is so opposite to the materialistic world view that supply is in the economy whereas the author's message is that it is within you.

An easy book to read containing thoughts to make you think. No difficult economics. Makes a lot of sense.

I just replaced my loaned out copy....
I loaned out my old copy and never got it back, so just bought a new copy....does that tell you how much I like this book?

I've read my share of prosperity books, and this one is at the top of my list with Howard Caesar's audio book, "All About Prosperity".

If you're looking for some get rich quick type book, well this isn't it. I imagine that's one reason why he gave it the name he did, instead of emphasizing prosperity in the title. It's about changing your thinking about finances, health, relationships, all facets of prosperity. If you believe that changing your thinking will change your life, that we can control our thoughts and by doing so improve our over all circumstances, you'll find this book extremely helpful. Eric Butterworth comes from a very spiritual, and yet very practical level. He challenges many ideas that you might have studied in other prosperity books. Without naming her, he does challenge some of the prosperity techniques taught by Catherine Ponders and others. This is not to say that you should read him instead of her. To completely understand prosperity thinking, you should read both perspectives and then be guided by those principles that seem right to you. If you are open to a new perspective, and not bound by a fixed and rigid mind, you will find a lot of helpful material here.

"Spiritual Economics" is an excellent summary of Natural Law
"Spiritual Economics" is based on the spiritual laws and dynamics of abundance. One of the key elements of this books that raise it above a lot of spiritual law type writings is how practical this book is. Eric Butterworth tackles some very complex dynamics in a very pragmatic, understandable way.

Eric's writings are based largely on the philosophy of the Unity Church (a Christian Church of a different ilk). If you have a strong mainstream Christian faith, you may find some of your current beliefs being challenged. I challenge you to meditate on those challenges and work your way through them, expanding and better understanding your faith positions. I'm currently on my second read of this book (the first read of the 230 pages only took a week!) and am amazed at how much more I'm getting out of it a second time.

One of the Quick Tips I mentioned in this issue of ACHIEVE is to ask yourself "How can I apply this to my life?". It was in reading this book that I discovered this question. To get maximum benefit out of this book, keep asking yourself this question. Integrate this material into your life and you will be amazed at how much more you can manifest.

Some of the main ideas I got out of the book are: * I am responsible for all manifestations in my life, i.e. everything. * As I evolve, so does my manifestation potential evolve. * I need to do what I can with what I have where I am to manifest my desires. * I need to build the demand before the supply will manifest. I need to have the containers in which to put the supply once it comes. I need to become the kind of person who experiences that which I want before I can truly achieve it. * If things are tight, something has to give. I need to give selflessly of myself to the Universe. I strongly urge you to go out TODAY and order this book.

The Book of Seven Truths: A Tale of Hope and Restoration

Harper San Francisco could have done a much better job.
This is a nice enough tale, though it doesn't soar to the previous heights of Calvin Miller's Singer Trilogy or Symphony Trilogy. It reads as a book within a book, with the odd effect of trying to provide pithy statements (a la 7 Habits) in the midst of a supposedly inspirational story.

My main problems with this book are with Harper San Francisco's dreadfully poor job in editing and proofreading the book. I found at least a dozen typos and blatant errors in the book, including places where it speaks in third person in the middle of a first person narrative, occasions where the dialogue between characters is incorrectly attributed, and the anachronistic use of a modern Bible translation in a quote supposedly from 1903.

Even more embarrassing, two of the three endorsements on the back cover have misspelled authors' names. Walter Wangerin is spelled "Wagnerin," and Luci Shaw is referred to as Luci "Shawa." All this indicates Harper's lack of professionalism and care in producing their books.

Readers may find the fairy-tale ending a little too contrived. Ultimately, this book is a nice diversion for an evening of reading, but not a lasting contribution to contemporary Christian literature.

Wow! I bawled and grew along with the characters!
This book, despite some admitted publishing errors, evoked deep emotion within me. I cried from deep within my being. I was so moved by the turn of events, especially those within the little red book. I found the 7 truths insightful and profound, and the story beautifully illustrated each one. I have been buying this book for everyone I love ever since I read it, twice.

Very inspiring and spiritually uplifting book
Mr. Miller, as a true storyteller, weaves the Seven Truths of the Christian faith into a remarkable story of lessons to be learned. Beginning with a story about the plight of the hopeless, he brings into play seven truths that bring hope and restoration. It's hard to put down. It's very easy reading and it's only at the end of each chapter that you realize you've learned a lesson as well as read an entertaining story.

easy reading
This book was an ok book, it took three evenings to finish. I thought the book was more about joy rather then JOY. By that I mean it was more about earthly things & relationships, ect. in life producing joy ~ I had hoped it would have been more about the JOY of the Lord. It is a good book for a brand new Christian or someone searching.

Bring Back the Joy - Spiritual Poetry in Motion!
Sheila Walsh has done it again! I thought "Life is Tough but God is Faithful" was too wonderful to top, but "Bring Back the Joy" has possibly surpassed it and has truly shown me how to do JUST THAT! Her honest and real style allows the reader to relate to her in a way that she becomes like a dear friend. With this level of comfortability established, the reader is able to see clearly and learn how to dispel religeous myths, take inventory of personal and spiritual baggage, and apply God's truth, healing and love to their lives. By breaking the mold of the model Christian, Shiela has reinforced to me that: 1. God loves me for who I am, not what I do for Him. 2. It is okay to be "me". 3. Only through God's loving encouragement and my own acceptance of myself, can I be changed and strengthened to be the Christian woman that God desires me to be.

This book has miraculously enhanced my life A must read for all who have lost their zest for their faith and desire to "rekindle the joy in their relationship with God."

does not live up to series expectations
I acquired this book after enjoying other books in The West and the Wider World Series (Harris' The Sins of the Father, Seaman's Paper Airplanes in the Himalayas). Unlike the other books, The Cloud and the Light provides little insight into the relationships and the interactions between cultures. In part, this is due to the others being written by children of missionaries, authors exposed to both worlds as a child. A large part, however, seems to be Dr. Kawano's desire to be positive and not critical. He speaks against the horrors of radiation poisoning, suicide and smoking, but seems hesitant to criticize any person or cultural group. The absence of comments regarding America's use of the bomb are notable.

The first chapters of this autobiography provide revealing descriptions of what it was like to live and to provide medical care in Nagasaki during and after the bomb. The middle chapters, however, focus on other aspects of his life - his work in neurology and his support of suicide hotline and anti-smoking campaigns. The final chapters provide more wartime background and address how Dr. Kawano became a Christian.

Readers interested in "inspirational" lives may enjoy this book. Those interested in Japan and Japanese medicine during and immediately after the bomb should read the first chapters. Most will probably find the translated prose readable but dry.

Quote from the daughter of Albert Schweitzer....
THE CLOUD AND THE LIGHT Memoirs of a Japanese Christian Surgeon from Nagasaki

The West and the Wider World Series, Vol. XII By Martin Kawano, M.D.

In an extended memoir, Dr. Martin Kawano reviews his life from the rare perspective of a Protestant inter-denominational surgeon who, while a medical student, survived the bombing of Nagasaki. This intensely personal account casts more light on the bombing and its immediate aftermath than other existing classic works.

Dr. Kawano had studied Protestant theology, but set these pursuits aside to join the army. Following his stint in service, he began medical studies. He has been a surgeon all his professional life and a crusader against smoking. In his world-wide service as a social reformer he worked with many well-known people such as Maria Von Trapp and the daughter and granddaughter of Albert Schweitzer.

"Like my father Albert Schweitzer, who influenced him, Martin Kawano has made his life his argument. From the time when as a medical student he miraculously escaped death from the atomic bomb which fell on Nagasaki, his life has unfolded in steady service to mankind. From his studies in the USA, Germany, Switzerland and Canada, he has brought back to Japan unique capabilities for helping where he sees the greatest needs, without consideration for his career or his personal life. His story is inspiring, the testimony of a man with unwavering faith and dedication." Rhena Schweitzer Miller, 1996

What a great book for the summer holiday season!
What a great book to introduce children to patriotism and the All American parade! The illustrations bring a parade to life! All three of my kids ages 6, 4 and 20 months loved this book! Like a real parade, something for everyone!

Hats Off for the Fourth of July!
This book captures the essence of a favorite American event - the annual Fourth of July parade that can be witnessed in almost every small town. Ziefert's rhyming story is wonderfully illustrated with vivid paintings of the different entries in the parade. Uncle Sam on stilts, the Little League, the High School Band, the local beauty pageant winner---it's just like the author says "Everyone marches on the Fourth of July". My favorite picture is the one of the baton twirler trying to retrieve her baton from the mischievous pup that caught it. This book is an excellent one to read aloud to toddlers and preschoolers.

Anyone can sing with children!
This is a wonderful resource for anyone who works with children (especially preschoolers!) in Sunday School, Bible School, or Day Care. The book is full of songs that teach children about the Bible. The songs use familiar tunes like "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "The Wheels on the Bus". So, you don't have to read music to enjoy the songs! Have fun and sing with children!

A Four Star Book!
I would recommend this book to any elementary history teacher for the classroom or any parent who has a child who says history is boring. This book brings you into the lives and feelings of the Lankford family during the turbulent times in Boston during the Stamp Act Riots. It focuses on Kathleen and her brother Will, who is an ardent Patriot. Kathleen, however is torn between following the Patriot cause and doing what is right, such as helping a wounded British soldier. The story shows how the violence of the time inflenced the actions of many innocent people and also shows that the issues of independance and liberty are not always black and white but have many shades of gray. A very good book, a must read for any child or adult interested in colonial times.

I found this book to be both delightful and insightful.
A Childhood in Scotland is a delightful and insightful book. Despite its size(90 pgs.), it is remarkably full of intriguing details of the author's castle itself and her adventures growing up within its walls. It seemed amazing to me that Christian had such a vivid recollection of her few short years there. Her writing clearly showed how much she loved the out of doors as opposed to the bleak, cold, impersonal life within the castle itself. With that in mind, it doesn't surprise me at all that at the age of 58 she took a bicycle ride from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast. She had learned at a very early age that the outside world held many wonderful adventures for her. I do wish, however, that there could have been more information about her siblings and what became of them in their latter years. She did such an excellent job of recording and reporting about her childhood that I have been left with a strong desire to read more books about castles and the life of the people who lived in them. I plan to share this book with several of my friends and will undoubtedly give it as a gift to some of them. It was one of those books that makes the reader wish the final page would never come. My four star rating is only because of that fact - I wish it could have been longer.

Good writing, great book with important insights
Rhea Miller's been on a long and winding journey to this book, and beyond. Her writing is good, and I particularly enjoyed how she has shown the important--vital--connections between chaos theory and the creation/nurturing of community. This is more than theory; she's done it, and been in the thick of it. And still is, as a county commissioner in western Washington state. Kudos to Rhea for a groundbreaking book!

Well Written W/ Good Intentions...
Like most Christian men who purchased this book, I had to be as careful buying and reading this book as I did acquiring pornography. To be a Christian man, and admit to an addiction such as alcohol or drugs, will yield a warm embrace from the Church. They want to help. To admit an addiction in porn however, is to become a modern day leper. I think Henry Rogers is sensitive to the emotional rollercoaster that many men cannot escape, and he approaches the matter Biblically, which is to say, the wisely.

On a critical note, I found that the book sometimes advocated or gave rise to the very feelings I'm trying to conquer. In a chapter on Internet Pornography, he actually listed the top ten keywords used for search engines to find porn. Why give this out? Might as well tell an alcoholic where the nearest bar is at. Likewise, many of the personal accounts of these women, which were offered with the intention of having men experience a change of heart, were written much in the same manner that many erotica based stories are written. If a man struggles with this, and is turned on by the horrific experiences that these women sadly endured, then he will not see the light, but find this material to feed his sexual perversion. His account of strip clubs, which I have never attended, made me want to go. That's not a good thing for someone like me.

Overall, the book was very well written, thoughtfully and respectfully researched (especially with regard to the women), and kept the Bible at its center focus. Will this book utlimately help me overcome my addiction? I will honestly say that it gave me a lot to think about, and has got me back into the Bible. However, like many men, I need divine help to overcome that which has controlled and dominated me for so very long. I believe that God is stronger than Satan, and am prayerful that He will intervene sooner than later. My prayers are with You all as well...

Good addition to one's library on this topic.
Lately I've noticed an increase in the publication of Christian-based books about sexual addiction. They have been written because there seems to be a growing number of men in the church who are trapped and defeated by sexual issues. This problem is one that needs to be addressed at a basic level, and this book does that in an admirably honest and straightforward fashion. It is well-written, and should be read by anyone involved in this issue. But there is a crucial aspect which should be taken into account when reading this book (and others like it) that I'll expand upon below.

Each individual book within this genre tends to have a similar overall message and methodology - "sin bad, purity good, here's how to stay holy, etc." There's usually a unique slant to them as well, depending on whatever point the author feels the need to make. In the case of "The Silent War," the focus is on the negative consequences of sex addiction and involvement with pornography. Much of the book documents the casualties on all fronts of the "Silent War" - the men who risk everything to fulfill their sex addiction, the family members they devastate, and the women who put their physical, emotional, and spiritual health on the line by their personal involvement in the porn industry. This is particularly effective because it shows the human cost of sexual addiction, and destroys the myth that pornography is a "victimless" crime. It's only in the last couple of chapters that a solution for those in bondage to this sin is offered, and it is along the usual Christian lines of accountability, prayer, fleeing temptation, Scripture meditation/memorization, and so forth.

I liked the book - it's an easy read, the main author is very transparent about his own struggles with pornography, and the message is an important one. However, any Christian who is dealing with sexual addiction and pornography should not rely on this book alone (although it can be said that any single book on this topic is somehow inadequate). While sound, the solutions listed above will only "work" for the reader if they have a growing love relationship with Christ, and a PRIMARY desire to know Him and obey Him. If one simply concentrates on eliminating the sin (the negative) without discovering an acceptable alternative (the positive), then I think eventually they will fall again. Personal holiness is a byproduct of our relationship with God - it's not an end in itself. If that is kept in mind, then "The Silent War" is worth reading as an aid to strengthening one's existing walk with God.

Excellent Resource for the Subject of Pornography
This is one of the best books I have read for quite some time. Pornography is a very sensitive and REAL issue. People normally make fun of it and think it's no big deal as everyone is bound to encounter it at one time or another, that it's alright to play with it. Henry Rogers illustrates the devastating effects it has on people's lives. Their financial, spiritual, even physical lives will rot once trapped in porn's deception.

I am very difficult person to please for I have a very short attention span but this book was like a magnet. I just couldn't put it down. Each chapter is very detailed and the author is not opinionated. Henry Rogers discusses different dimensions of pornography, from phone-sex to the Internet, girlie bars to adult magazines. In fact, a big chunk of the book is composed of stories from actual people who were/is involved in this deceitful industry. Buy this book! Specially if you have a brother or a male friend. Even women will surely realize a lot of things after reading this.

I am currently reading "Affair of the Mind" by Laurie Hall and I'm having a difficult time trying to maintain my interest. That book pales in comparison to this one. This book will surely help anyone who wants to escape or even better, to avoid, the deadly clutches of pornography.
